Hehe. Economies overheating in Vicky.

But that's certainly a novel way of looking at it. I think part of your situation is the new population in underdeveloped areas - Morocco and Portugal, namely - pulling down the already-small average.

What's your ruling party's economic platform?

Interventionalist + Protectionism me thinks.

I consider an economy overheating in Ricky when one several factors occur. A huge increase in exports due to a temporary price fluctuation. Clearly that growth would not be sustainable. An overheating economy could also be one that has reached the limits of it's growth, but have just had a recent surge. If Sweden for example grabbed a 15% increase in exports in a year. Their room for nominal growth is limited by population concerns as well as maxing out of the period tech tree. Therefore they would be growing at above a trend rate.

Extremely rough estimates for long run potential nominal GDP growth.

Russia - 6% - 8% (may never overcome the technology gap)
Sweden 4%
UK 7.5% (massive non-national population; already starts high)
Prussia 10% ( unification ... )
US 10% ( immigrants/assimilation )
Ottoman Empire 3%

You get the idea ;-)

GDP / capita growth would be governed by non-national population % and technological progress.

This is probably the first AAR that I’ve read that tracks the economies of all major AI nations. Sweet. :)

1839 : Ends And Not Means

1839 : Ends and Not Means

The frequent rebellions that troubled the empire were a result of political affairs abroad as well as the mild civil war that was drawing to a close. The rebellions in Cuba, Portugal and Puerto Rico were put down with little incident so that now a nation could stand together.

There was a war on ?

The major political event of the year developed in the Middle East as war broke out between the Ottoman Empire and Egypt. While the major powers of Europe took sides, the people of the Iberian peninsula cared little for the outcome as the conflict appeared to be nothing more than two homeless men fighting over a rotten apple core.

The Ottoman Empire Struggles

The conflict quickly turned into a drawn out knife fight in a phone booth with little to be gained for either side. With the major European eyes watching the conflict in the Middle East, Spain sought to expand its influence in Africa. Tunis had a population of 1.2 million souls and would solidify an African base of operations. With the same soldiers that had finished putting down the rebellions in the Caribbeans, Spain landed her soldiers on the shores of Africa once again.

1939 Economic Report

economic%20report.jpg

The major points to note are Russia's struggles after an initial surge in GDP and consistent (but slowing) American growth. With a literacy rate slightly above Spain's ( 20% vs 18%), and a huge population the Russian juggernaut has plenty of room to grow but remains restricted by terrible levels of innovation. At current rates, Russia will fall past Spain as the poorest major power in Europe within 5 years. It appears that Austria's growth will continue to disappoint for quite some time.

Spain's budgetary situation continues to remain rosy. Despite military efforts the country is still running a daily surplus of 5-10 (primarily due to heavy tariffs). Recent government spending has been distributed to the expansion of wine and textile industries as well as the reopening of a still unprofitable small arms factory. The government's stance was to start to establish an upper middle class that could power economic growth for generations.

You gotta love tariffs.

So Tunis now? That's potentially trouble if France ever decide they don't like you.

Is Tunis coded to be prioritized by the French like certain parts of Africa/Polynesia are to be German?

Yes. I smell danger.

Now with excel graphs! Sweet. :) Keep it up.

Still looks very informative and well thought out. Lets hope the Spanish economy continues to flourish.

Pretenders To The Throne

1840 Pretenders To The Throne

It was in 1840 in which Spanish people would come to understand that their ambitions were far greater than the country in which they lived. In the spring of 1840 the war with Tunis drew to a close leaving Tunis with only her capital province and abject humiliation.

An Uneventful War Ends

However Spain has now grabbed most of the "low hanging fruit" and expansion with its meager military would come at an ever increasing cost. The mild expansion of industry that had come as a result of mechanical production had now drawn to a close and neither the private or public sector had the resources to continue an expansion. Where would progress come with such anemic research and innovation ?

When a colonial scandal broke out and further tarnished an already battered political reputation, Spain awoke to the reality that her dreams of empire had never been further away. With a prestige of -40 Spain sat as the 3rd worst nation in the world with respect to prestige. Stepping on uncivilized nations with an anemic military impressed no one. She was a bully and a remarkably weak one at that.

We Truly Could Not Afford This

News Abroad

The empire upon which the sun never sets has entered into a difficult conflict in India. Their war with the Panjab has bogged down in northern India, occupying a great deal of British troops and attention. British tension with China has been put on the back burner while she attempts to deal with an extreme agitation. Some believe that this may give the massive nation of China time to prepare itself for any future conflict. Who would know the consequences if this sleeping giant awoke at British provocation.

Economic Report

The predictive power of the Spanish Economic Council seems in doubt. Just as poor Austrian economic performance is predicted, a 17% boom shakes the sleep from a rusty economy. Both the US and PRU, two of the most stable economies to this date, fell into a recession. The cyclical nature of the business nature seems apparent as no nation aside from Spain has strung together constant economic progress. If military expansion slows and new markets do not continue to open for Spanish goods, a decline in growth may be seen.

More troubling than sustaining growth in Spain is the fact that even with growth, catching the other major powers seems an insurmountable feet. Austria, a nation similar to Spain, has over double the GDP per capita.

economic%20report.jpg

** Note: The extreme boom / bust pattern thus displayed in the economic data is likely due to several causes. One, already mentioned, is price fluctuation. The young nations have few factories, and when prices shift, they can dramatically impact exports. Secondly and perhaps more importantly is how innovation is implemented. For the most part the impacts are sudden and directly with little integration time. When I discover electricity in the game, the gains are nearly immediate. In reality the integration of electricity and its impact on productivity took a great deal of time. This difference may give rise to the extreme difference in the real GDP growth rates vs Victoria GDP growth rates.

Those boom/bust cycles are crazy.

Real capitalists would have not liked it at all. But yeah, you seem to be doing okay. Just stabilise domestically then annex Portugal, Morocco and Tunis.

Annexing Portugal will not be possible for quite some time. My BB sits at 12 and they have a very large number of colonial provinces. Considering I would have a hard time fighting a paper kitten, I don't want to go over 20 in BB.

If you want to carefully nibble away on some nation, humiliation in the first peace agreement would be the way to go. That way it would only cost you 1 prestige each time you declare war.

At least your GDP hasn’t gone down yet.
