January 1, 1492

I have been appointed the Minister of Vinland today by our king, Asegeir Egilsson. I surveyed our realm, carved out of the wilderness and the pride of all who dwelt within it. We had 400 ducats in the treasury, excellent (+3) stability and the provinces of Nova Scotia (our capital), Fundy, Micmac and Bangor, as well as our colonies in Gaspesie (Level 5), Isle Royale (Level 3) and Wabana (Level 2). We still used mostly battleaxes (Land Tech 0), but were excellent seafarers (Naval Tech 2) and skillful traders (Trade Level 1). Additionally, a Vinland princess was married to a Danish price, giving us contact with that country. She would give us excellent intelligence about what happened in the old lands. We also have 10,000 infantry and 2,000 calvary stationed in Nova Scotia.

I started by trying to send some of our merchants to earn profit for us in Europe. To my great chagrin, it was well beyond our means (I could only access the northern CoTs which were worth little, and had to pay 16 ducats per merchant). Therefore, we decided instead to use 185 ducats from our treasury to fund three colonists to our three colonies.

January 3, 1492

We recieve word that Lorraine has entered a military alliance with France, Savoy, Brittany and the Papal States. This is of little importance to us.

February 3, 1492

The Turkish heathens have joined the Swedes and the Finns in an alliance. Fortunately, they are far from Vinland's shores.

February 28, 1492

The court has recieved word that Grenada was annexed by the Spainish. We wish our fellow Christian breathren good tidings in their dealings against the heathens.

March 1, 1492

We expanded our colony in Gaspesie to a city, and Isle Royale to a Level 4 colony. However, we believe that our colonists on their way to Wabana were killed by Skraelings.

We hear that in distant Europe, the Pope has divided the world into Spainish and Portugese spheres of influence in the Treaty of Tordesillas. Alas, Vinland has been marked under the Spainsh sphere of influence! The nobles are enraged, but we lack the capability to take vengence in any way.

March 2, 1492

We learn that the Netherlands has joined the Swedish alliance (Sweden, Finland, Turkey), Portugal with the Hansa, Pommerania and Holstein, Hungary with Austria and Bohemia, Navarra with France, Brittany, Savoy, Papal States and Lorraine. Being across the sea from Europe, Vinlanders ignore these ominious tidings in Europe.

March 4, 1492

It appears that the Swiss (a nation that we know only through legends) have joined the French alliance. Again, this latest arrangment does not really impact Vinland.

March 17, 1492

Through travellers, we hear that the nation of Baden has joined with the Austrians, Bohemians and Hungarians in an alliance.

March 23, 1492

The Spainish, English and Milanese have made a devil's bargin with the heathens of distant Persia. We are troubled by these dealing the Europeans have with the heathens, but again, we can do little.

March 26, 1492

Venice has joined the Trader's Allinace (Hansa, Pommerania and Holstein, Portugal).

May 1, 1492

Using another 53 ducats from the quickly declining treasury, we send another group of colonists to Isle Royale. At the same time, we arrange to marry into the Swedish royal family, and improve our relations with Sweden.

July 1, 1492

Not much has happened this summer. We recieve word that our colonists to Isle Royale were lost in a storm. We can give only condolences to their kin, but we fear that we will be unable to sustain Vinland's growth much longer.

September 2, 1492

We decide to send another band of colonists to Isle Royale, paying anotehr 53 ducats. One of Egilsson's sons has married a French countess, reinitiating contact with the French and improving relations with them.

November 2, 1492

A message has arrived telling me that our colonists have arrived in Isle Royale safe and sound. (Isle Royale to Level 5)

November 3, 1492

Our European friends tell us that Poland-Lithuania has allied with the Trader's Alliance. On the same day, we recieve two offers of a military alliance, one from Denmark (Norway), and the other from weden (Finland, Turkey, Netherlands). We decide to join the Swedish alliance. On the same day, Naples allies with Spain (England, Persia, Milan)

November 18, 1492

We recieve word that France (Savoy, Papal States, Brittany, Lorraine, Navarra, Helvetica) has declared war on England (Milan, Naples). The Spainish and persians duck out of the English alliance.

November 27, 1492

Greece has joined the Danish alliance (Denmark, Norway).

December 20, 1492

We learn that milan was won a battle against Savoy in Savoie.

January 1, 1493

Census day comes around, and I finally figure out why our king has been biting his fingernails nervously everytime I mention spending moeny on colonization. For we have collect a grand total of 11 ducats. I decide that we must continue our rampant colonialism, and take a loan.

At the same time we become more adapt in adminstration, and learn how to promote baliffs to tax collectors (Infrastructure Level 1). A brave adventurer, Ottar Gramse appears at our doorstep and with our blessing he goes off with a thousand brave Vinlanders to find new lands to the west and the south.

