Before getting started I want to thank Philo32b as his AAR on Abyssinia inspired me to play with Abyssinia and to write this AAR.
I have already played many years of the game so much of this is retold from my memory and looking back at saved games.
Here are the ground rules I played with:
- No reloading from saves to change events
- No changing religion
- Never use Kill plots against my own people or that of my direct enemies
- No cheating
Now on with the story
Chapter 1 - Survival
The year is 1086 and my father’s plan (the Great King Yemrehana) has so far worked to perfection. If only he had lived to see this day.
This is the day I, King Kedus the first, have convinced the council and my nobles that the burning of the archives in Gondar was not the work of my hired men but instead the work of Shia Spies. This has allowed me to convince them that the coast of Harer is a safer place for the capital. Of course I like it for its new ways of thinking. This is the place for our kingdom to flourish. Gondar is backwards compared to the world but Harer is up to date Militarily and well advanced in economic and Cultural terms compared to the rest of the world. I have made Harer our capital. The only “compromise” was that I had to change my inheritance to be elective. However, these men where all fools as none of them would be granted voting rights and only I will decide who will rule Abyssinia next.
Although I am not a great leader my father’s plan has set me in the right direction. When I was but 16 he convinced the Holy Roman Emperor Heinrich the 3rd that I would be the perfect husband for his illegitimate sister as this would get her far away from the Empire. Although the Alliance that was formed held no real weight in action the Shia Caliph, Mustansir, was afraid that aggression against my kingdom would give Heinrich an excuse to invade the Holy Land. This has kept our lands safe for now.
I am surrounded by enemies but at least my Father’s Holy War of 1066 against Harer ended in our victory 3 and a half years later.
The Shia has grown strong under the expansion of his Emirs into Nubia and Axum. I tried to help my sometime rival and sometime friend the Duke of Axum when he was attacked. It was to no avail and he was overrun. One day I will regain these lands that rightfully belong to me when the Great Caliph is distracted.
Although, the Caliph has gained these lands they are still culturally my brethren. He has bigger concerns ever since the revolt of his greatest Emir left him without Outerjordan and Damascus. I feel as if my time will come soon.
My council has served me well these last 15 years. In particular my Son and Heir has proven invaluable these last few years once he bacmae of age. He has made a fine Chancellor.
