That's highly debatesble.

I got plans to switch most nations to merchant republic just to avoid the estates.

It seems like the estates bonuses are mostly economic.
So I'm giving up autonomy, which lowers economy, for a boost to another part of economy.

I might be wrong and estates could be balanced and give good bonuses if micro managed. But I will have to wait and see.

The nobility gives military bonuses, if that is what you want. Also, they can give you good generals, manpower and such at the cost of things like loyalty and increased influence.

I'm hoping the next dlc will have major reworks for merchant republics. Adding the hansa back in some capacity, and updating the merchant republic government form.
- outside of re-introducing merchant leagues from EU3 in nomine i cant see how Hansa can be brought back. After all it was not a real nation per se, that why i actually like that it is finally gone in Cossacks.

i actually understand why they don't have it for merchant republics. they are supposed to be fairly small with scatted holdings and they are effectively completely controlled by the burgers faction completely.

i actually understand why they don't have it for merchant republics. they are supposed to be fairly small with scatted holdings and they are effectively completely controlled by the burgers faction completely.
No one said that their estates would have to be the same as the normal ones. But the small thing is the key as long as a merchant republic remains small it might not make sense for them to have to deal with the estates system but as they expand they should have to.

I don't see the point in slaves as an estate. I really can't see any ruler giving them control of anything (barring, of course, military slaves like the Mamluks).

What estates do the Byzantines have? I'd check myself but I can barely afford food ATM, NVM DLC.

Why do Merchant Republics have no estates? Seems pretty unfun to play as one now.

Maybe have Merchant Republics having "influential families" as estates? Like in CK2?
And granting the same family (estate) multiple province in the same trade node can get a bonus on Republic's trade power in that node?

Why do Merchant Republics have no estates? Seems pretty unfun to play as one now.
I think it probably has to do with Merchant Republics, outside of Novgorod, tend to grow tall rather then wide?
That's just my guess, it also could do with the fact that the whole republic system was DLC oriented and they didn't want to remove it.

The Estate system seems interesting... Is it moddable? I am looking forward to having the Jews, the Slaves (for colonial nations, some provinces in the cotton belt were majority slave populations) and Women Suffragists (in the extended timeline) this way.

Slaves as an estate? How much loyality or influence can you expect from slaves?

Theocracies get Estates same as most everyone else, the exceptions being Ming (Celestial Empire) and Merchant Republics.
Estates are fully moddable.
Have made a few myself focusing primarily on the Colonial Nations (Nothing ready to be shared though) :)

Siberian Clan Councils do not get Estates. Native American Councils don't get them either. Not sure about the Mesoamericans and South American non councils.

Edit: Mesoamericans and South American non councils do get estates. Councils definitely do not.

'Slave Owners' would make sense as an estate. Not slaves.

Even then, 'Plantation Owners' might make a bit more sense too and be a bit more 'politically correct'; and you could use them to boost production in provinces.

Then the 'trading in slaves' modifier could also give a massive boost to Plantation Owners' influence.

I am not sure how to improve the Merchant Republics; but I have to say that I like the Faction System.

I think the faction system just needs a revamp.
But I don't want estates to replace them entirely.

Merchant factions could consist of:
Guilds: Craftsmen: Production boosts.
Traders: Wealthy Trade Folks: Trade power/value boosts.
Mercenaries (Venturers?): Militant Faction: Replaces Aristocrats: Colonial boosts/military boosts. (Sell units/manpower to allies mechanic?!)

Estates in the Merchant Republics could consist of:

Clergy/

Families (replacing aristocrat faction and including benefits similar to a mix of the nobles and burgher estates)/

Cossacks (if multiple Steppes provinces are owned)/

So it would unfortunately seem. Wow not only do they remove the Hansa, they didn't update the merchant republics. .

I don't know, the way it is set up now is fine. Makes the republics a bit different and more unique.

As for the Hansa, they still exist. Lubeck is the same thing, minus two provinces and a name change. Same ideas, events, colour, skins, etc. You'll just have to work a bit harder early game. Which is fine by me, Hansa was extremely powerful early game, and by mid game could fight Austria and France pretty well, no problem. You can easily still get there, it just isn't handed to you on a platter any more. A welcome change IMHO. :p

The Estate system seems interesting... Is it moddable? I am looking forward to having the Jews, the Slaves (for colonial nations, some provinces in the cotton belt were majority slave populations) and Women Suffragists (in the extended timeline) this way.

Brazil too also had an overwhelming slave population and also several successful settlements built by runaways on the frontier, but those would've operated independent and fully autonomous from the Portuguese Empire and Brazil and most were crushed anyway. Not sure how much political representation slaves would actually need, considering the fact that they were sufficiently repressed and rarely had the power to ask for demands regarding political reform.

Freedmen, on the other hand, are a different matter entirely, in post-abolition nations in the extended timeline. But the demands of the freedmen should clash with the demands of the nobility that want to keep some sort of power over the blacks and force them to remain an underclass entirely dependent on the grace of the upper white strata for survival, even if they were no longer legal proper (i.e, sharecropping).

There were many white slaves in the EU4 timeline as well. Irish slaves and several other ethnic slave groups were cheaper and more abundant than African slaves through the first half of the game.

I like the idea of Colonial Nations and nations that form from those Colonies getting 'Freemen' and 'Plantation Owners' as estates in addition to Burghers, Clergy, and Nobles.

I would also not mind seeing Colonial nations that formed with pro-native policies having 'Natives' as an estate. That would be great.

Obviously estate mechanics in colonies would be a lot more complex and some of these estates would be very opposed to each other.

It would be even cooler if they added 'directives' to give to Colonial Nations as to which estates to support.

Maybe have Merchant Republics having "influential families" as estates? Like in CK2?
And granting the same family (estate) multiple province in the same trade node can get a bonus on Republic's trade power in that node?
That sytstem only makes sense for genoa and venice, not for lübeck and novgorod.
