What will be the feel seeked by playing I:R?

In eu4 (to me) it was incarnating a nation. You have so much control and monitoring option that your country always obey you. You are a nation in a game : "the floor is lava". You Always seek for something but there is relationship features. They bring a real ecosystem where you have to know where you put your foot. And prepare yourself. This is true on early and middle game. But once you reach the late game yoir blob is so stable and so strong that even a civil war can be easely managed.

What about I:R.??
this is the main definition of the game. So as a country you will feel threatened by instable character. But what about external threat?
Does "barbarian" threat real? Or just an annoyance?
In late game as a blob will we feel as weastern roman empire? Inside threat and outside threat? Or the blob will erase every external threat?
What do you think?

This will put you in the world as it was around 1,750 years earlier than EU4. To a greater extent you are 'making it up as you go along' with less information (detail) to work with.

The game ends at the time where historically the Roman Republic became the Empire and long before the fall of the Western Empire. The barbarian threat is different, the barbarians 'closer', but they are also potential allies.

The main threat is perhaps not the barbarians but the other civilized states.

I just hope that interaction with and between characters is done well. If it is only a playing a nation without significant character involvement then I'll just cry a little, and go back to Crusader Kings. Because I really want to dive into the ancient world in a way similar to how CK2 allows me to dive into the medieval world and feel it rather than working in a machine room and pulling some levers when some values goes up or down.

I would like different feels for different cultures and empire,
If I play as carthage and successfully build a strong thalassocracy in the medditerreanea I want to be threatens by strong empire as well as beeing threatened by important familly with a strong power base within my empire,

If I play as a gaulish tribe and successfully implant an hegemony on a region (like the averni and later Aedui empire), I want to struggle with my tributaries which have different governement and feuds with other vassals while keeping in check the most powerfull tribes within my empire and still feel threatens by roman invaders and germanic migration

If I play as a powerfull steppe empire I want to feel immensely powerfull on the steppes capable of squeezing the seleucid out of his last peny and sending raids deep into the pontic sea but having to defend my power base from incoming rival steppe empire and having some kind of unity/loyalty from my vassal tribes to check

I would love to have different feeling for each of those,
gathering enough power to be called a great empire should be amazing and a big feat to be proud of,
however, holding such empire for a century or two together should be extremely challenging and rewarding
