If he weren't in the Kingsguard, I'd suggest giving the Stormlands to Daemon. Hopefully he'll at least get a dragon egg.

yeah, give some branches of your House power and lands seems a good idea for civil wars

Yeah, giving siblings power has worked so well in the past. :p

Speaking of a relative getting a dragon, though. I failed to mention it in the chapter, (didn't see an appropriate place to fit it in), my brother did hatch an egg during those events. He's LP of the Westerlands and Hand of the King, so that might bring about some... excitement, in the future.

Well now, the Conningtons finally made you snap. And not too soon, with that war to take both and all.

So will you be removing them from Dorne as well? Or are you hoping that that branch will be too burnt out for destabilising Westeros?

I've been so patient with these people. First the Arryns, now the Conningtons. I've just about had enough. :p

Perhaps my writing confused it a bit, but the Conningtons don't actually have any power in Dorne. The Martells still control Dorne, but is seems that just about every Martell child has a claim on the Stormlands, and every Connington has a claim on Dorne. With the Conningtons looking Dornish and the Martells looking Andal, it's all gotten a bit confusing as of late. :p

Needless to say, the Conningtons are in trouble.

What a frightening proposition. I did it once and it turned out poorly, for a while, I think I'll hold out on doing it again for at least a little bit.

CHAPTER XXXIX - A ROOST NO MORE

Our armies were split in two for the march against the Conningtons. Aerys took nearly fourteen thousand men with him to Duskendale, from where he would sail the Royal Fleet south into Shipbreaker Bay, to cut off Storm's End from any aid. I took the remaining men, slightly less than eleven thousand, and marched directly south, with Aerax at my side. The Conningtons had overstepped their bounds one too many times, and would soon pay for their transgressions. Thirty long years as king had soured my soul. I yearned for Blackfyre to feel the taste of their flesh, I ached for the screams of burning men, roasting under Aerax's immense heat. Two sides of a coin, I thought. That is what they said of the Targaryens- madness, or greatness. Yet, here I was, at the end of my resolve, showing that perhaps our fates were not so simple... Perhaps we had the propensity for both great and terrible deeds locked inside of us.

I got the chance to bury my sword into my enemies at Slumberhall, not two moons after the rebellious Lord Gunthor made his intentions known. The Conningtons had mustered a large army, larger than our own, and so the deployment of Aerax was a necessity. After a few hours of fighting, I unleashed the great beast, and the Stormlanders soon saw the error of their ways. Rising high and diving low, Aerax tore at his enemies, charred their flesh, and hurled them into the sky. Their screams at the sight of the dragon were enough to send a tremble down any man's spine, but the screams of their deaths? Those were special, those were truly haunting. By the day's end, we proved victorious, though both of our armies lost nearly half of their full strength in the fighting. The Stormlanders retreated, no doubt to regroup, while we waited on reinforcements from the north, from Aerys.

faiHMKJ.png

However, those reinforcements were not to come. Apparently seeking to seize an opportunity amidst chaos, the Free City of Myr declared war against the Iron Throne, seeking to claim a city they believed was rightfully theirs. In truth, I did not even know the city. Drakebridge, it was called, some small city in the Crownlands, apparently claimed by the Magister. Even though it was a paltry city, it was our city... my city. The Myrish landed their armies on Crackclaw point, and so I had no choice but to send Aerys there to deal with the threat. I ordered a further five thousand men to be raised to aid him. Hopefully it would be enough to throw the Myrish back to their own lands, never to return.

