Greetings, members of the Paradox Forums and welcome to this Stellaris AAR. Usually, I linger on the CK2 and EUIV forums and many moons ago, I wrote a number of AARS, most of which failed due to a wide variety of reasons such as boredom, broken saves and academic work. Then in 2016, I got massively burnt out on AAR writing at the start of University and put it aside during my studies. I considered continuing writing after I finished my degree, but I was massively burnt out on CK2 and was just not interested or motivated to do so.

But now that has changed, mostly because I’m stuck inside for the moment and need something to do to get through the days, before my Masters starts in September, so I figured I would do a Stellaris AAR with the new Federations DLC on the latest patch.

I had originally planned to do a Star Trek inspired AAR, with all the races being Star Trek inspired. I realised however that that would lead to a game of humanoid races in a vast universe and I wanted a more interesting gameplay experience. So that idea was scrapped, instead I created a motley collection of custom races with varying ethics and ideals and plan to set the game to load them instead of the usual mixture of Stellaris races.

I plan to have an introductory chapter out over the next few days which will serve as introduction to the race that I will be playing as in this AAR. I will say that the race is fantasy based and as such takes influence from various fantasy sources.

With the introductory stuff out of the way it is time to talk about DLC and mods.

DLC:

Federations

Megacorp

Apocalypse

Utopia

Synthetic Dawn

Leviathans

Humanoid Species Pack

Mods:

Expanded Colours:

Flags: Emblems and Backgrounds

I usually play Stellaris with some mods, but given the most recent patch most of the ones I used to use are outdated. In addition, I have not had the most reliable of experiences with them. So, I decided to only use mods that allow me to make a flag I liked for my empire.

One final note, I do hope you enjoying reading this AAR, feel free to give constructive criticism and advice should you wish to do so, as I am a bit rusty in my knowledge of Stellaris's new mechanics

A @Saxon125 AAR is always a pleasure to read! Good luck. :)

The introduction to the race I will be playing as is now complete, need to check it for spelling and grammar but it should be out over the next few days. In other news, I have now put the game settings into the starting post.

An Introduction to the Dawi Race:
An Introduction to the Dawi Race:

Dawi Fundamentals

The Dawi to put it bluntly are a short race: both genders stand between three and four feet tall. To compensate for their stoutness, Dawi have strong arms, broad shoulders and powerful legs. All of this in turn makes them a durable and strong race with both men and women being extremely fierce and capable warriors on the battlefield. Most male Dawi grow large beards to differentiate them from ‘Dawi’ females, as without beards it is difficult to differentiate between the two genders. This is turn gave rise to the belief among aliens that Dawi women do not exist, and Dawi simply spring from holes in the ground.

Dawi are well accustomed to mining and tunnelling, as they make their homes inside the mountains of their homeworld or underground rather than on the surface. As the surface of their homeworld Karak is incredibly harsh and unforgiving, as such they do not generally travel on the surface unless absolutely necessary, preferring their underground or mountainous homes. Mining is the main source of income for the ‘Dawi’, and it has made them a hardworking and diligent people eager for wealth.

The Dawi are also incredibly skilled engineers, having created many ingenious devices over the course of their long and storied history. Much of these inventions have been weapons of war, such as Thunders Guns’ firearms which use an explosive powder to prime and fire bullets into enemy formations: or the infamous ‘Bolt Cannon’; a large ungainly device which hurls huge bolts into gates, and other such structures, in order to pull them down

However, to say that the Dawi only craft of weapons of war would be crude: engineers played a key role in the creation of the ‘Deepway,’ the roads that connect all of Karak to one another underground. It is entirely possibly to cross from one side from the planet to the other without ever seeing the sky. This incredible feat of engineering was accomplished over the course of many generations. Even in the present day, it being adapted for modern Dawi technology and it is rigorously maintained by the ‘Deepguard’ Engineers with years of experience.

However, the Dawi, like all races, are not perfect; compared to many other races in the galaxy their ability to breed is slowed, owing to the hardiness of their own forms and the harsh homeworld on which they reside.

