Empress Eleonora Daia
Early in Eleonora's rule, she picked up her father's research into the classical gods. Moved by the stories, she decided to convert, rather than be beholden to the standards of the catholic church. Once she did, she went further, and reformed the faith into something more respectable. The Gods wed their siblings and kin, and so too will their followers. Eleonora was also fascinated with the story of the Amazons, and decided that the faith would be reformed following them. Only women would rule outside of extreme circumstances. Additionally, honorable ancestors will be venerated for years to come. And, lastly, the civilized ways of the ancient faith will be perpetuated. No longer will birth order determine who rules, astrology will be studied, and neighboring faiths will be studied. The Pontifex Maxima will henceforth be a singular title, a vassal under the Empress.
From here, the Pontifex Maxima declared a holy war for Bavaria. Christendom failed to defend them, and they quickly fell to the Empress.
In this time, she married her brother, and gave birth to a daughter and a son, Camilla and Ruggerio, before she became barren. The Catholics were not idle, however, and declared a crusade for Iraq, creating a new papal state, well outside the boundaries of the old empire, but something to conquer in time.
In the wake of these wars, she began dedicating important temples to the various Gods. Constantinople was dedicated to Jupiter, Alexandria to Venus, Rome to Minerva, Edessa to Diana, and Athens to Ceres.
After this, Eleonora became a series of campaigns to unite Anatolia. Her campaign began by invading Trebezond, conquering shattering their realm and allowing her to sweep the pieces up.
After years of war and conquest, Empress Eleonora conquered all of Anatolia, and declared herself the new Empress of Byzantium, abandoning the old empire of Romagna. She also abandoned the tributary in Africa, knowing that for Rome to be restored, Africa must rejoin the empire.
And so it was, that the Pontifex Maxima declared a Great Holy War against Africa, and, backed by the imperial army, Africa fell back into Roman hands, and the Empire was born anew, rising like a mighty phoenix from the ashes of past empires thrice over.
While this was happening, however, the Mongol Empire had gotten rather close to the Empress, and she began bribing the various lords and nomads under the empire to destablize the realm. While the steppe will forever be changed by these mongols, and their army a great threat, the efforts were not in vain, and the nomadic empire was greatly crippled, no longer a threat ready to eclipse the might of Rome.
After a few wars for Syria and Armenia, Eleonora knew old age was catching up with her, and adopetd a peaceful policy for her final days. Burning Rome, to purge it of the catholic cathedrals that once plagued it as her final act, she went peacefully in her sleep, and was venerated as an exemplar of the hellenic faith. Her daughter, Camilla, inherited the empire, and was ready to lead it to further glory.
