The game is running slow as molasses.

I have an 8400 with 8 gigs of 1066 and a 295, days take foreverrrrrrrrrrr and if you start in 36 then its ages before anything happens.

A 2d game with sprites and minimal "crunching" shouldn't require a gillion core i7 with 6 sli'ed 295's and 16 gigs of ddr3 to run, at least i don't think so.

I also do not know what I'm doing, but that's my fault

From what I can tell, this apparent "Consumer Goods Bug" is nothing more then a WAD

The bigger your military is, the more consumer goods and supplies your nation will consume. The start in 1936 has it so most nations economies are just strong enough to match its military requirements. Hence consuming all the IC for its upkeep.

It is not until you research improved efficiency techs and the gradual mobilization of your economy (due to aggresion) that lets you expand your economy to such a degree that you can start mass producing a military.

I like this, it means the super militaries of HOI2 are a thing of the past and means that nations must more conservatively use resources.

Thats not true, check the thread in the bug-section: http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?t=417183 .

Its true that the effect you describe is desired, but it is too big, atm.

too slow

game would rock if ....

... it ran faster!
Took me 2+ hours just to endure 1936 and 1937.
This is BS and should be patched first.

... we could have the old units sprites back (panzers/soldiers/planes etc) and not NATO symbols, immersion was much higher with old sprites in HOI2.

... the HQ system wasnt THAT massively overwhelming and complicated. I feel like an amateur although I played HOi2 forever.

... if cities like Stalingrad were at the right place (cmon STALINGRAD! one of the most famous WW2 cities!)

Well, here's my 2 cents:

No auto trade and no auto sliders. I want everything myself, but the sliders? Come on! For now I'll be playing HOI2 and wait for version 1.3 or HOI3 Doomsday or something. All the improvements from HOI2 thrown away, such a shame...

I tried the gc as Italy, but gave up in April. Everything was going smoothly till I annexed Ethiopia. I noticed that I had to spend half my ic on consumer goods, and i was running low on some of my resources. I tried to trade energy with metal, but no matter what kind of deal I gave, or who I traded with, it was impossible. The game in it's current state is unplayable. I feel dumb for paying $40 to join a beta testing.

dude, learn to play the game before you whine, you have so insane problems because:

1: you still have a war economy, which is BAD in peace time which leads to even higher consumer goods
2: your ic is to high because of the the economy, and therefore demands insane amounts of resources, for each ic you got to support it with resources, did you really think you could have 140ic or something in 1936 with italy when japan has 50or something? :p lol
3: the new trade system is based around cash, if you look closely you are actually trading that iron for cash, so they are paying cash for your iron which they arent interested in dooing, try trading metal for cash in a standalone deal, so that you again can trade cash for energy, for example. Trust me i also learned this the hard way  only difference is that i didnt go straight to the forum complaining the game is rubish, but used 5 mins to actually learn the game.

Other issues, map will be fixed by modders, just wait one or two days, jeez. The sliders, well you dont really have to check em every second do you? it takes ages before supplies goes to zero, production is static, and reinforcements/upgrades will still upgrade in red, the autoslider is not a big deal, just stop beeing lazy and think alittle.
The real issues though are the speed and the lagg, it has to be fixed if the game is to be enjoyable

My current criticism is almost completely based on the force structure and the missing overview.

  • If I look at the outliner, I really don't care wheter the HQ of OBWest has 20% strength or if it's got all 3000 troops. My main interest is the strength of the entire formation. If I see "Army Group South: 50%" that should mean the entire army group (i.e. All units under the command of this HQ) is at 50% strength, not just the HQ.
As it is now, the outliner is basically useless unless the entire tree is expanded down to the division level.
  • On a similar note, if I select a HQ on the map, I get no real information about the strength of the underlying forces. To copy my interface suggestion from another thread, I'd like the unit screen changed from the current left one to the right one.
    unitv.jpg
    unitnew.jpg
  • Province improvements should have their cost and build time adjusted to the current values if you have a serial build. Right now it's cheaper to expand a port/airbase/factory/etc by one level and once that's completed, start building the next level, because that way the 2nd building will benefit from the practical experience gained from building the first one (and potential further tech benefits like industrial efficiency research).
If you're building units, cost is correctly adjusted after each individual unit is built, so why shouldn't it work the same way for buildings. I realize this is a relatively minor issue, but it's just doesn't make sense.
  • Obviously, auto sliders. Only got more annoying when I noticed that every time I leave the production screen the exact slider values change by a little bit, despite me having just fixed them with the need button. Now I've started to just ignore the largely useless IC wasted alert.
  • While I'm on the topic, if I build more supplies than I need, I'm not wasting IC, so don't show the alert. Meanwhile the production AI will actually waste IC by not allocating the surplus to producing supplies.
  • Similar to the production sliders moving, if I enter the research screen, the sliders will move by a little bit. Once I leave the screen again, it can happen that the research slider is .02 higher than needed, prompting the alert. Only way to avoid this is either only allocating certain leadership amounts to research that won't get moved too far, or clicking the need buttons everytime I want to leave the screen. Once again minor but annoying.

i am a devoted fan of paradox and i almost have all their games..

its the 2nd time after Rome that i feel like i got an unfinished product. I know paradox along with moders will fix it but i paid 40e for this..

