Your brother is the only sane man left in Westeros. That was the only appropriate response.

A new verse needs to be written for our favorite song! I might take a crack at it.

CHAPTER XVIII - A FALCON SOARS

The extinguishing of House Lannister shocked the realm to its core. The Lannisters had been a noble house for as long as anyone could remember, and were easily the most powerful and influential house in the Seven Kingdoms after my great-grandfather was deposed. Now, they were nothing more than a fleeting memory, their last two living members left to watch helplessly from Castle Black as their line ended with them. Tywin Lannister had brought the house to the forefront of Westerosi politics, and it was well known that the, "children", of Robert Baratheon were Lannisters in truth. With one fell swoop, my brother changed all that, forever changing the landscape of the kingdoms. The Rains of Castamere was a song known and feared throughout Westeros, detailing the fall of House Reyne. Perhaps now, someday songs will be sung of the final days of House Lannister.

In his madness, my brother had now made himself an enemy of just about every highborn lord or lady in the Seven Kingdoms. Not a soul would dare call him friend, nor would they talk poorly of him in fear of what was to happen. In his own, mad way, he had solidified his grasp on the Westerlands, or so he thought. Not yet a year since the death of the last Lannisters, the lords of the Westerlands rose up once more, in what would surely be a futile attempt to usurp Maelor once more. This time, they rallied not behind a Lannister, but a Tyrell. Thought the Tyrells themselves- one of if not the strongest ally of my family- did not fight in the war themselves, it was one of their own that the lords of the Westerlands were looking to place on the seat at Casterly Rock.

Steffon Tyrell was the oldest son of Lord Willas, and as such was heir to Highgarden and the Reach. However, his mother was Lady Janei Lannister, and though not a Lannister by name, the blood of the lion flowed through his veins. This made Steffon Tyrell the rightful heir to Casterly Rock, on account that everyone forgot that it was by the king's decree that House Targaryen now presided over those lands. It was Lady Alyssane Lefford that lead the rebels in the Westerlands, and soon enough a vast number of lords followed suit in taking up arms against my brother. Time and time again, I had come to his aid- demanding this lord to stand down or secretly plotting to have that one killed- but now there was nothing that could be done for Maelor. After his act of lunacy many months ago, I had to leave him to his own devices, he was to reap himself what he had already sown.

62yvC0z.png

While the lords of the Westerlands rose up once more, others began to rally behind a different cause in the Vale. Lord Kyle Arryn, who had recently succeeded his father as Lord of the Vale, had declared war on Beron Stark for his claim on the North. As the son of Sansa Stark and the grandson of Eddard Stark, Lord Kyle had a claim on Winterfell, though not one that was as strong as that of House Stark. Believing himself capable of winning the North for his own cause, Lord Kyle had mustered an army and began marching North, hoping to meet the forces of House Stark in battle and secure himself the largest swathe of land in Westeros. Word also reached the capital from the Eyrie that Sansa Stark had been executed by her son. One could only assume that Lady Sansa was attempting to quell her son's ambitions, advising him to not take up arms against House Stark- her own family no less- an act that resulted in her death.

While one Stark drew their last breath in the Eyrie, another followed suit at Castle Black. Though not a Stark by law, Jon Snow was still the son of Eddard Stark, and the blood of the First Men flowed through his veins all the same. The year of my father's arrival in the Stormlands was the year that Jon Snow rose to the rank of Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. Thirty three years later- a long time to serve as Lord Commander- Jon Snow died of his advanced age and years of stress and conflict. The Night's Watch began searching for a suitable replacement to take on the role, and after some deliberation, Edmynd Wyl was elected as the 999th Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. A skilled warrior and competent leader, Lord Commander Wyl would no doubt serve the realm faithfully for many years to come.

uI0lwsu.png

The forces of House Arryn had already gathered and were now marching north with nearly thirty thousand foot soldiers and mounted knights. Since the War of the Five Kings, House Stark had been involved in various conflicts over the next three decades. They fought long and hard against the Lannisters before my father became king, they fought against the Riverlands in a futile attempt to reclaim the Neck from House Tully, and had fought a civil war to fend of the claim of a lady claiming to be the long-lost Arya Stark. Now, they faced a larger and fresher enemy in the form of House Arryn, and without the intervention of the crown, House Stark would surely suffer. Lord Beron is the son of Rickon Stark and the rightful ruler of the North. Though Kyle Arryn possesses a claim, it is not one that can justify usurping the title from Lord Beron.

