Hi, all. It's been a while since I've posted anything here, so few will likely remember me, but that's alright. I've stumbled on a story by blue_emu that he stalled out and reversed the German Blitzkrieg as France by using a mixture of regular INF and MIL troops. I want to test that theory myself. Specs are as follows:

AAR style: Gameplay/Pic heavy. I have some skills as a writer, but don't expect much of a story from me.
Game: HOI2 DD
Nation: France
Start: 1936
Difficulty: Normal/Normal

House Rules:

No ahistorical moves (e.g., nabbing Chinese IC's, annexing/puppetting Spain, Polish Gambit, etc)
No leaving the Allies until at least after Germany is defeated.
No extending the Maginot Line
Production limited to INF, MIL and TACs/INTs. No brigades, no naval units. [I won't disband other units already in existence, though]
NO RUSHING RESEARCH![subject to change]
MIL/INF will be as close to parity as I can manage, meaning one MIL division for every INF division, as manpower allows.

Update should be tonight or tomorrow. I expect to either implode and die within four years or CONQUER ZE WORLD!!!!!11!!!1!....ahem.

Vive le France!

Chapter One: Preparations

Alright, let's get this show on the road. My opening moves are pretty typical of defensive French games: I change all my leaders to Logistics Wizards, shuttle my troops from their useless outposts in the Far East and Africa to where they might actually do some good, and set up my initial research and production queues.

Focusing on industry first and foremost.

Nice runs beginning, will likely change them as tech progresses.

I decided to go with INTs instead of Fighters, seeing as France already has a few and will benefit from the quicker research. Two groups of squadrons of TAC and INT apiece should be enough to cover the skies of Metropolitan France, so I don't anticipate building any more aircraft until the Axis is well-heeled (if I can get them there). Mostly 1936 is a waiting game, but the first batch of MIL comes in by February...I hadn't realized they popped off so quickly. In fact, the whole run'll be completed by November. I'll have to watch out for my piteously small manpower pool, and make sure I never overstack MILs in my armies...always need at least half INFs, to keep an effective offensive capability. I plan on my static-defense turning into an elastic-offense as quickly as possible.

On March 7th, I receive the first of several gearing bonuses, which lessens my peacetime IC penalty and gives me 15 manpower. Woohoo! Take that, Gerries!

What's that, you say? You still have nearly three times my effective IC?

ICcompare.jpg

...nuts. Soon after, I get a Rogue Politician event, and choose to ignore it for a two-move slider change toward Authoritarian. This gives me a net increase in partisan activity, but a decrease in DoW dissent and Consumer Goods need, which are my main concerns in the game (those darned consumers sure need a TON of goods!). I also choose to manually make a slider-move to Standing Army, as I'm not certain what events I'll get for free and I want SA to be maxed out as quickly as possible, anyhow.

Ethiopia lasted all the way to April 2nd! I, for one, am thoroughly impressed by their pluck and fortitude, myself. I don't think I've ever seen them last so long. /sarcasm

On June 11th, France holds its first election. On a whim I decide to Elect Right, kicking myself for not making at least one minister change and taking advantage of the reduced dissent.

On Joly 18th, Franco finally looses his cool and goes all grabby-hands over Spain. He has a pretty good starting position, too:

SCW1.jpg

Can he hold it?

This gives the Naties an effective 19 IC versus an effective 16 IC for the Republicans. Of course I have absolutely no troops on the Spanish border, so I have no interest in how it swings either way. The Cabinet gets around to considering the Spanish Question on July 24th, and I eventually decide to assist. It takes me into negative money, but I get a free slider move toward Interventionism, and I get to thumb my nose at the Gerries. The Italians and Germans both sent their support to Franco, while the Russkies lent arms and men to the Republicans. The Brits, as per usual, ducked out and took the extra dissent hit rather than actually take a stand. Regardless, I'll hold fast to my commitment to the Allies, and pray for a Republican victory in Iberia. Red Team Go!

By August, we're actually leading the Allies in terms of boots on the ground. Given that we're in for one of the most active theatres in the whole war, this gap isn't likely to shrink unless I get totally screwed over by this plan.

ArmyCompare1.jpg

It's a start.

France also has the Allies' second-highest airforce. I'm tempted to Nofog to get the rest of the world's stats, but I'm afraid that would be too depressing. By August 15th, money's back positive, which means research is going again. Hooray!

Things are humming along nice and boringly through the middle of October. The only events of some not are the success of Franco in Spain:

SCW2.jpg

I guess he CAN hold it.

Have you ever noticed that when you're playing an Axis nation, Franco always loses the SCW, but when you're an Ally (or Russia), Franco always wins? That's just odd...but I've noted it on most of my games. Looks like I might have to eat my words here, though, as the Republicans resurge through the second half of October. Come November, they're on the verge of retaking Madrid.