Next time i will wait till 3 patches some mods and the 50% discount to buy a game.Sorry

hear hear. Same feeling here. This game clearly has the potential to become one of the best WWII simulators. The developers have clearly put a lot of hard work in there, but the gameplay simply is not addictive, immersive or fun. It feels too much like beancounter work:

1) In HOI2 I started to play immediately, and I consulted the manual and wiki afterwards to make my gameplay better. With HOI3 it is reversed: I have to wade through incredibly boring manual before I can even understand to make a decent attack.

2) The fact that the "outliner", one of the most important interfaces is accessed by a tiny - hard to see - "+" somewhere on the right says it all. The GUI designer simply forgot that HOI is not bought only by die hard wargamers.

3) Ok, I have to read the manual. I could stilll accept that in a wargame. But The manual is rambling about all the obvious stuff, but does not tell me for example how I can quickly attach divisions or brigades to a certain HQ/ General whatever. Every real nugget of information is hidden in a sea of rambling.

4) Instead of a few tens of generals + units in HOI2, I now have to chose between micromanaging hundreds of small armies or to leave it up to the AI and manage only the large armies. No fun.

5) Why is everything from research to armies pictured like an accounting program? The generals get tiny pictures that you would not recognize if you have not seen them in HOI2, units are pictured as NATO symbols and not the famous Shermans, panthers and Tigers that made WWII simulations so interesting and I get an overload of numbers when I click on units.

6) The Tech tree is back to HOI1: It is overly complex, and hard to keep overview.

7) The map: the mountains are decent, but everything else lacks immersion. The sandy deserts look too much like steps in Russia.

8) If several units can not be merged or transferred to another HQ, the software responds like a stubborn child: it says nothing and does nothing. Lots of time you don't get feedback from the controls. Tell me for crying out loud what I am doing wrong so I can learn the game while playing!

All in all, superb WWII simulation engine but a horrible interface. A racecar that got the steering of a bicycle. :(

hmm, trading is indeed a bit weird, if realistic, at least in HoI2 you could actually get trades, no country seems to be willing to selling rare materials or crude oil to me (germany) though. I really don't see much point in removing this kind of steady income stream of rare materials that was basically a normal trade agreement. I think its a bit overly complicated that first you gotta sell energy for money and then buy crude oil in lump sum deals. Why not trade agreements if theyre willing to sell in lump sum deals anyways?

loss of autoslider is a big loss of course, there's no way around it, stop calling people names about it, that's just childish man...

It was so useful in HoI DD. I infact used it most of the time during war and peace, only when you had peacetime reinforcements to fill or lots of upgrades you would not use the autoslider and you would just lock those sliders at zero.

But I have a bad feeling that its not coming in a patch at all, paradox will probably just milk money from such a simple feature that already existed in HoI2 era and release it in an HoI3 expansion or something. Ridiculous. :(

I have to second almost everything here.

And I'd like to add a really minor but nonetheless annoying problem. The Democratic Party was in power in the US during the era, not the Democrat Party. "Democrat Party" is a derogatory term for the party used by republicans. ;)

Aside from terrible map and poor historical research (data looks like transferred from HOI2, and there were also such problems) the interface is cumbersome and simple actions take a lot of time to execute - no shortcuts to select a leader or unit from ledger and on clicking being transfered to his/its location, you have to find everything manually. Also, attaching/detaching units should be done for example by drag and drop in the outliner. A special ledger padge should be added with oob shown - now it's very hard to find what divisions you have and where they are, the only pages are that deal with zillions of brigades, while the armies operate on the basis of divisions.

Buenos Aires is out of place, also Partido Justicialista and Frente para la victoria should not exists by this time. Also Is there any form to play viewing the units, I mean infantry, tanks, graphics! instead of that things that represent divisions?

i am a devoted fan of paradox and i almost have all their games..

its the 2nd time after Rome that i feel like i got an unfinished product. I know paradox along with moders will fix it but i paid 40e for this..

Next time i will wait till 3 patches some mods and the 50% discount to buy a game.

Sorry

You must not have played Hoi2 V1.1 then, because if you had, than you would be worshiping Hoi3 right now.

There are some problems but there are a lot of things I'm really enjoying.

The CG issue is clouding many aspects at the moment but once this is fixed I hope it will solve some of the other gameplay issues with some nations struggling.
I really like the new HQ command system and although it took me a few minutes to get my head around it I now feel completely comfortable moving units around within the control structure, love it.
Graphics are ok, I've modded the map colours myself to my own taste and I'm happier. I do agree with a lack of urban provinces, should be a few more I think.
New technology system is a big improvement in my view. Trading for resources is better, much prefer the cash mechanism. Convoys easier to manage.
Definitely runs slow though and on my PC when I quit the game the PC does a reboot, probably due to pagefile dump.

I'm expecting the next patch to come out very soon and tackle the CG issue and hopefully performance.

Not exactly an official position, but the developers got sick of everyone moaning about map errors, and Johan basically said that they weren't errors, they were meant to be like that due to the projection they use and the limitations of the Clausewitz engine

I'm tempted to just switch the tags and what not for Stalingrad, and a province where it should be, I'd imagine that would work, though I don't know if the little urban city displayed on the Terran map would transfer, not that I really care.
