Not in the least....V, the knights HAVE to realize that fighting in the holy land is completely different than fighting in Europe. The Saracens are more than willing to run off on their much lighter horses and pepper the knights with arrows, drawing more and more of them away from each other before the turn at bay and wreak unbelievable havoc on the knights who are now separated from his fellows.
Yes, it is harsh, but Alexandre is going to be addressing the knights and showing them that the typical European style of fighting is not the way to do things in the Holy Land. Some toes might get stepped on, but you can't just go willy nilly into the Saracens...you get torn to pieces that way.
The Rum Seljuks did it to Barbarossa's army in reality, especially after his death. It is completely astounding that such a small amount of men from his army actually made it to the Holy Land...Whereas the IRON discipline used by the Kingdom of Jerusalem's knights defeated foes that outnumbered as much as 100-1.
Remember they never really had more than 300 knights at any one time<the KoJ, that is>, and yet they managed to take on,and in quite a few cases, WIN against overwhelming odds. Simply by being smart enough to adapt to the conditions of the terrain and their opponents.
You have to remember that du Kayne has spent quite some time in the Holy Land. He knows how to fight there. If he had been like everyone else in Europe now going on this crusade he would very likely have no problem, or desire to fight any other way.
Sure, it is going to make training the knights VERY difficult, but otherwise realistically we'd be cut to pieces in short order. The idea of our band is to be the best. We can't do that if we all charge however we want, at whatever speed we want, and in whatever direction we most feel like going. We have to be a team. A team capable of looking at long odds, spitting in the face of danger, and coming out the victor.
The Muslims of the time feel they have just as much right to the Holy Land as the Christians. They have the manpower, and the will to take it. Our jobs is to try and stop it and roll back the clock to save the KoJ and to save the Holy Land for Christians everywhere.
And remember, life during this period of time was more brutal than that depicted in the FC...life was cheaper, and yes it was still considered cheap compared to today in the FC's day, but this is a time where the Middle Ages were really in full swing.
Chivalry wasn't even truly invented yet. That was a concept, believe it or not, that Christians took from the SARACENS, and adapted for their own use. Was du Kayne harsh? You bet!
He is a harsh man living in a harsh world where his kingdom has been humbled and is in the fight of it's life against an enemy that is far more numerous than anything he can use to defend her. Yet he WILL fight, and he will train these crusading knights in the ways of warfare in the Holy Land.
The better he does, the more will stay alive and the more Saracens will be killed, and the closer he is to reaching his goal of saving his beloved nation. Would any other man do any less?
