I usually play as Xenophile/Pacifist/Materialist, with focus on research.
Materialist so that I get access to the government that gives extra research choices. Which makes it easy to quickly unlock the techs I need, such as Federation.
I'm usually the first to research that, so I invite in as many empires as I can to join (all the ones with similar ethics), and start declaring liberation wars against weakest empires.
They tend to fall easily to the technological superiority of my federation, and since the liberated empires copy my ethics, those fresh empires are often either of the Federation Builders or Migratory Flock types. The former I invite into my federation to make it even stronger, all the other types become protectorates for extra influence. With migration treaties for easier access to colonizing the best planets; and no need to worry about divergence since they share my ethics.
At that point it becomes easy to steamroll over the rest of the galaxy.
