Oct. 18, 1450-Forest outside Champ des Reves- Early Afternoon

Louis was walking-well, tracking-along. Trying to find some way to pass the time, yet not let his mind wander. He noticed that Tylo had come back. Louis knew some of the FC officers were sort of harsh. Oh, that is letting my mind wander,
Louis thought. No it isnt!, the other side of him thought. He decided to talk to Tylo. "Hey, you tracking?", Louis asked, in a very thick Toulouse accent. "Yes", Tylo said. "But, now, what is the prisoner?"-

It had taken some time but slowly, the storehouse was being cleared out of it's former items and soon, the FC supplies can be brought in. Milo almost allowed himself a smile, almost. He made another tick off his checklist and then grunted in dismay as he realised the amount the of work still left to be done.

Above his head came a sharp cracking sound followed by a shout of "Look out below!" from Gaston.

Milo looked up to see a piece of the roof coming loose. Company men were already scrambling ouf the way except Milo. He stood there as if transfixed and would have continued standing there had not Charles and Olav quickly shove him out of the way.

The shove brought Milo back his senses and he realised how close he came to his end. He glared up at what is now an open gap in the roof where the rather apologetic face of Gaston stared back at him.

"I thought I asked you to fixed the roof, not bring it down on me!" Milo snarled at Gaston. Gaston mumbled an apology and then disappeared from view.

Milo turned his attention to the fallen piece of roof with an offended look. This was going to waste more of his time and he had other pressing concerns to attend to.

He looked around and saw the trio of Charles, Olav and Dietrich standing nearby looking at the fallen roof as well.

Milo shouted at them, "What are you looking at? The roof is not going to move by itself. Start moving it out of the storehouse!"

The men approaching from the east turned out to be some of the Rangers back from patrol. They made a report to the Captain, but Gaston was too far away to hear what was said. He went back to working on the roof. No-one had come up to help him, though the German cavalryman, Wilhelm, had been up in the rafters earlier, helping remove the rotted shingles from underneath. Fortunately the work was not too difficult. The rotten patches had been cleared, and now it was just a matter of collecting the fresh shingles Gunther brought up the ladder (Gaston wondered vaguely if there was a stash somewhere, or if they were stripping one of the abandoned houses), hauling them up the roof to the holes, then tacking them down, using the same nails that had held their predecessors. Gaston slid into a rhythm, working quickly, comfortably and perhaps just a bit carelessly. He had mostly finished patching the second hole when he put his weight on a stringer as he reached down the roof to fit a shingle half-a-dozen rows down - and the weakened wood snapped clean through, dumping several square feet of freshly-repaired roof into the storehouse below.

Only a wild grab at the ridgepole with his other hand saved Gaston from following it down. He clung to the crest of the roof, listening to the yells and crashes as the shingles and broken timber came raining down among the men working in the storehouse. He hoped they'd known which way to jump.

When the shaking had subsided, he crawled to the edge of the gap and looked gingerly over it. The Company quartermaster glared back up at him from amid the wreckage. "I thought I asked you to fixed the roof, not bring it down on me!"

There didn't seem to be a good answer to that, and Gaston prudently removed his face from Milo's line of sight. At least no-one seemed to be hurt.

Gaston had problems of his own to deal with. Scrambling about on the roof was suddenly a lot less fun than it had been, and the new hole in the roof was more than he could fix with a hammer and a stack of shingles. It needed a real carpenter, and Gaston, for all his six days with the Free Company, had never been that. He wondered where Wilhelm had got to.

Captain stepped back and said, “Will someone get this fellow a change of clothes?”

The thunder of approaching hooves from the roadside interrupted any acknowledgments of the Captain's request. Looking up, Captain saw one of the light cavalrymen pull his horse to a sharp stop only a few feet away. The recruit, whose name escaped him at the moment, saluted sharply.

"Sir! Bogdan Viteazul sends his regards...ah, he was leading our patrol" the man says, by way of explanation as to why Captain should care. "I was sent to report that we've found a wagon we think may belong to the bandits, abandoned recently and in haste. Some of their loot was still present at the scene. I've been asked to request the rangers to investigate further...we believe we may be close to their camp, sir."

Olav was quite happy when he saw that the storehouse was almost empty and that most of the dust had been removed. At last it was possible to see the results of the men’s hard work during the afternoon. Olav could see that Milo was also getting satisfied with the work of the men, and that made Olav smile. It was always good to keep the quartermaster happy, because in the end of the day it was he who was responsible for supplies and by keeping Milo happy there was always the possibility that he would be willing to increase the men’s rations and supply them with even better weapons and other necessities.

Then suddenly a sound from above got Olav’s attention and stopped his mind wandering. As Olav looked up he could see something was falling from the roof and then he heard Gaston scream:

"Look out below!"

