Nice AAR - You better name someone "Maximiliaan" :p
Nope, van Brabant is just a name given to the Dukes of that region, so I made them a dynasty, I don't imitate you....

Chapter V

When Whicher was 16, he married the Queen of Asturias, Muña. Muña was heirless, so when she died, the throne would be inherited by the Dukes of Brabant. After 2 year, on 22 June 896, a daughter was born, Blanca. If her mother died now, the throne would be hers, and in hands of the van Brabant dynasty. In February 899 another daughter was born, Yonefij, named after her grandmother. Because of the marriage, Asturias was fighting civil war after civil war, but Muña always won. March 22, 912, a son was born, Robrecht. Whicher was very happy with him. However, the population feared that he would become like his father, a cruel man. Whicher was known as the the cruel among the population, because he tried to kill his wife to gain the throne. That wasn’t necessary, since Muña ‘the great’, died of illness in December 912. Robrecht succeeded to throne, when he was only a few months old. Whicher remarried with the Princess of West Francia, Valence. On the first of October 894 Pieter-Jan was born. In June 932 Whicher was surprised, his own son wanted to kill him! He wasn’t able to stop the plot, and he knew he would die soon. Three years later a snake was released in the bed of the Duke, he was killed… The peasants and nobles where happy, finally the duke was death. However, the troubles weren’t over for Brabant. King Robrecht I of Asturias was a good man, but he became a true Castilian after living there so long, also internal conflicts and wars against the Muslims where going on in Asturias, and the levies from Brabant where called to war. In Asturias a civil war was going on against Portucale, a duchy in Galicia. Muslims also invaded that duchy, and clashes between the armies happened.

okbh.png

Situation at the dead of Whicher ‘the Cruel’.
Robrecht wanted to restore order, and he did everything for that. For plots no negiotations like normal, they were imprisoned and executed the next day, he would have killed 400 men during one year using that method, including four nobles. Enemy generals taken Prison would be executed as well, so was every Muslim soldier.

dmlm.png

Situation 28 January 938

In march the armies of Asturias and Brabant where crushed in a battle against the Muslims, it was very likely that the Muslims would win the war and take Portucale, which would be a disaster for Christianity. Devastating cavalry charges from the Moors destroyed the Asturian flanks, the soldiers from Brabant where encircled in the middle, and killed. Nobody knew how long Asturias would stand against this barbarians, and one thing was sure, strong allies where needed, like Burgundy, controlling all of West Francia.

Chapter VI

The Moors expanded further by annexing the rebels in Asturias. The armies of Robrecht weren’t able to do anything. All of Portucale was stolen under the nose of the van Brabant Family. Asturias was ruined, to make it even worse King Toke I ‘the Conqueror’ of Boulogne invaded Brabant. Duke Alfonso the merry of Portucale continued the fight in Galicia, but was taken Prisoner by Robrecht I, ended a long and bloody civil war for Galicia. On 12 August 942 Robrecht was born, the first son of Robrecht I. Robrecht was fighting in Brabant at that very moment. One year later, on November 22 943, his wife died of Illness, he remarried with Guilhelimna, Princess of Florence. Robrecht became mad at that moment. In December he surrendered and granted Galicia Independence, He wasn’t able to defeat the armies of another rebellion. In March 945 he banished his wife because a plot. Grand Mayor Filipe I of the republic of Brabant demanded independence two months later, resulting in another civil war. Grand Mayor Filipe would be executed, and peace would be signed with Boulogne.

On July the 4th 948 the Muslims of Salamanca declared war! Alone Asturias was doomed. But then a miracle happened: In the Prince-bishopric of Galicia the brother of Robrecht was elected as new Bishop. He Offered to join the war, and Robrecht gladly accepted. In January 949 Salamanca surrendered, and Robrecht demanded money. The Norse Vikings used this period of Chaos to plunder the lands of Asturias. Hainaut was lost during the short independence of Filipe I, in a war against Norway. Robrecht started to revoke all titles of his vassals, some used force to hold their, but all failed. All titles where handed to Pieter-Jan, a bishop, his brother. However, one war became a disaster. Lord Herman of Viscaya refused to give his title, and during a battle Robrecht I was captured! He was forces to abdicate on 7 August 952 , and his 10 year old son, Robrecht II succeeded to the throne. He finished the work of his father. The king of Navarra invaded a few weeks later. White peace was signed after a single battle, resulting in a victory for Asturias

I've enjoyed what you have going so far, definitely an interesting game when you have Brabant down in Iberia as well, should be fun to see how you deal with the Muslim threat down there!

