Pfft, Sweden! Long live Denmark! My ancestors are from Denmark.

And without further adue, the next update.

The Crown of Europe
Chapter 9
1866-1872

In April of 1868 in it became evident that the United States of America was in deep econmic and military trouble. The state formerly known as Utah, declared it's independence from the Union. The United States declared war on Desert, but quickly found itself in a disadvantage. By the end of 1868, the United States signed a peace treaty returning the nations to status quo.

In that time the United States began looking for new allies, King Christian IX willingly accepted. Although the Danish Empire would not become an offical ally of the United States, 20 million pounds (20,000 in game) would be sent to Denmark. The United States military was to be trained in the latest European tactics, along with it's bankers being taught the latest in econmic practices.

The pretext for war presented itself when the throne of Spain was offered to a prince of the house of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen, a branch of the ruling house of Prussia. The offer, at first accepted on Bismarck’s advice, was rejected on July 12, 1870 after a strong French protest. However, the aggressive French foreign minister, the Duc de Gramont, insisted on further Prussian assurances, which King William I of Prussia refused. Bismarck, by publishing the famous Ems dispatch, inflamed French feeling, and on July 19 1870, France declared war on Prussia.

The nation of Italy and the Czarist Russia would join the Prussians in their quest to defeat the French. The United Kingdom, Spain, Austro-Hungarian Empire, and the Danish Empire would remain neutral.

6570.jpg

The outset of war. The French only had a defensive pact with the Ottoman Empire.

While other European powers wished to further extend their colonial boundaries, our nation was differnt. The colony of Brunei was to be the only Scandinavian settlement outside of the Northen Hemisphere. On July 7th, 1870 the world offically recongized the final act of colonization of Brunei.

7771.jpg

The colony of Brunei.

The combined forces of Italy, Prussia and Russia was thought to be enough to defeat the military might that is France. However the Czar was feeling quite reluctant to fully commit to a war aganist France. By November 7th, 1870, French troops had rolled into two Prussian provinces and one Italian province.

11770.jpg

The French offensive.

After a year and a half of extensive military training and new econmic practices, the United States of America declared war upon the rebel nation of Desert. The war began on December 12th, 1870, less than two weeks later, the annexation was complete.

Over the winter months of late 1870 and early 1871, the French offensive continued in Western Prussia. King Christian IX saw this as a spelndid oppurtunity. A game of diplomatic cards was in store. Diplomats quickly left for St. Petersburg, Russia and Rome, Italy.

22071.jpg

The progress of the French offensive.

The Czar would agree not to declare war on us if we declared war on Prussia, Italy however would be a differnt story. The Italians would not betray the lost cause that is Prussia. On March 24th, 1871, the Danish parliament declared war on Prussia and Italy.

22071.jpg

The outset of war, again.

Our generals had prepared for the Germanic nations to come to the aid of Prussia. It would become the case in the spring of 1871, for the first time our true fortifications could be used aganist the Prussians. With our eastern flank secure, the western offensive could begin in earnest.

52471.jpg

The beginning of the offensive aganist Hannover.

Copenhagen recived it's first of many documents on July 11th, 1871. The Germanic nation of Bremen had accepted the annexation of itself into the Danish Empire.

71171.jpg

The annexation of Bremen.

August 20th, 1871 saw how desperate the Germanic nations were at an attempt for peace. Oldenburg sent several documents to Copenhagen in hopes for peace, all of them were rejected.

82071.jpg

Peace, pfft!

September 1st, 1871 the nation of Hannover sent it's first offer to peace to King Christian IX. Peace was not desired aganist Hannover.

9171.jpg

Peace, pfft!

On the same day, Oldenburg was incorporated into the Danish Empire. The homeland of the previous Danish kings was once again part of Denmark.

9171Annexed.jpg

Oldenburg is annexed!

A major gap occured in our defensive lines as troops were shifted across our 'vast' holdings. The Prussians took advantage of our defensive blunder and occupied one province with 36,000 troops. In response, 46,000 Danish troops continued their march towards Munster.

21272.jpg

The march towards Munster and the defensive blunder.

