Then that thread some months ago about putting an explorer off the coast to increase the chances is a lie? :(

I haven't noticed that-certainly, once the colony is in place the explorer needs to be in port for the bonus effect to occur.

So it's a good idea to have the explorer in the adjacent sea province just before the colonist arrives, so you can send the next one a.s.a.p.

But having a conquistador (not explorer) in an adjacent province is the only way to find El Dorado. A normal military unit will not reveal the province.

If you've got nothing better to do with it! As England, admittedly, all post 1600 explorers should be as useless as this use implies, but for other nations.............

If you really want the bonus, I tend to use conquistadors once the coastal provinces are all revealed. Inland can wait for the appropriate technology and the completion of any "cordon sanitaires". I also tend to use them in India or SE Asia-as I said, absorbing all Java's natives is fun!

I see that hoary old "El Dorado" ghost story's popped up again....:)

Portuguese colonists

I play as Portugal but at very easy level though.
I find trading posts are good in the ivory provinces in Africa which are not worth colonising, they add to COT values in Tago. Also if you have enough colonies and TP's far from Europe there will be little competition although it is expensive to place your merchants.
TP's have two other nasty uses. Put a TP in a province full of hostile natives next to the territory of someone you are at war with, the AI will then invade to destroy your tade post which means they get to fight the natives, waste time on a useless excursion and suffer attrition. Good value for 5 ducats and worth the risk of natives destroying the TP.
Another nasty use is to place a TP to attract pirates near someone elses colonies.

That's brilliant! Evil, but brilliant!