SCW3.jpg

Front Line as of November 2nd

I'm finding it impossible to keep my word on techrushing (self-defined as studying a tech more than one year in advance, e.g., any 1938 tech beginning any time before January 1st, 1937) while simultaneously keeping my research focused on my narrow production goals. I'll try to keep both as balanced as I can, but if I have to I'll invest in certain streams significantly ahead of time, as there's no way I'm going to research superfluous branches of the tech tree like nuclear technology.

The rest of 1936 and the first quarter of 1937 pass without incident. The front lines in Iberia remain fluid—the Republicans take Madrid in January and are driving a corridor North through Siguenza by April, with an eye to bisecting Franco's holdings. It remains to be seen if they will be successful...I'm hopeful, but I also know the AI never saw a good war it couldn't lose.

My first MIL batch ends at the end of March, because of IC issues. I'm thinking of cancelling the remaining INF serial, as I still have unreinforced units and units still to upgrade, but I'll leave that decision for the next update. My military situation as of April has me with 83 total military units, concentrated on the border with Germany, Belgium and Italy. It remains to be seen if I will establish a defensive line within Belgium or wait for the Gerries to come to me. I could use the BeNeLux IC's more than they could, after all...and the German ones, to boot.

As always, comments and criticisms welcome.

Interesting, I'll be following this. :)

Good luck! I've stopped the Germans before with a similar plan, except I use 8 Garrisons to hold the maginot line (total 16) and everything else is thrown at stopping Germany. However I couldn't turn the tide until late '43 when SU declared war on Germany.

Good luck! I'll be reading.

Thanks to Chamboozer for joining in even before the first update was posted!

Thanks to Storm501, Colonel Bran, volksmarschall, and Edzako as well!

Colonel Bran: I've never used militia either, really...in fact, I generally disband them ASAP to get the manpower back into my pool, but I've read some plausible arguments about their use as defensive troops and force-multipliers for front-line operations. Honestly I don't expect their offensive capability to factor in much at all, but they'll be good targets to soak up enemy fire and allow my decent infantry and the few other "good" units I have to remain in the game longer.

volksmarschall: So at least the plan is feasible, then! I've got stacks of seven fronting the Rhineland now, all a combined-arms force of roughly half INF and half MIL. I'll consider stacking full-MIL armies there to hold that line, or at least overstacked MIL ones...say 4/5 or so. Depends on what I determine my need to me on the mobile front.

Eszako: Hopefully it won't be too hard, but I'm not a stellar player, like some. My last VH/Furious AAR as Germany stalled out at Aachen (colloqually termed Aachengrad), and I lost by the end of '41. So it remains to be seen how well I can actually do. Perhaps I can incorporate some roleplay in once things begin to get interesting, too.

Once again, thanks everyone!

The Game is Set

It is with only moderate regret that I decide to cancel my serials of TAC and INT. They're just too IC-heavy for what I have to do. I can't keep building INFs and more MILs while reinforcing my drained units and upgrading while also building up my airforce. So I'll jjust have to make do with what I have, and what the rest of the Allies see fit to base in France. Hopefully the Luftwaffe gets bogged down by Britain.

Resource/Industry/Production overview for April

Checking the force comparisons, I'm a bit worried by the Allies' paucity of ground and air forces. As it stands, the United Kingdom just has three squadrons more than I do, and their ground forces are now less than half of mine all across the board. Keep up, limeys!

ArmyCompare2.jpg

Now, given that it's just partway through '37 I suppose I can forgive them, but my confidence in survival is not increasing with each passing month. Us frogs will just hunker tight behind our borders for the rest of 1937 and most of 1938.

On June 7, the Japos go with 'Teach the Chinese a Lesson' in the Marco Polo Bridge Incident. Looks like we're in for a hard east-asian slugfest. We'll see if the Japanese can make good on their threats—and if they look toward French Indochina. Hopefully we won't give them that chance! As June turns to July, the only things of note are the continual back-and-forth in Iberia and the slowly-encroaching Japanese advance.

The rest of '37 is spent sloooooowly upgrading. I've only got ~10 IC to spare at any one time, and over 150 IC's worth of upgrades to perform. Some people like to hold off on upgrading for as long as possible, but I need all my rifles spotless and all my men spic-n-span if I want to hold back the Hun.

In September I have an accidental blueprint discovery; Advanced Machine Tools! Woo-hoo! That should make tooling up for war a bit easier when I get around to researching it. October rolls through, with most being quiet. Japan has longsince stalled in Sinkiang, unable to capitalize on a scant few landings in Eastern China, while Franco has reversed his fortunes considerably in Spain.

SCW4.jpg

Boooo

Looks like my prediction is going to come true...although Franco was in a similar position himself last update, so who knows? I may make it a point to bring the Republicans on-side should they win, or should they still be fighting after the fall of Germany (assuming I am still fighting after the fall of Germany).

