Well with the development of more and heavier plate armor crush weapons like maces and hammers became more and more popular given that swords sucked against plate.
You know of any sites that give a history of weapons? All I ever find is ones for sale.
The War hammers, spiked axes and all came about as the plates got thicker andstronger, but this early in the period it is not really an issue.. the idea of the hammer specifically is to break the bone beneath a chainmail without having o penetrate it first
I'm not so sure it was in use yet, the elaborate armours and their counters were not introduced until 1200-1300-1400.. but if you REALLY want to know there is a lengthy discussion in the OOC of book V or VI of the FC
Oh, and I've done a spot of spring cleaning, merging posts and so to avoid newcomers wading through tens of pages to get enlisted

Would a crusader carry more than one weapon?
They would likely be carrying both lance and dagger as well as sword, but it is unusual to be proficient with more than one weapon...
In fact something struck me, I'm not so sure knights fought with lances as much as charged with a general melee weapon?
At later points they surely used lances at charge weapons to be discarded once broken, but also this early?