Society and Culture

The Dawi are ruled by a High King or a High Queen. Each ruler is the head of their respective clan, when they die the firstborn male or female heir takes their place as clan leader. However, the ‘High Kingship’ is not hereditary and can be ruled by any of the clans.

Each Dawi is the member of a clan, the oldest clans once ruled their own kingdoms before the Dawi were unified under one ruler. Relations between each clan vary, most tolerate or are friendly with one another while others have feuds that stretch back centuries. As of 2200 the four clans with the most influence are:

Clan Gyrmir:

Clan Gymir is the current clan that hold the High Kingship and has done so for several generations. They are the clan that spearhead scientific advancement and the expansion of knowledge. Great technological advancements have been made under their rule, including the invention of robots to aid in mining and the generating of energy. They regularly find themselves butting heads with the more traditional clans, who disfavour the focus on technology and robotics.

Clan Warzul:

Members of the Warzul Clan make up the majority of the military forces. While Clan Warzul was once filled with Dawi who were sceptical of Clan Gyrmir, they have become more accepting of them after the clan went to great efforts to refine and improve Dawi weapon and armour technology. Marital alliances have further strengthened the bond between the two clans and they are steadfast allies with one another.

Clan Bhulfzar:

Clan Bhulfzar are comprised predominantly of merchants, craftsmen and artisans; they also have the most skilled and competent miners among the Dawi. They maintain good relations with the various clans, though it is well known that they are the greediest clan with a lust for gold and other forms of wealth. Regardless, they serve as the backbone of the Dawi economy.

Clan Norgrim

Clan Norgrim are comprised of religious isolationists and staunch traditionalists who despise Clan Gyrmir’s technocratic leadership. They used to be the most pre eminent Dawi Clan, but gradually fell from favour, when Clan Gyrmir took the High Kingship. They alliances with a few of the lesser clans, but these themselves are tenuous owing to their fanatical devotion to tradition as well as their religious beliefs.

While religion used to play an important role in the earlier history of the Dawi Empire, in the present day the Dawi faith is hardly practiced with the expectation of Clan Norgrim. The High King is indifferent to religious practice, knowing that the vast majority of his people are agnostic.

Government

The current Dawi Government is based upon the fundamental idea of scientific advancement; indeed, nothing is more important than scientific knowledge and technological advancement. The job of the High King is to guide the ship of state with his wisdom and knowledge and uphold technocratic principles. As such scientists are extremely well respected and well-funded, with extremely far reaching privileges within society. While the Dawi are extremely materialistic, they also cling to the ideas of warfare and militarism a reflection of their violent and unruly past, where infighting among the various kingdoms was a frequent occurrence.

History

The history of the Dawi, despite their present technological advancement is not complete. Various wars over the course of their history has resulted in the loss of knowledge and a fragmented and difficult to decipher history. At present Clan Gyrmir scholars have made rough approximation of the four key periods in Dawi history.

The Period of War: (1000-1400)

This period is marked by regular conflict following the death of the first ‘High King’ Dorgrim who unified the disparate Dawi under a single ruler. Dorgrim’s daughter Valia proved incapable of ruling with any competence, resulting in the Dawi lords breaking away to form their kingdoms. Centuries of strife and conflict followed.

The Age of Rebirth: (1400-1700)

A period of peace between the Dawi kingdoms as well as a time of great cultural and artistic change, it was during this time that many grand architectural works were created. The Deepway also began construction during this time. Many Dawi during this period crafted romanticised artworks or literature, of the prior age, seeing it as a time of barbarity and incivility.

The Steam Revolution: (1700-2000)

This age is marked by considerable technological advancement, with the creation of extreme industrialisation methods and the refinement/improvement of many old technologies. During this time the first Automatons are created by Clan Gyrmir. Considerable military advancements were also made leading to a number of violent conflicts, with great loss of life as a result.

