On reddit people are celebrating that Leviathan got the worst reviews

That is low if it’s true. I don’t think that’s what they’re celebrating though. I think they are celebrating the fact that Paradox got the reviews they deserved on their release.

If Leviathan was good and they still got bad reviews I’d be upset.
If Leviathan was good and it got good reviews I’d be happy.

But since Leviathan is bad (the opinion or many players not just mine) it got the reviews it deserved.

people demanding an explanation from the devs.

why are you entitled to an explanation from the devs? are you one of those people who goes on twitter demanding explanations from a director after you hated the latest Star Wars movie? this is a product, if you don't like it, nobody forces you to buy it.

Like, we had bad releases before like the aforementioned Dharma or GC but the levels of toxicity have increased since then.

Have you ever considered that maybe the fact that they keep releasing broken products (something you yourself admit) is causing and increasing the frustration in the customer base and this is what is fueling the increased levels of toxicity? You and some other people in this thread are saying that PDX has released bad / broken games and DLC for a long time now but THAT'S not the problem... the problem is that people are getting angry about it?

Toxicly complaining about toxicity on the forums is just adding another toxic complaint to the pile. You're contributing to and worsening your own problem.

Given the responses, I'd wager that's the point. Trolls see a group of people that are upset and use it get the attention they crave so much. Though, most are at least brave enough to not make an extra account for it.

I disagree that they keep releasing broken products, their products over the years are average, some were poorly received, some were well received. some of the poorly received were fixed over time, some weren't. Each and every player can make a decision for themselves whether to buy their latest product. But the point of the forums is not to attack the devs for releasing a poor product, it's to engage with them on how to improve the product. And there's no need to be getting angry. Do you write angry letters to Samsung engineers when your tv doesn't work?

I think when people bought products from a company and invest their trust into them to a certain degree have been buying their products for a long time and even suggested their games to their friends, being slightly part of the success of a company they do feel entitled to what went wrong. They want to know cause they still care about the company. As many have pointed out they arent angry to hate, they are angry cause they know paradox can do better. While you state some games were utterly broken, none of the pdx games were outright unplayable. Also imperator rome has a good reputation, sadly it doesnt get any developers assigned to it for content in 2021. But you dont see people lashing out in their reorganisation post, people are mostly saddened as they started to like the game but understand the reasoning as it was clearly told to them what the plans are. Transparency is super important in a more and more connected world and it does build brand trust which is important for a company.

I did create a new account today but that's because I'm sick of the toxic aspects of gamer culture moving into the Paradox community. I first noticed it with Imperator:Rome which was review bombed on release with people who didn't even understand the game because they thought it will be Crusader Kings:Ancient Rome attacking Johan, the devs, PDX. Then they moved on attacking HOI4 after the naval rework. And now I see the same dynamic with EU4. I think it's a new development. Like, we had bad releases before like the aforementioned Dharma or GC but the levels of toxicity have increased since then.

You created a new account because you haven't been on these forums before or you have added an additional account. If it is the former, I can understand why you have done so, but if it is the latter, it seems rather cowardly, hiding behind a new identity. Just a bit confused of your motives.

Have you actually looked in this forum? People are constantly pointing out bugs and offering suggestions on how to improve the game and begging paradox to just address this.
And people are mostly pointing to paradox in general, not to specific coders working on the game (with the exception of Johan, who is a leading member so it could be justified). So your comparison with Samsung engineers is irrelevant.

Funny. I actually didn't pick up Imperator at first because roman history doesn't interest me. Later, I thought it might be worth the investment after seeing a youtube clip. I looked into some guides and found that instead of looking like a game centered around the roman empire, it instead seemed like "Crusader Kings:Ancient Rome" as you put it, as was turned off from ever trying it. Even now I hear its gotten pretty good but have never bothered to look again because it seems too crusader kingsy for me. I already have that. Maybe its not like that, I just find it funny that your claim of what people wanted from it is what I saw and made me turn from it.

