Not just all of the auto generated generals but all of your vassals levies are assigned no generals. I forgot about that.
Good post, and I agree with everything you say. Jockeying for status and prestige (on the nobility's end) and dealing with arrogant and entitled higher nobility (on the king's end) are huge parts of the time period, but a lot of times it feels like they're barely in the game. It's not just picking commanders for your armies, either; nobody seems to care if the guy you've picked to be chancellor or steward of the kingdom is a titleless courtier or mayor of some random village. These positions really ought to be restricted to counts and above until high or absolute CA, at the very least. The whole game side with selecting leaders is SNAFU at present.
I think in the CK2+ mod there is a decision that states, when courtiers ask for a position, "never ask me again"
For balance issues they have patches. If the next DLC was just a balance package, with no new features added (i.e. four or six weeks of project effort just about balancing and fixing) I'd buy it still.
This Issue needs to be fixed somehow. If it was to me, you would simply not get Courties to lead every 500 Retinue. This mechanic also makes it way too easy to get good commanders.
They really need to fix this, and quickly. I hope they don't make it so it is fixed only in the new Aztec dlc though... PLEASE PATCH IT IN!
Oh, just wait until you get to the late game parts and the fact that every ruler now has a 100+ person court. Watch as the lag devours the game. I usually try not to label something as making the game 'unplayable' but this one just about does it. There are so many annoyances to having these giant courts that the game has lost a LOT of its fun for me. I used to be mildly annoyed when every single lord in my realm would want to be my court chaplain but now with all these randomly generated people it's just plain obnoxious. Now every one of them constantly demands that every single council position be theirs.
The solution is to not have a massive retinue.
Every time i overtake a new duchy with a Holy War or IR CB i go through the court and go through the generated leaders, marrying them to random female courtiers if available and then assigning them cities or bishoprics in order to remove up to two people from the court for each non castle barony. This essentially allows them to take the pace of auto-generated vassals with a slightly higher degree of control and gives you the feel of landing accomplished soldiers of your army.
Obviously you then assign the county and duchy title to an unhanded member of your dynasty and never need to worry about your former courtiers again.
If your rate of conquest and title revocation keeps pace with your retinue growth, i've found this keeps the Roman court at around 17-20 souls.
Sorry for the possible necro but has there been any indication from Paradox that this is going to be fixed?
At the moment, my strategy is to stay a superduke and only create/usurp a king title when a couple of celibate guys show up in the realm. Grant them the counties and excess duchies, they're so grateful you get 80+ relations to them. Since they're celibate, they die childless and you get to inherit their duchies/counties again. Rinse, repeat. It's far safer than granting excess duchies to your designated heir.
But with the retinue system, you inherit all their lowborn generals from their retinues too. Every time!