With this knowledge at hand, I send word to Lord Kyle to stand down, to return home to the Eyrie and forget about his claim on Winterfell and the North. Not long after, a raven arrived in the capital carrying the Arryn lord's reply. Lord Kyle was to refuse my order to stand down, and made it clear that he planned on continuing his conflict with the North. I had not expected him to press the matter so much, but perhaps after the execution of his own mother I should have seen this coming. There was nothing more I could do, Lord Kyle had forced my hand. I branded Lord Kyle Arryn a traitor to the realm, and declared war against the Vale to bring him back to heel.

Make the bad men fly.

That might just be on the menu if they keep this up.

Another great house in the beginning of its destruction?

Hopefully not. Though destroying your enemies is fun, as a fan of ASOIAF in general, I don't like seeing these important families wither away.

Seriously, did someone put lead in the Lords drinking water? You'd think they'd all learn to stop agitating the dragon after what happened to Baratheon and Lannister.

Someone must have done. I'm really hoping I don't have to put House Arryn to the sword.

Arryns haven't earned extermination yet, but for starting an unnecessary war and committing matricide Lord Arryn at the very least deserves to be sent to the wall. If his heir happens to be young enough for King Rheagar to take him as a ward to teach him common decency then maybe he can be allowed to remain Lord of the Vale.

If his heir is equally despicable, well you have four princes, so you can always strip the Arryns of the Vale and entrust it to one of the younger ones. Maybe arrange for him to be betrothed to a Royce or Corbray to help with stability, though obviously he'd be slumming it. Then you'd have Targaryeans as wardens of east and west. Alternately you could raise up any one of Arryns vassals who declares for your side. Maybe you'll get lucky and one will be an Arryn of Gulltown.

I think it would be better, from now on, to raise local lords as was done with House Connington. As we've seen with Maelor, Targaryen blood is too usntable to trust anywhere outside of King's Landing, where tradition and experience has usually helped keep insane Targs out of the public eye.

Still, the Stag has been devoured, the Lion declawed, and now the Eagle's about to be plucked from the sky. Only the Direwolf seems to have learned to keep its nose to the ground.

Lord Kyle will be dealt with accordingly, should the crown prevail, that is. I think I mentioned it in one of the early chapters, but as Aegon I actually took on Kyle Arryn and Rhaegar as wards at the same time. Harrold Arryn was not a fan of King Aegon, and so I thought perhaps having Rhaegar and Kyle grow up together would strengthen relations between the crown and the Vale. It had the exact opposite effect, and made Rhaegar and Kyle heated rival, hence the immediate animosity between the two. I hope I don't have to destroy House Arryn, but these houses are really starting to test Rhaegar's patience.

I like the idea of raising lords I can trust, but I think I'd mix it with Deaghaidh's suggestion of wedding my numerous sons to lesser, more loyal houses. That way, I can ensure loyalty by placing a Targaryen in power, while hopefully appeasing the vassals of that region by having the rulers descend from local noble families.

As for House Stark, I feel that they're not necessarily keeping their nose to the ground as much as their just too preocuppied with other

CHAPTER XIX - A MYRIAD OF DECISIONS

The march to the Vale was entirely uneventful. Kyle Arryn had taken the bulk of his forces North many weeks ago, in his war against Beron Stark. With that, the southern-most mountain passes into the Vale were all but unprotected. By the time we were only a few days march from the Eyrie itself, word arrived from our allies to the North, that Kyle Arryn was dispatching half of his host to move south and strike against us. Though a formidable force that would be, it would ultimately be too few men to repel our forces and push us out of the Vale. With a war on two fronts, Kyle Arryn was forced to stretch his forces incredibly thin, and as a result, could not muster any significant offensive against either the crown of the Starks.

