The History of the Sol Republic

Prologue: A People United

The Formation of the Republic: 2179-2200

The Sol Republic stats.jpg

In 2179, the start of the 2nd American Civil War led to the collapse of the UN, as rival factions failed to reach an agreement to end the failed military coup and subsequent rebellion peacefully, and around the world nations backed rival sides in the conflict, joining either the Union of Democratic States (UDS) or the Independent National Coalition (INC), and going to war with each other and supporting ideological uprisings in each other's’ territories.

The war quickly expanded outside of Earth and dragged in the various small mining colonies on Luna, Mars, the Asteroid Belt, and the Jovian Moons. The Great Interplanetary War, as it came to be known, lasted 11 years, and though it was brutal with billions killed, humanity was spared the horror of nuclear war, as neither side was willing to launch a first strike knowing that the other side would retaliate dooming the planets. Though the exact death toll of the conflict may never be known, it is commonly agreed that between 3-4 billion lost their lives in combat, through famine and disease, and by ethnic and political cleansing that occurred. The most commonly accepted death toll based on pre-war census data suggests that around 3.63 billion deaths occurred, mostly on Earth during the 11-year conflict. By 2190, the Unionist (UDS) forces had managed to achieve a total victory, when the last of the Nationalist (INC) nations capitulated after being overwhelmed through combat or pro-Unionist revolutions.

Earth 2200.jpg

The victorious UDS had secured the entire Solar System but at a great price. The victorious nations agreed that individual nation states were a threat to humanity and that the people of the Solar System could never again afford to be divided amongst themselves. The Sol Republic was formed on March 4th, 2190 with each former nation-state and colony granted representation in the Republican Senate based on their population size. The Capitals were to be divided by branch of government and spread out so that no former nation held too much power. The Executive Capital was to be located in Paris, in the former European Federation. The Legislative Capital was to be located in the former UN Headquarters in New York City, the former North American Union. Finally, the Judicial Branch was to be located in New Delhi, the former United South Asian Confederation.

The famed and popular UDS Marshal Guillaume Delacroix from the European Federation, who had risen through the ranks from a Brigadier General in 2179, and had won several stunning victories, breaking the Siege of Vienna in 2184, winning a decisive victory at the Battle of Debrecen in 2187, and capturing Istanbul and Volgograd in 2186 and 2188 respectively, was named as the first Consul of the Republic.

Consul Delacroix immediately set out funding the reconstruction of the Solar System, helping to rebuild both former UDS and INC territories, as well as investing heavily in the Sol Republic’s space program, especially in the experimental Hyperdrive system that could potentially reach other stars and allow humanity to expand out past the crowded and damaged system of its birth.

In his inaugural speech, he laid his vision of a galactic human civilization stating:

People of the Sol Republic, I come before you today with the belief that the dark days of division and bloodshed that we went through together are behind us. We must now unite together as brothers and sisters of humanity, and work together to achieve prosperity and peace for all people. For centuries humanity has looked up to the stars and dreamed about what could lie beyond the sky. With new technology, that dream can finally be achieved, and the wounds of the past left behind. I hope you can join me in working together to achieve our destiny of expanding beyond the star system that we were born in, and help humanity reach its full potential, united as one people.

His belief in the system soon paid off, and by October 2199, the famous Physicist Ira Venktaesan had built a working Hyperdrive. Ira had discovered the subspace network, a system of links that bound stars throughout the Milky Way Galaxy, and her Hyperdrive System could tap into this network and travel at speeds much faster than light without suffering the negative effects that such high-speed travel would place on ships and crew traveling in regular space. By January 4th, 2200, the newly constructed research vessel SRS Explorer, equipped with the new Hyperdrive and commanded by Captain Iris O’Neill, entered subspace and traveled to Alpha Centauri, with the hopes of finding a new world to colonize for the remaining 8.7 billion citizens of the Sol Republic.

