Ok, this situation is... funny somehow... but I don't think it feels quite right. It has happened twice in a row, in my last Provence/Jerusalem and my current Catalonia/Aragon games.
In these occasions I have seen republics... switching religions.
During my last Provence game I saw the republic of Venice taking a good chunk of northern Africa, then passing onto Iberia to swallow a very good chunk of it (around 12 provinces or so). Then, suddenly... Venice turns muslim.
During my current game I have witnessed the most bloodless, swift and democratic reconquista... ever. The republic of Cordoba managed to reunify the muslim south of the Duero and the Ebro but for 4 provinces (Algarve, the one at its side and Seville and Cadiz) plus all the old kingdom of Galicia... and then, suddenly... turning catholic. That in 1100. In 1100, there were only 6 provinces left in muslim hands, thus (the 4 mentioned plus Molina and other)
In both cases it seems the republics received refugees from the provinces they conquered in their court... thus, getting elligible for being elected as supreme ruler... and then... since they got nice marshalling stats, getting elected. So, we had the very enjoyable experience of a big muslim Venice... and a big christian Cordoba.
Ok... as I said this is fun. But, frankly, no matter how much they would conquer, there is no chance in hell the Republic of the Lion of Saint Mark would turn muslim. With Cordoba it's a bit more likely (like 0'00001 %... that is , I can see it happening, but it would be extremely unlikely), but it's again quite weird.
So... I guess there would not be a restriction on religion about 'ellections' in the republics. And I would really ask that to be somehow implemented, if possible... as I said, it has indeed happened twice in a row.
Ah, another thing I have noticed is that big republics (and these were), don't fragment over time in fiefs as feudal kingdoms would.