For our part, the war was largely devoid of action. Aside from a few minor skirmishes with small garrisons on the road to the Eyrie, there were no fighting men to stop our advances towards the seat of House Arryn. Now a day away from the Bloody Gate, the Eyrie was within reach, and with it, victory. However, the Bloody Gate was not so easily brushed aside. A few hundred men at the Gate could fend off a force of thousands, if they had the will to do so. With Lord Kyle's reinforcing army from the North only days away, we would soon find ourselves stuck between an army and the Bloody Gate. Even with our significant numerical advantage, such a scenario could only end in defeat. I thus made the decision to throw our full strength against the Gate, hoping that we could quickly overwhelm the defenders before reinforcements could arrive.

The night before we were to assault the Gate, another raven arrived at our camp from the North. A large Northern host had engaged Kyle Arryn near Winterfell, delivering a crushing blow to the Valemen. For the following days, they pushed the Valemen south, before finally engaging Kyle Arryn and his remaining forces at the town of Whitford. The Arryn lord was taken prisoner, and was apparently on his way to our location to face the King's justice. It was fortunate that word arrived when it did. Many men would have died against the Bloody Gate had it not been for the efforts of the Northmen. Now, it was Kyle Arryn's time to make a choice- bend the knee or be destroyed.

GrAnYPa.png

As a child, my father had intended to have myself and Lord Kyle grow up together, hoping that we would form a bond and thus strengthen relations between the crown and the Vale. For my part, I took my father's wishes to heart, and made the effort to create something out of nothing with Kyle, but he was having none of it. From a very young age, Kyle Arryn was stubborn and foolhardy. He was the heir to the Vale, and I the heir to the Iron Throne, but that never stopped him from thinking himself above me. As hard as I tried, Kyle Arryn had no interest in befriending me, and ever since has viewed me as a bitter rival.

Upon the arrival of his Northern escort, Kyle Arryn was brought before me to hear my judgement. Under normal circumstances, I would meet Lord Kyle before my officers and vassals, where all could bear witness to my judgement. However, the conditions in the Vale had been less-than hospitable, and in preparations for our return to the capital, we were hit with days of rain and storms. In the torrid weather, I had began to feel ill. At first it was a simple sweat, but over the last two days it had reduced my strength and stamina significantly. Leaving my tent for prolonged periods of time was a task unto itself. As such, I had Lord Kyle brought to my tent, where he would learn of his fate privately.

With me in the tent were two of my Kingsguard, my younger brother Maekar, and a man from the Wall. The recruiter was there waiting to take Lord Kyle to Castle Black, should I punish his treason by sending him to the Night's Watch. However, before anyone's arrival at our camp, I had made the decision to keep him imprisoned in the capital. Allowing him to bend the knee would be letting him off. Allowing him to leave for the wall would be letting him off. No, Lord Kyle had committed treason, and he would pay for his treason by wallowing in the capital's dungeons. With my decision made, Kyle Arryn was escorted to a cell and the man from the Night's Watch began making preparations for his return to Castle Black.

In his week or so at our camp, the recruiter- Karl- had taken to conversing with Maekar on a regular basis. It didn't take long before Maekar was completely enthralled by the honor and glory that accompanied serving with the Night's Watch. Maekar was still a boy, but already seemed dissatisfied with life as a prince. From an early age, Maekar knew he would never be king, and where many would be thankful for such a situation, this knowledge filled my brother with resentment. No doubt Karl had told him of the possibility of anyone- lord of lowborn- rising to the rank of Lord Commander of the order that so valiantly protected the realm from the outside world. It was when Karl was preparing to leave that Maekar approached me with a decision of his own. With my blessing, Maekar left with Karl, ready to start life anew as a brother in black.

szdzPAq.png

With Maekar's mind made up, we parted ways- Maekar heading North, and my own party making south for the capital. I sent a raven ahead of the party, to give word to my sister Olenna. As the customs of our family would dictate, Olenna was to wed Maekar when they both came of age. However, now with Maekar taking the black, I had to look elsewhere for a match for Olenna. I had decided that Steffon Tyrell would make a suitable husband for my sister. Steffon was the heir to Highgarden and the son of one of our most staunch allies. Not only was this a prestigious match, I had hope that it would convince Steffon that he had no need of the Westerlands. Currently, lords in the west were up-in-arms, hoping to place Steffon in Casterly Rock. Though the young Tyrell lad had no interest in ruling over the Westerlands, I had high hopes that my sister would be enough to keep him in that mindset.

