Unless Buddhists get some monstrous events (we're talking "better than Hindu" here), the sects are incredibly useful, to reduce your dominant religion province count so you can convert to Hindu or Sunni in an expeditious manner ))

That is a boring answer.

Theravada Buddhists believe that the Buddha was a extraordinary but ultimately normal man who managed through his extensive wisdom achieve nirvana (which is peace via oblivion, or ceasing to exist). These Buddhists follow his example and teachings in order to try and achieve the same for themselves.

Mahayana Buddhists believe that the Buddha is something like a demigod who guides and teaches us as a spiritual being even after his death and through his reincarnations. These Buddhists believe that nirvana is not achievable without the advise and guidance of the Buddha's spirit.

Vajrayana is actually a branch of Mahayana Buddhism unique to Tibet. They believe that only monks can achieve nirvana and give them special status. Monks must give up all worldly things and ambitions to achieve this and so cannot do it without the help of others since they are not allowed to eat anything unless it is given to them as a gift or live anywhere unless it is also given to them, they are not allowed to own anything.

These descriptions are very simplified so I apologise for any offence given by skipping important details.

Also the Tibetan branch is the one that some Mongols successor states adopted. :)

In the game, only Dai Viet is Mahayana, which is a bit sad. What other countries that is neither shinto nor Confucian could be of this denomination?

Why on Earth would someone want to stop existing?

(1) Assume the cycle of rebirth ad infinitum, going through birth, life, sickness and death over and over again. That is an important assumption which led to Dharmic religions seeking liberation from the cycle of life and death

(2) Buddhists read this cessation in very different ways - some as overcoming the distinction between existing/not existing. Also our way of viewing existence itself is ridden with illusion for the Buddhist, so non-existence is not to be understood as cessation as such, but a transcendence from an illusory sense of personal identity

The basis of Buddhism is that life = suffering and therefore ceasing to exist is paradise. It is not non-existence is every sense of the world but is is defiantly non existence in a material sense. It is not the same as heaven where you live after death it is more like your 'self' is absorbed into the universe. The reason for this is that attachment is the cause of suffering according to Buddhism, in a sense achieving nirvana is to become detached from everything material.

All of Vietnam as well as all of Japan (plus Korea before the 15th century). While it's true the Japanese also practiced Shinto, their ruling class practiced Buddhism first and foremost. The major religious themes in Japan in the EU4 time period are almost all centered around Buddhism (e.g. the Ikko Ikki revolt, warrior monks, the destruction of the temples, etc.). Only at the very tail end of the EU4 time period does Shinto become the state religion of Japan.
