Yahoo! It's back.

Damn. I'll send you an emergency e-drink. Can't have you going without for 3 whole days. A stretch like that would put me straight into the hospital or the loonie bin.

As ever, those instalments are great...love your running commentary but I think we really need to work on your mood and music selection. Let's see...how about playing the Beatles' Revolution #9 over and over and over again (backwards and forwards)?

LD: It's too late...he's already lost it. :D

My God!

I thought this AAR had been consigned to the dustbin of time..... But... It is alive.

Or, to quote Calvin & Hobbes:

How many boards,
would the mongols hoard,
if the mongol hordes
got bored?

If the answer isn't an entire board, it is at the very least a respectable part of a subforum thereof.

Steppe on it, man!

Time for some (sorely neglected) feedback before I delve into a new Steppe:

LD: Thanks for the offer, but I think I'll hold off the visual aids till I get closer to the end. After all, at the moment, not a lot is happening, yet I've still managed to take over 50 screenshots

Norg: Me too. I booted up the old comp and was delighted to realise I still had this old game on it, so play I did :)
As for the climate, I was lucky in that most of my low-support wars were able to be fought quickly, though attrition was still painful.

RJ: Thanks, when are we going to be delighted by a solo AAR from yourself? and i you've started, please forgive me and point me in the right direction ;)

MrT: Cheers, the e-drink really hit the spot :D I'll admit, I've been skipping all over the city lately so I've hardly had time to check out any new music, but my dad packs a fair punch of oldie stuff, so I'll go and raid his selection :)

P. Ebbeson: Wow, a new reader :D That little ditty seems to have escaped my poring over of the C&Hs selections...;)

Thanks all for the support and fingers held over the 999 dialer, in case my liver gives out :D

Steppe coming up.

Welcome one and all, again, to the greater bunglings of the Drunken Horde.

Music: Dire Straits, Ash and the Sound Track to Lord of the Rings part 1...oh yeah :)
Drink: After an off-on drinking binger lasting 4 weeks, I've been left with plenty of half empty bottles. So, I've got some 20-odd lowenfink beers, 6 Amsterdams (at something like 13% alcohol), 1 bottle of dodgy vodka, 1/2 a bottle of good vodka, 1/3 a bottle of coke to mix with it, and a large pack of paracetamol.
TV: Who needs any stinkin' TV when I'm colonising?
Mood: Swaying with drunkeness

The dawning of 1580 heralds the conversion of Vorones. I celebrate by sending out all 6 of my hoarded (aha) colonists. Few succeed. You know, for the first time in 80 years, I'm having money troubles as rebellions, colonists and conversions eat away at my cash supplies.

Just as I'm in further Dire Straits with the Sultans of S'wing (aka, Vijanar (sp)) I get a much needed investment in the navy. Seeing this, I disregard the coke altogether and instead take a hefty shot of bacardi and spend the next 20 minutes wretching.

As if the computer was already sensing my inebriated playing style, I'm hit by a Religious Turmoil events a few years later...And, silly me, I forgot to pause the game while I was relieving my stomach of its excess belongings.

On my return, and a few more years of ruthless - not to mention lopsided - rebel hunting, I bring about the diplomatic annexation of the Khazak Horde. I think. It was either a diplo-annex or a really quick war.

Adding insult to the injury that is repeated 'investments in the navy', I gain an explorer in Kerch. What, pray tell, have I done/drunk to deserve this? My stomachs still doing muscle acrobatics, but the arrival of the explorer has got me down so I open up one of the many lowenfinks.

However, seeing as I've sobered up remarkabally since emptying last nights curry into the sewer system, I've decided to make use of the naval tech 1 explorer, so I buy him some company in the form of 2 absurdly expensive ships (costing in at 77 ducats each). The finishing touches are put to them in '87, so off they go!

In other, World News, Songhai decalres themselves Sole Defender of the Muslim Faith, much to the amusement of almost everyone else (including me). I toast their happiness with another healthy chug.

Back to the exploits of the Mongolian Horde, my 'explorer' dies of attrtion after exploring one province just off the coast of Spain. Well, that says it all, doesn't it? What little interest I held for the big blue yonder vanishes.

As a final, parting act before the Steppe finishes, I annex my last remaining vassal, Kurdistan (remember them?) in July, 1589. Heralding the end to one drunken escapade and beginning another as I don my coat and head off to my local - where everybody knows my name, dum dum dum...*ahem*

End of steppe, er, 16, if I believe correctly. I'm off to get my ass handed to me on a plate at Unreal Tournament now, so I'll be back a bit later to write up another segment. Ciao, for now.

Nah, an old reader who is, ever so slowly, admittedly, coming to the realisation that others may have other criteria for desired feedback than I have - which has occasioned a feedback spree of unprecedented proportions - for me, that is - and when I saw that this was alive and kicking ass again (although soberly), I had an obvious candidate :D

It would be nice to see a screenshot of your horde. Pleaseeee.

And for your mongol invasion of China (coming soon to a screen near you), might I suggest Wagner's Ride of the Valkyries to set the right mood?

My humblest apologies Mr Ebbesen. Thanks for the support and the suggestions.

