I love going through the start dates from 1066 to 1337 and see the map change. CK2 is like a (rough and adjusted [for gameplay purposes]) encyclopedia. I also prefer the high and late middle ages as start dates. I'd find it sad to see the option of finetuning my start day scenario on a (at least month-to-month basis) gone. All the research has already been done for CK2, so why give it up and dpreive us of all these options?

If the game let you keep playing I'd probably play later start dates a lot more.

What do you mean 'no longer select any date we want'? When could we ever do this?

Oh wow you've been missing out. Every day between 1066 and the last start date are playable. You can select them by just clicking the little arrows next to the date.

Aw shit. I saw those arrows when I started out and they didn't seem to do anything.
Try the second half of 1157. KoJ is strong with a good ruler, Nuradin controls most of Syria and Damascus, Seljuk blob imploded into a bunch of emirates, Fatimids are still around, Sicily controls a patch of Africa from Tunis to Cyrenaica, etc... An awesome start if you want to play in the Middle East.

Yeah it is deceptive because if you happen to be on one of the first 2 bookmarks when you try it there is nothing to tell you why it isn't doing anything. For a while I thought from the load save character select screen you could go back in time through your save but eventually I realised my mistake. I'm now interested to do the norman challenge as the independent norman count in anatolia at some point after i finally bore of the d'Ivrea family

In my opinion, the best would be:
- A lot more bookmarks
- No daily starts (maybe a start every decade beside bookmarks?)
- The possibility to continue after the end date (the main reason I don't pick later starts, which are otherwise really interesting)

If there is optimisation and empire instability mechanics, long campaign would be awesome.
And CK3 should really have several starting dates. From migratory germanic tribes to early modern states management there are many cool features that could be made rich DLCs throught eras and not only on a geographic basis (like islam, China or nomads in CK2).

Yes it will probably be a hassle to make things fine for ck3, but it's up to the dev to make it worth it by introducing new late medieval mechanics encouraging players to pick these less popular yet very interesting start dates. It has been said that most players tend to start with the earliest dates, I belong to the minority then, which picks anything between 1066 and 1337 ; I particularly despise 769 for its inbalance and lack of diplomacy, I -barely- understand that lots of players like it, yet I don't want to remove it either.

Sill waiting for official statements by the way...

Yeah. They're pretty subtle and unless you press the centuries one or are zoomed out it's pretty hard to tell the difference usually.

The other way to approach it is to know a certain ruler or nation you want to play and advance the date to when that historically happened.

For example you can play literal crusader kings such Godfroy (1099), the various Baldwins, Queens Isabelle (1191) or Maria (1205). I'd recommend Baldwin I on April 2nd, 1100. The start is a bit rough with an immediate double Jihad, but you have a vassalized holy order and by borrowing money from the Jews you almost have enough money to vassalize another. With them being almost 30% HC you can punch far above your weight. If you have the silk road you also get two trade posts, making you immensely rich.
As noted above, Baldwin the III in 1157 is also good. Especially if you want to be in a stronger position.
But you can also do something crazy and try the leper king Baldwin IV in 1178

The appearance of the Ilkhanate in 1228 is also a large shakeup in the region and something that doesn't happen in game otherwise. There are some other interesting changes in Persia and India around that time due to the fall of Seljuks and the Ghurids leaving smaller successor states behind.
The Spanish peninsula could also be interesting with the advancement of the Reconquista and the Spanish kingdoms being less vulnerable.
Italy goes through some interesting changes

While we are on the subject, CK2 start dates have a benefit over EU4 and HOI4 ones: all are possible for achievements. As someone who likes to have an achievement as target, I have occasionnally started CK2 games in 1081 and the like, but the same can't be done in the other games.

I like the multiple bookmarks and even use some, but as much as I was impressed as I was when I discovered the "any day start date", I didn't expect the writers to do that again if it was seldom used. That makes me feel surprisingly sad when I think of the time and effort that must have been put into that feature. So cheers to whoever managed to pull that off!

Hm, so we'll lose interesting and important start dates with the most famous people of the medieval period (Richard Lionheart, Frederick Barbarossa, Alexios Komnenos, Saladin, Genghis Khan, etc, etc) in favor of a shithole fantasy scenario like 769 because of the players who can't see anything but the number of years left on the clock.

Hey, did you know there's an English Holy Roman Emperor in the game? It's Richard of Cornwall, a Plantagenet and son of King John (yes, that King John). He was elected King of Germany in 1256 and crowned King of the Romans the following year.

That's a good point. Why EU4 doesn't allow for achievs after 1444? CK2 is an older game and can do it, surely EU4 would be able too!

Also I guess a big amount of the work regarding different start dates is the history and as they have already done those start dates, that work is done. Ofc. they can be more accurate, but I don't think it's a mist, and if they want to be more accurate, the foundation is already there.

I think the end date should be extended into the early Renaissance period (up to 1600 or so). The game does not handle tech trees or colonization, but even the CK2 engine could probably handle it with some modifications.

As a side effect, this could make players more likely to pick a late start date. I think most players want at least 300 years of game time to achieve their goals.
I would like to point out that you can't choose your specific day before 1066. So the majority of players are pretty much used to it.
While not an intended feature, it can be done by modding a single file. I once played a game where I started as Al-Hakim the mad caliph. But there were less characters than in a regular start date (e.g. most rulers had no mother or sibling to make alliances). Within about 50 years of game time, there were enough randomly generated courtiers that I couldn't tell the difference.