Seeing that Milo was just standing there Olav jumped forward quickly. He could also see Charles doing the same, and quickly the two men managed to shove Milo out of the way. As the bits from the roof clashed into the floor Olav could see Milo’s was getting angry. It seemed like Olav’s fear had become true and the roof had started to give in. As Olav heard Milo yell at Gaston he could see the Frenchman disappear from view. Olav was certain that Milo wouldn’t be angry for long, but at the moment he felt certain that Gaston had made the correct move when he moved away. Then Olav saw Milo turned around to face the men who were looking at the roof.

Milo shouted at them, "What are you looking at? The roof is not going to move by itself. Start moving it out of the storehouse!"

“At once sir...”

Quickly moving forward Olav started to remove the parts from the roof together with Dietrich and Charles. Although it wasn’t that much, the bits would have been more than enough to kill Milo had he been hit on the head. As the three men removed the parts Olav could see that other men from the infantry were moving supplies into the farmhouse. They had got some extra to clean up, but the work was going fine and Olav felt confident that the infantry would have the supplies under roof by nightfall and have the roof repaired as well. It was just a question of getting the supplies in and then more infantry would be available to help Gaston on the roof. Olav just hoped they would avoid any more dangerous situations before the roof had been repaired.

The two scouts had taken one step before a sharp crack came from the storehouse, followed by a loud clatter and a series of colourful curses.

Captain, Lochlan, Father Storphski and Joseph joined the scouts and Harvey in watching the resulting fallout from the disaster.

“Milo sure looks pissed,” Lochlan commented.

The thunder of approaching hooves from the roadside interrupted any acknowledgments by Captain. Looking up, he saw one of the light cavalrymen pull his horse to a sharp stop only a few feet away. The recruit, whose name escaped him at the moment, saluted sharply.

"Sir! Bogdan Viteazul sends his regards...ah, he was leading our patrol. I was sent to report that we've found a wagon we think may belong to the bandits, abandoned recently and in haste. Some of their loot was still present at the scene. I've been asked to request the rangers to investigate further...we believe we may be close to their camp, sir."

Captain cupped his chin and studied something on the ground. Finally he nodded and said to the recruit, “Give Lochlan directions to the wagon, then rejoin your unit and patrol the area.” He looked first at Lochlan, then at Harvey. “Harvey, my lad. You’re about to earn your keep.”

The man swallowed. “I am?”

“You are.” He nodded at the two scouts. “Clean him up and bring him right back.” The scouts dragged the small man off toward the camp. “Lochlan?”

“Captain?”

“Gather the balance of your men. Rendezvous at that wagon with the light cavalry. Use it as your forward base. If you locate the enemy before we arrive…”

“Do not engage,” the ranger finished before pulling the messenger aside for directions.

Captain faced the storehouse and the men milling around it. At the top of his lungs he yelled, “BAER!”

A burly head popped up form around the corner of a building and soon the massive sergeant was standing before John. “Captain?”

“Inform the men we march at daybreak.”

“Action, sir?”

“Soon enough.”

Baer grinned. “Yes sir.” He stormed off toward the storehouse.

Captain faced the Father and the Elder. “Joseph, we will leave a small guard here to look after our camp and your village.”

“As you wish.”

“Father?”

“Yes?”

“Bring several prayer books. You’ll be needing them.”

Rhys grumbled as the news of the morning's march swept the camp like a wildfire -- like any good Free Company rumor or news. He prodded the thin broth the archers were making for their supper, dropping in a sliced turnip as Taliesin handed it to him. "Perfectly good camp, Tally, we finally settle in, and we're up and off again."

"Aye, Rhys, but it could be worse," the philosophical Welshman said. "At least the infantry who spent so long scrounging for lodgings get to sleep in the field like the rest of us after all. There's some joy in that."

Rhys spat. "Bah! That was t'be the best part! Every infantryman ranges off to find a house with a spare loft, get cozy, and of course the good villager is only too happy to accommodate." He barked a laugh. "Can you imagine, the infantry all stacked like cordwood, falling out of every pantry and attic, and the good villager took the coin of every one? Magnificent!"

"You're a terror, Rhys," Tally said with a grin, tossing the elder man the last turnip, then setting to work on the carrots.

"It's always the same with the new recruits; shortcuts instead of a little good, honest work."

"Like you don't enjoy a warm bed, y'old bastard!"

The two Welsh chattered away, their stew eventually wafting over the surrounding camp.

Oct 20, 1450: The Abandoned Wagon – Morning

As per orders, the rangers rendezvoused with the light cavalry at the abandoned wagon and used that as their base of operations in anticipation of the infantry’s arrival.

During the time between the 18th and the 20th of October, patrols swept the immediate area searching for signs of the bandit camp, with little success.

