I had just my problems with this game. Seeing others making even speedruns through that game the time I constantly died was just frustrating. But this game is so addicting one can't just stop trying (a lethal combination).
I have kind of an analytical mind and so I tried to find out why this game is so hard for one and so easy for others. Don't take this wrong, I just wanna try to help you to make this game better.

The main Problem is kinda like this:

(I'm not playing eve because after the curve it gets boring)

There is no proper time to adapt to the spells, no time to get used to the elements. You're given everyting you'll ever get and thrown right into the battle.

Some examples:

You get Haste right at the beginning but you are rarely ought to use it. If you play for the first (most important) time then you want to see and explore the game and the story (i.e. find dead animals) and so you forget you even have it.

Chapter 6 is how it absolutly NOT should be.
On the way to the boss you are just popping everything with your Arcane-[insert random element]-beam and it works. You need no Magicks, no Nullify, no special attacks on this way. And then comes the mind-battle, you are just dying 2 times from the sheer raise of challenge before you can even figure out a way not to be thrown off the rocks, not to mention defeating your foes.
Some Push-Heavy-Stones-Down-The-Cliff Puzzles would do the trick to get the "Wait, Thats it!"-effect at the mind-battle.

Mentioning that brings me to the point:
This game needs more puzzles!

Adapt the player to the elements and the challenge! Tell him he might need to make use of specific tactics on the way to bigger battles.

Take for example Chapter five:
By beeing pushed down to the dig I remembered that I have Haste, taking that made Khan much easyer to defend since he could not grab and instagib me.

This is how the whole game should be!
This is how a game gets rewarding to the player!
(Portal anyone?)

And to all thoose who are through the game at this time: Feel yourself comfortable at the top of the learning-cliff, I just try to build a way for the others who paid for this game but have no climbing equipment.

You do make some good points, the games pacing is a bit off, chapter 5 boss killed me a couple times before I just decided to take my time and run away from him for like 15 minutes. But chapter 6 boss is like whoa, where did that come from? I think I nearly gave up on the game when I realized the first part on the floating islands was just phase 1. A few more challenges early on certainly wouldn't hurt, to get your ready for that.

I'm right now at the peak of frustration, can't sleep cause of this sh*t.
I was just trying to calm myself by writing this and using the speedrun thing as metapher and an hour later someone posts it!
I so gonna hate this game...

Guys, seriously, you will literaly kill people with this game!

I must say, after several hours of adventure mode (being killed over and over) and many challenge games (some solo, some online) I finally got the hang of it. Necessary spells like Teleport and Steambeam (just in case other things don't work out the way they should) are things I know by heart now and can cast in the blink of an eye.

This took me to chapter (whatever, don't know the number, the dwarven thing).

But complaining about Boss-fights you get thrown into without knowing what exactly to do...

(mark to read, SPOILER!) The fight against Death took us (some guy online and me) about 20 minutes because we were killed over and over again without knowing what we could throw at Death to make his HP go down (now that I have seen that spammign heal AoE wins the whole fight, I feel a bit retarded...) =)

Think of this game as similar to monster hunter. The only real growth takes place in your skill and knowledge. Sure, you start out a really really shitty wizard. And eventually you graduate to other levels. I tell you knowing summon elemental by heart and being able to execute it once every second in arena can be fun. Knowledge of your elements, spells, enemie's weaknesses and muscle memory are all important parts of this game. Just like monster hunter. (minus the equip crap)
So of course, just like anything else it takes time to get used to it. Some more than others.

one thing that drives me insane that is easily avoided is being knocked down every second for god sake just take off the shield :p but this game is very easy once you get the hang of it, if you keep failing doing the same skill combo's then try another skill, and also don't try to attack so much and kite around for a little while think of all your options is really simple just got to figure out the best way of doing things.

This game is surprisingly easy, the first time I had any troubles was when I encountered Death until I stopped to think that life magic is the obvious solution. Then the yetis after him made me think the difficulty had finally gone up...which it did a little but was still fairly easy. The only other thing after that which was a challenge was Grimnir with the 2 ghosts...and I beat him by summoning death to 1 hit kill him.

Gamers just aren't used to having to think anymore which is why it may seem hard for some and easy for others. If you think strategically and try different options, experiment a little you'll be ok. If you just try to run in like any other game you'll die.

Wow is also just about aimed at kids with its learning curve and difficulty...played that game and quit it a fair few times because it's so easy it's boring. Magicka was fun until I beat it twice, now it's only interesting in multiplayer.

Eve also wasn't that hard, you just need to do some outisde research using google rather than trying to figure everything out the hard way. Eve also gets very boring once you know what you're doing because the gameplay in general is so slow

But anyways Magicka was fun, a little challenging in some spots but not hard. New players just need to stop and think instead of beating their head against a wall trying the same thing over and over. What makes magicka so good is that you can beat things in so many different ways with a lot of different combinations.