The French offensive in Western Prussia had slowed down and began to lose ground. By April of 1872, the French offensive was hopeless. On April 8th, an army was spotted near the town of Elberfeld, it turned out to be the French army, 58,000 strong. Also on this date, the offensive to knock Hannover out of the war began with 24,000 Danish troops advancing towards the city of Hannover itself.

4872.jpg

The Elberfeld Surprise and March on Hannover.

The Battle of Hannover would of turned into a disaster for the 24,000 Danish soldiers hadn't an additional 24,000 soldiers arrived. Thirty-six thousand Germans came to defend the city of Hannover, and by July 7th of 1872 that number had dwindled down to 13,000.

7772.jpg

The battle of Hannover.

Seven Prussian divsions, numbering atleast 12,000 soldiers each, began a march towards the city of Lüneburg in the Germanic nation of Hannover. The Prussians were finally going on the offensive! To intially met the Prussians were three crack Danish divsions, it was believed this would not be enough to hold back the Prussians. Four divsions were recalled from the offensive and sent towards Lüneburg. When the arrived, the had caught the Prussians in a disastour spot. The Prussians backs were to them! A slaughter ensued, 60,000 Prussians were killed, the rest were captured or fled.

81772.jpg

The Battle of Lüneburg.

The back of the Germans was broken at Lüneburg. Hannover sent another plea for peace, which was rejected by King Christian IX and the Parliament.

101072.jpg

Peace, pfft!

102372.jpg

October 23rd, 1872, the Germanic nation of Lippe-Detmold was annexed into the Danish Empire.

The Prussian back, although broken was not yet defeated. A new offensive was called upon, one that would truly break the back of the Prussian army.

111772.jpg

The beginning of the offensive, November 17th, 1872.

Peace agreements were finally reached upon in Copenhagen, on Danish terms. Prussia was to be spared any land loss, but was to pay war indemenites to us for three years. Hannover would suffer the most; three of it's provinces were annexed into the Danish Empire; war indemenites were to be paid to us for three years.

122972.jpg

Peace at last!

Danish soldiers could now go home.

The Crown of Europe
Chapter 10
1873-1878

Following the last war with Prussia, the reconstruction of the provinces began. New factories were being built, imrpoved rail lines and expanded farms.
In 1873, the decaying Ottoman Empire ran into another road bump. The nation of Cyprus declared it's independence from the Ottoman Empire and quickly found itself in a war.

112973.jpg

The newly founded Cyprus.

Serbia and Montengero decided to take advantage of the weakened Ottoman Empire and declared war aganist them. The Czar, hoping to claim the Balkans for Russia, allied with Serbia and Montengero.

82876.jpg

Europe in turmoil...again.

Prussia, eager to claim new glory, declared war on Russia. The Czar asked for our help, King Christian IX quickly agreed to help the Czar, the Danish Empire would be going to war with Prussia...again.

10699.jpg

The new outlook of Europe at war.

Four divsions numbering 44,000 soldiers, would march south towards Munster were an expected 10,000 to 12,000 Prussians waited. Eight divsions would hold north of Munster, incase reinforcements would be needed.

9176Attack.jpg

The battle plan.

With the Prussian defenses in Munster broken, the dam had been broken. One hundred and twenty thousand Danes would enjoy the playground that is Western Prussia. The grand army of 120,000 split into two seperate forces, one headed towards Kleve, the other towards Minden.

92276.jpg

The next phase.

With Minden secure, and Kleve secure, the 12,000 Prussians thrown back once again, the advance could continue. Koln was now under siege, meanwhile scouts reported the 12,000 Prussians headed towards Kleve in hopes of regaining the province.

101876.jpg

October 18th, 1876.

While the Prussians were busy with retaking the province of Kleve, the Grand Danish Army surronded them, there was no escape. On November 12th, 1876, the Danske Heeren moved towards Siegburg, while the other army moved towards Kleve.

111276.jpg

November 12th, 1876.

In the very late part of December, Prussian loyalists began uprising in the occupied provinces. Meanwhile the last two provinces saw Danish troops enter them, there was no recordable Prussian resistance.

122276.jpg

The fall of Western Prussia.