Author's Notes:

This is my first AAR, and I have decided since the scope will be several hundred years, to write it in the style of a history book, with historical narrative and occasional primary source quotes. I have taken some creative liberties with the story compared to the game, such as human colonies outside of Earth in the Solar System, and various interactions between Empires, to make the story better. I hope you enjoy! My game settings for this AAR to the best of my knowledge (this was added several months after I started and after several patches changed the game) are:

Galaxy Size: Huge 1000 stars (I like my galaxy to be as big as possible. If my computer and this game could handle it I would use a mod to allow for 10,000 stars so I could have a grander galaxy, but alas, this is as big as it gets while still running decently.)

Shape: 2 arms (I wanted it to look like the Milky Way Galaxy since my story started on Earth.)

AI:30 (I wanted to play with as many different unique empires as possible, just like with the galaxy size, if I could have set the number higher I would have, because I like all the variety.)

Advanced AI: 0 (This is something I could have done differently, but since this was my first AAR, I didn't want some OP Advanced Start AI to crush me before I got powerful.)

Fallen Empires: 3 (I am not sure why I only ever encountered 2 Fallen Empires instead of the 3 I had in the settings because I was hoping a War in the Heavens would occur. Perhaps one got destroyed early on or maybe 2.0 was just bugged at launch in this regard, but oh well.)

Marauder: 1 (This was my first play through on 2.0 and since it was also my first AAR, I didn't want there to be too many Marauders which could destroy me early on and prevent me from writing this, so I went with just one to see what would happen, I have since upped the number to 2 on my settings for future campaigns.)

Tech: .75x (I wanted the tech to advance somewhat rapidly so that I could grow big early on, but not so rapidly that everyone had late game tech immediately.)

Habitable Worlds: 3x (I always set this very high, because as you can tell from galaxy size and AI, I like bigger and more. I think a galaxy spanning empire should have more than a dozen colonized planets, and I wanted every empire to be large; at least in terms of number of planets.)

Primitives: .25x (While I like the idea of primitives, I hate that they use randomly generated names that can sometimes overlap with my prebuilt empires. It makes no sense for species that are from different worlds to have different portraits but have the same name, or vice versa. I wish I could prebuild primitives and fallen empires as well so that everything was unique.)

Crisis Strength: 1.5x (As you might have read in some of my comments earlier, this felt weak to me, and I wish I had it turned up to 2x or 2.5x, which I have set my settings to since. I recommend higher settings on this unless you want a relatively easy containment of them.)

Midgame start: 2350 (I didn't want to get crushed by the Great Khan before I was strong because I had no idea what would happen with that event since I hadn't seen it before.)

Endgame start: 2450 (I wanted there to be at least a century between the two crises.)

Difficulty: Ensign (I am not a pro, and I really didn't want my empire early on in my AAR as I mentioned above. If you are better than me definitely feel free to use a higher difficulty.)

Scaling: Off (I don't know if this feature was even an option when 2.0 was released, but it is currently set to off, so if it existed back then, this was what the setting was.)

AI Aggressiveness: Normal (I feel like I could have turned this up to allow for more conflict. I was pretty strong, especially in the GDL, and we basically had to be the aggressors in almost every war because everyone else was afraid of us.)

Placement: Random (I hate clustered starts where I don't have room to explore and expand.)

Advanced Neighbors: Off (Since I had zero of them anyways, it didn't really matter, but I probably could have had one or two existing with this turned off instead.)

Hyperlane Density: 1x (I wanted there to be some choke points, and apparently now with Distant Worlds, there are a lot more choke points so any new start will have even more than in my game.)

Abandoned Gateways: 1x (I wanted to encounter some, but not too many.)

Wormholes: 1x (Same as gateways.)

Ironman: Off (Obviously given that I used console commands to start two crises at the same time, after I defeated the original, I wasn't in ironman.)

