Prologue
“The Second World War arose from the hostility of the capitalist states towards Germany and its rightful claims for the Lebensraum”. For decades, historians have followed this statement to the letter, taking any responsibility for the war from the Nazi leadership and transferring it to the Allied Camp. It was impossible for those times to deny the official truth, but we should point out that not a single document or piece of proof, that could incriminate Hitler and his henchmen, existed in the state records. However, in the 70s, a period which marked the beginning of a global process of denazification throughout the Empire, saw some courageous attempts to discuss the WWII dogma. Andreas Urtdecker, for example, confirmed that the August 30, 1939 polish border conflict was merely a staged representation, in order to offer some legal grounds for the invasion. Even the long-famed Munich Conference, one of the most celebrated events in Hitler’s career, was rapidly becoming, in the researcher’s eyes, just another test ground for Hitler’s increased ambitions and desire to wage a war against the Russian bear. But, again, the official dogma did not change: Germany wanted a small-scale war; the Allies turned it into a world-shattering experience.
But history took its revenge. And by a strange quirk of faith the truth was finally revealed, not on a French or Russian battlefield, not in the records of the NSDAP, but in a small house located in the town of Bacau, Romania. After the death of its owner, Alexandru Hermann, in 1981, his grand-son discovered in the basement dozens of boxes, sorted by year from 1916 to 1951. All contained unknown documents about the period of the war, but strangely enough, mostly unavailable to any high-ranking Nazi except Hitler. The quiet man that had lived in this house for 30 years had been, before that, the mastermind of the Empire, with Hitler being no more than his personal puppet.
The real story began in 1916, on the western front, when a young Austrian recruit, named Adolf Hitler, met an obscure fellow soldier from the East, who had left the Austrian province of Bukovina and enlisted in a volunteer German army. The two became very close and apparently, Hitler charmed Hermann into a dual political partnership. This may have been the case from Hitler’s point of view, but the papers suggest something else, about a greater conspiracy within the conspiracy. Alexandru Hermann (b. 1891) had certainly his own political agenda, closely linked to the anarchist European movement, of which he was an active supporter. In the trenches, he had developed an interesting theory about the probability of an anarchist victory, called “the authoritarian messiah”. He argued that anarchy will eventually win if the dictatorship of the state will succeed in suppressing liberty, thus making possible a natural desire for liberty, rather than the ominous passions of the ignorant masses. Any compromise (like the modern democracy) is dangerous because it keeps the dominance of the state intact for only some minor benefits. Hermann disputed the fact that there is no need for individuals to achieve a state of complete anarchy; there was need of a single person, who would have to accomplish two apparently irreconcilable goals: be an anarchist and create the ultimate dictatorship; an unknown martyr that would accept eternal damnation for the achievement of true anarchy, a modern Judas who would bring the political Christ to all people.
It seems very likely that Hermann accepted Adolf Hitler as the “messiah” of his dream, vowing to act as his shadow, in order to lead his new creation on the rightful path. We know very little about his pre-1936 period, but we can safely assume that he lurked in the background, pulling strings, never revealing himself, just his acts. He remained unknown to most people of his time, but us, the ones that live in a world shaped by his theories, now know him well and can say without any hesitation: “Alexandru Hermann gave birth to the Second World War”.
