In the very last years of the XIVth century, the cities and territories that joined the protection of the Lithuanians Grand Dukes begined to reconsider their allegiance- with the Mongol threat becoming weaker every days, the main factor -fear- that triggered the mass defection to Lithuania was gone. Realising their position of majority within the fragile Lithuanian state, the Ruthenian and Orthodox populations of the Grand Duchy reclaimed their independence. A compromise was made, and in the last half of the year 1399, the 'duchy' of Kiev was granted autonomy within a loose Lithuanian commonwhealt.

ukrainemapuw9.png

The Duchy of Kiev in the last days of the XIVth century

But with the vassal being much bigger than the lord, it was only a matter of time before Kiev would proclaim its full independence, under the leadership of its first 'duke', Rostislav the First.

Rostislav was a man with alot of ambitions, and enough skills to make his embitions being more than dreams. He considerated his realm to be the direct successor of the empire of the Kievan Rus, the powerfull and quite advanced (culturally and technically) state that existed in the east of Europe a few centuries ago, prior to the Mongol invasions.

kievanrusju5.png

Rostislav's duchy, and the land that once belonged to Kiev

Despite ruling on a vast territory, Rostislav still has alot to do to bring Kiev -or Ukraine, as the state was oficially called to indicate more a national sentiment than the domination of a single city - to dominate the region. The country has no proper army yet, the efficienty and the powers of the central government were very limited, and ferocious neighbors would certainly threated the existence of the country sooner of later.

Rostislav was then given by the nobles the mission to create an army for the nation. He also hired skilled advisors to enhance the morale of the army, and to help discovering new trading techniques.

This is my first real EU3 AAR, and for it I decided to choose an original nation that doesn't apear on the map from the start. Even if the country is quite big already, there is still alot of obstacles on the road, as it will be seen later. I hope that this AAR will be interesting enough to worth taking a few minutes to read it, and it will be written in the same style as above: gameplay but with with some bits of narrative (or historical contextualisation, as I'm not good at making funny or interesting dialogues between charaters. )

This game will be played as Ukaine (quite obviously), on the normal difficulty and agressivness settings.

With all those big rivals surrounding you, you'll be in for a rough ride. Good luck! :)

Looks pretty interesting, I tried playing them for a bit from 1399 but ran into 3.2 patch difficulties and gave it up. Did you give them more territory to start with? I thought that if you liberated Ukraine they only got four provinces in the south, although that might have been due to the start date.

This looks like one of the most promising AAR's. Definetely will keep an eye of this.

Heh!

That's an interesting one.

"Ukraine"? As in Kievan Borderlands as opposed to Lithuanian Capital (in Novohradak?)

Chapter I - The three Queens of Russia

The cultural identity of the new state was build over the 3 main East Slavic languages: Ruthenian firstly, and then Byelorussia and Russian. The population speaking this language had no problems accepting the relative Ruthenian dominance, because all of those cultures were closely related and united in the Orthodox faith.

belaruskt4.png

The first few years of Rostislav's reign were used to organise the nation and its army.

slidermovekp0.png

A real fleet is useless for Ukraine, we move toward land.

First diplomatic relations were opened with the immediate neighbours: Poland (wich was theoricaly the master of Ukraine, because of its union with Lithuania), Hungary, Moldavia, and the Russian city states of Novgorod, Moscow, Tver and Ryazan.

The cities of Moscow and Novgorod were in a struggle for the leadership in Russia since several decades ago. Now Kiev was about to break the fragile balance: by siding with a side or another in any future wars, the other side would suffer a severe disadventage. Border disputes errupted at some places were the legitimacy of one's claim was put in doubt.

ukrainefactsll2.png

In 1404 Rostislav accomplished was was fatally expected by the nobles of both Ukraine and Lithuania: the vassalisation of Ukraine was over, and not a drop of blood has been shed for it.

empireofkievuo9.png

Ukraine has now the freedom to establish stronger ties with its neighbours: a royal mariage was concluded with both Poland and Moldavia.

The occasion to affirm the new power of Kiev arrived when for an unsignifiant reason, Moscow and Novgorod returned to war again. The situation would become dangerous for Kiev if one of the side would get a signifiant victory over the other- federating the Russian people under its rule, one of those cities would easily be able to crush Ukraine. Realising that Moscow was far more dangerous than Novgorod (novgorod being farther, less populated and having a smaller army despite a good economy and some allies), war was declared against the Muscovites in late 1405.

invasionofmoscowpa9.png

The 'winter campain' in 1405-1406 was a quick one: with the armies of Moscow already involved deeply in Novgorod's territory, little resistence was put by the deffenders. The towns of Briansk and Orel were not fortified and fell easily. Siege was led in front of the cities of Vyazma and Tula, and soon the main Kievan army was in front of the Moscow Kremlin itself.

warwithmoscowuc8.png

Moscow fell in late 1406. This was the end of the First Ukrainian-Muscovite war, as Rostislav had already defeated the remnents of Muscow's army and had conquered most of its towns.

peaceatlastrp0.png

Rostislav's terms were harsh. More than half of Moscow's territories were sceded to Ukraine, wich had its territory now suddently increased of 1/3.

Kiev was now dominating the largest state in the region- but even if its territories were vast, the Ukrainian state was still very weak internally and the lands were often poor and not very populated.

FYROM: Thanks! I havn't installed 3.2 yet because I wantd to wait a few weeks and see if it was worth it, so I didn't encoutered any problem.

And yes I gave it more territories, mostly all the East Slavic and Orthodox lands of Lithuania (thats the main factors why its a different country, so leaving some parts in Lithuania would make little sence).

TelcontarElessa: Thank you for your interest. :)

RGB: Yep, as explained, the Slavic and Orthodox territories formerly part of Lithuania. ;)

Same with me, I'm hooked. Make sure that RUssia and Ukraine hold tight unions, unlike now -_- Dumass Russian leaders parted from Ukraine, when it was Ukraine and Russia combined that made RUssia what it is today. Defeating various tarter lords, expanding eastwords and west etc etc

I'm so dumb - bad clicking, maybe so lagg, wathever - the thing is, when I wanted to continue my Ukraine game, that wasn't anymore Ukraine. I accidently overwriten the save. :(

I should alway do backups. Now I don't feel like restarting this AAR, its jsut too bad for it.

I'm considerating making an AAR with the new savegame that sadly overwritten the Ukrainian one: it would be about the Timurid Empire. Is it a good idea?