On the morning of the 20th, an early patrol under the command of Mario Botacelli detected movement in the forests further east of their position. Investigation revealed the movement to be a large force of mercenaries heading straight for the wagon.

A runner was dispatched to the camp where he reported to Lochlan. Lochlan in turn gathered Nikolai, Lim Hui and Bogdan Viteazul. Given the urgency of the meeting, the balance of the command knew something was up, and casually began to arm themselves in anticipation of orders.

Lochlan knelt on the ground with the scout, while Nikolai, Lim Hui and Bogdan stood and watched. The scout was drawing in the coarse dirt. “They are coming along this road, sir. We counted maybe 300 infantry and perhaps 50 horse. They looked pretty beaten up.”

Bogdan flicked at a bug on his sleeve, feigning indifference. “What was the condition of the horse?”

The scout looked up. “I’ve seen better. I think these men haven’t eaten for a while.”

Nikolai grunted, “Good and bad. Morale will be low, but desperation will be high.”

Lochlan pursed his lips. “From further east, you said?”

The scout nodded.

“Every indication had our bandits trailing north.” He shook his head, his long grey hair swaying with the motion. “A problem for another time. First things first. Nikolai?”

“Sir?”

“Gather the balance of the rangers. Two wings. Keep north and south of the mercenaries. Stick to the forests. Pick off stragglers, set traps, ambush small units. Keep them on their toes and slow them down. We need time until the infantry arrives.”

Nikolai nodded. “50 men, two groups of 25. Mario has 5 with him, so I’ll send 20 his way. That should do it.” Without waiting for an OK, the elder Rus stormed off barking orders.”

Lochlan and the scout stood. “Lead your 20 back to Mario, give him his orders. Tell him nothing foolish, understand?”

The scout swallowed and ran to join his assembling brethren.

Bogdan asked, “What about us?”

Lim Hui said, “We have 75 well-trained light cavalry with bows. We will approach along the road. Once we make contact, we harry them back toward this position. Same method as the scouts. Attack isolated units, ambush the overanxious. Just don’t get trapped.”

Bogdan raised an eyebrow and smiled. “Me?”

Lochlan interrupted. “I need one of your boys to ride to Captain. Tell him the situation, and if he can light a fire under his men.”

Lim Hui barked an order, and a rider hastened west. He turned to Lochlan. “And what will you be doing?”

“I’ll be the garrison.”

Lim Hui regarded the abandoned cart. “A lot of fuss over a wagon.”

“Not so much the wagon, but what it held. Or what it is purported to have held. Word must have spread, whether purposely or not. There’s something fishy about this, but I can’t put my finger on it.” He paused as he watched the rangers melt into the forest, two wings flanking the main road. He wished he was with them, but his duties prevented that luxury. He cracked a half grin. “Well, let’s see what the new boys are made of.”

Lim Hui passed Bogdan a glance. “Indeed.”

Lochlan left the men to gather their cavalry. Soon they rode off, leaving the senior ranger as the lone occupant of this suddenly important abandoned wagon. Carefully he knelt beside its massive wood frame, removed his collection of knives, and began to prepare them.

Oct 20, 1450: Several Miles East of the Abandoned Wagon – Late Morning

The scout had little trouble finding Mario. All he had to do was listen for the thump-thump-thump of the marching mercenaries, their endless cursing, the clatter of weapons banging on armour and the snorts and whinnies from the forward cavalry screen.

The scout led the 20 reinforcements deep into the forest, away from the enemy, where he found Mario and his small command. Or, at least, Mario revealed himself to be found. Lochlan’s orders were passed along, and soon the rangers began to edge closer.

The enemy mercenaries were strung out in a long column, showing little discipline, though judging by the weapons and armour some of the soldiers carried certainly appeared to be no pushovers. Still, the rangers had surprise on their side, something that would be revealed shortly.

Lim Hui and Bogdan led the light cavalry along the road. Ahead of them two outriders carefully approached each twist and turn of the trail with anticipation. They needn’t have been so careful. The enemy cavalry was detected well in advance.

Lim Hui called a halt while Bogdan approached. The Moldavian grunted. “How do you want to handle this?”

“The road is narrow, the forests inaccessible. This will hurt them more than us. They have no archers, perhaps a few crossbows. I say we hit and run, draw them from the main body with our arrows. Properly executed, we could wear them down long before they reach the wagon.”

“And if they grow too bold?”

“Then it’s steel on steel.”

Bogdan grinned. “Let’s get to it.”

One of the outriders returned to the main body of the Light Cavalry. “Well?” Lim asked.

The outrider pointed down the road, “They are about ten minutes march away and should be able to spot us in about five minutes away.”

Lim rubbed his chin as he considered his next move. “This is as far as we shall advance then. We will wait for them here.” He said to the sergeants.