We also sent a band of colonists to Isle Royale for 51 ducats, and another to a distant land called Manhattan for 62 ducats.

January 3, 1493

We have married ourselves into the royal linage of Scotland. We have some hope for inheriting that country, but at the least we'll get some information about Scotland.

January 21, 1493

We overhear that France has won a crushing victory over teh Milanese in Milan.

February 1, 1493

The Hapsburgs have aligned their nations together, with Spain joining Austria, Bohemia, Hungary and Beden in an alliance.

February 3, 1493

Russia (Crimea, Ryazan, Pskov) has gone to war with Kazan.

February 24, 1493

We have learned that Kazan have won a victory over Ryazan in Ryazan.

March 2, 1493

We have upgraded Isle Royale to a city, and established a colony in distant Manhattan. The natives there are kind folk, are sell us some furs for mear trinkets. We decide it is a good land to settle for the glory of Vinland.

March 3, 1493

Astrakhan (what foreign land is this?) has allied itself wit the Golden Horde (and they would be?). In somewhat mroe well know lands, Scotland has joined the Danish alliance, and Cologne the Austrian one. The English have recruited the heathen nation of the Mameluks to fight for them. As I hear about this, I absentmindedly wonder why they don't call the first week of every March alliance week.

March 8, 1493

We recieve word that the Kazan (who we couldn't tell apart from man eating bears) have defeated the Russians in Ryazan.

March 20, 1493

The heathen nations of nubia and the Hasfid Empire have become allies. I am more interested in smiting this annoying fly on my desk.

April 10, 1493

We hear that Ryazan have failed to beat off the Kazan in their homeland once again.

April 11, 1493

Russia has apparently won a victory over the Kazan in a land known also as Kazan.

May 2, 1493

I personally dispatch another band of hardy adventurers to Manhattan, paying 60 ducats for their passage and their supplies. I consider forcing the captains to let colonists travel for free, but eralize that it isn't worth the trouble.

May 6, 1493

England has apparently scored a victory over the Frnech in Land's End. It must really be Land's End for we have no clue where it is.

May 7, 1493

A messenger hurries into the Royal Court and informs us that Ottar Gramse has discovered the new land of Rimouski to the north of Bangor, Micmac and Fundy. I consider the risks and benefits of sending some colonists there, but I don't think its worth it just yet.

May 12, 1493

We learn that Milan has fallen to the French , and the French has annexed Milan. Nearly every Catholic nation has delivered a message of complaint to the French court, and we are no different.

May 20, 1493

A rampaging English army has been halted in Lyonnais by the Navarrese.

June 18, 1493

A combined Navarrese, Breton and Swiss army defat the English again in Bourgogne.

July 2, 1493

Manhattan has doubled in size as our new colonists land there. Soon it will become a rightful part of our glorious Vinland. We find that much money can be made there in the fur trade.

July 13, 1493

We hear that France has defeated an English army in Savoie.

July 14, 1493

We send an army (5000/2000/0) to join Ottar Gramse in further expeditions to the south. Ottar's troops head to rendevous with the Nova Scotia Regiment in Penboscot, just outside our borders.

August 4, 1493

France won a battle agaisnt England in Maine.

August 18, 1493

England wins a naval engagement against France in Donegal Bay. We wonder when this tete-a-tete will end.

August 20, 1493

Gramse is ambushed by Skraelings in Penboscot, and loses 400 men from his 1000. Beaten, they are forced to retreat to Bangor.

September 1, 1493

We dispatch yet another band of hardy pioneers to Manhattan at a cost of 58 ducats. I begin to toy with the idea of a colonization tax, but I realize that it will be too much of a hassle.

September 18, 1493

From our informant in France, we learn that Navarra has defeated the English in Gascogne, but the English beat the French in another naval battle in the irish Sea.

September 19, 1493

The Turks go to war with the heathen Mamluks. As their allies, Sweden the Netherlands and Vinland (that's us all right) join them in war against England and the heathen Mamluks. Finland dropps out of our alliance.

September 23, 1493

We recieve word that the French have finally siezed the English channel port of Calais.

October 1, 1493

Travellers from distant lands show us the maps of a distant place known as Egypt. This "Egypt" seems to the be the capitol of the Mameluk nation, with whome we are at war.

October 12, 1493

Our massive (5600/2000/0) army under Ottar Gramse crushes 1000 naitves in Penboscot, avenging the deaths of 400 Vinlanders who died there two months beforehand.

November 1, 1493

Another messenger informs us that our colonists have arrived safe and sound in Manhattan. 300 brave souls now live there. At the same time, Ottar is ambushed by Skraelings in Sebago, but we rout them quickly using superior Vinlander calvary.

November 2, 1493

Finland has rejoined our glorious alliance. The nation of Thuringen has algined itself with Bavaria.