The Russians had were having mixed results with the Prussian Army. While we were facing an estimated 10,000 to 12,000 Prussians, with additional amounts along our fortified border. The Russians were facing upwards of 200,000 to 300,000 Prussians.

31777.jpg

An overview of the Eastern Front, March 17th, 1877.

By March the Grand Army had traveled to our border with Eastern Prussia, where the next offensive would take place. Seventy-thousand Danish troops marched towards a heavily defended Prussian location where an expected 20,000 to 22,000 Prussians waited.

32677.jpg

Attack on Eastern Prussia.

The Prussians offered a little fight, killing a few thousand Danes while suffering the same amount of deaths. Prussian forces now had a new threat, their defense line had been broken and Berlin was less than 100 miles away from the Grand Danish Army.

41977.jpg

April 19th, 1877.

Prussia, in hopes of sparing Berlin of another occupational force, sent a plea to Copenhagen. Two Prussian provinces, Minden in Western Prussia and Wittenberge in Eastern Prussia would become Danish. This was unacceptable! The reasons for the war with Prussia was to secure Western Prussia for the Danish Empire. Western Prussia produced coal, a much needed resource in the Danish industry.

While the Russians faired with mix results aganist Prussia, the Ottoman Empire proved to be little of a match.

62577.jpg

Russian advance into the Ottoman Empire, June 25th, 1877.

July 7th, 1877 saw Danish divsions entering the Baltic province of Kolberg, further spreading the Prussian defensive forces. Within less than a week the Danish forces left Kolberg as Prussian divsions were seen marching towards the main city. With the bait taken, the march towards Berlin could begin. And so it did on July 25th, 1877.

72577.jpg

July 25th, 1877.

Prussia, still eager to spare Berlin of another occupation sent a plea to Copenhagen.

91377.jpg

The plea to Copenhagen, DENIED!

Berlin saw the incoming Danes with no resistance. No Prussian troops were within the city or the surronding farms. By November 11th, the Danish Army had left Berlin, being garrisoned by 10,000 young soldiers.

111177.jpg

The new offensive, November 11th, 1877.

The Prussian government still desperate with peace sent another plea to Copenhagen. With Berlin in Danish hands, the Prussians were more willing to give up land. However they were not the desireable provinces. So the war would continue.

122977.jpg

Another Prussian plea.

A peace treaty was offered to Prussia, who would secede the majority on Western Prussia to Denmark. The government quickly refused such a peace deal. It looked as if the Prussians needed more of a convincing reason to give over Western Prussia.

22178.jpg

The convincing reason, the renewed offensive.

March 29th, 1878 saw the peace restore the Prussian and Danish lands. The majority of Western Prussia now belonged to Denmark. The Danish industry gave three cheers as a great source of coal had been found. Although coal would still need to be imported from other nations, not was much would need to be imported.

32978.jpg

The Danish Empire's holdings in Europe.

The Crown of Europe
Chapter 11
1881-1885

The war hadn't devasted the miltary might that is The Great Northern Empire. Our Finnish brothers remained under the Russian tyranny, our military was in no shape to take on Russia. So, on November 11th, 1881, 10 new divsions were to be trained.

111281.jpg

Ten new divsions, German and Danish cultures.

The year of 1882 would roll around in eventual time. The ten new divsions remained ready for a moments notice of deployment. Meanwhile, the civilized African nation of Eygpt found itself at war with the British Empire.

61382.jpg

Egypt vs the British Empire!

In September of 1882, Prussia, disappointed in it's failures aganist us, declared war on a weaker Austro-Hungarian Empire. Italy joined in on the war aganist the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

11027.jpg

Prussia and Italy vs the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

The Netherlands grew jealous of our expanding empire. On October 21st, 1882, the declaration of war reached Copenhagen. The Netherlands had declared war aganist the Great Northern Empire.

102182.jpg

The Netherlands vs The Great Northern Empire.

An advance was quickly made into our territory, 36,000 Dutch soldiers marched into Munster only defended by 24,000 Danes.
111082.jpg

Danish and loyal German forces quickly mustered among the border with The Netherlands. In the early days of November 1882, our offensive began. Forty-eight thousand soldiers began marching into the southern parts of the Netherlands.

111682.jpg

The Southern Offensive.

