Adding a horse to that might speed it up by a couple days but he'd arrive at the city sans rider since I doubt that even Kruschovic Bey is so lame-brained as to let a messenger ride through his lines...

So, your saying a horse might be faster than ships? I'll get Pietro right on that then. :D

I was just wondering which would be faster and how much time I have to play with. Obviously, the messenger would not try and get through the siege lines of the Turks. But if I know the temporal distance to Thrace, then it gives me an idea on other time scales I should pay attention to. (Since I am not the sole author on this project, I cannot warp time and space at my will)

Besides, who said the messenger would be making contact with the city or its defenders? The Doge just wants news about whether or not the siege has begun... ;)

SM, my estimate if it is a dedicated messenger, around two weeks, especially know, since he would have to break the blockade. That also goes for getting Veince to know that the siege has been completed, unless somebody in Thrace, on the outside of the Turkish army, has seen the bey approach.

You know I've suddenly got the Crack Suicide Squad from Life of Brian coming to mind. Maybe when Ishak gets there he'll discover that the Bey has ordered something similar. :D

SM: 2 weeks would seem about right for someone absolutely desperate to get there (or back) and under the right weather conditions.

I think it's also fairly safe to assume that regular messages coming from spies would have estimated both the Bey's and Ishak's arrival as being somewhere around the latter half of January so I would suggest that the Doge would be opperating under the assumption that Constantinople will almost certainly be invested by the end of the month.

driftwood...just re-read LeClerc's post...

200,000 Turks? LOL! And he left this juicy bit of mis-information for some poor slob to find and start spreading false rumours... :D I hope someone takes you up on that. :)

Secret Master, all hail. My rule of thumb has always been one week per province for a fast messenger - so a trip to Thrace would take about 6 weeks by horse. I would suggest about a 3-4 weeks by boat, depending on the winds, of course.

Now, if he was to operate from Corfu... :)

Either way, you have a few months to play with. I believe MrT has a copy of the time-line, since he's doing the Emperor John stuff.

If not, then I'll get a timetable off to you.

I do...but it's sadly a little out of date and I've been fighting to make time to get a "fixed" copy out along with the necessary info. I keep promising it and then failing to deliver. I'll take myself out back and shoot myself...

No problem. Just buy me a beer first, then I'll have Jerry bring up the gun. Eveyone knows we don't have them in Canada :)

Stroph, your post was great. It's POVs from 'everyman' that gives the story its flavour.

BTW, T, thanks for speaking for Captain. Based on his experience, he wouldn't have fallen for the ruse for a moment. In fact, he would have encouraged it, since it would have been suicide. Besides, the Bey wouldn't have marched with ladders, he would have to build them first - more economical that way :)

I think they would use unoared skiffs as fast messenger ships. The big problem would be eluding the enemy, and uncooperative winds. That's why I factored in the extra week.

...yeah, until the main force gets there with the griffins LeClerc mentioned which, of course, will fly over the walls. :D

As you've probably gathered, I'm not exactly creative these days.

And I don't think I'll become overly creative in a moment or two.

Sometimes real life strikes you. And I can't handle both writing and the s*** that happens.

That's just the way it is.

For now, I retire.

Use Alv where you see fit.

Sorry, folks! :(

I see, I just had a mental image of the adiratic as the venetians pond (or back yard:) ) making it possible to have fat ships going up and down the dalmatian coast

If I remember my research for Doge Bembo's reign correctly, he had an issue with Croatian pirates who had been driven to the coast by the Turk. So I don't think the area was entirely safe. Of course, that was nearly two centuries after the current time period, and the Turk had rolled over Hungary by that time. Point is, Venice doesn't necessarily have total control over 'her' land on the east side of the Adriatic.

Right. And it's just not the Adriatic, but the Ionian Sea, then the Dardanelles, which would be closely watched by the Turk, and finally the run through the Sea of Marmara, which from what I've read is very treacherous, especially during the winter months.

How's that for a run-on sentence :)

Norg, I sent you an e-mail.

You're welcome, give me an hour or so and I just might have the stage for that confrontation.

I've been holding off on responding to the hook you left me in your last post. Curious to see what you have in mind.

Norg, hate to see you take a leave of absence. Please check in whenever you can.:(

LD,

Since we are losing Alv for an unknown amount of time, I would like to propose we reorg his command. I know from an earlier version of the FC, that it is very stiffling to write much when your commander is AWOL. I can't justify Tomas interacting in battle with any of the other sargs or worse any of the higher ups. I can only do so many of the solo write ups!

:D