Note about AI Empires: Every empire you see in game, with the exception of primitives, fallen empires, and marauders, was one that I personally created. (I have spent plenty of time making unique factions for every single portrait available with the exception of the very human humanoid ones like the space elves and the space dwarves, in a style that I think fits the look and feel of the portrait. I have them all set to force spawn, ensuring that my game is filled with a random assortment of the ones that I have made, though since I made one for every portrait, I have so many customized species that I get a different combination of them every time I start a new game, and usually will only see one or two of the same ones in back to back game, if any. I also get to know some of the factions pretty well, and can build up respect or rivalries across multiple games with certain factions based on my interactions. For example, in my first play through ever, I was the Republic of Aquilion, and the Qaraki Republic was my first friend, while the Trakpocian Commonwealth was an early enemy that I defeated and absorbed, or in my first play through as the Sol Republic before 2.0 and my AAR, I was almost immediately crushed by the Galactic Khessam Dominion, so they have kind of been a rival for me as a player ever since. I also have made about 6-10 different human factions for a potential Fermi Paradox game, but I have all of my human empires turned to no spawning so they don't end up in my games unless I want them to or decide to play as one of them as I did here.)

Note about Mods: I used no mods for this game, though I am thinking about trying out a slightly larger galaxy (1250-1500 stars) for the next one, and using the realistic galaxy mod as well so that there are stars in the center of the galaxy.

Good luck! A style of history book is definetely appriopriate, although I would suggest experimenting with other styles too. After all - valuable history books do include source material which can be anything. A piece of recording or art ;)

Author's Notes:
... the scope will be several hundred years ...
We'll see how long your nation will survive the hostile Galaxy environment ;)

In 1.9 usually the first century covered most of the game, but 2.0 seems to be a bit slower.

Thanks, I am going to add "primary source documents" from interviews or journals or recordings as well. I am currently in the year 2261, and will be uploading my progress shortly when I finish writing it. I wanted to get the initial expansion out of the way before I wrote this in case I got slaughtered immediately and had to start over haha

The History of the Sol Republic

Chapter 1: Are We Alone Out Here?

Early Expansion in the Local Star Cluster: 2200-2207

On January 6th, 2200, the SRS Explorer broke from subspace into the Alpha Centauri system. They traveled through the sector to the planet Alpha Centauri I and scanned it from low orbit. The crew was amazed at what they found. The planet was absolutely covered in alien life. Captain Iris O’Neill, in her report back to Earth, stated:

“It is the most incredible thing I have ever seen. This wondrous world is full of life, and the atmosphere is almost a perfect match of Earth. This world is fit for human colonization. Alien life exists and we are not alone in this galaxy!”
Alpha Centauri 2203.jpg

Pictured: Alpha Centauri

Research teams were sent down to the surface to collect samples and do field research. They found forests of giant fungoid trees and invasive red vines that covered the plains of several continents. The alien life was incredibly diverse and had a similar food chain to that of Earth. When the subspace message with this information reached Earth, mass celebrations were held, even in former INC territory.

One man, a former soldier from Tehran stated to a journalist covering the celebrations there that
This is the first time since before the war that I feel truly happy and hopeful. There is a whole
Galaxy out there for us to take for ourselves and find a new home, away from the dark memories of the past.

The discovery of a new world capable of supporting large-scale human colonization led to a boom in the field of exploration and space travel. On June 25th, 2200, a second research ship, the SRS Buenaventura, under the command of Captain Jose Manuel Batista, set out from the Luna Shipyard to explore other systems. A New Age of Exploration had begun.

On February 15th, 2201, the SRS Buenaventura discovered the ruins of an ancient civilization on a barren planet in the Hlilje System that was dated at 1.2 million years old. There were writings and fossilized bodies amongst the ruins of a great city, but the crew of the Buenaventura was unable to decipher the language. When the news reached Earth, Consul Delacroix debated with his cabinet about whether the news should be released to the public. He was recorded as saying
We found these ruins very close in the galaxy to our home. The first alien civilization we found was destroyed, this means that it is unlikely that we are alone, and it means that we must be wary of the dangers we may face out there. I fear that if the people find out about this, it may cause a panic.

Lost Civilization.jpg

The discovery of an ancient alien civilization
Ultimately the cabinet agreed that the public had the right to know, and the news of this discovery was released. Fortunately, there was no great panic; the aliens had been gone for a long time, and any number of things could have caused their demise. Most people believed that the past existence of this civilization did not mean that humanity was under threat.