A new offensive would begin shortly. Fourty-thousand cavalry men would advance into the northern provinces of the Netherlands. Meanwhile the southern offensive would continue, with the final objective of Amsterdam.

12182.jpg

The Northern Offensive.

The Battle of Munster was becoming a disaster for the Dutch. Nearly all of the Dutch Army was seen advancing towards the city of Munster. The road to Amsterdam had been opened by Dutch stupidity and not military might.

121982.jpg

The road to Amsterdam.

The new year, 1883, would see the Dutch Army at Munster surronded by the numerical superiority of our army. Additional Dutch forces had been cut-off from their supply lines and means of escape.

11283.jpg

January 12th, 1883.

A glorious moment occured in late Febuary, the Dutch forces located in Europe had all been defeated. The road to Amsterdam truly was an open road.

22883.jpg

Febuary 28th, 1883.

A peace agreement was sent to Copenhagen, which was quickly thrown into the fireplace of King Christian IX. The offensive continued into Amsterdam, which was occupied by our forces. The last resistance of the Dutch occured in a northern provinces.

11039.jpg

May 2nd, 1883.

The Prussians signed a peace treaty with the Austro-Hungarian Empire and Austria ceded land to the Prussians. Meanwhile the Italians continued to fight aganist the Austro-Hungarian Empire. In 1884, recruits rallied to the Great Northern Empire's flag.

The year of 1885 would see little happening in the Great Northern Empire, the industry was expanding, the people were populating. The Ottoman Empire would join with Italy in their war aganist the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

TekcoR,

Wow! This is moving fast... hard to keep up.

I'm up to 1866, and I'm very impressed with your "handling" of Prussia on numerous occasions, and your unification. Coming along quite nicely!

I only used the French to my advantage on a number of occasions. In all my games of Victoria, I usually see Prussia with the higher military score than France. This time though, France had the higher score than Prussia, not just by two or three points, but by a good 25 points.

The game has been played to 1903, an empire has been defeated. I'm thinking of stopping the AAR in 1903, as the last 17 years aren't really worth playing in my opinion. (You will understand once you get to 1903 in the AAR).

The Crown of Europe
Chapter 12
1886-1894

The year of 1886 saw several key worth changes in Europe and around the world. As empires crumbled, new ones rose from their ashes. With Prussia on the decline, the Austro-Hungarian Empire struggling to stay alive. The Ottoman Empire rebuilding itself, France reclaiming it's great Napoleonic domincane.

After the last war with Prussia, several provinces had been ceded that bordered the not-so-friendly country of Bavaria. The French had played a great part in our success aganist the Prussians and needed to be properly rewarded. King Christian IX, the greatest monarch of Danish history, signed the papers releasing the southern provinces of Western Prussia, the ones bordering Bavaria to France. Twenty million pounds (20,000 in game) was given to the Great Northern Empire in exchange for the land.

The war between Italy, the Ottoman Empire and the Austro-Hungarian Empire continued on into it's third year for Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the second year for the Ottoman Empire. The revitalized army of the Ottoman Empire marched through the Balkan possesions of Austria, while the Italians struggled aganist the mountains.

France, seeing it's grand oppurtunity to expand it's European holdings further, declared war upon the allies of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Bavaria, along with the two other southern German states, declared war aganist the French. King Christian IX, in his only foolish act, agreed to help the French in their war aganist the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

On the day the documents arrived, the King was busy with other more concering matters. In a fury, he accidently signed the paper agreeing to help the French. In the long run the event did not matter, as the enemies would have to cross French land to touch Danish land!

Prussia, seeing the weakness of the Austro-Hungarian, declared war aganist them. The Russians, although not long-time supported of the Prussians, declared war aganist the Austro-Hungarian Empire, who in turn brought Serbia into the war.

French, although far superior than anything the remaining German states had, slowly moved into enemy territory. By September 4th, 1888, the situation was hopeful for the French. Having only declared war aganist the German states on April 30th, 1888.

For three and a half years, the Great Northern Empire and the French remained at peace. The face of Europe, forever changed over the last decades of warfare. The Italians succeed in forcing the Austro-Hungarian Empire to cede over what the Italians called "national claims". The Ottoman Empire, for it's help in the conflict, recieved nothing.

