One small quibble with your otherwise excellent post, RJ. You refered to Gao, the man who serves as Shur'tu's bodyguard, as a "rather fearsome one". He's actually a small, slender, quiet man. The fact that he doesn't give the appearence of a bodyguard is what makes him so effective. He's quite deadly in a number of forms of combat, but most folks would never know by looking at him. Lochlan being an experienced scout might see through that facade, but Zhang Gao would never be described as fearsome.

Still, great post. I could feel the tension rising in the room as I read it.

I agree, in a roundabout way that is exactly what all that soul searching has been about for Frederik, he isn't used to inactivity and sieges :) I hope it is coming out that way and not just as noice?? Eventually he'll come around and get back to his noncaring attitude :D

I think we need an event of some kind to hammer people together, get them to think less in terms of their own suvival and well being and more in terms of the Company, I've got a few ideas I'll try out, the first one today if time permits (I am at work after all :) )

Sometimes a throw-away comment will be picked up on by someone else. Rath Jones is a master at name-tossing. He doesn't neccessarily socialize with everyone he names, but he may at least walk past the character and wave, or whatever.

Once again I have to agree and give my compliments to the chef, oh I mean the ranger :D RJ, you have been exceedingly quick not only to drop a few names but also to pick up on situations and to ad a short post that elaborates on somebody else's hook.

Let's not forget the juicy hook I left Craig for his Russian Bey character to rub sand in Pasha's face :)

Anyway, my post is up. It's an unofficial end to the chapter, but I think I'll do away with the chapter breaks, it's just too much of a hassle trying to co-ordinate opening posts to launch new chapters.

I'll continue to let people know when I'm ready to move the plot ahead by several days, though.

No. I said I'll let you know when I'm ready. :) For now I'd rather see what kind of reaction the Ottoman army gathers.

And remember, this is only the Russian Bey's men, so there's no cannon, and only about 10 - 15,000 soldiers.

BTW, welcome back MrT. Don't you respond to your e-mails, or check your phone for messages anymore? ;)

Craig....hate to say it but...

Just want to make sure you're aware with your latest post that...

1. You would never just roll up to a city like this and throw men at it unless you intended them to die instantly. The city walls have a 30'-deep "moat" in front of them and archers would destroy them before they set a hand on the stone.

2. You never just "launch an attack" immediately. Traditionally the occupants are given a chance by the enemy commander to surrender the city first.

3. You have not established any defensive position in case the defenders launch a counter-attack and you don't outnumber them by that much so they would almost certainly defeat you if you devote any sizable number of men to die at the walls (if they could even get there).

4. Ishak Pasha would have justifiable cause to kill you for any one of the above unless you have direct orders from the Khan to initiate an assault. Given the embarasment he's suffered already, he would almost certainly take the opportunity to do so.

I would suggest that merely being there is honour and glory enough...

There's no reason the Turks can't form up and wander along the moat, checking things out, testing the arrow range from the walls ... to Lochlan, Roos, et al. it could very well look like the beginnings of an attack.

Aaaaaagh! MrT, you saw through my ploy before I even finished writing it. Talk about ESP.:D Nice job FCers, but the Bey has a few more tricks up his sleeve. Muhahahahahahaha!!!!!!!

BTW, LD thanks for that juicy hook. How does that sand taste, Pasha?:D

V: Thanks for the compliments on the Lochlan-Shur'tu confrontation. Hopefully, that's just round one.

You're welcome, give me an hour or so and I just might have the stage for that confrontation.

Note the rest if, my next post seem inconvenient for some reason due to some unseen plot or planning regarding the siege, PLEASE don't hesitate to tell me and edit/remove it, it was something I planned yesterday before LD brought up the Turks :)

Hey FCers, I got a question for ya.

Since there is no such thing as CNN during this time (barring Sytass, but that's another story!), obviously news travels slowly. Since it looks like the Turks have just about initiated the siege of the city, I was wondering how long it would take that information to reach Venice. The Doge has sent Pietro to hasten information, but what is considered a reasonable time delay in news from Thrace to Venice? Two weeks? A month?

And perhaps just as important, how quickly can the Doge expect a messenger to travel to from Venice to Thrace, assuming a ship and fast horse was put at the individual's disposal?

LOL! Thought you'd go that route...trouble is now it's looking like we've got ESP for seeing through your transparent plans so easily...typical Russian. :D

Wait until tomorrow morning and you'll be tasting sand yourself if you're not careful. Of course now that you've earned so much glory, perhaps I'll cut that poor messenger of yours some slack and let you lead the first assault against the walls. :)

Fast boats might make the trip in something like 2-3 weeks depending on weather. Standard merchant ships and galleys/warships would take more on the order of a couple of months.

Edit: Adding a horse to that might speed it up by a couple days but he'd arrive at the city sans rider since I doubt that even Kruschovic Bey is so lame-brained as to let a messenger ride through his lines...

can't tell with these russians can you ;):D.

And whats this about ESP , even I could see through your transparent motivations, and thats saying something ;).

RJ

edit: I agree with MrT's estimate, though it wouldn't be impossible to sneak through the lines, then procure a horse somewhere.