On May 15th, 2201, the language found amongst the ruins was deciphered by Linguistics expert Heinrich Hoffman. Professor Hoffman stated
From what we have translated so far of their language, we have learned that these aliens called themselves the "Irassian Concordat." They were an interstellar power that held sway over this region of the galaxy a little over a million years ago.

They appear to have been six-limbed mammalians, and there are several references to some sort of plague called the "Javorian Pox" which swept across their empire with devastating results, possibly leading to their extinction

The possible existence of other civilizations led to debates in the Senate about how humanity should behave in the stars. A vote was held on a bill calling for rapid expansion across the stars on July 6th, 2201. It passed 799-44. Funding for colonization and exploration was quadrupled and plans for another research ship and a colony ship were set in place.

Following the discovery of another habitable planet in the Sirius system on February 1st, 2203, humanity's first interstellar colony ship, the SRS Hope, with half a million colonists on board, set out for Alpha Centauri on November 22nd, 2203. On May 9th, 2204, it reached its destination and settled down near a river delta on a continent in the northern hemisphere. The Republic was officially an interstellar empire.

The First Colony

On February 16th, 2207, everything changed. The SRS Buenaventura, while exploring the Brockan system, encountered an unidentified object that changed course mid-flight. Initial scans showed that it was metallic, and had a hyperdrive signature similar to the Buenaventura’s. Attempts to hail the craft were met with a response, but the language was an incomprehensible chatter of screeches and clicks. The message was relayed to Earth but the craft entered subspace and left the system before its message could be deciphered. Once again Consul Delacroix and his cabinet gathered, this time with members of the Sol Republican Navy’s Admiralty, to discuss how the encounter should be handled, and if the public should be informed. It was decided that the public should be kept in the dark about the contact until the message could be translated, but the existence of an unknown alien civilization only a few jumps away from the Sol System was a potentially apocalyptic threat, and measures would have to be taken to defend against any potential situations.

First Contact.jpg

Select members of the Senate Intelligence Committee were briefed on the situation and funding for several warships was procured under the guise of “hunting pirates on the fringes of Republican space", though at this time piracy was rare and were usually made of small craft that preyed on private star yachts or small commercial ships. Warships the size of these corvettes were completely unnecessary for any existing pirate threats. Yet by August 22nd, 2207, the alien language was translated by Professor Hoffman, and subspace messages were sent out in the direction of the Brockan System. Within 2 weeks a message was received.

How big is your galaxy? What is your geographical location with respect to Pelx? What is their opinion on the Sol Republic?

I am asking, since in my current 2.0 play, I colonized in 2209 - I spent money on orbital mining first. I also did not encounter any other empire by the year 2218... still looking for one...

The History of the Sol Republic

Chapter 2: Hoping for the Best, But Preparing for the Worst

The Delacroix Reforms and the Race for the Stars: 2207-2211

Communications with the Pelx-Cradonian Compact continued for the next several months over subspace messaging. Republican diplomats and scientists sent details of human history and culture and asked for the same in return. The Pelx-Cradonians’ sent samples of their music, slow hymns glorifying the deeds of various warriors or priests, and art, bright vivid stylized paintings portraying important religious events and battles, as well as a detailed history of their species going back 75,000 years. Their society was extremely religious and militaristic, and focused on the worship of their war gods the “Dimazhan Sky Gods”. According to their texts, the Dimazhan came down from the heavens 75,000 years before contact with the Republic and taught the primitive Cradonians to become civilized. For some 2000 years, the Dimazhan ruled over their world, Cradon, before vanishing in what the Pelx-Cradonians called “The Fall of the Gods”. What exactly happened is unknown, but the Pelx-Cradonians believe that demonic forces waged war against the heavens and though defeated, wounded the gods so deeply that the gods returned to their sky-palace to sleep until the chosen Cradonian would lead their former worshipers to find them and return them to their former glory. After the Fall, the Cradonians slowly let go of their religion over time, and fell apart into warring clans with different beliefs, until 300 years before the first contact with Earth, when a Warrior Priest of Clan Pelx, named Talons of Violet, discovered an ancient holy relic in the labyrinth underneath the ancient Dimazhan Sky Temple. With the relic he found was able to rally the support of his clan, and lead a great crusade across Cradon, unifying the species and forcibly converting the decadent non-believers. From that point on, the Pelx-Cradonians as they were called then known as, began their quest to find their sky gods and awaken them, returning the heavens to the way they were before the Fall.

