Good work with the wars mate. What advisors are you using other than the diplomat (because lets face it you're not going to be without one)? I guess a Colonial Governer would be useful, especially with LoO to get super fast colonies.

Ideally Japan can wait until R/CR but my cores would expire so I may have to spend more BB now so I can use the Reconquest CB for my cores. DOWing Japan until R/CR just to keep cores alive is cheesy.
Still uncertain about DW's Japan rules, I thought you could just take those cores with Reconquest now that you've disbanded the Shogunate. Apparently not, but would you please explain what's blocking you?

I'm impressed by your current rate of colonisation. That's half the eastern seaboard of both Americas colonized already. I agree wholeheartedly on LoO as your new NI. Well done, too, on your European wars. You might want to think of taking over Bohemia's provinces in Scandinavia; without them, they can easily be cut off from the sea. Is there a chance Milan will take out some island OPMs in the Mediterranean if you cut them off from central Germany, do you think?

He is not being blocked by anything in Japan ... except the fact he doesn't want to spend BB there neither now ( he has to smash the European republics ) neither in the R/CR times ( when he has to take the European monarchies down ) and there is also the WE issues to be maintained especially given that the European wars so far have been quite bloody affairs . It is more a question of when to fit the Japanese wars than anything else ...

BTW @ Prawnstar : How are you going to deal with Aquileia ? Will you engineer a revolt in Trieste to make it a DPM or will you wait to see if they are eaten by Milan ?

Re Japan - Japan the OPM still exists (and I only have Imperialism CB) so even though I've disbanded the Shogunate I still don't have any diplomatic options with the three remaining Daimyos. As I can't DOW them I can't reclaim my cores. I think at some point I should annex OPM Japan for 4BB using Imperialism so I can claim my three cores rather than wait for R/CR annex OPM Japan for 2BB but lose three cores.

That said I haven't actually tried this so i don't know if this is how it will work.

This doesnt sound like the Shogunate is really disbanded ( The event fires every day occupying the provinces with three or more daimyos, but will only work for less than 3 .. at least that was the case in my WC ) That's why Japan is considered broken.

I'm surprised you didn't DOW Denmark in 1671 to get Osel from Burdundy. This time around DOW Hansa for those 3 northeastern provinces.

It's BB inefficient to use Imperialism on Japan to gain those 3 cores, but it's not gamey.
Annexing Austria isolates Hungary. Taking Lienz off Bavaria stops their progress towards the coast and lets Milan annex Aquileia in peace, so to speak. Annexing Tyrol then unites your continental holdings. Bohemia's northern holdings look like they will revolt away. The only one you'll want is Gotland along with their north german coastal holdings. You have a good esult from the Milan-Bohemia war. Decent consolidation. Both decided to stop before revolt risk became too serious -at least Milan did.

I considered the boost to your economy from viceroys to outweigh the quicker colonization from LOO. You've made your choice. I consider 20 extra industrial and high trade good provinces to outwiegh taking the remaining natives. Again, it's your choice. The provinces in northern italy are cheaper warscore wise now than they will be later. You can engineer an isolation of Lonmbardy and capital move and gain Venice and its CoT. Corsica would also need annexing. Norway should be on your annex list, just for daring to invade England.

You'll have to spend a colonist on Khorat. You control the map spread. There are plenty of places to coloize in the East as well, which the naval ranges allow others to settle already.

I think with Japan you need to eliminate another Daimyo which is what is preventing the shogunate from properly disbanding. Is it possible to engineer revolts in the Capital of the OPM daimyo? This may help others annex it for you.

I really think LoO was the better choice, this way he can have 25% more colonies on the go for the same expenditure since it reduces the amount of time colonies take to turn into cities. This means he can lock out the borders easier and prevent European expansion.

Well, I tend to pick Colonial Ventures first, so that I can cover more ground quickly if I go for massive colonial expansion, and to benefit from the random occasional new colony founded by enterprising dudes.
Though I can see the interest of faster global colonial growth when you have 20 or 30 colonies growing at the same time - specially when your economy isn't that great because you're an island and 3/4 of your empire is cut off from your capital by Milan and Bohemia ;)

Wow finally caught up to this thread and before it finished! Not to stray too far off topic here but I'd like to ask prawn about his attrition strategy during war. As a large empire I think it's rather self explanatory(let them take cheap high attrition areas and storm their capital). What I'm wondering about is battle strategy as a smaller country which may or may not be on topic here(would have asked earlier if I'd seen the thread before now). I know prawn mentioned some 30+ pages ago it's a bit dicey using the play as a minor but was still possible.

Let's hypothetically say you have 4-5 territories maybe 1 with hills/mountain and are at war with a larger force. Do you just scorch and fall back to the mountains? Also, are you waiting for assaults or would they be a added bonus? I often have trouble with doom stacks. If they split into smaller chunks I can stack wipe but otherwise I'm a bit helpless. It's a bit difficult to figure out when and how you decide to engage the enemy force from just the results screen. Also, is there some method to your assault squads that make them work well for you? Even at high moral they seem some what helpless in my games with 3-4 tries before success. Is there a good ratio of inf to fort size that works perhaps?

Great work so far and as always your AAR's are highly entertaining. If only they were on youtube and I didn't have to read so much :p

Great thread I have kept up to date mostly lurking.

Questions about the Greek Islands Cyprus and Rhodes. Have they culture flipped to Greek yet? If not would it be possible to fund patriots there and have Crete release The Byzantium Empire?

It would be an intriguing solution were it possible to fund revolts on Crete, Cyprus and Rhodes to recreate either the Byzantine Empire or a Greek nation.

There's a trade off going for speedier colonization and minting in the inflation raises the cost of everything including technology, which makes it harder for pranwstar to maintain parity with other remaining large nations. Trying to keep a high number of cardinals means taking fewer provinces in peace deals and slows down expansion. That may explain why Prawnstar is trying to engineer a lot of 2PMs to munch through.