HEvv7DM.png

We were only a week away from the capital by that point, and I was limited to remaining inside my carriage at all times. Where normally I would ride atop of horse at the head of the caravan, I hadn't the strength sit up straight, let alone ride. The warmth of the sun and the wind through my hair was replaced with four walls and a roof, muted sounds and stifled light. The kingsroad was one of the great marvels of man in Westeros, but even it had it's bumps and grooves. When on horseback these would prove hazardous, in a carriage they proved surprisingly soothing. It was difficult enough to keep my eyes open as it was, but the rocking of the carriage back and forth made it near impossible. With the light and sounds of the world shut off from me, I found myself slipping into a deep sleep. With what little strength I had left, I slid open the slat on the side of my carriage, and called out to the driver to wake me when we stop, but my words amounted to nothing more than a mumble. My eyes had grown heavy and my breaths were long and drawn out. I drew my breath, ready to make a second attempt at grabbing my driver's attention, but that action alone proved too much. My eyelids slid shut and I slipped into a slumber. Wake me when we stop, I thought.

Rotting in the black cells is a decent punishment, I suppose. Lacks a certain flair. But you can always call him to trial later. Wait until you eventually inherit one of Danys dragons if you fancy executing him, it gives you the option to feed them to the beast.

As for Rheagar's aparant death, we can't rule out poisoning by one of those extremely subtle and effective faceless men.

Hopefully it's only a mild illness. Wouldn't want Rhaegar kicking the bucket just yet.

Yeah, rotting in a cell isn't the best option, but I didn't want to give him the honor of a quick death or a quick reprieve, so it'll have to do for now.

As for Rhaegar's 'illness', I'm really hoping it's only that. That would be two kings in a row dying at the hands of the Braavosi assassins.

INTERLUDE - 336 AL

In the last days of his campaign in the Vale, King Rhaegar fell ill and never returned to the capital alive. Upon his return, the crown was passed to his young son, whom was crowned King Aemond Targaryen, First of His Name. Still a boy, the first few years of Aemond's reign would be overshadowed by the rule of his regent, Margaery Tyrell, and his Hand, Willas Tyrell.

THE IRON THRONE
Seat: King's Landing
House: Targaryen
Lord: King Aemond
Heir: Maelor Targaryen

King Rhaegar had left the capital months ago for his campaign against Lord Kyle of the Vale, and never returned alive. His eldest son, Aemond Targaryen, took up the crown in his thirteenth year. As such, a regent was required to help govern the realm until his coming of age. This role was given to the king's grandmother, Margaery Tyrell, and together with her brother, the Hand of the King, they were to govern the Seven Kingdom's in Aemond's stead.

DORNE
Seat: Sunspear
House: Martell
Lady: Prince Trystane
Heir: Bors Martell

For centuries, House Martell had ruled from Sunspear as Princes and Princesses of Dorne, that was, until they were supplanted by House Vaith. A decade after Obara Vaith had come into power, Trystane Martell- the last remaining heir of Doran Martell- waged war against the Vaiths and succeeded, with the bulk of the contributing force coming from Lord Lester Connington in the Stormlands. With their victory, House Martell was restored and the royal family regained one of their most loyal and powerful allies. Though House Martell and House Connington were both loyal vassals of House Targaryen, the two houses were allies through marriage, an alliance that could prove even stronger than the oldest of friendships. Should the South eventually turn against the crown, there would be little stopping a large host from marching directly on the capital.

The Reach
Seat: Highgarden
House: Tyrell
Lord: Lord Willas
Heir: Steffon Tyrell

Lord Willas Tyrell had now been Lord Paramount of the Reach for over three decades, and with the death of King Rhaegar, would now be serving his third Targaryen king. Originally serving as King Aegon VI's Master of Coin, he was made Hand of the King under King Rhaegar, and continued in this position into the reign of King Aemond. Alongside his sister, he now served as one of the two most powerful and influential figures in the Seven Kingdoms, guiding the young king and deciding upon the most important matters of the realm on his behalf. With the extinction of House Lannister, the Tyrells no longer had an alliance with a powerful family, beside that of the king, a fact that was undeniably beneficial to the crown. Lord Willas' son, Steffon, was being touted as the rightful claimant on the Westerlands, but as one of King Rhaegar's last acts, such thoughts were quelled by wedding Olenna Targaryen to Steffon, to stifle his already-low interest in Casterly Rock.