“What’s our first move?” The Irish sergeant O’Floinn asked.

“I plan to thin out their ranks little by little starting with their cavalry.

Lim then turned his gaze to Bogdan, “Bogdan, we are still out of their sight and they have no idea of our strength. Let’s take advantage of that. Take one arban with you down the road and give their cavalry a little warm welcome. See if you can bait some of their cavalrymen to come chasing after you. When they do, fall back to this position. The rest of us will wait here to pick them off.”

Take one arban with you down the road and give their cavalry a little warm welcome. See if you can bait some of their cavalrymen to come chasing after you. When they do, fall back to this position. The rest of us will wait here to pick them off.”

Bogdan gave a deep, theatrical bow in his saddle. "Certainly." Rising up, he grinned. "I hope there's a few left for you to kill by the time we get back." With that, he turned his horse and gave its sides a squeeze, waving one finger in a circular motion high in the air. His arban quickly came to his side, and in moments they were charging off down the road.

* * * * *

"Know what I could go for? Bangers. Bloody 'ell, I'd sell me own doublet for some bangers."

"Oh shut your damned mouth, Chaz. I swear, the longer we go without food, the more you just wanna talk about it."

"But it's all I want!" the first mercenary said, turning to his comrade, then facing back up to the sky. "And a pint. Oh, a pint...and maybe some fresh apples. I heard there were apples!" He was greeted only be a faint buzzing sound, like an angry bee, and then a gurgling noise. "Ha! I knew I'd get you all worked up for it! You're drooling now, ain'tcha!" The gurgling ceased, and the mercenary called Chaz turned in surprise and horror just in time to see his comrade slump from the saddle, an arrow in his throat.

"That's one" Mihai muttered, his bowstring still quivering. "Range is good."

"Fire!" snarled Bogdan, giving his horse a quick kick. Bow still sheathed, he trotted forward of the arban as eight arrows whistled past his ears and into the startled ranks of the mercenaries. Removing his helmet, he held it to his chest and bowed deep in his saddle. "Good morning!" he shouted. "You've all chosen a fine day to die!" With that, he pitched his helmet back onto his head, threw the enemy cavalry a very rude gesture indeed, and turned his horse about.

Meanwhile, the rest of the arban's shots landed amongst the mercenary cavalry screen, and the cries of struck man and horse began to emanate from the mob. However, angry shouts of retribution and barked orders drowned them out quickly, and a portion of the screen was suddenly in full charge towards the tiny band of men who had so impudently assaulted them.

"Time to go!" Bogdan barked, and the unit pivoted smartly. Bogdan pulled his bow as each man nocked a second arrow, and twisting backwards in their saddles, all let fly again. The elder Moldavian's shot hit a hapless fellow just below the shoulder, his compound bow punching through armor with power to spare. The man howled, nearly losing control of his horse as he threw his free hand over the wound.

Mihai's second shot struck a horse, which stumbled and fell face-first, a defeated whimper passing its lips as it threw its rider. The first man immediately behind the boy's victim alertly jumped the sprawling animal, but the next two were not so fast, or so lucky. Tons of horseflesh suddenly went airborne, spinning through the passing ranks of the mercenary cavalry, and tossing their former masters helplessly into the meat-grinder of thundering hooves.

Out of distance and out of time, the Free Company cavalrymen spurred their horses and bolted down the road towards the rest of the formation. Bogdan pulled alongside his attendant with a grin. "Now you're just showing off" he said, pulling another arrow of his own and firing behind him in full gallop.

"Of course" smiled Mihai, readying his third shot. "Now watch this..."

Captain faced the storehouse and the men milling around it. At the top of his lungs he yelled, “BAER!”

A burly head popped up form around the corner of a building and soon the massive sergeant was standing before John. “Captain?”

“Inform the men we march at daybreak.”

He reached the storehouse with his usual scowl back in place. Filling his lungs he let out a roar.

"ALL RIGHT YOU LAZY BUGGERS!" he bellowed, "PLAYTIME IS OVER! WE'RE GOING TO BE GOING INTO ACTION. DROP WHAT YER DOING AND DOUBLE TIME IT TO THE ROUNDEVOUS POINT. IF YOU DON'T KNOW THAT IS THE EMPTY SQUARE IN THE CAMP! MOVE IT, MOVE IT, MOVE IT!"

He repressed a grin of satisfaction as men scrambled out from the storehouse like ants from their hill. He stomped back to the camp, certain that the rest of the infantry would soon be apprised of the situation and all would be gathering.

By the time he arrive most of the infantry had indeed formed. Veterans and recruits alike had their pikes at the ready. He frowned when he realized that nobody had taken a halberd.

"First rank!" He shouted, "Return your pikes and arm yourselves with halberds!"