Chapter VII

After the Civil war, it was only getting worse. The Muslim hordes invaded once again, and making use of the situation, Ordõno van Brabant declared war for his claim on the throne of Galicia. At Calahorra in August 965 the Asturian armies where knocked out for the rest of the war by the Moors. The Muslims just charged with their cavalry, and fast moving infantry encircled the busy soldiers of Asturias, leaving no change to escape. The king managed to breakthrough with a couple of men, but all of these men were hunted down, and only the king managed to hide himself in the woods.

The battle of Calahorra

It was four years after the battle of Calahorra that the King was forced to surrender. The Kingdom of Asturias was lost for the biggest part. The Muslims where pushing into France, and it looked like Christianity would lose all hope to win and to liberate Iberia. In the meantime Asturias was struggling with Ordõno’s armies. It looked like Ordõno would be crushed, since his armies where defeated time after time. But then, the Moors decided it was time to take swallow more of Iberia. It was June 971 when Asturias was on the brink of destruction. In the beginning some initial success was archived, but nothing more than some skirmishes. The Moors started to take the land, nothing is less true then the books of that time, where the moors would be plundering, barbarian people. In fact they were noble for their enemies! In September 972 Asturias was forced to give up even more, and some days later Ordõno took control of Galicia and Brabant, marking the end of Asturias. The reign of Robrecht II ‘the Holy’ ended. After he was attacked by guards to imprison him, he fled to Florence, where he became a heretic bishop, and where he lived in fear, excommunicated by the church.
The king married Cécile of Champagne, daughter of the Duke of Champagne. Ordõne immediately invaded Norway for their areas hold in Flanders, he would fail, and he would be crushed by the Viking armies, he would need to pay to Norwegian king for peace. In February 981 after several months of Illness, Cécile died of Pneumonia. The king married Bonne, a simple courtier. On 7 September 984 she gave birth to a child, Wenna.

Ouch, Galicia is taking a beating...

If you get driven out of Spain, could you realistically become an independent Brabant? That would be jolly. Oh, and how is Maximiliaan doing?

Chapter VIII

It was on three September 986 that Folki of Gent managed to get Independence from the Norwegian Empire. The Galician King used this and invaded them the same day, declaring an holy war for Flanders. While still fighting Flanders, Breda managed to revolt from Lotharingia, and the king attacked it in January 989. According to a famous tale from that time, Ordõno was a busy man, to busy, and he became crazy because of it. He became stressed, not a good thing for a king. This came because Flanders was taken over by a Waldesian ruler, ending the war, and ending the attempt to take Flanders. Breda was annexed in 990, while only small, it is a rightful claim of the van Brabant family. In June 992 a second holy war for Flanders was declared, this time against the local Waldesian ruler, Bertold the Liberator. The Galician Armies where ambushed, resulting in a loss of many men nearby Gent. They quickly regrouped, and with help of the fresh Spanish troops they defeated the enemy.

On February the first 994, Bertold surrendered. He was still holding the county of Hainaut however, but the Southern Netherlands where still divided between French, Dutch and Englishmen. To celebrate this victory, Ordõno held a grand tournament the same year. He became second, the first king in a long time ending in the top three.

The Archbishop of Portucale, the mightiest man in the Kingdom of Galicia invaded Hainaut, and annexed it.

Its quite weird to see a state based in modern day Belgium called the Kingdom of Galicia :p. I do think you should give up on trying to hold on to whatever you have left in Spain and focus on building a powerful Kingdom in Flanders.

Ouch those Muslims in Iberia in ToG are evil!!! Although Galicia up there in the Low Countries is quite fun to see :) I second Tommy's opinion though power in Flanders should be key to retaking the ancestral Kingdom of Galicia. Get a powerbase built up and wait for the eventual splintering of the Iberian Moors, I'm sure they'll splinter.....sometime.

Great read so far looking forward to seeing how the Brabant's fare with all this bad luck they've had!