With Aerys set to task, I returned my focus to Gunthor Connington. His army was broken, and now only its scattered remnants remained. Some four thousand men had fled east, while another two thousand pushed towards Storm's End, no doubt seeking solace behind their lord's high walls. However, the strain of battle wore on them, and we caught up to them soon enough. Near Grandview, our force of eight thousand crashed against them like the very waters of Shipbreaker Bay against the cliffs beneath Storm's End. For every one of their men, we had four, an advantage that made Aerax surplus to what we needed to secure a victory. The battle was short, and the battle was bloody. Almost all of their men died that day, while only a few hundred of our own men fell. Their armies utterly crushed, all that stood between me and Lord Gunthor were the walls of Storm's End. Justice is coming.

ejVDhE7.png

If there was one thing I could commend Lord Gunthor on, it would be his stubbornness, even in the face of defeat. Our army sat outside the walls of Storm's End for nearly two moons before we gained the keep. Even under the constant threat of dragonfire, Lord Gunthor did not waver, though I'm sure many inside the walls did. A part of me wanted to burn the keep to the ground, but Storm's End was the key to the Stormlands, as Winterfell is the key to the North, and Highgarden to the Reach. Such an impregnable keep helped to keep the Stormlords in check, but as also seemingly bolstered the bravado of it's occupants. Sixty years ago the Targaryens counted the Conningtons as their greatest allies in the realm. It was Aegon VI that made them Lords of Storm's End all those years ago. It seemed that with the passing decades however, that the very nature of their seat was enough to sway them from our side, making them into a bitter enemy- one that was about to be brought low once more.

When a dragon sits outside their walls for two moons, even the most stubborn of lords can lose faith. Lord Gunthor- wisely- dipped his banners shortly into the new year, and surrendered Storm's End, and himself, to me. Their little rebellion was over. House Connington would never again feel as if they could challenge the dragon kings, and would never feel any semblance of power, ever again. Lord Gunthor was brought before me, defeated and dejected. I had the man placed in chains. He was still young, perhaps it was his youth that made him believe he could oppose me. Whatever it was, his confidence was misplaced, and now he found himself at the end of my wroth.

At the base of the walls of Storm's End, the banners were fluttering in the wind, and the quiet hum of background chatter and the whinnying of horses could be heard from all around. Many knights and lords had gathered around to see the rebellious Lord Connington brought before the King, no doubt eagerly waiting to hear what judgement would be cast. I'm sure many were silently calling for his death, even I was, but there were more pressing concerns to deal with. The Conningtons were defeated, and the Myrish were now landing on our shores. A decently-sized army had landed in Crackclaw point, but another had now taken up a position on Dragonstone. If left unchecked, thousands more of the Myrish soldiers could flow into the Seven Kingdoms, and that could not be allowed.

1facNVU.png

And so, the eager crowd would have to wait for justice... true justice, to be served. I proclaimed Lord Gunthor a traitor to his King and to the realm, and ordered him to the dungeons in King's Landing, where he would await his fate, once the Myrish invaders were dealt with. Then, and only then, would House Connington reap what they had sown.

I'm soooo late to this party but I wanted to tell you that I've greatly enjoyed this AAR. Can't wait to see what happens next!

Thanks man, I appreciate every person who reads this, regardless of when they started. I am honestly gobsmacked that this dumb little thing is slowly climbing it's way up to some of the most-viewed AARs ever. I mean, why the hell has this been read 50,000 + times? Madness. Thanks to you, and everyone else. <3

And I hope what happens next is as good as what has happened so far. If I can add a bit of perspective, if I had to guess, I think I might be only slightly past the halfway mark in terms of this AAR's length. Many, many more chapters to go. :)

Firstly, I found this timeline after looking around for anything in the AAR section involving the Aztecs. I started reading from the beginning, but became curious how things went so I went ahead and read the chapters detailing them.

I do have some interesting questions in regards to them. Firstly, did they manage to convert any of the provinces they captured? Secondly, do you (or anyone reading this) happen to know if the Aztec received special flavor events for taking certain counties?

Being a big fan of the Aztec, I'll freely say I'm a bit sad they didn't do better, though as I remember reading it didn't seem like Dragons were doing much. Wonder if that'll change in future updates or if it already has.

