Chapter V
When Whicher was 16, he married the Queen of Asturias, Muña. Muña was heirless, so when she died, the throne would be inherited by the Dukes of Brabant. After 2 year, on 22 June 896, a daughter was born, Blanca. If her mother died now, the throne would be hers, and in hands of the van Brabant dynasty. In February 899 another daughter was born, Yonefij, named after her grandmother. Because of the marriage, Asturias was fighting civil war after civil war, but Muña always won. March 22, 912, a son was born, Robrecht. Whicher was very happy with him. However, the population feared that he would become like his father, a cruel man. Whicher was known as the the cruel among the population, because he tried to kill his wife to gain the throne. That wasn’t necessary, since Muña ‘the great’, died of illness in December 912. Robrecht succeeded to throne, when he was only a few months old. Whicher remarried with the Princess of West Francia, Valence. On the first of October 894 Pieter-Jan was born. In June 932 Whicher was surprised, his own son wanted to kill him! He wasn’t able to stop the plot, and he knew he would die soon. Three years later a snake was released in the bed of the Duke, he was killed… The peasants and nobles where happy, finally the duke was death. However, the troubles weren’t over for Brabant. King Robrecht I of Asturias was a good man, but he became a true Castilian after living there so long, also internal conflicts and wars against the Muslims where going on in Asturias, and the levies from Brabant where called to war. In Asturias a civil war was going on against Portucale, a duchy in Galicia. Muslims also invaded that duchy, and clashes between the armies happened.
Situation at the dead of Whicher ‘the Cruel’.
Robrecht wanted to restore order, and he did everything for that. For plots no negiotations like normal, they were imprisoned and executed the next day, he would have killed 400 men during one year using that method, including four nobles. Enemy generals taken Prison would be executed as well, so was every Muslim soldier.
Situation 28 January 938
In march the armies of Asturias and Brabant where crushed in a battle against the Muslims, it was very likely that the Muslims would win the war and take Portucale, which would be a disaster for Christianity. Devastating cavalry charges from the Moors destroyed the Asturian flanks, the soldiers from Brabant where encircled in the middle, and killed. Nobody knew how long Asturias would stand against this barbarians, and one thing was sure, strong allies where needed, like Burgundy, controlling all of West Francia.
