Before getting started I want to thank Philo32b as his AAR on Abyssinia inspired me to play with Abyssinia and to write this AAR.

I have already played many years of the game so much of this is retold from my memory and looking back at saved games.

Here are the ground rules I played with:
- No reloading from saves to change events
- No changing religion
- Never use Kill plots against my own people or that of my direct enemies
- No cheating

Now on with the story
Chapter 1 - Survival

The year is 1086 and my father’s plan (the Great King Yemrehana) has so far worked to perfection. If only he had lived to see this day.

This is the day I, King Kedus the first, have convinced the council and my nobles that the burning of the archives in Gondar was not the work of my hired men but instead the work of Shia Spies. This has allowed me to convince them that the coast of Harer is a safer place for the capital. Of course I like it for its new ways of thinking. This is the place for our kingdom to flourish. Gondar is backwards compared to the world but Harer is up to date Militarily and well advanced in economic and Cultural terms compared to the rest of the world. I have made Harer our capital. The only “compromise” was that I had to change my inheritance to be elective. However, these men where all fools as none of them would be granted voting rights and only I will decide who will rule Abyssinia next.

kingkedus.png

Although I am not a great leader my father’s plan has set me in the right direction. When I was but 16 he convinced the Holy Roman Emperor Heinrich the 3rd that I would be the perfect husband for his illegitimate sister as this would get her far away from the Empire. Although the Alliance that was formed held no real weight in action the Shia Caliph, Mustansir, was afraid that aggression against my kingdom would give Heinrich an excuse to invade the Holy Land. This has kept our lands safe for now.

I am surrounded by enemies but at least my Father’s Holy War of 1066 against Harer ended in our victory 3 and a half years later.

myworld1086.png

The Shia has grown strong under the expansion of his Emirs into Nubia and Axum. I tried to help my sometime rival and sometime friend the Duke of Axum when he was attacked. It was to no avail and he was overrun. One day I will regain these lands that rightfully belong to me when the Great Caliph is distracted.

Although, the Caliph has gained these lands they are still culturally my brethren. He has bigger concerns ever since the revolt of his greatest Emir left him without Outerjordan and Damascus. I feel as if my time will come soon.

My council has served me well these last 15 years. In particular my Son and Heir has proven invaluable these last few years once he bacmae of age. He has made a fine Chancellor.

Chapter 2 - Expansion into a true kingdom
It is the end of August in 1088. With the heat of summer passing it is the perfect time for WAR!!!

I can muster a grand army of more than 3600 Men. Even though The Great Shia has over 12,000 men in the field I am not afraid. Our destiny has always been in the North and all of Axum will be mine again.

Of course my Chancellor and Spy master have also informed me that the Shia has declared war on the young Basileus Konstantinos XII of Byzantium to conquer Armenia minor. The Shia troops will certainly be headed North Against this much more dangerous enemy. It will be easy to capture the Dusty wasteland of Axum when the Shia has a bigger prize to sway his attention. Now is the time to capture the Duchy of Axum

Our troops surge over the border and Siege Territory after Territory. This first year of war has been a great achievement with no setbacks. I have lead our troops to great honor

There is much rejoicing throughout the land, but something is not right. ..

My wife has been acting very different of late.

I send my spymaster home to investigate. He finds that she is angered by the succession law change from several years ago and is worried our son will be removed from succession. She is a fool as he is a better man then I.
No one Plots against me...especially not a wife who can no longer have my children. I send her off to prison without a second thought.

Just as news of her successful "move" reaches me I see a dust cloud gathering on the Horizon. It is the Shia main army. I have seen him too late. I can't pull my troops back in time and my army is annihilated in battle. I escape with my life.

I head home trying to figure out the right words to use to convince Caliph Mustansir why he should accept a white peace and not crush me into oblivion. If only my son where here to phrase things correctly...Perhaps it is just as well he has been at the Shia capital this whole time.

I reach home and my messengers arrive one after another. I refuse to see them as I can't allow myself to hear the bad news. Finally, my Marshall convinces me to speak with them. I can't believe my ears. Instead of liberating his lands from my control the Shia army has turned back North to engage the Byzantine forces in Armenia. I tell my Marshall to rally the levies. We will raid to further to the north Next year and take more lands.

In 1090 our Armies advance into the Northern reaches of Axum. We siege Castles and towns across the land. We are constantly on the watch for the enemy army that can't be contained. Mid way during the campaign of 1090 one of my son's messengers arrives. I fear he has been murdered imprisoned while serving as ambassador to the scum Shia Caliphate.

The news could not be better. Pope Nicholas the 3rd has called a crusade to recapture the Kingdom of Jerusalem from the Shia Caliphate.

His army will be busy defending against the endless waves of crusaders and against the Basileus. This is a great day.

