I for one don't really see a problem with a slowing of the book, granted I enjoy the fast 'who can post first' parts, but I haven't exactly been a shining example of sticking to it during the latter half or so of this book.

For that, I'll only apologize so much. I'm still in the process of trying to figure out my vertigo, and that to a certain extent does limit what I can do. I think we all came into this book expecting we could write the whole damn thing as fast as we wrote the later portions of book IV, which as a vet from the beginning, was just about light speed.

We did have that speed for the first few parts, but life intervened, as it always does. I don't think a synopsis is the right answer LD, I still burn a bit that we had to end book III like that.

I am doing my best to get back into the swing of it, and as such Ill make a request. Stop writing closed posts. This whole project is collaberative and interactive, we need to bring that back into it or the whole thing has changed its shape. I know that our numbers are down, but were not out of it yet.

RJ

Edit: One of these days, I think that Lochlan deserves to have it out with Ishak Pasha. :)

So, what I am hearing is that we have a substantial number of people still interested, but we should slow the pace down for the balance of the summer.

Phalanx: We are actually in Part Two of a three part story. However, the third part was supposed to be driven by MrT. Sadly, MrT has dropped off the face of the earth. He hasn't answered my e-mails or returned my phone calls. I can only assume he's pulled a Driftwood. If there's a Book VI it will incorporate Part Three. I'll just have to revisit the notes and flesh out the storyline.

Barkdreg: Nice to see you poking your head around. The synopsis by fusag and T_H is spot on. Excellent work, guys.

Shawng: We'll have to talk about the Cat's role. I guess I'll have to step into Foscari's shoes. We can talk this weekend.

fusag: I'll see what I can do about the rules of Tonk. ;)

RJ: I know some of my posts have left no direct hooks, but frankly I just wanted to keep the plot moving. I know you are not 100% at the moment, so I didn't want to leave something that would dangle... (gee, that sounds dirty...)

There was a comment about Cosimo marching north. At the moment he doesn't know that the combined Milanese army is marching toward Cremona, or that Gatamelatta is gathering near the Mantuan border. His actions are those of a person bent on punishment, hence the bit I wrote about his advisors thinking this was a bad move. However, he'll be informed shortly of the real situation, so he'll have some heavy thinking to do.

RJ, can we expect Erik and/or LLE back anytime soon?

Okay, that monster may be my last book post for a long while. Sorry I couldn't leave any FC character hooks (except Captain's). Anyway, it'll give something for the Cat and Loguidice to chew on. The one thing that bothers me is if I got the timing down. LD posted that the Cat was 2 hours away, but Landen had to get from northwest of the Asola to Foppy's/Robert's group southeast of the town, crossing the road from the east the Cat is using, all while not being seen.

I'll still be in town another week. I just don't know when, if ever, I'll be able to poke my head in. Consider my characters up for grabs. The state of things:

1) Kampfgruppe Landen has met up with Foppy, and (for most part) all the scouts are together. A couple Mongol signallers and Pierce's volunteers are floating around, but you can assume they rejoined the scouts okay that night. They are currently holed up some place out of sight from Asola, but within range to carry out missions.

2) Loguidice should be really annoyed right now. 1 patrol, 1 search party, and 1 foraging party have disappeared due to forces unknown. Giardino's patrol in force completely failed to catch them, though (as Giardino will plead) he interrupted their signal and forced them to flee. Inference: the enemy is small and only engages when it is in their interest.

Also, while the watches were distracted by the fake dust cloud to the north, the scouts launched fire arrows into their camp. I would imagine that any supply depot would be kept in a warehouse inside the town and hense safe. The only damage caused by this fire would be disrupting the operations of Loguidice's force.

3) The Cat should have been able to see: a) the first Mongol smoke signal (first signal was in the morning, warning Captain of the Cat's arrival; the second was in the early afternoon, far from prying eyes of the Venetians, was the estimate of Loguidice's strength), b) the dust cloud to the north (Possibly thinking the Milanese alliance would come from that direction? Brescia is in that general direction with a road from Milan via Bergamo.), and c) the fire of the Asola camp. He may also be confused about what is going on.

4) Captain knows that a large Venetian force controls Asola, but I purposely had the scouts underestimate Loguidice's strength. He also knows the Cat is near, much closer to Asola then he is. Since the scouts have maintained their operational effectiveness, they can still act as his eyes and ears.

Good luck, gentlemen. I promise I will be back. :)

what is wrong with you lot? You all seem to complain about this book being not that good and people dropping out and even maybe stopping.

Why? What I have seen the last few days is:
-nice writing
-a good story
-good characters

Maybe this book isn't evolving as fast as the latest book, but who cares. You're not under any kind of presure, this is just for fun.
As long as everybody is still enjoying himself the Free Company is alive.

Now I'm off creating a new character....

Sorry for editing part of the post Barkdreg, but that link is old history and had to do with an idiot member who is no longer around - just around long enough to really P.O. me

So long fusag, hope things move swiftly.

Barkdreg, on the surface you are quite correct. But, the politics behind the creation of this particular Book goes much deeper. Let's just say it's been rather... annoying. Anyway, don't forget, I've been doing this for two years now without a break. That should count for something... ;)

yeah, maybe a break would be in order. Don't forget it's all about fun. Once it becomes a chore you better stop or you end up like Uglyduck. Wouldn't want another mod to drop out.

Preach on brother Barkdreg, preach on. It is all about the fun.

Edit: Besides, this book has been great! I got to write an actual love scene where Lochlan didn't have to pop anyone's arms back into their sockets. :D

I found the Free Company threads on the second page, and decided that that just wouldn't cut it. So that should liven things up a bit. ;)

In the interests of LD's sanity, I would suggest we keep the brawl (relatively) good-natured, to prevent the sorts of incidents where people draw swords and break Lochlan's arm. ;) That said, feel free to beat the crap out of any of my grunts. ;)

Well, that's all I had in mind for the immediate future, so you can shut us down if you want, RJ -- sorry it took so long. Still, anyone who wants to probably has a few hours to join in the fun. Personally, I think it's a nice change of pace to have a fight scene where the goal is not to kill everyone you encounter. ;)