Prussia and the Russian Empire succeed in further crippling the already crippled Austro-Hungarian Empire. King Christian IX was sure Prussia would share the same fate, one day, one time, but not now.

France was proving to be a menace as an ally now. Although one of the greatest military powers on the face of Earth, Emperor Napoleon the III loved his warfare. Without regard for the well being of other people, Emperor Napoleon declared war aganist the industrious nation of Belgium.

Belgium, a rather small defenseless country, had used military alliances and diplomatic agreements to keep any possible enemy away. By 1892 however, those agreements had ceased, and France declared war. Though, Belgium still had two military alliances, one with the Netherlands and the Prussians.

At the beginning of the war, the majority of our soldiers were enjoying extended leave with their families, the military's budget had seen reduction after reduction over the last three years. The military's budget quickly recieved ample supply of cash.

A hastily preared Dutch army took advantage of our position. Before Danish troops could arrive to the border, thousands of Dutch had crossed the border. Meanwhile, the offensive aganist the nation of Belgium was proceeding with the greatest of success.

With the Dutch invades thrown back, the invasion of their homeland could begin in earnest. And that did happen. One hundred and twenty thousand Danish and German soldiers reported to their assigned outposts and began the march towards the front. By late August of 1892, the invasion of the Dutch homeland began.

With the condition of the Dutch army, resistance was futile for them. There was no hope for the Dutch, every moment they fought they only delayed the inevitable, their defeat.

In early November of 1892, the first Dutch peace treaty arrived in Copenhagen. King Christian IX, instead of throwing this treaty into the fire, signed it.

The same scene would happen on January 15th, 1893. The first Belgian peace treaty arrived in Copenhagen and was signed by King Christian IX.

The Prussians had lucked out. King Christian IX had granted the Prussian request for a peace returning the nations to status quo. In the end of the war, it was the Great Northern Empire that had gained more from the war than Emperor Napoleon and the French.

Wow...this AAR is fast, concise, and interesting.

Very history-book account, but by avoiding getting mired in details, you present a sweeping picture of Europe at war and swiftly changing borders -- it's like a fun 30-minute action cartoon, and I mean that as a compliment.

In gameplay terms, how in the world do you get around having that much badboy and a loooong border with Russia? Have you just stepped extra careful around the sleeping bear?

In the game, due my high prestige, I am gaining 3.30 diplomatic influence each year. I have had two diplomatic events triggering (raising the percentage).

Each year, improve my relations according to the situation. At one point, to keep Russia from pestering me, I spent all 3 DI in improving our relationship. The United Kingdom and France aren't as hard to keep happy as they keep improving their relationship with me. If our relations weren't so good, I'm sure UK or France would eagerly declare war on me.

And thanks for the comments, I try to keep it fast paced. I tend to find slow, drawn out stories, books, movies uninteresting.

The Crown of Europe
Chapter 13: Expansion by Reason
1894

After the conclusion of the latest war, the issue of Finland came to King Christian IX's mind. The Finnish people had been oppressed under the Czar's regime for several decades. With the order of the King, diplomats were sent to St. Petersburg, Russia, the capital of the Czarist regime.

A deal had been concluded with immense benefits to the Russians. The Russian industry and military technologies were behind par with the rest of the civilized world.

April 7th, 1894, the First Deal with Russia.

Immeditaly after the First Deal with Russia had concluded, the diplomats once again returned to St. Petersburg, Russia. The Czar was reluctant to cede additional parts of Finland to the Great Northern Empire, but the poor condition of his armed forces and industry quickly turned his mind. Once again the diplomats would return to Copenhagen with great news.

June 26th, 1894, the Second Deal with Russia.

The diplomats grew tired of the trips between Copenhagen and St. Petersburg, only if the Russian rail system was efficent or even existant. King Christian IX assured them that this would be the last time they would need to travel to see the Czar, and St. Petersburg. Once again the Czar was reluctant to cede parts of Finland. Additional sums of cash from the Danish treasury quickly turned his mind once again.

October 4th, 1894, the Third Deal with Russia.