The men in that rank trotted off, soon to return with their new weapons. Ox, Olaf, and the others who had trained with them already were part of that front rank.

"Some of you are about to see your first action with the Free Company very soon," Baer reminded them, "But we still need some training. I need all of the infantry to be ready when we DO go into action!"

He paced in front of them slowly.

"Some of you will die when we go into battle," he continued, almost softly.

Soft enough that the men actually had to strain to hear him.

"The Company has a motto," he informed them, "Death Rides With Us!"

Veterans raised their voices in a rousing cheer.

"Death Rides With Us," Bear continued, "We neither embrace it, nor fear it! It is the constant companion of a mercenary's life. We acknowledge it and we vow to make sure that our enemies will look into our eyes and know we are not afraid!"

Gerd caught himself nodding in agreement. He'd heard similar speeches from Baer for years. Either him or Amric. Both had a way with words. He shook himself mentally and paid attention once more.

"But I'm not trying to scare you," Baer growled, "Remember your training and make sure it's the guy facing you that croaks, not you! Follow orders and make them die instead!"

The men cheered once more.

"Let's get training! Forward! March!" Baer snapped, "Out of the camp and Oskar, lead them to the forest!"

"Right, Sergeant!"

October 20, 1450: In the forest with the Infantry - Morning

Baer led the men deeper into the forest, following the path that could lead them to the bandits. The men marched three abreast. The mood of the men was somber. Since the sergeant's speech the other day he had trained them hard. There were now going to be two ranks of halberds instead of just one.

The men marched quietly, not even whispering to each other. Baer had made it clear that it was to be as silent a march as possible. Soon enough they would be meeting the enemy. He still had hopes that they could find a large enough clearing to marshal and prepare for a battle in relatively clear space.

He didn't count on it, but he could still hope. He frowned ferociously. The recruits training was nowhere near complete and he was certain he would lose more of them than he would if they had more training. But he'd done the best he could with the limited time he'd had.

"Oskar," Baer barked quietly.

"Sergeant?"

"You'll be taking the left."

"Sergeant."

"No questions?"

"No," Oskar shrugged, "It's going to get real ugly if we have to fight in the trees."

"We'll do what we must."

"Oh, agreed," Oskar nodded, "Just saying it will be ugly."

"You've mentioned that."

"Yes, sergeant."

Baer rolled his eyes, "Shut up, Oskar."

"Yes, Sergeant."

Oct 20, 1450: Several Miles East of the Abandoned Wagon – Late Morning

Mario had integrated his newly expanded force on the move. The bandits were marching. And bitching about being hungry. They were in formation, but it was a bit sloppy and they weren't paying that much attention to the woods on either side of them.

He used hand talk to tell his men to move closer to the rear of the enemy formation. The last men in the columns were trudging along behind the others seemingly without a care in the world.

Mario and another veteran glided out of the woods behind them and clamped their hands over the mouths of the victims, knives to their throats. Forcing them back into the trees each man was taken a couple of hundred feet into the woodlands before having their throats cut.

Two more men stepped up and repeated the performance. The third set of rangers stepped up only to be seen by a bandit further up the line who turned his head to shout something back to the stragglers. His shout of alarm made the two company men melt back into the forest.

Men turned and shouted in horror to find that four of their brethren had vanished into thin air. The witness exclaimed that two men had slipped intot he forest the moment he saw them. The columns started to grind to a halt when screams from further ahead.

The sound of hooves thundering away told the Rangers nearby that the light cavalry was up to their usual tricks. Hit and run. Melt away and then reform and hit the enemy again. A time honored tactic that had borne fruit on more than one occasion.

A rope snaked out from the trees and snared one man by the wrist, pulling him off balance and into the trees. Bandits started to swarm in that direction, only to find their companion dead and nobody seemingly in sight.

Men blundered into the trees shouting and cursing. Weapons were swung wildly about. One sprouted a knife in his throat. He fell, gurgling his last as he hit the ground. More men charged into the surrounding forest looking for their tormentors.

One ranger recruit, who had scrambled up a tree to escape the fury fell from the branches. His head hit a branch falling down. The sickening crack told of a broken neck as he landed on the ground in a boneless heap.

The rest of the team either faded further into the forest or allowed the bandits to pass them by. Mario nearly found himself trampled as he lay on the ground in a slight hollow covered in fallen autumn leaves. He sighed soundlessly in relief as the enemy passed him by, shouting and screaming curses as they scattered into the forest.

Shouts and bellows from leaders still on the trail had them blundering back through the forest in a truly foul mood. Only the one unfortunate recruit had been discovered and only by bad luck.

Mario waited until the bandits started to move forward after their cavalry before levering himself back to a standing position. He started to work on reforming his group.

