Chapter 2: Let us stand together

Castle Renon, Paris. March 1419

"My Lord," I stammered. "At this rate we won't be able to stand up to them, we must strike now!"

"Well," Charles said a bit angrily. "What do you have in mind? I didn't make you General of the Guard for nothing."

"Listen then." I said. I took a map of France out and rolled it on the table. "Ok, it's like this, come closer ladies and gentlemen." The nobles and knights walked over and started to look at the map.

"Ok, first we look at things from a political viewpoint. We have to fight a 4 front war right now; you all know that right? No country, not even England can support that finacially." They all looked worried.

"Since when were you a strategist?" Tybalt asked.

"I served as a military strategist in Castile when they fought the Moors." I answered, Tybalt then shut up abruptly. "Now we have 2 choices, we make peace with one, preferably Burgundy."

"Why them?" Asked Charles, "Didn't De Prissy scar you?"

"That he did, but I don't let things like that get to me, I'm thinking about the future of France here." I responded a bit scornfully. "Now let me finish, he sign a truce with them, and concentrate on England." I put some figures on the map, colored blue, red, grey, yellow, and purple. "These are all the armies presently deployed all over France. The Blue armies are us. We have 21,000 souls in Paris, counting my unit, and 13,000 in Lyonnais. This is all not counting our vassals." I pointed at the red, yellow, grey and purple, “That’s England, Aragon, Burgundy and Brittany in that order, a lot isn’t it?” A few of the nobles were wondering about it for a little. “Now if we take 2 out, like Aragon and Burgundy, it gets easier.”

“But Lord Viktor,” Darren spoke up, “Brittany has all but joined with England, the duke there still refuses their rule.” I thought about it for a second, this changed a lot.

“If England gains any more power, the situation doesn’t change, England will own the north. They will flank us on 2 sides alone, not counting Burgundy and Aragon. This is a very grim situation, plus we have Henry sitting there with his invasion army in the heart of France!” I slammed my fist on the map in anger. The nobles and the king looked at me in worriment. Then a courtier ran in the room. “What the hell happened?” I asked

“My lord, The Burgundians are marching to Paris! De Prissy gathered 23,000 from Flanders after you beat him, I think he wants revenge My Lord, your orders?” He answered.

“We’ll meet them. Give me time to get a plan.” I said. “Commanders, get your men ready.”

“Yes Viktor.” They all responded, “You need help boss?” some asked.

“I’ll be ok, get your men ready and get some rest, it’ll take a few days for them to get here.” They all left the room quiet as mice; I walked over and grabbed some wine, opened the bottle and took a swig. “How the hell am I gonna get outta this one?” I thought. “Hmmmm I wonder what would happen if…”

The Battle at Seltia Village, April 2, 1420

“If De Prissy wants a war he’ll get one.” I said. “Move our force to Artois and our south guard to Bourgone. Send our diplomats to Aragon and get them out of this, even if it means bribery, do it.” I told Charles. “There’s no other way.”

“I believe you, Viktor, but if you yell at me like that again I’ll cut you down myself!” I laughed at him.

“Ok, ok I’m sorry, milord.” I said snickering. I walked over to the map with my commanders. “ Ok, here’s what we do. Sir Jean is in Lyonnais leading the south force; he’s going to siege Bourgogne. Their capital is undefended and should be easy to take for him. My force shall engage De Prissy in their own turf, we’ll force them to fall back into Arras and hopefully push them into Flanders. Our vassals will distract the English while we take Burgundy apart.

“Question, Viktor, how the hell are we going to beat De Prissy again?” Tybalt asked.

"We'll know how when we get there. Get ready to go." I said.

"Yes sir!" they said in unison.

We left Paris and headed to Artois. 21 thousand strong we marched to meet De Prissy's and his "mighty army" We fought a few skirmishes along the way and then ran into the biggest roadblock ever..