On November 25th, I get an Economic Policy Initiative. My options are rather harsh...I can either force it through, which gives me one move toward Central Planning and one move towards Closed Society (neither of which appeal to me too much) and 5 dissent; strike a bargain with the Ultrarightists for more slider moves in the same vein, including one toward Authoritarian, but a whopping 10 dissent; strike a bargain with the Socialists to move one to Central Planning and one to Political Left, or just back down. I vassilate between the last two options, eventually choosing to back down, as on balance the CP/FM slider is benefiting me where it is.

At the end of March, 1938, Hitler decides to revisit his birth country...and brings along a few thousand SS and Wehrmacht troops to back him up. Luckily (for him!), the Austrians are amenable to his proposal of Anschluss, so the troops really just get a nice Alpine vacation. And I get a sweet, sweet gearing bonus that knocks up my peacetime IC by another 10%. Almost there!

Anschluss.jpg

Apparently HOI has a different definition of “tolerate” than the rest of the Universe, because the International Community did diddly squat

Doesn't Germany look hungry? It's got a gaping mouth around Czechoslovakia, ready to gobble that small country up like a Bratwurst. We'll see if the Czechs allow themselves to get nibbled and bitten off. Also at the end of March, Franco stops playing around, and my theory gets yet another anecdote. The Fascists declare victory in the Spanish Civil War. Let's just hope Franco remains Axis-friendly, instead of Axis.

By the middle of May, I'm feeling antsy, looking at my two lonely serials of troops. With manpower nearing 600 and IC's to spare from the gearing bonus, I start up an extra INF and MIL serial apiece...knowing this will leave me with extra MILs, which I can hopefully use as Panzerfodder to stop Germany in its tracks.

In June I had another election. This time, Left and Right both had a Left-moving slider, since apparently I'd nudged a little TOO far to the right. I chose Elect Right anyway, on a whim, kicking myself yet again for the lack of minister changes. Standing Army's roughly evenly-matched. 1938 keeps clipping by, and I build up my Panzerfodder. I've got over 100 total divisions by August; I don't know if that's going to be enough, so I don't intend to halt my serials.

On September 30th, we all gather together in Munich to settle the Czech Question. Hitler promises that if we'll just be nice and let him have the fortified Sudetenland, he'll be a good little boy and never ask for anything again. Not even for Christmas! Well, that just sounds dandy. Especially because it gives me another (my last?) gearing bonus! Now my IC's will be on-par.

Which of course means that Germany only has 130 more IC's than me. Which is more IC's than I even HAVE.

ICcompare2.jpg

And my spies tell me the Gerries have less than 100 land divisions, and rough parity in air divisions with me. Which means that I'll be royally screwed by July 1940. In February, I finally decide to do some tinkering with my ministers, and switch my Chief of Staff from Gamelin's useless Fire Support to John. Q. Frenchman, advocate of the People's War. An increase of 25% in manpower growth and a reduction in Infantry construction is EXACTLY what I need at this point.

Twiddling my thumbs until March 15th, when Germany finally takes its bite out of Czechia.

chomp.jpg

CHOMP!

That brings us up to nearly the outbreak of war. I'm going to continue to build up my forces, and hope and pray that what I've read is right, and that having stacks of mixed MIL and INF are more effective than fewer stacks of pure INF.

Till next time, as always questions, comments, and criticisms welcome.

Interesting strategy. I'll surely be watching this one.

Thanks, rocky43! Glad to have your readership!

Now that the approach of war is immanent, I have a decision to make. Do I send my INF/MIL armies into Belgium to try and forestall German momentum when it finally pursues the Manstein Plan? I'm not certain how effective a fighting-retreat by INF/MIL armies would work against Panzers that might well overrun them, and I'm nervous taking my troops out of their dug-in positions along the Northern border...

...on the OTHER hand, the Belgian line is AWEFULLY close to Paris. If I can stall out German momentum and halt their advance within Belgium, and hold the line, I can have more breathing space. This means I'll either have to retreat to France if I want the BeNeLux IC's and territory, or just bite it and try and conquer Germany through Italy-Sigfried Line, but it's a viable option.

Thoughts?

It's always a bit tough to play as France against Germany. :p

I think both of your strategies for now are good enough to try it out, but speed is always of the essence:D Good luck!

ahh, i still remember using militia in the armageddon scenario as prussia, they sucked badly because roma was using armored divisions, and the first militia has like zero hard attack :p. But yea, apparently by militia model'43 theyre pretty good, and generally they are very good in defense (but if counter-attacking then I would use my best divisions to maximize my chances of winning, within the command limits).

on the other hand, only those divs get malus, who actually are over the limit, so thus you could still use militia in support attack for example, first attacking with the best divs with full command limit, and one hour later bringing in the militia with reduced effectiveness?

so as to using either mixed or pure stacks of infantry, id definitely stick to separate militia- and infantry stacks, but they can still be together in the same province :)

I think you should go into belgium only because you would be dangerous if the gerries came through the belgian border and stuck your troops in Holland

Interesting strategy. Hopefully it is succesfull and the Germans don't push you to the Ocean.