Though troubled by the fanaticism and warlike nature of the Pelx-Cradonians, the Sol government and military agreed that diplomacy was of the utmost importance, at least until more could be learned about the military capabilities of this new species. A diplomatic meeting in person was set up in the Brockan System between two research ships. Considering the cultural importance of militarism in Pelx-Cradonian society, a military attache of heroes from the Great Interplanetary War was sent with the senior diplomat to the meeting. On March 18th, 2208 the two ships docked with each other and the doors opened to reveal 8 Pelx-Cradonian Warrior Monks, each at least 2.5 meters tall, wearing ceremonial battle armor, who displayed their limb feathers in a martial ritual, and then bowed aside. The Pelx-Cradonian High Priest entered wearing a ceremonial religious gown that had a shiny rippling violet and pink feather pattern. He placed a translator device on the floor and began to speak stating:

It is an honor to meet with warriors from your nation, I am High Priest Feathers of Gold, High Priest of Clan Cratoki, I have greatly enjoyed hearing about this so-called Great Interplanetary War' from your past. I was particularly fascinated by the 5 year Siege and defense of Olympus City on your Colony World "Mars". What valor was won by the brave UDS defenders? The attacking INC force should have scourged their own flesh for failing to take the city for so long... I understand Mars is the name of an ancient god of war of your species?.
The Sol Ambassador Valentino Anselmo responded by introducing Colonel Hironori Nagai, winner of 3 medals for his actions during the defense of Olympus City during the war, allowing the Colonel to explain the origins of his homeworld’s name.

When the High Priest was satisfied with his introduction, Ambassador Anselmo began to discuss negotiating a treaty, but the High Priest interrupted him stating,
I must confess we found it extremely troubling that your species has abandoned its old faith and become so….. Materialistic, how can we trust a species that shows clear disregard to the gods of its ancestors, and no longer worships them. Perhaps your gods punished you with this war for turning your back on them. Why else would so many be allowed to die?

Colonel Nagai responded
Throughout our history we worshiped a myriad of gods, and we killed each other by the millions over them. War and killing are in our nature, gods or no, and I trust that you Pelx-Cradonians will think about that before threatening us.

A flustered Ambassador Anselmo quickly apologized to the High Priest for the Colonel’s response and asked what the Pelx-Cradonians designs were on local star systems. The High Priest stated very clearly that
The Heavens were promised to us by the Dimazhan. They are our birthright. Stay out of our way.

Before the meeting concluded, Ambassador Anselmo responded quickly that no agreement could be reached without compromise, and that he hoped though they clearly could not agree, that peace would be kept between their civilizations.

When news of the results of the meeting got back to Earth, the government was startled. The Admiralty of the Sol Republican Navy suggested tripling the size of the fleet and expanding the fledgling Sol Republican Marine Corps from one brigade to ten. Consul Delacroix decided the public needed to hear the news of this new civilization, and patriotic fervor instilled in them. “Humanity,” he said “needed to be fully prepared for a war for its existence.” He called on the Senate to vote on a massive social reform, turning the entire Republic into a war machine. 33% of factories needed to be producing war materials and every able-bodied citizen would have to serve for 2 years in the military, followed by 15 years in the Reserves.

The Sol Republican Navy (SRN) was expanded from 3 ships to 11. The small Sol Republican Marine Corps was split into 2 branches: the Sol Republican Naval Legion (SRNL), 100,000 strong at its birth, and made up mostly of citizens from the Asteroid Belt and Jovian Moons who were used to low gravity, in charge of defending naval installations and warships from boarding action, and responsible for boarding enemy warships as well, and the Sol Republican Marine Legions (SRML), 13 million strong and organized into 13 legions, 10 from Earth, 1 from Luna, and 2 from Mars, and responsible for planetary invasions. The various former militaries of Earth and colonial security forces on Alpha Centauri were reorganized into the Sol Republican Army (SRA), in charge of defending planets from orbital attack.