"M'Lord, a message from one of our diplomats." The messanger said. I looked at him,

"Diplomats? Give it to me." I looked at the letter, the royal seal was on it. I opened it and sat down on a rock. The letter read:

Dear Grand General Viktor Von Saradith of the newly formed White Lightning Army,
My spies reported that Barbant and Luxembourg has joined with Burgundy. You must get your men out of there and withdraw to Paris, They will soon meet with De Prissy's force and try to crush you with superior numbers. We can't lose another general like you, The morale will bottom out if you die. Good luck to you.

Sincerely,
Lord Renalt Chartes
Minister of Foreign Affiars

“Are you kidding me??” I shouted, “Godammit, the whole world must be against us!”

“What happened?” Asked Tio.

“Yeah, what’s wrong Viktor?” Mia chimed in. “You’re never like this.”

I gave them the letter, and then they freaked out too, while they rushed off to tell everyone else I thought of a plan. “Gonna need some outside help though…. But this should work.” What I didn’t know is this would be the deciding battle for us…

Finally, got 2 updates tonight :)

Seltia, March 28

"Just like Chess." I thought "You know what to do, tell Lady Claire of Picardie of our dilemma." I said to the messager

"Of course M'Lord." He responded. He got on his horse and rode out. I watched him ride away into the forest, then another idea struck me. I turned to my guard,

"Get Tybalt and Darren over here, I need to talk to them." I said. He nodded and rushed off. I started rubbing my hand and looking around the village. I saw the kids at play and wondered how sweet it would be to be totally ignorant of the world outside this backwater village; to not have to fight, but to just play under the golden sun and the bright blue skies. Mine own childhood was like that.. only a bit rougher. I started thinking about it again..

Clang! Our swords meet again, father's sword was much more relentless today. As I was wondering why he said "Make your body like the rivers and seas of water." he tried a thrust and I dodged, spun right and pointed my blade at his side. He smiled at me, then tried to knock my sword up, but he missed this time.

"I knew you were going to try that." I said, "I'm no fool, shall we go again?"

"Heh, sure kid." And again our swords meet, till the sunset. We went in for dinner, in the grand dining room. The room had a huge table and paintings all around the room. As soon as I sat down a guard ran in.

"What's the meaning of this?" Father said. I looked at my dad and back down at the guard.

"The Teutons are here!" he shouted "They broke our lines in Memel, they're coming!" he fell over, then we all saw the wound in his back. The women started screaming as I rushed outside the room and out the castle. The guards were fighting the Knights as I rushed onto the bridge. One of the guards shouted,

"Prince Viktor, leave this to us!" he shouted as he stuck another knight down.

"I don't think so." I said. My eyes narrowed as I drew my bow and fired onto a knight right on the chest and watched him fall onto the bridge. I reloaded and fired again into another one, then another and another until I ran out. My father ran outside and joined us. "Just in time, these guys are annoying." He laughed loudly, but then I saw an archer from the other side of the bridge aim striaght at us.

"Down!" I screamed, but it was too late, I saw it fly straight at me and I froze. I prepared for the pain but then a blur flew past me. Then, everything slowed down. I looked down at my feet and saw my father down on the ground. I got on my knees and pulled the arrow out. "You old fool, you should've let me take it." I said.

"No, it's... Poison" He gasped. I was in shock. "Get out of here, now!" He yelled.

"But what about you..."

"Kid, do me one favor, live. Go to England, I got friends up there. Find yourself a bride and make big fat babies... don't end up like I did. These wars... they aren't worth a man's life. Only for a strip of land... and for God? What has he done for us?"

"Father, rest, there are other reasons besides power and glory..."

"Then," He started to cough. "I'll be watching you from above.. Remember what I taught you kid, now go!" He shouted

I got up and looked at his face one last time as he slowly passed on. I looked around the castle, there was only one way out. I ran onto the bridge and a load of the Knights stood in my way. I swung my sword around and got into my stance. Then they rushed me and as they did that I somersaulted over them and ran off the bridge. I ran onto the road and then saw their commander with the archer next to him. "Now's my only chance." I thought. I ran at the archer and then he saw me and smiled as he aimed at me.

