Decades ago, the Pope called a crusade to liberate Jerusalem.

I, the Duke of Lombardy didn't care much, but then I got the crusader trait... which changed nothing.

But by 1109, the piety penalty on expectations was starting to hurt, dispite me being still only the Duke of Lombardy With Too Few Heirs.

An expedition was sent to the Holy Land all the same.

Surprise surprise, they liberated the Holy City and two more provinces - Jaffa and the one north of Jerusalem. And then my Nobility paid off all my debts!

Strange thing is, the crusade still stands. What gives? Is it because I'm not a King?

Just give it some time. Eventually the event to end it will kick in. Sometimes it happens within a month, sometimes it can take a few years. But eventually it will end.

Course, if you're unlucky... The Pope will call another Crusade within a few days.

The crusade event doesn't fire as soon as the conditions for it are met. It has a MTTH. To increase the chances of the event to fire, try and conquer all the lands surrounding Jerusalem or make sure they are in Christian hands. It seems rather silly for a crusade to keep going, but think of it like this: It has to be communicated to the pope that the holy land is freed and then he has to end the crusade, which will take some time.

I have had crusades end the month right after I conquered the intended province and nothing else and other times it took years when I even occupied all surrounding lands. Just hang in there ;)

You got bad luck, usually if no one cares about crusading the Pope calls off the crusade after some time. And now that you have conquered Jerusalem end of crusade should fire sooner or later. And like Slinky said conquering provinces next to Jerusalem helps. Also converting province of Jerusalem Catholic should make end of Crusade event more likely.

It got converted less than a week after the conquest, via a lucky event :)

Now, all I need is to actually be a King so it makes sense to go for the Kingdom of Jerusalem as well.

If your economy is hurting..

you could always go into your budget screen (a little chest in lower left) and lower your army support slider. This will hurt your troops but if they have friends on scene in the holy land then they can watch you back while you wait for his tardiness.
