Bass Ackwards

I'm doing this a little bit in reverse, but I'm actually going to load the demo on my 2006 computer and play it there first, then go to my now loaded v1.0 HOI3 on my 2009 computer, download the v1.1 patch tomorrow, then start Grofazing..... ;)

I had to overclock my 2006 computer to 3.2 Ghz to help the demo work properly...fortunately, it is a Pentium 805D...one of the first dual cores and perfect for overclocking! I bought it for that specific purpose....I have 6 MB of RAM, so no problems there....

This is a semi-bump....enjoy!

Game looks fun so far....I'm wading into it...I'm going to invade Germany myself (as Britain) to see what is up with this whole Berlin in 4 days thingy....I will be Grofazing as Japan, so I don't see this as too big of a deal, learning curve wise...I will be demo-ing a total of twice before "doing the Grofaz"....

Jeff

GroFAZ??

I'm referring to the GroFAZ challenge, has anyone tried it? I did, but honestly there's not much of "challenge" in it. I must say that I am far from being a very skilled player but even then I managed to remain victorious on all fronts during the first month...It has nothing to do with the HoI2 Götterdämmerung, where you had to abandon France before counterattacking, manoeuver your troops and airforce and so on...I had to retreat in the Baltic states but without any considerable losses, in Ukraine-Romania there was no battles at all AFAIK during a whole month, in Italy I had to retreat in the first weeks but then the troops from Yugoslavia started to come and so the advance of the Allies was stopped, they managed to advance 2-3 provinces deep. In Normandy there was some allied advance but then I counterattacked, encircling 2 armored divisions, they have like 3 provinces left now. Finland has been annihilated but who cares. So far the only real problem was a landing in Wilhelmshafen performedby(guess who) Mexico. That's a bit annoying, I hoped that the AI had not unlimited naval range anymore and if they are based in England then they should become Exp. Forces in my opinion. Anyway there were so much armored divisions just scattered around doign nothing that I sent 2 of them to kill the Mexicans, should be done in a week or so.

So basically the Götterdämmerung scenario is a cakewalk and I'm playing really bad I think, just taking all units that are in the area and throwing them into battle, I almost never used the airforce, don't even know where the planes are.

I hope there will be some patches or mods to increase difficulty, for now the GroFAZ challenge is a bit pointless IMHO.

That's disappointing. I got my butt kicked in this scenario everytime in HOI2! And I had fun while going down in flames!

Question: My download isn't done. You say you encircled 2 armored divisions in Normandy... did YOU do it, or did the AI? I'm not totally sure how HOI3 works yet... I feel like the human doesn't get to move any units. What's your experience? Was it YOU playing the game, or the AI?

Regarding the GröFaZ challenge: It should be noted that as of v1.1, the US, GB and SU have zero air & naval doctrines and almost no land doctrines in the 1944 scenario.

Ok, I've started playing. It's a bit slow going...
I have an
AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor, 2.8 gigahertz
6142 MB Ram
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS 512
so I figure it should be faster...I've probably got something not ideally configured.

Anyway, it's July 3rd and things are awfully quiet. I ordered von Mannstein to lead OB West. Oddly, Fieldmarshall Paulus was available to lead my forces in Italy.
Now, the only front with significant devolopments is Lappland, where the Soviets have outflanked me and I'm retreating to Norway.
Hoping to kick the allies out of france quickly while holding out on the eastern and the Italian fronts, I assigned a ton of Mobile forces to it, several corps actually, most under Guderian. Mostly, my troops have contained the Allies in Normandy, though I did accidentally surrender my garrison of Cherbourg. At the same time, OB west seems to be sending a lot of troops to the other fronts, while claiming it needs over 70 armoured divisions, 1000 infantry, and 10 BBs. But they aren't even using all the troops I gave them (the creme de la creme of the German forces).
Well, since I've abandoned all construction in favor of Supplies, Reinforcements and sometimes upgrades, maybe my forces will be stronger in the fall and I can order an attack on the Allies in Normandy...I may be able to beat them since their frontage is limited and they're all crowded in.
Also, I some units are apparently very poorly supplied, even though I have enough to go around...odd.

Also, I appear to be using only half my available IC, despite no resource shortages. Weird, all the modifiers I can see are positive.

*edit* never mind, it was just written in a different order than I was used, and my brain was faster than my eyes again.

Ouch....that is not cool! Perhaps they figured everyone would rush to play only 1936 :( I'm sure they will fix it!

On the other hand german doctrines are hardly researched either, AFAIK all doctrines are 1936 or 1918 level, Radar is not researched so you can't build any although there are lots of them on the map, and the nuclear research is not even started either, which is a bit silly, I mean come on Germans in 1944 having made no progress on atomic bombs?
Anyway I would say the problem is not the doctrines but the overall force distribution/AI agressiveness, you just should not be able to hold the line in Bielorussia and Normandy like I did.

What difficulty ?

I did it on normal, no AI control(just didn't care about diplomaty and stuff).

That's a drag.....so I suppose the Grofaz is off for a while, eh?

Well if we play Götterdämmerung now it's not Grofaz since it's too easy and the scenario is unfinished, and if we wait until it gets better it will not be Grofaz anymore anyway since we'll play the grand campaign meanwhile and get used to the game, once we know all the tricks it's not Grofaz anymore according to Alexander Seil. So basically this challenge is a fail, sad but true. :(

Scenario is completely unfinished. Took a couple hours of pure tedium to set myself up correctly (notably, appointed missing leaders and shifted a few)... and started kicking Allied ass in Normandy and brought Bagration to a shamefully quick end. I was disgusted.

I might give that scenario another try, but when it has been properly reworked.

*Sigh* ...well, I have decided to put off my Grofaz challenge until at least v1.2....so, it looks like my shiny new copy of HOI3 will go on the shelf for a little while, and I will return to playing EU3 for the near term...I will still be reading the manual, and I haven't even finished the first of two times I will play the demo, so I will still be anticipating doing this....

Jeff

Loaded the game, started up as Germany... Could barely figure out what country was even what. The map looks beautiful but it almost worthless for giving quick information. Territory colours laid over-top of each other, the lack of distinct borders at further zoom levels and the lack of any vibrant colours whatsoever means my poor slightly colourblind self is totally lost without a careful (and annoyingly slow) study of every little section of the map as I interact with it. I figured I'd try to learn to play HoI3 with counters despite being a longtime sprite user, but that doesn't help either... Every single stack has "HQ" at the top. That makes the "HQ" designation completely pointless.

Anyway... kinda stunned, I figure I'd let a few hours or days pass and see what happens. What happened? Not much. A few attacks by both the British and the Soviets, both of which I managed to clamp down on in a couple days... And that's about it. No Allied bombing? Not really. And where did Uncle Sam go? Are the American units part of the British force in Normandy? I guess that's kinda cool, considering that several of my ancestors from that generation fought with various commonwealth armies, but let's be reasonable... I mean, Eisenhower was supreme commander, wasn't he? At least this way I see the British washed out red colour over allied occupied territory, not the American washed out blue over my German washed out grey, which is already over the French washed out blue. Ugh.

Anyway, suffering from information overload, and facing an existential crisis over the fact that very little seemed to be happening, our Furher decided to suck on a gun barrel, and his successors hit the surrender button some time in mid August, bringing my Grofaz challenge to a pitiful, dissapointing close. On the plus side, the axis had the most victory points by a landslide, so I think I win! Umm... yeah... it might be time to put HoI3 to rest until we get another patch or two and a map mod that actually allows me to see what is happening.