Alejandro, unlike Mario and some other Rangers, chose to use his crossbow instead of the knife. After a few sneak attacks on the rear of the column the Rangers were spotted and the mercenaries started to rush into the forest aimlessly, knowing not where their enemy was. Alejandro shot his crossbow twice, taking a life each time.

However, after the second shot, his position upon a tree was clearly seen. He rushed down and hid between some bushes, as the mercenaries were looking for him above the tree. He had lost contact with the rest of the group ever since the mercenaries first rushed into the forest, so he started to look for any sign of his companions. Finally, the mercenaries retreated back to the road, probably following their leaders' orders.

Suddenly, Alejandro felt a hand over his shoulder. He instinctively drew his knife and turned to face his opponent, but realised it was Mario. "Let's gather the rest," he said "our job doesn't end here."

"Any losses?" was the Spaniard's reply.

"Just one, the poor fellow fell from a branch and broke his neck. Now let's move it, there's no time to lose".

October 20, 1450: On the march with the Infantry - Morning

Dappled rays of the sun filtered through the leaves of the trees into the forest casting a weak light to guide their way. Olaf noted the riot of color from the red, gold, yellow, orange, brown, and even some green leaves on the branches of the trees. Leaves were on the ground as well, but most were still attached to the branches above. Periodically one or two would start to flutter down gently.

The forest, other than the tramping of their own feet was deathly quiet. The normal chirping of birds was absent, as was the scolding of squirrels. To him it felt like the the wildlife and living trees were holding their collective breath as the company marched through as quietly as possible.

He remembered the sergeant's admonition about quiet. They had no idea just how close the enemy was, but sound had ways of carrying funny in a forest. Sometimes it would travel a long way, while at others it was swallowed up by the greenery. He'd finally gotten used to the halberd he held in his right fist thanks to the intense training of the past few days.

To say he was happy without his pike would be incorrect. He had fought and killed with it and to now be using a weapon similar and yet so different was a new experience for him. He glance to his right and saw Ox plodding alongside him. The other man had a slight smile on his face as he noticed Olaf looking at him. He nodded slightly and turned his head so that it was looking straight down the path.

The men were doing a fair job of keeping quiet. There was no way, of course, to mask the sound of a few hundred feet tramping along the forest path. But otherwise it was remarkably silent.

The sun's light did little to burn off the frost on the bushes and his breath could barely be seen in the chilly air. He breathed deeply and let out a soft breath of contentment. The company was marching off to battle and he was as ready as he could be. He didn't think it would be much of a battle since they would be fighting bandits, but then again they were reputed to have once been part of some army or another prior to turning to the outlaw life.

He'd wait and see what developed. He'd learned patience in the infantry. Unlike the cavalry and Rangers there was plenty of marching and waiting until the battle began. Then it would be close combat where you'd see the expression on the man's face you'd just killed. Usually a look of shock and surprise that would transform to horror and dismay as they realized their life's blood was spilling onto the ground before they would collapse on the ground already dead or dying.

He remembered the feel of bodies underfoot as he and his companions advanced over them into an enemy formation, taking care not to turn an ankle or be tripped by an arm or leg. Also being aware that blood made the ground underfoot soft and treacherous at times. All things he reviewed in his mind to remember when the battle did finally begin. He made note to keep an eye on Ox, who no doubt had no concept of such things. Yet.

He opened his mouth to burst into song and snapped it shut as the first words almost slipped out. Sergeant Baer would rip him a new arsehole if he did such a stupid thing. He gave himself a mental shake and paid closer attention to his marching....

Oct 20, 1450: Several Miles East of the Abandoned Wagon – Late Morning

Mario gathered his men once more and strung his short bow. This time he meant to have the men who had long range weapons use them to pick off the men at the rear of the enemy column.

He had Alejandro help him put the dead recruit back up into the tree he had fallen out of in a large crotch of branches so he wouldn't be ravaged by any of the forest's denizens. He regretted the loss of the one recruit who'd fallen out of the tree and made sure to note his exact position so that he could be found again.

Mario used hand talk to order the men to fire their weapons. Bowstrings thrummed quietly and men fell from the column screaming in pain. Two cast stones from slings dropped their men virtually silently as the targets were both hit in the head.

Bandits looked around wildly as they shouted in anger and fear. Another round of arrows and stones took out more men. The column halted again as a third round pelted into them. Orders were shouted and men started methodically moving their way into the forest in a tidal wave of fury.

Mario silently ordered his men to disengage. They slipped further from the enraged bandits. This time he didn't try to hide nearby. The angry men would take more care to check as much ground as they could. The fallen recruit also made it unlikely that any ranger would be able to hide in a tree.

Sure, it would be possible to do so. But Mario didn't want to risk it and further deplete his forces. He would already have to answer to Nikolai and Lochlan for the loss of the one man as it was. The safer bet was to flit away and let the bandits expend their fury on innocent foliage and then return once they returned to their march.

