Herbert watched as the planes flew overhead. it was a hot summer's day that he would not forget the noise those planes made that day. He has seen this hundreds of times but never was he as nervous as he was that day. the nervousness was like a great ball of fire creaping up his body and it felt it needed to be let out. He was to be called to the front to fight for the crown. He knew when he came to Cairo that he would probably be called to the front but for a while his division was held back before they were needed but that all changed when the Germans arrived last month. He dreamed of the day when he was just at home in Scotland guarding the fleet but when the Italians declared war he was called to Cairo. How he missed his lassie and he hoped that he would stay alive in time to see her again.

An outline of the division’s situation just before they marched to battle.

So you'll be following a single brigade through the desert campaign? Should be fun. ;)

The hot sun beat down apron Herbert: his head hurt so much as he slowly traded across the sand. The valuable trucks, which were to be able to keep troops more refreshed in battle, had broken down. Since then Herbert’s head had hurt and sand blew in his face. Just as he felt he could not go on the happiest words in his life he ever head said, “ Mount the trucks”. Finally Herbert could rest his sand filled shoes and his flaggy back. Then a man in a small car shouting out, He looked battle scarred and his voice sounded dry. He was covered in sand and he works with a limp, which is the commanding officer here. Herbert replied my commander is a few miles away. Then he got the message, which made him send out a lot of troops to alert all small commanders in the division.

The loud sound of gunfire ripped through the line of Herbert’s platoon. He didn’t have time to think about how they got there and in the hot desert sun beating down on him. He ordered his men forward. He heard a man fire his gun and saw 20 Italians moving forward as part as a flank maneuver he saw his ten men another company was all the stopped this charge from happening. He yelled return fire but before these words left his mouth the sides exacted volleys. Palettes of lead flew through the air but the lack of defenses meant that Herbert’s, en fell. Then a roar erupted and he knew that he needed to charge. Rallying his men he saw a charge erupt across the line as he charged forward. A man tried to get ahead but was shot down. The fighter deseeds into a mess of melee and occasional shot. You could not think except to try to stay alive he knew he needed to do something to withdraw and then he heard the magical words. “Withdraw objective observed”.

Herbert watched his brigade commander Barry Luke. He was a tall man with blue eyes and dirty blond hair that blew in the weather of the desert. He was a smart man who wanted glory. Herbert knew that glory killed people but kept his mouth shut. As he reflected on this he turned and heard there is an attack hold the line hold the line. He was so startled he almost jumped up. He surveyed the camp. Jeeps were parked around and tents lined the sand. Furthermore the only defences were a small trench with some dog holes around it, he gathered his company and jumped into the dog hole. Knowing he was the only working company at the moment utilized the British square half firing and while the reloaded the others fired only this time there was over lap. This still wasn’t enough has artily tried to get working small groups of soldiers was all but as his men fired hopefully into the enemy with the sound of guns in their ears they hoped for the best as general Luke called for reinforcement from the main trench he started to go into an almost trance only thinking about is men then he knew what he had to do in the vital part of the charge Herbert knew he had to do something. He knew his wife and kid had to have a life not caring about the consequences he charged into the fray with a few other company’s commanders.