My armies continue to gain ground. On February 17, 1092 The old Caliph dies and is succeeded by his grandson Caliph Usama the First. By May the Caliph has signed a White Peace with the Byzantines and appears to be losing his hold on Jerusalem. On March 15th, 1093 I force the Caliph to Sign over all 5 provinces of Axum to me.

To make things even better these lands have remained true to their culture (save one province) and religion so they are immediately integrated back into the kingdom of Abyssinia

1093religeon.png

I claim the Title Duke of Axum to Complete the conquest.

The next 10 years pass and I build up my base of power. Although I can now raise over 7000 troops I do not feel safe. Luckily, The Caliph continues to struggle against the crusaders.

I have finally married again (my old wife lives on in misery in prison until 1101). I marry Maire from Ireland as she is renowned for her great skills as a steward. This will better allow me to control 10 Territories at once.
1103demesne.png

Even better she converts to our religion. I'm sure when she heard of her predecessors lengthy stay in my dungeon she was happy to renounce the pope.

wife1093.png

The time is now right to begin the invasion of Sana. It is ruled by a ten year old who has few allies. Given that he can barely bring 2000 troops into the field I am confident it will be a quick victory

sanavi.png

By the beginning of 1106 his lands are all mine and he is forced to surrender to the ever growing might of Abyssinia.

I begin to realize that not only should Abyssinia be mine but also Arabia. I being to scheme to make this happen. The turks to my West look like a tempting target or maybe even the Shia can be overwhelmed as he is still fighting the crusaders.

The following passage is found stricken in a draft of the History of the Rise of Abssynia
At the start of the campaigning season in 1108 with the crusaders still ravaging the Shia Caliphate The great King Kedus declared his 3rd Holy war. This time his target was Arabia Felix and the great provinces of Mecca and Medina. In the year 1109 the Abyssinia army is crushed.....in 1110 the Pope calls off the Crusade...in 1111 Abyssinia lands begin to get sieged...The Not so Great King Kedus signs a peace treaty with the New Shia Caliph and agree to pay reparations of 630 gold putting him in debt 520 gold.

My son dies in Mid 1108 due to prolonged illness. I "elect" my Grandson Kifle to be my Heir. He is not the superb diplomat his Father was but he is still far more eloquent then I.

1108heir.png

Several years pass and although I am now in my mid-sixties my lust for power cannot be contained The battle for Arabia Felix is now just a distant memory. I turn my attention east. The Turks are at war with the Byzantines and several vassals have revolted against the young Turk king. Now seems like the time to take the Duchy of Oman and its 6 provinces.

omanz.png

I raise my levies and march to war again...

Nice to see an Abyssinia AAR that is doing well! It is always interesting to see the strategies that Ethiopian rulers employ to have a hope of a chance in this very challenging region. And you are coming through with shining colors!

How did you convince the HRE Emperor to marry his sister to your son? He hated the idea when I tried that. That was a nice score on your part because it gave you some breathing room without having to take a massive piety hit by converting religions to swear fealty to Byzantium. And then the Pope calls the Crusade against the Shia. Perfect!

Whenever I see the perfect ruler-to-be son I know they will die young. It always seem to happen. Although next in line is not too shabby either with 26 diplomacy... and that cool moustache. I'll be interested to see where you take this. Good luck!

Chapter 3 - The end of greatness...or is it just the beginning.

My armies march on the Provinces of Oman. Each territory falls one after another and never once does a Turkish army appear. After just over a year of sieges the enemy gives in to concentrate on their civil wars. The Great Abyssinia has grown to a size never dreamed by our ancestors.

1118lands.png

The time for war may be at an end..for now...I need to concentrate on spreading the true faith throughout my lands. Also I need to raise my many children..although I have been at war I have been busy elsewhere.

family1118.png

I will be able to pass on the starting of a new empire to my grandson. Imagine what the empire will look like in just a few more generations once we have wiped the Shia from the Earth.

Then on March 4th of 1121 after ruling for 50 years King Kedus passes on due to prolonged illness and the Kingdom of Abyssinia is inherited by his whimpering grandson King Kifle. King Kifle's reign is a short one and is remembered for two key decisions.

The first is elevating his brother and my uncle to be Duke of Axum. Why anyone was elevated to a voting position Is unknown…

dukew.png

However, he did have the Wisdom to nominate me, Sisay, as the First Queen of Abyssinia. I took over the realm at the age of 16 when my father died of illness after playing with sewer rats.

queensisay.png

My first action is to nominate my Uncle as Heir to the throne. This will make him loyal to me while I solidify my standings with the nobles. Luckily I am very eloquent and can easily convince my vassals of my value even if I am a woman....

The only better way to gain their trust is to follow in my Great-grandfather's footsteps and to crush the Shia. After a few years of consolidating I am able to raise an army of over 11,000 men if I include all of my vassals.