MrT, well, the opening shot of bacardi really messed me up for a long while. After mixing it, I was sick a few times, yet felt much better, so I carried on playing. As you'll see, however, it pretty much dominated the next Steppe (tm)

_______(By the way, as a disclaimer, I played this some time the night before last, after I got back home from the pub, so it wasn't just the bacardi that was messing me up. It might also explain some of the dumb-ass decisions I made)

Music: The lord of the rings soundtrack was getting a tad repetative, so turfed it out of the CD player slipped in a self-mixed CD with songs ranging from 'A' to 'Jack Off Jill' to 'New Found Glory' to 'Electrasy' and back again. But then, I'm showing off more of me than I like by saying that  :p  :D (<- me trying to use up my smiley count)
Drink: Since this is still the same session, I'm still working on my 4th Lowenfink by this point. Still no hint of a Smithwicks out there though. Stupid country and its stupid suppliers.
TV: My mind can only latch onto so many things at once, so once again, I skipped the TV part.
Mood: Quesy

Suspiciously, the Steppe is heralded by another converted province in September of 1590. I frown at the monitor and mumble incoherantly for a few minutes (I actually wrote that in my notes, oddly enough) until the computer throws a few more revolts my way. bah.

Anyway, with Mekran now happily Sunni, this leaves me 1 Orthodox and 2 Shi'ite provinces left...and four Hindu, and 6 Buddhist. Sob.

As I detailed in the last Steppe, my annexation of my last vassal left sans alies, so, I figure its time to cast around for a new buddy or buddies. Through a foggy alcoholic haze, I see I have two choices:

Mamuluks:-
Pros: Strong, powerful, large
Cons: I intend to expand in their direction, low tech, surrounded by enemies, hate me

Ottodudes:-
Pros: Advanced, comparitively great leaders, possible vassals, good position to strike at Egyptians
Cons: Small (restricted largely to their peninsula and a weak hold on Europe), embroiled in European wars often

I choose Turkey.

1593, I manage to catch a glimspe of my new years taxes: 463. Heh. Half of that immediately goes to missionarys. I concentrate mostly on the Shi'ite and Orthodox now as the Hindu and Buddhist provinces have an obscenely success rate (about 8%) and enormous costs.

My colonisation drive gains another boost as a conquistador makes himself available. In a alcohol-addled moment of drunkeness, I send him marching across India. He gets from Moscow (where he was found) all the way to Fars before I catch the bugger and aim him for Siberia with instructions 'not to stop till you drop'

Good grief, I crack me up.

However, as his first act in unclaimed territory, he loses all but 22 of his brave men to reckless natives. The surrounding provinces immediately begin a plans to start churning out soldiers to escort him in these obviously dangerous expediations.

In 97' (i had no idea it was that late already), an heir is born. I bet we don't see him, eh? ;) My current monarch, Sayyid or something, has been ruling for quite some time, about 80 years or so Ibelieve and from the looks of things, it doesn't look like he's giving up the throne any time soon.

To top off the end of a somewhat successful Steppe, Bastar spontanuously converts. Probably because they're bored with me periodically sending over missionaries

Thats it for today, I've played through another couple of steppes, but ti gets pretty grim from here on in, as i concentrate on colonising. So maybe I'll do a 3-in-1 bundle tomorrow sometime? Geh.

Expect some screenies (PE stylee) tomorrow. Cheers all and thanks for reading :)

Hadn't thought about it actually. The next 2 weekends aren't very good for me...the following (Aug 31, Sept 1, 2) is a holiday weekend for us (probably for you too) and I haven't made any plans yet so any of those days would be okay.

Watch out for those Black Russians. They have a tendency of sneaking up on you.

How about this in stead:

Ok, with leaving for University coming up and many, many booze trips planned, I've decided to get a little bit more of this old AAR done while I still can. First, feed-back:

MrT: Did I mention I'd tried a Black Russian. I wont forget that in a hurry :D

Backpack: Noted, sir. As you'll see, I've picked this up again, as per your request ;)

Shawng1: Who wouldn't?

Jythier: George Thoroughgood...not heard a lot of his. I'll try and see what I can get hold of(thank god for KaZaA :D)

Post coming up soon y'all.

Music: Picked me up the new Red Hot Chili Peppers album.
Drink: My father was good enough to allow me to get drunk before staggering out the door. Sadly it's Lowenfink again...
TV: Nah, music instead.
Mood: Nervous

Ok, current tally of religious dissenters:

1 orthodox province left.
1 shi'ite
3 Hindi
7 Buddhist (with an 8% conversion chance, these aren't going anytime soon)

First things first, while I'm still nominally sober, I concentrate on colonisation. I can't trust myself to place settlers when I'm drunk. Though oddly enough I'd trust myself with wars...

Half way down the Siberian corridor, my explorer meets some Chinese chaps heading the other way. I redouble colonisation efforts in fear.

A royal hunt in 02 seeing relations with England go down. Who the hell invited them? Send their pommy asses back to that god forsaken island! *ahem*

Another conquisitodor makes himself known. In Ishafan of all places. About 30 provinces straight from the nearest terra incognita. Riiiiiiiight...
Well, stupidity aside, he heads over to Siberia where he'll actually be useful.

Tax 1608: 601. Excellant.

That's it. I spend most of this step drinking and colonising, now that the Chinese are playing the same game. Since the next Steppe is so damn short as well, I'll stick that on the end of this one as well:

The Same, dammit.

The only thing of interest is the Netherlands get round to declaring independence. And it's about time as well. That was in '13.

While Colonisation goes ahead at a happy, happy pace, the exploration takes a turn for the worse when Batna dies. Pity. I have another beer in his honour.

See what I mean? It's rather, rather short. I've seen replies longer than that. And that's 10 years game play. Mind you, at the time it seemed to go quite quickly, (things do when you're drinking alone...)