King Christian IX recieved an updated map of the Great Northern Empire, along with the profits of the empire.

The profits of the Empire.

The citizenry of the Empire enjoy incredible lifestyles. Universal sufferage ruled the land, all trade unions and political parties were allowed, there was a set minium wage along with working hours. Acceptable pensions and health care.

The Crown of Europe
Chapter 14
1895-1900

The year of 1895 proved to be a rather peaceful event in the world, if you discluded Austria-Hungary and Italy. The year of 1896 became as the year of 1895 faded. The war between Italy and Austria-Hungary was becoming an event many children in the world would grow up knowing. The tenth year of the Austro-Hungarian and Italian war began with no end in view.

The situation as of March 20th, 1896.

King Christian IX, partially in spite of the Italians, declared war on the remaints of Belgium. The Great Northern Empire would show the Italians how war was suppose to be cared out, a swift and decisive blow, not a drawn out ten year event.

The situation as of May 27th, 1898.

The city of Brussels, the Belgian capital, constantly lay in view of the Danish Army. Brussels was not the objective as of yet. The Danish Army aimed to surrond the city cutting off any escape before marching into the city. And so, 76,000 Danish troops marched south of Brussels in the beginning efforts to cut off the city.

The situation as of June 16th, 1898.

Danish troops marching to their next objective.

Danish troops quickly dispersed the Belgian defenders and proceeded on towards Liege, which was defended by 10,000 enemy troops in well dug-in positions.

Moving on towards Liege, Belgium.

With Brussels surronded, the final assualt aganist the city was ordered. Fourteen divsions of the Great Northern Empire prepared to march into Brussels.

The March upon Brussels, Belgium.

The Battle of Brussels, August 27th, 1898.

Finally, near the end of 1898, the wars of Europe were ending. Belgium was reduced to Brussels, the Italians and Austro-Hungarian Empire finally settled their differences and returned to status quo. The Czarist Russia had finish it's expansion into Persia, for now.

The peace agreements of Europe.

In late 1898, the Prussians, having been defeated a handful of times aganist the Danish Empire, declared war aganist it. The border with Prussia always remained guarded on both sides. We quickly found a gap in the Prussian defensive line and exploited it with tremendous force. The Prussians brought in their allies, the Netherlands.

The next war of Europe. Prussia versus The Great Northern Empire, round number seven or eight.

With Danish troops still in the vicinity of Brussels, the Dutch had made a mistake. Within three days of the declaration of war aganist the Great Northern Empire, a hundred thousand troops were headed towards Amsterdam.

The third march towards Amsterdam.

The Dutch proved little match for the well trained Danish army. In early 1899, the Brazilians saw an oppurtunity to expand their holdings, and declared war aganist the Netherlands. The march on Prussia began on Febuary 18th, 1899, all free troops were located to Southern Prussia.

The march into Southern Prussia, Febuary 18th, 1899.

Progress by March 3rd, 1899.

The situation in Prussia, July 12th, 1899.

The Netherlands would offically be annexed into the Great Northern Empire on April 4th, 1899. The Netherland's provinces in South America went to Brazil. On the same day, a peace was signed with Prussia, returning the Great Northern Empire and the crumbling Prussian nation to status quo.

The Crown of Europe
Chapter 15
1900-1905

With the Netherlands incorporated into the Great Northern Empire, peace settled across the vast expanses of King Christian IX's realm. However, peace did not last in Europe, the Italians, eager to obtain an empire, declared war aganist the Ottoman Empire whom had a defensive pact with the Prussians.

The situation as of March 3rd, 1901.

The war slightly interested King Christian IX. Prussia seemed interested in obtaining possession of a few Italian provinces. The Prussian Navy set our for harbor from Danzig. The Prussian Navy never arrived near any the Italian coastlines, they never passed Copenhagen.

With the war going badly for the Ottoman Empire, and Prussia, the Great Northern Empire under the leadership of the aging King Christian IX, declared war aganist Prussia.

The world as at war. The United States, in the early part of 1898 declared war aganist Spain. The young American army and navy, met little opposition through any parts of the war. In 1899, Danish merchant ships spotted a horrific site off the coast of Southern Spain; the American Navy.