That said, it would be interesting to know if any of Aztec Courtiers still exist in the realms... be even more interesting if they somehow managed to keep their faith and culture long enough somehow to try and usurp a title.

They weren't in Westeros long enough to convert any provinces, no. As for special flavor events, I personally don't know. I've never played as them, so I can't say what type of 'pop ups' they receive.

And no, no Aztec courtiers exist in the realm. Sunset Invasion was something I had never really thought about having turned on in my game, so when it activated I was genuinely angry. I dealt with them, and then I... culled them. Went and found every single courtier remaining that held their culture and religion, and used the console to end them. NO THANK YOU. :D

Ah, that's no fun :p They could have made things interesting in the future. But oh well.

Well, regarding the pop ups, I was more referring to something like what happens if the Aztec, for example in the regular game, conquer Middlesex. A flavor event pops up for everyone (or at least Christian realms as well as the Aztec) that says they offered up 50 virgins to their gods at a newly constructed temple pyramid (they get one for capturing Egypt as well, declaring the anicnet Pyramids to be a new holy site for pilgrimage). Wasn't sure if anything like that popped up or not in the AGoT mod.

At least you went ahead and played with them in the game. I'm sure there would have been some who would have said "Nopenopenopenope" and just tried to find a way to erase them (or would have restarted from a save before then with the DLC turned off)

Still, enjoying reading this even with the roflstomped Aztec.

Why hello there, you're all looking lovely this evening!

Just posting to say this isn't dead, I've just had a bit of a lull in my desire to write recently. Hopefully I should have a chapter up in the next day or so. :)

Sorry it's been so long. Life.

CHAPTER XL - GIVE NO QUARTER

With Lord Connington on his way to the dungeons under the Red Keep, our focus shifted entirely to the Myrish invaders. They had landed in smaller forces in Crackclaw Point, and almost immediately recognized their folly. Perhaps attempting to catch many a holdfast by surprise, it seemed that the Essosi underestimated the strength of the Westerosi castle. Not one gave in to the poor attempts at sieges by the Myrish, and after a few short weeks, our armies marched past the capital and north towards the Point, an act that seemingly sent the invaders into a fright. Seeing an army of twenty thousand marching down towards them, most of the Myrish forces pulled pack and regrouped on Dragonstone, while a few thousand remained behind to claim Claw Isle. Why they had chosen Claw Isle of all places, I did not know, but they would soon be cut off from their allies, and all but destroyed.

The Myrish had been using multiple small fleets to shuttle their armies across the Narrow Sea. It was effective at quickly moving their troops, but when faced with the Royal Fleet, it was utterly disastrous. They had no choice but to sit and accept their slaughter, having isolated themselves at Brizand Port, the Royal Fleet - carrying our army - confronted them and defeated them with next to no issue. This left the four-to-five thousand Myrish soldiers stranded, unable to escape the island. However, rather than surrunder - which seemed the logical option, the Myrish chose to stand and fight. Perhaps this stemmed from a greater fear of their slave masters than of us, but they would soon learn the error of their ways.

It was a short but brutal battle. Aerys led the vanguard down the center while I took command of the left flank. The Myrish spears down the middle held the longest, but with their line stretched thin, they began to waver. Eventually, we broke through on either flank and circled around to the middle, enveloping them. With no choice but to fight to the last man, the Myrish did just that. It was a slaughter. At the day's end, a little over one hundred were injured and taken prisoner, while the other five thousand were killed. In total, we lost less than two hundred soldiers, though another two hundred were injured. With the small force on Claw Isle defeated, that left only the force on Dragonstone to deal with. Though numbering nearly fifteen thousand, our army still outnumbered them by nearly ten thousand. It would surely be more than enough to push them from our lands entirely.