November 7, 1493

We have learned that the Russians have siezed the city of Kazan from the Kazan.

November 8, 1493

The Papal States lost a battle against Naples in Romagna. While we feel that some revenge has been done for the Treaty of Tordesillas, we also realized that as a vassal of Spain, a stronger Naples is not good for us.

Novwember 15, 1493

The naval war in the English Channel swings in th favor of the French, as they win this engagement in the Irish Sea.

November 25, 1493

The Mameluks have defeated the Turks in some foreign land called Aleppo.

November 28, 1493

Ottar's troops dispatch another band of Skraelings to the afterlife in Connecticut, just north of our Manhattan settlement.

December 2, 1493

The French have once again beaten the English in the Irish Sea. When will they actually strike forth and win glorious victories?

December 6, 1493

The English fleet has defated its Navarrese counterpart off the Coast of Brittany.

December 17, 1493

We once again hear the story of a Turkish army being defeated by a Mameluk one in Aleppo. Meanwhile we grumble about the dimunitive size of this year's chickens. Who can have a feast with a pile of bones?

December 27, 1493

The nation of "Kazan" has apparently beaten Ryazan in the province of Lipetsk. The Turks finally turn the tide and beat a Memeluk fleet in the Cretan Sea.

Player Comments: First of all, I was scared to realize that trading cannot be used effectively, as you're country's CoT is Venice, and you can't see Venice. I suggest that there be a CoT in Nova Scotia or somewhere else in Vinland just to help out the Vinlanders. Your country is very weak economically, and without trade income, you're reduced to loaning money, and losing some every month, going bankrupt repeatedly until you conquer the Aztecs. That's where I'm going, because of the money woes.... If I can get my conquistador through....

An AAR close to home! You'll probably have to forgo the trade routes for the time being until something closer opens up.
If that conquistador gets down near Mississauga send him over for a beer ;)
Good luck with this!

In my game with IGC 2.1 I "went for broke" and took out 1 loan to go after the Aztecs. I didn't put any money into trade or colonizing (with the exception of one colonist to Isle Royale) until after I had the two Aztec gold mines. With the 2.2 Vinland I don't know how advisable that approcah is. This time around the crash bugs have ticked me off and I will finish! With the capital being located on Nova Scotia it seems to me that raising a mainland army is quite a bit harder. I'm looking forward to playing the 2.2 version of Vinalnd though. It's definitely a much more "historical" fantasy option. :puzzled: I also wonder if Ottar Gramse has been toned down...

On second thought, that's what I should have done. Vinland's a poor country in 2.2, they have a handful of provicnes taht give them only about 2 ducats a year in census taxes..... and they're further north too.... i just hope that I can get to the Aztecs before the Spainards... On the colonial front, I think I may go for the tobacco and sugar provinces with high base tax values. Heck, once I build up Manhattan, it'll produce 1/3 of my new annual income. :D

Gramse is 4/4/4 IIRC, but he still can't win very often in battle.... (I was fighting natives, I had 1000, they 900, and I lost almost half my force, it was close to 500 men)...

A conquistador who outnumbers natives and loses half his force? I think it's safe to say he has been toned down, pretty dramatically. I'll have to compare the old and new Ottars after I download 2.2. Of course I also sent him out with 2k cav rather than 1k infantry for his initial exploratory romp. That might have made a difference too. Of course by the time I was ready to send him south he had close to 20k inf and cav combined.

As for the economics Vinland (in both 2.1 and 2.2) is definitely a minor, but a minor with the advantage of being able to take the Aztecs quickly and thereby become a second rank major within five or ten years.

I hope that I can make it down there in time. Because I need to explore everything from Powhattan to Zacatras, and it is a long way. I plan to take one or two Aztec provinces with a small force, then build a fort, and annex in the second war (hopefully by 1515). However, at the rate it takes me to play this, I'll be lucky to get to that before my summer vaction. It took me 2 hours to play, record and write up what I have so far. Considering that I only have maybe an hour (at most) on Wednesday and Friday, the next update will be most likely Saturday. Right now, it seems that I'll do it like Oranje's AAR, one or two years at a time....

No worries. I often go several days between installments too. I generally wait until I have some in game action other than sending merchants, arranging RMs and such. Given my usually cautious playing style that often translates into a delay of a few days. I can also relate to the limited time problem.

Iirc you can reach Tampico in two years. The Spanish frequently don't take the Aztecs out until the 1510s or even later.

The good news was that I had it played on Wednesday. The bad news was that my internet connection was down until today.... And its 1496 and I've reached Rio Grande..... I'll type it up sometime today..... Hope to grab one or two povinces from the Aztecs, wall it, and then annex their whole country in the next war, while Ottar scouts south and looks for the Incas..... And go Protestant to protect myself from ToT.