By August 29th, 1901, the world stood amazed.

The American occupation of Spain!

The war with Prussia offically began in late September of 1901, once the Great Northern Empire's army had been re-equipped. With the Prussian Army weakened from the previous wars and mass immigration out of the country, it would be a defensive war. There was no defensive war for the Great Northern Empire, on October 11th, 1901, a massive invasion of Prussia was orderd on all fronts.

The full-scale invasion of Prussia, October 11th, 1901.

Early November, the Prussians would meet the biggest Danish army in history at the Battle of Wittenberge. One hundred and twenty eight thousand Danish troops marched into Wittenberge aganist 40,000 Prussians. The battle that ensued was an onslaught.

The Battle of Wittenberge.

The first Danish defeat occured on December 4th, 1901. Twenty four thousand Danes went into a German province hoping for victory. At first victory looked as promising as only 10,000 Prussians were present. Fourty-thousand Prussian troops, the other third of the Prussian Army appeared. The victory was costly for the Prussians and short lived. Of the 50,000 Prussians at battle, 28,000 thousand died, eight thousand Danes lost their lives.

The Danish defeat, December 4th, 1901.

The Prussian defeat shocked King Christian IX and the Great Northern Empire. Advancing on their success, the Prussians quickly marched into the Great Northern Empire. The situation of Febuary 2nd, 1902 was disturbing to King Christian IX. Parliament, with the pressure by King Christian IX, issued moblization orders for the 16 reserve divsions on the Great Northern Empire.

The situation as of Febuary 2nd, 1902.

Although the Prussian invasion of the Great Northern Empire was disturbing, the advance into Prussia continued. The Danish Army advanced past Berlin and down to Halle to cut off the Prussian line of retreat.

The situation as of April 29th, 1902.

By December of 1902, the invasion of the Great Northern Empire was under control because it was non-existant. Russia, in hopes of gaining provinces from Prussia, declared war on the crumbling nation. The Russians were fairing poorly in the south, but decently in the north.

The situation as of December 23rd, 1902.

The peace agreements were agreed upon by early Marched 3rd of 1803. Prussia, knowing it's time had come, would cede all provinces except Berlin to the Great Northern Empire.

The Peace Agreements of 1803.

Until 1905, Europe experienced marvelous peace. The Great Northern Empire, along with the United Kingdom and the American Empire, oversaw peace in the world. In the late parts of 1905, the remaints of Belgium and Prussia were incorporated into the Great Northern Empire. The previously Austro-Hungarian provinces which had been taken by Prussia, were given back to them.

The Crown of Europe
Chapter 16: Passing of the Wind
Copenhagen, Denmark
January 29th, 1906

The Roskilde Cathedral

The Roskilde Cathedral was built during the 12th and 13th centuries. The Roskilde Cathedral is Scandinavia's first Gothic-styled house of worship to construction of brick. The Roskilde Catherdral later encouraged the spread the brick-built catherdral's throughout northern Europe.

Bishop Absalon, the founder of Copenhagen, started the construction of the Roskilde Catherdal in the 1170's. The Catherdal consists of numerous modifications over the past 800 years, the differnt architectural designs of Danish architecture, along with European religious architecture.

Beginning in the 14th century, the Roskilde Cathedral has been the mausoleum and burial place for 39 Danish Kings and Queens interred in various ornate sarcophaguses within and outside the cathedral.

Through his mother, Christian IX was a great-grandson of King Frederik V of Denmark, great-great-grandson of King George II of Great Britain and descendant of several other monarchs, but held no strong claim to any of the European thrones.

As a young man, Christian IX unsuccessfully sought the hand of Queen Victoria in marriage. In 1842 he married Luise of Hesse-Kassel, a niece of Christian VIII and had a family of six children by her.

In 1847, he was willed the Danish throne by King Christian VIII, as he did not expect his only surviving son, the future King Frederik VII to have any heirs.

King Christian IX's reign laster for fourty-three years before dieing of old age at 88. King Christian IX was buried in the Roskilde Catherdral. Queen Louise of Hesse-Kassel, the wife of Christian IX died in 1898. Christian IX remains noteworthy for the number of immediate descendants that became monarchs.