The rangers kept far enough ahead of the irked bandits to ensure their safety and watched them slash into bushes, stomp the ground and peer suspiciously up into trees. He was glad he had made his decision the way he had. The bandits weren't truly incompetent. The first time they had been caught completely by surprise. This time they had reacted more professionally.

He realized that a third strike would have to be far ranging as well. They would have some archers in the rear now to try and return fire. It would be blind, but there was always a chance that a ranger could be injured. It was a risk he and his men would take, but there were ways to lessen the risk to themselves.

He smiled slightly as the bandits continued to expend energy looking for them. His attack had managed to stop their advance cold. At least for now. He heard shouts from the other side of the trail. No doubt Nikolai and his men were dishing out death as well. He slithered through bushes as the bandits slowly advanced into the forest. One bandit dropped as a stone from a sling thumped into his temple. Another cried out as a stone cracked into his cheek, breaking some teeth inside. He leaned over and spit the broken teeth out along with blood.

An arrow here and there flickered in the dim light to impale itself into a body part of a bandit. Mario himself drew and loosed. His arrow plunged into the leg of a bandit who screamed in agony. The bandits who were injured began to limp or scurry out of the dense forest. Others came forward to replace them.

This would work just as well. Keep them strung out searching and pick more of them off until they learned it was a wasted effort to come after them. Then they would slink back into position and hit the bandits again.

Mario stood behind a tree, nocking another arrow. He stepped out briefly, sighted and loosed. He stepped back and moved, not even looking to see his arrow thunk into the shoulder of another bandit who spun and fell to the ground with a shout of pain.

His fingers flashed sign to the veterans nearby who passed it along to the others.

Move back more. Let them get further into the forest. We'll pick more off before letting up and allowing them to get back into formation.

October 20, 1450: On the march with the Infantry - Morning

The sick feeling at the base of his stomach has been building up for some time. Right now, it was only an uncomfortable feeling but Charles knew as time progressed, it will get worse until he will feel like he is unable to breathe. This was not the first time it had happened. It had happened twice before, each time before a battle.

The first time it has happened was half a year ago when he saw his first battle. Then it was against bandits as well. That time, by the time he got into the battle, the bandits were already in flight.

The second time was a few weeks later. Then Chinese assassins had tried to assassinate some of the Free Company officers at the Company’s stockade in Ancona. Charles was one of those who engaged the assassins inside the stockade. However that time, the men he faced were among some of the finest fighters in the world. The chaos of battle inside the stockade made Charles freeze in fear. He had no idea what to do and he would have died at the hands of the Chin assassins had Sergeant Baer not saved him then. Baer had never spoken of it again with Charles but Charles was still afraid. What if he froze again and that results in some of his comrades in arms being killed.

He glanced to his left where Olav marched beside him. Some of the fear in Charles must have showed in his expression for Olav gave Charles a reassuring smile and a friendly pat on the shoulder.

On Charles other side was Dietrich. He did not look at Charles but stared straight ahead at the person in front of him. Dietrich’s expression said nothing but Charles noticed that Dietrich was gripping his pike tightly though. Fear, nervousness or anticipation, Charles did not know.

Behind Charles, Gaston and the one eyed figure of Gunther marched together. The pair had always been seen together. Charles had not spoken much to them but he had heard that they had served together in previous campaigns. Having seen many battles before, Charles wanted to turn back and ask them if it ever gets any easier. However he knew if he did that, Baer will have his hide.

Deep in his thoughts, Charles did not see the stone in his path and he stepped right on it which cause him to stumble backwards and it could have been embarrassing had Gaston and Gunther quickly caught hold of him, allowing him to regain his balance. He muttered a quick word of thanks. Gaston nodded with a slight smile, took another look at Charles before replying “Easy there lad, you look nervous. Just remember your training and you will get through just fine.”

Charles nodded, unable to say anything. He turned his face back forward. The march continued…

Oct 20, 1450: Several Miles East of the Abandoned Wagon – Late Morning

Once Bogdan and his arban had left, Lim Hui and the rest of the Light Cavalry had gotten to work as they got into positions.

The position Lim Hui had selected was on a winding of the road. The winding was such that the enemy cavalry would not be able to see any enemies until it was too late. By then, they will be in point blank range of the Light Cavalry arrows.

The road however was narrow and the forest inaccessible. There was no space at all for Bogdan and his men to ride past the rest of the Light Cavalry. And as long as Bogdan and his men stayed between the enemy and the Light Cavalry, they would be unable to get a clear shot.

Lim Hui ordered 4 arbans of his men to dismount. These 40 men were his most experienced men in the Light Cavalry and he needed their experience and discipline if they were to pull it off.