"You're going to join your father you fool!" he yelled as he fired. I jumped over the arrow and cleaved him. He fell to his knees while his body twiched violently and then he fell to the ground dead.

"Should've known better... Now it's your turn! I shouted at the commander. He got off his horse and drew his sword. He ran at me, screaming and I stood there waiting. As he swung his sword I dodged and I faced his back. I ran straight at him and then a blinding light came as I ran right through him. I heard him fall and I said, "That was for Prussia, you piece of shit." I took his horse and rode into the forest, not looking back, wondering if I ever would..

"Wake up man!" Tybalt said, he slapped me and then I dragged him down on the ground and drew my knife.

"Oh it's only you, why the hell did you slap me man, just tap me or something." I said angrliy.

"I tried you idiot, now what did you want us for?" Darren asked.

"How many archers do we have?"

"Thirty-five hundred." Tybalt said.

"Perfect." I looked over at the camp, then to the villiage. "Listen, we're going to burn the forest, with Barbant's and Luxembourg's armies in it. My unit will be bait, Darren leads the left flank and Tybalt leads the right." They looked at each other then nodded. "Now, my unit will be comprised of light cavlary able to ride into and out of the forest before the fire storm hits them. Give them another day and the dutch will cross."

"But, how can you be so sure that they will go this way?" Darren asked.

"This villiage is a huge strategic point, if they beat us here, the road to Paris is clear. They won't take any chances, they need the cover." I said looking up at the sky. "the archers will surround the forest behind us. When the signal is given, surround the forest with your men and don't let any of them pass."

"Yes General." They answered and left. I looked at the villiage again then started thinking,

"Now, I gotta make sure the villiage is going to be alright." "Guard, get me Tio and Mia." I said. He nodded and ran off. "Perfect, too perfect." I said to myself.

The next evening for the first time I was nervous, everything was riding on this. I could've maybe thought of something to have gotten us out if we lost, like in Orleans, but where could we have run if Paris fell? They're only a few miles away my scout said a few hours ago. I touched the hilt of my blade and then calmed down a little, I drew it out and started spinning it around and then swinging it. I got into my stance and started again. Tybalt walked over watching my every thrust. "Save it for later, they'll be here soon, we're all ready General."

"Let's go then." I said. I got on my horse and joined my men. I looked out and saw the Dutch ride onto the field. "Get ready to run." I said smiling. My men laughed as the Dutch stopped. "Time to draw them in." I said taking our army's banner. I rode out and started swinging the flag around. "I'm right here, I'm the one you want!" I shouted. Then I saw their commander give a signal and then they started charging.

"Are you kidding? It only took that?" Tybalt said.

"Now you know why they're only one province each, and why their joining Burgandy." Darren said. The three of us laughed then I got serious.

"Get to thee posts quick, those idiots are almost here. Stay in hiding until I ride in, then close the back door and keep them in." I yelled as they went away. I turned to the Dutch and then I was in shock. "Oh shit, Here they come! They're early, go!" My men and I rode into the forest. "Perfect, we got them." I thought, but then things took a turn for the worst.. As the sky turned black and red above the trees...

OOC: Free preview of my next AAR, Through Iron and Blood here; why you ask? Because this is a part of a series and the 1st 3 AAR's in my sig tie in somehow. The the last AAR in there is the result of the 1st 3. It's confusing, but when I'm done the first 2, it'll make sense. The last AAR I can't really play, yet. I need a certain flag and Avatar for it :D

My name is Gustave Steingrave, Prince of Hannover and grand marshal of the Hannover army. I'm called Gustave the Brave all throughout Germany after the war with the Hansa states. My stand against the united Hansa army made my dream a possibility. I wish i could tell ya what that is, but I don't have time. I gotta deal with these sorry excuses for nobles.

"Why would you even help them?" I said. "Even now, the French royals are sieging Dijon! Their own capital! Their greatest general was beaten by a merc!"