As for complaints over new features causing massive backlash, I again have to disagree with your memory's. I played crusader kings 2 just after "Way of Life" released. Things were chill. A year or two later, defensive pacts were added and had serious problems and the forums were filled mostly with bugs, glitches, and complaints about the feature, just like now. I didn't join EU4 until Golden century, but I can assure you that was as much as a fire then as it was today over how poorly features were implemented. Since then, every EU4 DLC has had poor implementation and backlash from the forums and from the way people discuss the "new world" mechanic, changes to navy, and other old features on the forum, its likely been this way far longer than I've been here.

I think you didn't participate in imperator forums enough to see how much CK role players were disgusted with the "bland map-painter" that was Imperator. Basically they were expecting to assasinate and incest their way to becoming a consul as Caesar and the game didn't give them that. Even when Johan tried to explain to them that it was based on EU:Rome so it was a game in the tradition of EU games, they kept attacking him for mana and stuff like that.

Getting back on the topic of EU, I disagree that past releases drew as much flaming as this one. I don't remember after Dharma and GC that Paradox devs complained about the toxic community like they do now. I'd hate for us players to drive away the devs because of a few bad apples who are not being policed enough.

No, I didn't, I only buy them on sale after the initial kinks are worked out. But that's my point, you don't need the latest DLC to enjoy the game so all this outraged reaction is extremely over the top. You literally have people calling for Johan to be fired, attacking him for moving to Spain, all sorts of personal stuff. This is just another proof that gamers really deserve their reputation for being toxic if even a nerdy game like EU4 can turn into such a pile-on.

Past releases didn't draw as much flaming as this one because while past releases had their issues, none of them were as blatantly unfinished/broken as this one.

Do you write angry letters to Samsung engineers when your tv doesn't work?
No but I might leave a bad review and/or if I was spending time on some "Samsung forum" I might make a post to complain and I wouldn't expect people to call that review bombing / toxicity. (Plus if the TV doesn't work I have more than just a few hours to return it but that's a different discussion. :D )

Basically you seem to think that people don't have a right to complain about their bad experience with a product. Certainly there is a limit to what you can say when you're posting your criticism but I strongly disagree with the idea that just because they've released bad or broken DLC / Games in the past that means you can't criticize any bad or broken DLC / Game in the future.

Also this notion that just because "back in ye olden days" you had to deal with bad games on a CD that means that we have to do things like that forever makes no sense.
By that logic we shouldn't try to find new medicine to cure old diseases either right? "Back in my day people used to die from this disease so you should die from it too even though we have a cure now."

Yes, but your review/post will be answered by some customer relations flunky, not Samsung's head of TV engineering. And that's the point I'm making. No one likes to be criticized. It's not in the devs' jobs description to wade through players' complaints on the forum. So if we want to maintain this engagement, the community has to adjust its entitled behavior. Telling Johan that he is "from some south Stockholm sh**hole and .... the light and the space of Spain really put the zap on his head." (a quote from this forum) will not make any dev want to engage here.

Actually it is their job, especially when stuff goes wrong, That is why you have an PR department!
No it's not the devs job, it's the PR department's job. If you want to engage with the devs, you need to make sure the forums do not become a hostile environment. Otherwise, you'll just get corporate PR people and community managers to engage on the forum.

Hence why I said there is a limit to what you can say in your criticism, I don't think anyone in this thread is defending personal attacks / death threats / wishing death on anyone.

You're implying that people should just stay quiet, refund the DLC or wait for them to fix it because they've released broken / bad DLC before so people should expect this by now and they have no right to be upset by it. I don't agree with that way of thinking at all, people have a right to call out any company for their bad practices, in fact if the company keeps up those bad practices they can expect more and more of a backlash.

I find it hilarious that the only guy defending Paradox's catastrophical Leviathan release (yes, urstan, I'm talking to you ;)) has joined this forum TODAY and has only made posts in this one thread. I mean, seriously, what made you join this forum? I can understand people who've been playing the game for years quietly without being on this forum, and now, that they experience severe crashes and corrupted save files, join the forum to voice their discontent. But why did you join this forum?

Can you actually judge the "toxicity" of this forum and its community if you've just joined, and even worse, you haven't had the experience of paying 20€ for something unasable that even destroys the very base game (corrupted save files also happen to 1.30.6 games)