Two new Intelligence forces were created as well, The Sol Intelligence Network (SIN), a conglomerate of the former intelligence agencies of the UDS nations before the war involved in espionage, counter-espionage, and the monitoring of dissident groups inside the Republic, and the Naval Intelligence Division (NID), a branch of the navy that specialized in the gathering of intelligence about enemy naval threats and capabilities, as well as gathering intelligence about potential invasion targets for the SRML. To further boost public support for the cause in the event of a war, the Solar Broadcasting Network (SBN) was created to promote government interest to the civilian population.

By 2208 there were still Nationalist guerrilla movements active on 2 continents and on Mars, but the news of a potentially hostile alien empire united humanity like never before. The territory that had previously been Nationalist strongholds now had to turn down volunteers for the Sol Republican Navy because there were too many. The SBN and SIN worked wonders and by 2209, loyalty to the Republic was at a record high of 92%.

Since the Pelx-Cradonian Compact had made it clear that they were racing to colonize the stars, Consul Delacroix called on the Senate to pass a bill tripling funding for space exploration and colonization. There were numerous unclaimed systems in between the two civilizations, some with strategic hyperlane junctions that had to be claimed to ensure victory in war. The next few years saw more systems colonized, with the Sirius System and Romaccus systems colonized in 2209. The stellar borders of the Sol Republic expanded ever outward, with no signs of slowing, except for a slight recession in early 2210. On March 4th, 2210 Consul Guillaume Delacroix was reelected in a landslide, winning 40% of the vote over his nearest rival’s 25%. The political scene back in the Sol System was changing. A new party, the Patriotic Vanguard Party was formed on January 1st, 2211. It was a militaristic imperialist party headed by Consul Delacroix himself, whose platform included increased military expenditure and rapid border expansion.

The Recession of 2210

On March 6th, 2211, the research ship SRS Archimedes encountered a capsule floating to the Galactic East of the Republic’s borders. Inside it contained a relatively freshly dead alien, not of Pelx-Cradonian origin. It was a strange birdlike species, dark with spiky appendages around its head, and wearing what appeared to be ceremonial robes. After a brief discussion with the crew, Captain Luciana Diaz decided it would be important for science to dissect the body to discover more about it.

On June 26th, several cargo ships went missing around the Sirius System, near Pelx-Cradonian Space. An emergency meeting was called with the heads of the military branches and security services to discuss what to do in the event of a war with the Pelx-Cradonians if they were responsible. Admiral Rhonda Bergman suggested launching a preemptive attack on Pelx-Cradonian space, but Roberto Vieira, head of SIN, recommended waiting until further evidence could be found for the cause of the disappearances. He believed that the Pelx-Cradonians, honorable warriors that they were, would not begin a war with small raids on civilian shipping routes. Within a week, NID recon teams reported back. Director Roberto Vieira had been vindicated, and inter-species warfare was avoided for the time being. The attacks had not come from the Pelx-Cradonians, but from fellow man. Humanity was back to its oldest past time; waging war on itself.

1000 stars, I am located only a few systems to the Galactic South of them. They were not overly hostile to me at the time, but they did dislike the fact that I was an infidel materialist, since they were spiritualist. I am jealous that you had such open space in the start. I like getting time to grow large through peaceful colonization before I bump into other civs.

Oh is it "The Watchers" one? I took a look at it earlier today. I'm interested to see how it goes with the whole larger warlike cockroaches situation.

You and me both! So far we’ve been almost even, but they remain stronger. Do want to take them on, but I’m the careful player type. :)

Nothing brigs people together more than a common enemy :)
Knowing humanity, if the government plays it right, it may even be able to shift the ethics into more centralized system.

The incident was interesting. However, I would expect the delegation to be better prepared, knowing that they will speak to a highly spiritualistic nation. The issue "but you don't believe in gods" was bound to be raised. I guess they were a bit lazy and too excited...

Looks good so far. Though I feel that Space 'Murica wibe i personally dislike. Pelx-Cradonians feel a bit more like Fanatic Spiritualist/Militarist than Fanatic Militarist/Spiritualist, though I don't have a problem with that.