"The French will fail, they always do. That merc was lucky, just like you were in Lubeck."(Mecklemburg) The noble said. "We will join with Burgandy and crush them."

I sneered at him. "But I have grander dreams! I will unite the states!"

"Impossible, you're no Barbarossa." The other noble snapped.

"He was just like me before, how come I can't do it? I'm a hero now."

"No, you're just a brat! We won't be your vassals!" The noble yelled.

"Damn, fine then, at least let me escort you to Arras." I muttered.

"Fine." and we rode on. Then we encountered a small force just ahead of us. "It's them, charge at will!" He shouted.

"No it's a trap! He wouldn't use such a small force! Go around and outflank them!" I shouted. He wouldn't listen at all.

"Quiet kid, you have no idea what your doing. Let's go." They rode off as I watched the French ride into the forest. I followed them in, hoping I could convince them before it was too late, and it was...

I looked around, the flames were everywhere. I drew my sword and rode back, but a knight stood in my way. I kept riding ahead and he shouted at me.

"I'm Sir Tybalt De Lans of Orleans! I won't let you pass!"

"I am Gustave the Brave of Hannover! You're throwing your life away fighting me like this!"

"Gustave?" He said, "Then it will be a battle!" He charged me and then I rode ahead, and then jumped off my horse with my sword, Flameberge drawn as did he. He opened up and that's when I struck, I got him in the side barely. When we hit the ground another knight came and almost cut me in two.

"Dammit, another one?" I turned to him, he was a little older than Tybalt, maybe a little faster too. I dodged his attacks as Tybalt got up and joined in. Somehow I kept fighting them off, but then as i was about to deliver a deathblow to the older knight he knocked my sword out and onto the ground behind them.

"Any last words?" Tybalt said smiling.

"Yeah, you think I'm gonna die that easy?" I flipped up and over them and grabbed my sword. I laughed at them as they stood there dumbfounded. "Well, since you like to play with fire, how about this!" I swung my sword and fired a huge fireball at them. They ducked away as it flew through into the fire. Then I looked up as the sky turned back and I jumped away as a lighting bolt struck the ground. I looked behind me and saw a figure. He looked straight at me

"Don't you know little boy, When you play with fire, you'll get burned." I threw another fireball at him and he dodged. it and started to mock and laugh at me. Turned out that this would be my biggest fight...

OOC: Just finishing up my last update and putting another one with it. Any questions feel free to ask, and responses are welcome :)

I was going against all odds, and it felt like I was going against the entire French army. Soldiers were laying dead around me and their stench filled the air along with the smoke from the burning inferno that surrounded us. I turned around and back making sure the others didn't make a move on me. I drew my sword and faced the merc that stood before me. He thought he could talk to me like a kid, I'm just as old as him! "How the hell did I get into this mess?" I thought, no turning back now, I gotta fight my way through that merc, but he can use magic too.

"Wait! I am Gustave Steingrave, Prince of Hannover! I fight to restore the Holy Roman Empire, I mean no harm to you and your war with England Lord Viktor!"

"Why were you with them then?" Viktor asked with a scowl. He looked like he wanted a fight no matter what I told him, but I tried anyway.

"I tried to get them to join with me, but Burgandy charmed them with dreams land and gold! There was nothing I could do." I said.

"You want to be the Emperor?" He asked. "My only dream is to unite France, if you can beat me, then I'll acknowledge you." Drawing his sword he faced me. Nothing stood between us. The wind blew and cinders from the fire floated above the ground. I looked straight into his eyes and rushed him screaming. I saw him draw back and fire another bolt at me. I jumped over it and tried to cut him down, but he deflected the blow and threw me onto the ground. I rolled back and got up in time to block his slash and dodge the next. He ran at me again and I ducked and then went for the finishing blow but somehow he deflected it. My frustration mounted as I got up and we both exchanged blows. I had to take a risk, and it had to be now. I flipped over him, turned my sword around and thrusted it in his back, only to see it hit nothing but air. I got up and our swords met again.