The 40 men would spread out on the sides of the road and wait for Bogdan and his men to ride past. Once they did, the men would have to quickly close ranks and form two lines of archers to fire at the oncoming enemy cavalry.

They will have very little time to do it once Bodgan had rode through so they must get it right. Should things however get ugly, Lim already had his remaining 25 men on horseback ready to charge into the enemy.

In the distance ahead, Lim could make out the sound of horses riding fast towards their positions. He could not see them yet but they were closing fast. Archers had arrows on bow, ready to spring into position once their men had rode past. The sounds of horses grew louder..

Oct 20, 1450: Several Miles East of the Abandoned Wagon – Late Morning

Jan watched as Mihai fired the first arrow. His aim was good and a bandit slumped in his saddle.

“Fire!” Bogdan ordered and the rest of the arban fired their arrows into the enemy ranks. Even as the arrows left Jan’s bow, Bogdan had rode forward.

A few of the enemy cavalry fell but not many. Jan had the satisfaction of seeing his arrow take one of the bandits in his shoulder. The bandit fell off his horse, groaning in pain. The sudden attack had only served to infuriate them and a portion of the cavalry had broke away from the main pack to chase after the arban.

“Time to go!” Bogdan ordered and Jan quickly turned his horse around as the arban made their way back towards the rest of the Light Cavalry.

“Give them another volley!” Bodgan shouted. Pulling another arrow from his bow, Jan twisted his body and let off another arrow. Jan cursed as his arrow went wide of his intended target. However some of the arban’s other arrows hit and a couple more men crumpled onto the ground.

The arban rode hard fast towards the rest of the Light Cavalry. The winding of the road was just ahead. However the lighter horses of the Free Company were outrunning the bandits by a fair bit. Already some of the bandits were giving up and starting to turn back towards the main body.

Jan shouted to Bodgan, “Bodgan, we are outpacing them too quickly and some of the bandits have already given up trying to catch us. We must goad them further before they all give up. Then our ambush will be in vain.”

Oct 20, 1450: Several Miles East of the Abandoned Wagon – Late Morning

"Leave it to me!" Bogdan laughed, turning his horse about. "Everyone, draw steel!" The arban pulled up, pivoted again, and sheathed their bows, drawing swords instead. The elder Moldavian raised his yataghan, pointing it at the enemy formation, and suddenly howled "CHAAAAARRRRGE!" Planting both legs firmly in Costica's sides, he bolted forward, followed closely by his arban.

Those mercenaries who had lost their interest suddenly found it again, at the promise of an actual toe-to-toe fight. But their wish was to be denied. "On my order, bows" Bogdan snarled just over the pounding of hooves, and the word passed quickly amongst the horsemen.

At point blank range, bearing down on the enemy, Bogdan suddenly raised his sword and gave it a circular spin. "Turn about! Bows!" The unit turned to its left, and Mihai swung Dragomir around dramatically, slamming his sword back into its sheath and drawing his bow. Another rain of nine arrows fell among the mercenaries, and another cry of surprise and alarm came up.

But Bogdan did not turn, and Bogdan did not draw his bow. Picking out one horseman with a lance who had pulled out a little too far in front of his comrades, Viteazul swung his saber in an uppercut motion, popping the lance upright. Twirling the blade around in his hand to get it out of the way for a second strike, Bogdan brought the sword in just between the man's head and shoulders, the forward-curving blade encircling his throat in a lover's embrace and neatly cleaving the man apart at the neck.

"Run!" he shouted to the enemy cavalry. "Run home to your sodding nursemaids you cowards, you amateurs!" he howled as he pulled his horse around. A crossbow bolt sailed past him into the trees, and he felt the hot breath of a nearby horse behind him. As he looked over his shoulder, he was surprised to see how close the mercenary had gotten so quickly, and swallowed hard as the man drew his spear back to ram into Costica's flank.

There was a horrible moment as the enemy cavalryman drew his face into a gap-toothed leer. The next moment was equally horrible, but for different reasons; Bogdan felt his hair whip past his face, and watched as an arrow shattered what few teeth the mercenary had left, lodging itself in the back of his throat. Blood blossomed from the bandit's mouth, and he bit down involuntarily on the arrow shaft as he plummeted from the saddle.

"Gotcha" Mihai muttered, lowering his bow and stirring his horse to move again.

There was no dissuading the mercenaries now, as they put everything they had into a final charge. The Free Company arban was approaching a wind in the road, and Bogdan found himself hoping this was the end of the line. As they rounded the corner, he looked to each side and saw rows of archers, bows raised. "Oh hell" he cursed. "RIDE THROUGH! AND GET DOWN!"

The enemy unit rounded the corner just in time to see their tormenters duck low in the saddle, and the unexpected maneuver caused them to pull up slightly in surprise and concern...giving them plenty of time to notice the trap they'd blundered into.