THE STORMLANDS
Seat: Storm's End
House: Connington
Lord: Lord Lester
Heir: Megga Connington

Lester Connington was only the second Connington to hold the title of Lord Paramount of the Stormlands, after his father had been so influential in helping Aegon VI win the crown three decades ago. Lord Lester succeeded his father upon his death a number of years earlier, and has remained as a close ally to the throne ever since. With little interest in the dealings of the other kingdoms, Lord Lester's most significant act as Lord Paramount was in placing Trystan Martell- the brother of his wife- on his rightful seat in Sunspear. Though Lord Lester had two children to his name, both were girls, and with every passing year the possibility of the Connington line ending grew greater.

THE WESTERLANDS
Seat: Casterly Rock
House: Targaryen
Lord: Lord Maelor
Heir: Rhaegar Targaryen

After years of troublesome activity, House Lannister was stripped of their lands and titles by House Targaryen, and the Lord Paramouncy was given to Maelor Targaryen, the second son of Aegon VI. After years of Lannister revolts and conflicts, Maelor snapped and put every last Lannister to the sword, gaining the ire of just about every lord in the Seven Kingdoms, including his own brother. With the Lannisters gone, the lords and ladies of the Westerlands had found a new man to rally around- Steffon Tyrell- as the rightful claimant to Casterly Rock. Yet another civil conflict was being wages in the west, though King Rhaegar had ensured that Steffon Tyrell would refuse the lordship of the Westerlands should the rebels prove victorious. With no children as of yet to his name, should Lord Maelor pass from this world, the Lord Paramouncy of the Westerlands would pass to King Aemond, whom would then no doubt give the seat to another member of his own house, in order to ensure continued loyalty.

THE RIVERLANDS
Seat: Riverrun
House: Tully
Lord: Lord Edmure
Heir: Harsley Tully

Edmure Tully had served as both Lord Paramount of the Riverlands and Master of Laws for many years now, and was beginning to show signs of advanced age and poor health. Many years ago, during his conflict with the Starks, his only sons were taken prisoner and were offered up as sacrifices to the twisted gods that Lord Rickon Stark worshiped. As such, Lord Edmure's heir was now his grandson, Harsley Tully- the only child of his eldest son, Hoster. Though the houses of Stark and Tully were once staunch allies, their recent conflicts ensured that a strenuous relationship between the Riverlands and the North would dominate proceedings in the northern lands for years to come.

THE VALE
Seat: The Eyrie
House: Arryn
Lord: Lord Kyle
Heir: Odron Arryn

Upon his father's death, Kyle Arryn became the new Lord Paramount of the Vale. Raised in King's Landing alongside Rhaegar Targaryen, King Aegon VI had intended to tutor the boys together to create a strong and lasting bond between the capital and the Eyrie. However, Kyle and Rhaegar clashed on many occasions, with the Arryn heir proving to be an arrogant and disrespectful man, in stark contrast to the Targaryen prince. A lasting rivalry was created, one that would eventually seal Kyle Arryn's fate. Declaring war for his 'claim' on the North, Kyle Arryn was branded a traitor to the realm and entered into conflict with the crown. The Arryn forces were defeated and Lord Kyle imprisoned. He was part of the caravan heading to the capital upon King Rhaegar's death, and would now spend years in the dungeons under Aemond I. With no sons to his name, should Kyle Arryn die, the Vale would pass to his younger brother, Odron Arryn.

THE NORTH
Seat: Winterfell
House: Stark
Lord: Lord Beron
Heir: Marlon Umber

The death of Lord Rickon Stark saw his son Beron take up his ancestral seat at Winterfell. Upon doing so, the Old Gods from beyond the Wall lost their footing in the North, and the lawlessness of their beliefs withered away. Beron Stark had taken the Seven as his own, something that would draw the resentment of some in the North, but the Starks command the loyalty of all but a few Northmen, and most would be able to overlook the difference in belief. After all, Catelyn Tully was taken in and considered one of their own after her marriage to Ned Stark, and she kept the Seven until the day she died. Beron Stark had been fighting a civil war against some of the lords of the North who were looking to put "Arya Stark" on the seat in Winterfell, but these rebels were eventually defeated. Their is cause for concern in the North however, as Lord Beron is yet to produce an heir. As such, the North would pass to Marlon Umber, the eldest son of Lord Berron's sister, Janessa Stark.