"Dammit, why won't you lose!" Gustave shouted.

"I got people to fight for kid, I ain't dying yet." I answered. Then an arrow flew right past my face and hit a tree. Then I heard shouting.

"Gustave! Run now, our men are here!" The woman shouted. I turned to see her. She wore heavy battle mail and carried a large spear.

"Ok, I'll leave this to you, Lydia! You better come home!" Gustave yelled as he ran to the end of the clearing. "I'll remember this Viktor!" He ran into the darkness as I faced the girl.

"Don't do this woman, do you know who you're dealing with?" I asked her.

"I don't care! You will not hurt my lord, I am Baroness Lydia of Oldenburg!" She rushed me only to fall as my sword ran straight through her stomach. I was in complete shock as she went to her knees and hit the ground dead. I turned away as thier soldiers ran off into the night. I walked over to Tybalt and Darren and said, "We gotta go, De Prissy's men are in the fields of Arras, we meet them in 2 days." They nodded and walked away with me along with my men as the fire slowly burned out.

The Siege of Arras, April 24, 1420

The bright blue sky shone through as we marched along the road. News came that Sir Jean took Djion, the Burgandian captial and was marching this way to join us. I hoped that Lady Claire would make it soon also. I looked around admiring the countryside when someone started to call me.

"Viktor! The scouts report that their at the gates of Arras. They'll fight us in the field." Tio said.

"De Prissy is either bold or has something up his sleeve." I said while thinking. The fields are open, he can't hide anything outside. He had 20,000 men and 5,000 knights, compared to our 18,000 men and 6,000 calvary. While I was mulling over all of that we marched over the hill and saw their army deployed in a line in front of the city. "We will meet them straight up, no bullshit tactics." I yelled. "Form up and march down!" The men rallied and we went down the hill and lined up next to them.

"You're cornered now, dog of England!" I shouted

"You know what they say about cornered animals Viktor." De Prissy yelled back. "Soon you will be too."

"Quiet you idiot, I'm ending this now, for the people!" I shouted. "Vive Le France!" Screams and the sounds of hooves and greaves hitting the ground filled the air as I rode at them. I drew my sword and fired a thunderbolt at their army. Bodies flew through the air but the blast didn't make it to De Prissy. He made a magic barrier and blocked the blast.

"I'm sending you to hell Viktor!" He said as he lit the ground ablaze and sent the flame straight at me. I froze for a second and then remembered how to create a barrier of my own. I mumbled the arcane words "Eu forte sho nil!" as the barrier formed and blocked the fire.

"General Tybalt!" I shouted "Break their left flank, don't let them hide in the city!" The fight waged on, I cut down every Burgundian in sight as I looked around for De Prissy. Then I saw Tio and Mia taking the knights apart, but I saw a knight charge the both of them from behind. I found a bow and quiver on the ground and hastliy primed the bow and fired on the knight, only to miss. I looked again and found another arrow as I rushed to prime it again and fire just in time and hit him in the back. I looked for Tio and Mia and when I found them they smiled and then froze in fear and pointed behind me as a pikeman was inches way from skewering me, but fell down as I turned my sword and ran it through him. I ran to where Tio and Mia was and with my luck we were surrounded by more of them. "Thanks for the save you two." I said

"You too Viktor." Tio answered.

"I'm not about to let these fools scar your beautiful bodies." I said grinning. I knew if this wasn't said in the heat of a fight I'd be slapped silly but in this case it may be worth a try.

"If we survive this fight, maybe we'll let you see them." Mia said then she winked. I smiled

"Better make sure these two come out alive." I thought, then I laughed and then rushed the nearest guard as the fight continued on for another hour.

"Viktor!" Darren shouted. "We've outmanuvered them, Jean's force is just down the road, they should retreat soon."

"Thank God." I said. "We got them now, Artois is ours." Shouts and screams of joy were heard as the Burgundians escaped. The war was turning our way, but it was only the beginning for us.
