Book I - Chapter 1
Chapter 1 – Coming to Terms
31st May 1453
Friedrich awoke with a startled gasp. He raised his head off of his desk and looked around his study. The books on the wall had cost him much, yet they were most certainly worth their money. Still half asleep, he faintly perceived a knocking at the door.
‘Who could that be?’, Friedrich wondered sleepily,
‘and what could they want?’
“Come in,” Friedrich commanded, sitting up in his chair.
‘I might as well act regal, even if I do not feel it right now.’
The door opened tentatively. It was his chief servant, Sigismund. He bowed deeply for several seconds, then raised himself back up and averted his gaze. He was a good servant, he knew his place.
“My Lord, I bring a request for your presence in the Chamber of Nobles.” He waited, his gaze still averted. That said, Friedrich could still feel his servant’s gaze on him out of the corner of his eye. It was well known just how much Friedrich hated this Chamber.
“Tell them I will be there at my earliest convenience, Sigismund.” Earliest convenience clearly meant once he had bathed and changed his clothes.
‘In the name of all that is good and holy, did I really fall asleep in what I was wearing yesterday?’
An hour later, Friedrich walked into the Chamber of Nobles, the noblemen all raising as they were supposed to. Friedrich walked to his throne and sat, indicating that all of the nobles could do so as well.
Christian walked into the centre of the room and bowed. Over the past two weeks, Friedrich had come to learn much about this man and was respecting him more every day.
“News has come from the surrounding Kingdom’s,” Christian began, no longer waiting for the King’s permission.
Brandenburg and the surrounding Kingdoms
“My King, I regret to inform you that Mecklenburg, Pommerania, Saxony and Poland have all rejected our overtures to achieve an alliance, or to marry into your family.”
Silence reigned in the room. The same unspoken question was on running through everyone’s mind, ‘
What could they possibly be planning?’
“That said,” Christian continued, “It would appear that the King of Pommerania is interested in marrying his nephew off to your first niece, thus binding our two Kingdom’s together in the future.” Friedrich nodded his approval. She had not been born a good-looking child, yet it would appear that she would still be a useful tool in his plans.
The King rose from his throne. “Very well then, tell me at the very first moment you know more.” For all of his outward calm, he was worried. He did not know if Pommerania alone would be enough to stave off an attack.
Suddenly, the doors leading into the chamber burst open and two men came running into the room. Friedrich vaguely recognised one of them as a Diplomat he had sent forth. He did not recognise the other man.
“My Lord!” They both began, each trying to get his information out before the other. The King resumed his seat and nodded to the man on his left – the Diplomat he had sent forth. One at a time was always easier to hear.
The Diplomat looked grateful. “Thank you My Lord. I bring news form the South. The King of Bohemia wishes to inform you that he is now at war with the people of Poland.”
Stunned silence again reigned.
“Yes, that is right Sir, war on our very border,” the Diplomat looked somewhat flustered. He had probably been riding for days without rest. Friedrich indicated to Sigismund to get the man some wine. The Diplomat smiled gracefully and continued, “Apparently the King of Poland is looking to enforce his claim on the Lausitz area. As you know, this will drag the King of Silesia into the war,” some of the nobles chuckled. Silesia was hardly a Kingdom by anyone’s standards. The Diplomat took a step back indicating he had delivered his message. He awaited a reply.
The King pondered for a moment. Bohemia would be a useful ally; however Poland would be an enemy he would rather not make. Finally, he reached a decision. “Go back to the King of Bohemia with an offer. We shall form into a military alliance, if this would not drag us into a war with Poland. We shall watch his Western and Northern borders to ensure that he is not treacherously betrayed by any of his fellow member states of the Holy Roman Empire.”

The Diplomat nodded, and, draining the cup of wine, ran out of the great Chamber. The other Diplomat stepped forward and spoke his piece. It was only when he began talking that the King realised that this man was not his. He had the distinct accent that marked the man as one of the people from the Kingdom of Saxony, “My Lord, I am thankful to say that my news is much more joyous than that of my colleague. I come from the King of Saxony with a request. He would have us enter into a military alliance to protect our region of the Empire. There are those to our East and West who would see us destabilised. It was only after thinking through your proposal much more carefully that he realised how much merit your idea had.”

The room exploded into applause. Finally, with these two allies the people of Brandenburg could sleep well, safe in the knowledge that their friends were looking over them.
Immediately, ideas started circulating in the King’s mind.
What if we don’t just want to defend?
