Occupation

In the days following the German surrender the Danish government was established and by mid-March British forces had been withdrawn from the country; Belgian forces taking over our role policing the country until the Danes can re-establish themselves fully. Likewise starting on 4 March British forces started to withdraw west out of the sections of Poland they had occupied, within a week this move had been completed.

The Army Group was reorganised as British Forces Germany and the headquarters was relocated to Berlin; Second Army was made responsible of occupying forces in western German and was now based in Hamburg, while Third Army, based in Dresden, was given responsibility for the occupation of the eastern Germany and Prussia. First Army, with over 70,000 men, was rushed to Yugoslavia to take up strategic positions and form the occupation forces in the Balkans; an additional 30,000 men have been sent to occupy Slovakia have also been placed under the control of First Army.

An Australian and New Zealand Division joined the French in their occupation of Croatia while a further New Zealand and two Australian divisions are supporting French forces within France proper.

While still remaining in a state of war the deal to allow the French to accumulate debt with the nation was cancelled; although the French would continue to beg for the renewal of such a contract we would not allow it, considering they have occupied so much ground. There would be no plans for destruction of Germany's industry. In the last six months of the war German submarines had stepped up their campaign against the merchant fleet, sinking more tonnage in six months than they had done throughout the rest of the war. The Luftwaffe had also stepped up their attacks on the United Kingdom inflicting heavy damage to our factories. German industry and shipyards will now be put to use, to help make up our losses; constructing new fighters, bombers, tanks, transports, as well as helping to increase our naval and general military strength.

Throughout the year the first mechanized infantry brigades were raised and incorporated into the armoured divisions; the latter being organised on a basis of one armoured brigade, one mechanized and one motorised infantry brigade with either a self propelled anti tank or artillery brigade attached. These reorganisations had increased our armoured strength to 14 divisions.

On the 29 June an uprising in Kiel started; 10,000 men dubbing themselves the 1st British Nationalist Brigade – obviously a cover for the Werwolf movement – launched an insurrection resulting in the need for it to be violently put down by one of our own motorised infantry divisions. In a three battle throughout the city 7 soldiers were killed while 629 partisans lost their lives and a further 8,484 were arrested ending the rebellion.

As the year progressed initial plans were laid down for how to conduct the invertible campaign against Italy, the long term occupation plans for Yugoslavia, and what to do over the divided Germany. However thoughts moved towards what punitive actions should be taken against Hungary; enough forces could be amassed on their border to ensure a quick campaign to replace the right wing government, remove the territory gained from her neighbouring states and to inflict revenge for not coming to Poland’s aid thus making our fight much tougher. However before any the ground work to war had been laid down or military plans drawn up, the Hungarians joined the Comintern thus protecting themselves; the government’s position is not risk war with the Soviet Union, they are not our enemy.

On 12 October a deal was signed between the British Empire and the French; the latter relinquished control of their occupation zone placing it under our command. Over the next few weeks French forces moved out heading back to France or towards their Balkan occupation zone and amassing their forces on the Italian borders.

26 November the Borken uprising began; the Werwolf movement started moving towards a vital airbase a few miles away. Within a few hours the RAF fighter-bombers based their started to launch ground attacks against these partisans and the 8th Infantry Division put in an attack. By the end of the month 455 Germans had been killed with 8,454 being arrested, 19 men of the 8th Infantry Division were killed. December passed uneventfully with only minor military movements taking place, 1942 had ended.