THE IRON ISLANDS
Seat: Nagga's Hill
House: Harlaw
Lord: Lord Erik
Heir: Urragon Harlaw

The Iron Islands had remained independent for a decade before being brought back into the Kingdoms during the early years of King Rhaegar's reign. Harras Harlaw was named Lord Paramount, but died shortly thereafter, with the title passing to his son, Erik. Erik Harlaw's rule over the Iron Islands remained largely uncontested, but King Rhaegar had seen fit to legitimize a Greyjoy bastard many years ago, a fact that could one day lead to turmoil in the region. Erik Harlawas not as foolhardy as his father, and seemed willing enough to remain as part of the Seven Kingdoms. However, with the death of his only son at a young age, governance of the Iron Islands would fall to Urragon Harlaw- Erik's only surviving brother- should Erik pass without any heirs. Urragon was still a boy, and should he come into power at such a young age, the Iron Islands could easily descend into chaos once more.

THE NIGHT'S WATCH
Seat: Castle Black
House: N/A
Lord: Lord Commander Edmynd Wyl
Heir: Ronald Bolling

The Night's Watch has remained relatively at ease during the reign of King Rhaegar. There was fear that Harmond Hornblower- the man who declared himself the new King Beyond the Wall- would invade, but nothing has ever come of it. With relative peace over the last twenty years, the Night's Watch has been able to grow in size, at least a little. Their numbers are improving and some of the castles are being re-garrisoned. It will no doubt take time to return the Watch to its former glory, but at least this is a start. After many long years as Lord Commander, Jon Snow passed away and Edmynd Wyl was elected as the 999th Lord Commander. A smart enough man, but far more skilled with a blade, Edmynd would no doubt be critical to the success of the Night's Watch, should a Wildling invasion ever occur.

BEYOND THE WALL
Seat: Hardhome
House: Varawolf
Lord: King Kyleg Hornblower
Heir: Harmond Marahorn

After the death of King Harmond, a man named Kyleg sieze the kingship beyond the Wall, and took the name 'Hornblower' too. While it seemed as though the Wall was under constant threat of invasion during the time of Harmond Hornblower, the Wildlings enjoyed relative peace under Kyleg. There were still minor disputed and conflicts, but none on such a scale as to fracture the fragile kingship that exists in the icy lands north of the Wall. With little activity occurring, and few reports of imminent threats being received from the Night's Watch, there is little else to say regarding the so-called Kingdom Beyond the Wall.

ESSOS

Essos has little to do with the Seven Kingdoms anymore, with trade being the only real interaction between the two continents. Khal Mago still commands a large Khalasar in the center of the Dothraki Sea, while Khal Pono has expanded his lands by quite a margin. Khal Zekko was defeated some years ago, and one of his bloodriders- Dan- has begun to carve out his own Khalasar in the remnants of Zekko's. The Free Cities remain largely unchanged, and Slaver's Bay has not stirred for some time. Daenerys Targaryen still rules as Queen in Meereen, but long ago abandoned her hopes of conquering the Seven Kingdoms. Now a feeble old lady, her last years will no doubt be spent preparing her son to succeed her as the ruler of Meereen, and ensuring her dragons are kept under her family's control upon her passing.

A regency on the Iron Throne... Still hopefully everyone will stay loyal to Aemond who seems to be turning into a second conquer.

The boy king looks like he'll be quite the badass. Lvl 4 personal combat skill, plus Blackfyre. All he's missing is a dragon. Maybe when he's grown he could take a trip to visit his great-great aunt? Iirc he only needs to be in the same province as a wild dragon to attempt to tame one. Dany has Drogon, her bastard Rheagal, but that should mean Viserion is still at large. Not to mention any hatchlings from their eggs.

And Margerey is now the new Queen of Thornes. She's clearly the powerful personality responsible for the success of the Targaryean Restoration.