14n444t.png

Our forces landed on Driftmark with half of the Royal Fleet, to recover from the fighting at Claw Isle for a short while, before travelling to Dragonstone to deal with the Myrish. The other half of the Royal Fleet went directly to Dragonstone, to defeat their remaining fleet and blockade the island. With a short recuperation on Driftmark, who provided an extra two thousand men of their own, we made the short voyage over to Dragonstone. Aerys himself led the army again, this time fighting for his own lands and titles. It would be almost impossible for the Myrish to stop him, and should he choose to use Daerax in the fighting, the outcome would be devastation.

The Myrish army was encamped around the castle of Dragonstone when we met them. Having failed to take the castle, they would now be caught between its walls and our army. Once again, the Myrish refused surrender, and instead faced annihilation with either sheer bravery or utter stupidity. Aerys, enraged by the foolishness of the Myrish, needlessly causing war on his lands, took full control of the army, though in honesty, it wasn't the army that caused the majority of the damage. Aerys took to the skies with his dragon and descended upon the Myrish. Trapped between the walls of Dragonstone and a wall of pikes, thousands were bathed in Daerax's flames. The screams of agony echoed through the island, and before long they were destroyed.

A few thousand managed to escape to Driftmark somehow, while some others escaped further north, the very tip of the island. Aerys hunted them down, first to Driftmark, where he defeated them twice again, and at the port city of Derlyn. Ser William of Tyringham, a knight of the Kingsguard, had died there. With those on Driftmark defeated, the few thousand on Dragonstone were taken care of. Many weeks ago, twenty thousand Myrish soldiers had landed in Westeros, and now, almost all of them were dead. Three hundred of our own men died in total. Over sixty slave soldiers died for every one of ours. It was an astounding victory, and all of the credit would go to Aerys, who commanded our forces to great effect.

eLXjJZ2.png

Before long, the Magister of Myr sent a letter, declaring his surrender after the defeat of his forces. I was of a mind to accept it - the invaders had been pushed out of our lands, and had suffered such a humiliating defeat, that it was unlikely they would return any time soon. However, Aerys had other plans. Myr had for a long time been a trade partner of the Seven Kingdoms. We had purchased their goods and traded with them for centuries. No more. Aerys demanded something be done, and he took it upon himself to bring a swift end to hostilities.

A kingdom-wide decree was made - all Myrish ports in the Seven Kingdoms were to be burned to the ground. An embargo would be placed on the Free City, and Aerys would travel there to personally enforce it, with forty thousand men at his back... and one dragon. Myr was a grand city and it would take a great many men to take it by force, but luckily beasts of the sky were far more effective in that regard. Atop Daerax, Aerys burned the city at will. Inns, manses, markets, they all burned in the heat of dragonfire. Before long, Aerys landed directly at the palace of the magister. Under threat of literal consumption, the magister ceded to Aerys, and ensured that Myr would no longer be a nuisance to the Iron Throne. With Daerax staring him down, what other choice did he have?

9kvHDVh.png

Victory over the Myrish came swift and brutal. Though most in the Seven Kingdoms had never even known an invasion was underway, there were still those in the Crownlands who had witnessed the destruction of the enemies invading their lands. Aerys would receive all of the credit for the victory. He was quickly proving himself to be a formidable battle commander, and a solid leader. He would make a fine king one day. To celebrate the victory, I called for a tourney to be held in King's Landing. It would serve to celebrate the soldiers who had so effectively put the Myrish to the sword, and Aerys himself, the Prince of Dragonstone, who had led them to such a glorious victory. The Free Cities would think twice about assaulting the Seven Kingdoms in the future.

That was one scorcher of a war, though it wasn't even a challenge in the end.

You think that you're a bit too dominant in this game at present?

Yes. I mean, the reason Aerys has been leading the armies as of late isn't because I want him to, but because it means that I'm not. Makes it slightly more challenging, albeit very minutely.

With one dragon comes many, and we're starting to see that. It only makes things easier for me, until somehow they all turn on me and use them against me, then I'll have a real challenge. :D

So, in 2016 is a great dragon war? Can't wait to see that. :p
