Keep in mind that's in addition to about 2700 posts in the previous three Books. I'm kind of eyeballing it, but I figure we've got at least a million words of story written by, for, and about the Free Company at this point -- conservatively, I would say it's roughly the equivalent, depending on your formatting, of six or seven 300-page novels, or two copies of The Brothers Karamazov, or ten doctoral theses at Oxford...

Why did I think it was a good idea to single-handedly edit all this stuff, again? ;)

Ok, you have me questioning my sanity LD. Where'd your tactical map go?? (Quiet J's....:p) I could swear the tactical map you had earlier showed the lines along the wall of Constantine, and it's been eating at me all afternoon. Enough so I hit the stacks for a couple texts on Constantinople/Istanbul before heading home.

I edited the entry to place farmlands and villages outside the wall of Theodosius I/II. This should correspond roughly with a period map from 1450ish that shows villages and farmlands outside the 4th military gate (center line at the joining of Jaeger and Lochlan) as well as heavily developed along the coastal plain of Keras west of the wall as well. With a closed city suffering the plague and under siege, those on the outside are trapped between the hordes and the walls. As for the rest, Landen's experience to date has been within the 'civilized' sieges of Western Europe. He's got a lot to learn. ;)

LLE,

We are at the walls, but the higher inner wall, the outer wall was the one breached. We stand behind the breach on the inner wall. Does that help?

Umm...a couple of things...

T_H: Why is it that the thread suddenly has the Blachernae barely defended/undefended? Is it because Roos is so short or something? I can assure you that his other 900 or so men, plus JM's guys, are probably of relatively normal stature and wouldn't be invisible. So what's the scoop?

LLE: I hate to say it but that last section has really gotta see some major reworking. We've had multiple skirmishes near the walls already - plus one full-scale assault - and there's been no mention of anyone between the Ottoman camp and the walls. If there used to be, they died or ran away in the first attack. There's no "secret way in" that Captain or the officers wouldn't already know about.

Both: If I'm missing something completely and there's a really important reason for either of these, please send me an e-mail to tell me, since that's my section of the wall and there are other plots afoot that this could conceivably affect. If you've already cleared it with LD then could you or he please clue me in via e-mail.

Thanks.

PS....

LD: just sent you an e-mail re finalising full plot line for Book V, etc. I forget to add that I'll sit down and write out the final synopsis and time line this evening, including overview of the main protagonists and extracuricular events we discussed, and will probably have it for you later tonight or in the AM. Any idea who/which "the as-yet-un-named brother" would be?

LLE, here is an artist's rendering that I've used earlier. On it you can see some farmhouses, and a subburb outside the Golden Gate. I can see where some of the confusion may have come from based on a map like that. But the Turks have been camped there for months, so all buildings would have been long destroyed. The gap between the Outer Wall and the Inner Wall (The Parateichion) is approximately 40' wide. Sorry for any confusion. :) BTW, the tactical map's at the top of the main thread page. I haven't touched it.

RJ, I rather liked LLE's description of Lochlan :D

Stingray, thanks for poking your head in. Yes, this is a massive undertaking. :)

MrT, I'll send you a PM to clue you in.

Lockhart,

You're too kind. Parts Five and Six should be along sometime this week.

Of course, my progress may drop off a tad once I get my hands on a copy of MOO3... ;)

I blush...

So, MrV, are you going to come clean with me here?

Is N’ohB’Dhey really Mel Lastman in disguise? :D :D

LOL! I wondered when you were gonna unleash your rapier wit. :D

And nope...I'm gonna leave you dangling for a bit longer. ;)

He's more of a big-L type...actually I kinda had Brian Tobin in mind to play him in the film version except that N’ohB’Dhey's not an admiral. :D

Note: if you say it just right it might remind you of a certain Toronto furniture vendor's commercials. Coincidence...? ;) :D

Yes! Mel Lastman! Before he was Mayor of TO and Mayor of North York he used to own BadBoys. He's the one who coined 'Nooooobody!' It's his son who uses it now. :)

Well, the superb writing of our fearless leader has inspired me. I guess I'll just have Lochlan respond as he would to Landen in this situation, sort of a vague pointing gesture at the space between the wall with a comment along the lines of "What people?" Probably get on it in about an hour or so.

LD: I gotta agree with MrT, that was a terrific post. Great reaction by Murad, that is exactly what I was hoping for.

MrT: Your N’ohB’Dhey post was also quite good. Strangely enough, that vision of a ramp of corpses was just what I pictured the Bey seeing. I just wasn't able to work it into the post.

LD: Just for clarification, Shur'tu and the Mongols are grouped somewhere in the center, right? I was thinking perhaps inbetween Lochlan and LeClerc's command? Or somewhere else?

Wow! Well there you go. I didn't know that Mel was the former owner (in fact, I hadn't realised that what's-his-name was his son - though they do look a lot alike...probably one of the many illegitimate ones. :D ). I'm probably too young to remember that anyway.