Even more importantly the latest Caliph is engaged in another war against the Byzantines
caliphbyzwar.png

Although they are winning I notice that they have recently suffered a huge loss and are down to an army of 3500 men.

Now is the time to declare war for Arabia Felix and finish off what my Father was too afraid to do..I will avenge our loss to the Shia over Arabia Felix and take Mecca and Medina from the Shia.

In the Spring of 1132 I declare a holy war. I Muster all of my troops and order them to lay wasteall the way up the East Coast of the Red Sea. I wait impatiently for news of my certain victory...

Chapter 4 – “Your ‘High’ness I don’t think Beku the Wise exists”

The first few provinces in Arabia fall to my forces. However, a Shia army comes south and defeats one force and scatters the rest. I pull back and regroup. The Pope senses that the Caliph is distracted and calls another Crusade for Jerusalem. Now the Caliph is fighting a Jihad against the Byzantines, and Defending against my Holy war and a crusade.
I regroup and relevy my armies. They form up and begin to siege more provinces.
The Caliph finally gets desperate and sends a small army south to engage my forces again. He has underestimated the speed at which my armies can break from a siege and pull together. The Shia’s small force is defeated and on July 6, 1135 I force the Shia to give me Arabia Felix .

1135lands.png

In addition to my new lands I gain a new advisor, Beku the wise.
AT first I thought maybe that Beku was my half sister, but that is just silly as she is in Austria.
halfsister.png

Beku and I go everywhere. Beku gives me advise on everything, plus Beku looks great in pink

pinkele.png

Beku adds to every decision I take and makes me much more liked by my vassals
possessedn.png

Eventually one of my counts tells me Beku does not exist…well as I am sure all of my other vassals agree I can’t have delusional people ruling in my lands so I send him off to the dungeon. He still likes me even though I have locked him up
jailtime.png

Beku and I spend the better part of the next 20 years playing in the Palace. My Uncle and Heir dies but I just choose his son to inherit because Beku likes him.

In 1152 Beku convinces me I should take Nubia from the Caliph since I have converted most of my new lands to my ways and the Caliph is still stuck fighting a crusade. I send Beku out in charge of the troops and they achieve victory after victory (well a portion of them do get slaughtered by a Mystery army that appears out of nowhere, but the Mystery army does not come back a second time).

In late July of 1153 the Exhausted Caliph is force to surrender more lands to me.
1153nubia.png

More importantly Beku comes back for more play time in the palace. I wonder what great idea we will come up with next.

Chapter 5 - Whatever your wish I will serve (and convert)
The year is now 1160. I’m not sure what my daughter keeps whispering to Beku… I don’t understand why my daughter is always the one interacting with my council and nobles now. My Faithful advisor Beku finally tells me that it is because she is my heir and has taken over running things while I play with Beku in the palace.

I try and argue but my daughter is very convincing

I’m also worried about beku as he keeps sneezing and wheezing…or is that me???

By October of 1160 my mother Sisay has passed away. I never do find out what happened to her friend Beku that she always talks about.

My first action is to crown myself Queen Ayana of Nubia. I imagine that with 3 Queen titles (Abysinnia, Arabia, and NUbia) my vassals and enemies will respect and fear me.

Something does not seem right within my kingdom. They do not seem to fear me as I expected.

My Kinsman, The Duke of Axum is seizing territories from his peers not only in Axum but also some in my kingdom of Arabia. I speak with my Nobles and they agree the Duke should hand over his extra provinces in Arabia to me. I send him a letter and strangely enough he does not agree and declares war on me. After 100 years of expansion I am faced with my country's first civil war.

Within two years I overwhelm the Duke and take several of his titles for myself and redistribute other lands to trusted allies.

The Shia have had a period of relative peace so I concentrate on the Arabs as they are very weak and have no allies. I begin grabbing provinces from them using my Queenship of Arabia as context.

By the end of 1181 I have taken two provinces from the hapless Arabs.
I mentor my Nephew into a great heir and future ruler of Abyssinia. He is everything anyone could want in a ruler(including being named after my Mother Sisay).

Even better my husband, who has converted to the true faith, is now heir to the throne of bohemia. Although, they have Seniority succession I feel it is my duty to kill the current King and get him on the throne. This succeeds and I am now married to a King in his own right!!!

Perhaps he will bring the true Monophysite ways to the HRE…

Chapter 6 - Skipping ahead

First I want to say sorry for skipping about 100 years of game play but I don't have the energy to describe everything (as I would rather start a new game).

The only eventful items other then my growth are the King of Bohemia being a Monphysite for awhile. However, he rebelled against the HRE and eventually lost.

I also put a relative on the throne of the Byzantine empire. This lead to lots of rebellions. Some revolts I helped put down, but the empire is pretty splintered.

Lastly, I expended and have almost burried the Shia Caliphate. At this point the game just feels like a churn to me as I can raise 100K+ in armies.

Here is my area of the map in 1286