The Modern Age: (2000-2200)

The ‘Modern Age’ is marked by the ascension of Clan Gyrmir who unify the Dawi under a ‘High King’ for the first time, since Dorgrim, in the year 2000. The technocratic principles espoused earlier are established, leading to extreme scientific advancement. Space flight would be achieved in the 2150’s, this would lead to a limited extraction of resources in the Orzar system; though a hyperdrive capable of travelling to other systems would not be developed until 2200.

Well there you go; you can probably tell by now that I based my custom race on the Dwarfs from the Warhammer Universe, I have not actually started playing the game yet but I intended to start playing and putting together the first gameplay chapter soon.

And very dwarfish they are too :)

I've never played Warhammer, but I found the Dawi history and culture quite interesting nonetheless. I'll definitely be following this AAR now.
Same for me. :)

And very dwarfish they are too :)

That they are indeed. :)

In truth I have not played tabletop Warhammer, I have only played the Total War: Warhammer games. Still I have to agreed that the Dawi history and culture is fasinating to read.

Like others, I've never played Warhammer (and, to be honest, I don't really know the universe) but I find interesting this presentation and your race !

I'll follow this (as much as I can ;) )

Nice beginning, this bodes well for the future!

Cheers!

Chapter I:
Chapter I: Where no Dawi Has Gone Before: 2200-2210:

So begins the royal chronicle of the High Kings and Queens of Clan Gyrmir and their rule over the Dawi people, as they ascend to the stars. The chronicle starts with the reign of High King Belegar, the first High King since Dorgrim in the year 1000.

Belegar was a charismatic monarch who had proven his skills by unifying the various kingdoms under a single banner. He was also known to have a respect and understanding for miners, as such he espoused mineral extraction as a priority for the Dawi. The heir to the throne was Princess Thora, a woman who was considered to be a champion of the lower classes. She was also known to be a keen supporter of the building of outposts to expand the fledgling Dawi Empire.

The opening years of the Dawi’s ascension into space where marked by expansion into the outlying systems surrounding the Orzar system. Outposts would be built, mining and science facilities would be constructed to facilitate the gathering of resources as well as scientific knowledge.

While there was the expansion of the Dawi Technocracy in terms of size, there was also an advancement of traditions. Over the course of the first ten years of Belegar’s reign, a focus on improving and refining scientific advancement was ordered. This would be achieved by such changes such as proving further funding towards the science divisions, and providing a polytechnic education for all citizens. Such focus on scientific advancement could be seen in the ordering of a Habitable Worlds survey.

The focus on science could further be seen in the implementation of academic privileges. The specialist population which most consisted of scientists and researchers had their salaries increased and access to consumer goods was vastly increased. This did cause friction with the soldiers of Clan Warzul as well as the miners and technicians of Clan Bhulfzar, though Belegar’s charismatic diplomacy ensured that the privileges were instated without difficulty.

The Robots of the Dawi Technocracy were also modified during this period. Their bodies were redesigned to be more durable with extra plating and internal refinements in order to lessen their required maintenance. In addition, production lines were streamlined and modular designs were created in order to allow for more mass production.

By the end of the decade the Dawi Technocracy had expanded at a rapid pace into the systems surrounding their homeworld but the galaxy is still largely unknown; what it holds for the Dawi, remains to be seen.

I apologize for the shortness of this first chapter, I am trying to find a balance between text and image use. There were a lot more images that I took during the session. But most I felt were not worth writing about or were rather insignificant. I have not played past this point, so please do feel free to offer your thoughts and constructive criticism. I also would not mind name suggestions for the updated robots.

Setting up their galactic shop, as it were.

No worries, the length is not the issue of any AAR, but rather the quality of the writing. I find you do your style well. :)

The first 10 years had been great. There seems to be some critical nodes on the hyperlanes near your starting systems. Maybe the Dawis must focus on owning them. Who knows what lies in the rest of the galaxy.

Yeah I seem to have a rather solid starting postion for once in Stellaris, usually the resources around my starting system are mediocre or awful.

A Quick Apology:
My apologies for not putting out a chapter in the last few weeks folks, my mental health took a bit of a downward spiral and I lacked the will to actually write the next chapter. But now I am feeling a lot better and so the next chapter should be out in the next week or so.
