The wars of religion are basically a mid game crisis in EU4. I guess revolutions are meant to be the late game version but they don't really have much impact. Would be nice if there were some more potential threats. Maybe a plague can happen which heavily hits production in several regions.

Aztecs was silly, but the Mongols was good. Not sure how you could do it in HOI4 without it being totally fantasy/fictional.

You only say Aztecs are silly for historical reasons not gameplay reasons. If the Mongols had never happened we'd all be complaining that it was a stupid rip off of the Huns made by Paradox and lacked creativity and that they should spend more time improving the historical accuracy of the Aztec invasion which did actually happen unlike stupid made up rubbish.

Your point?

Great events, or crisis that affect the late game, the point where a player is usually stronger than any other force in the game, can add immense enjoyment and longevity to the experience.

But is it wrong to want such an event to work within the normal parameters of a historical game?

I don't begrudge anyone their enjoyment of the Sunset Invasion, but CK2 is great in that it offers the Mongol Invasion as well, for those of us who like to play something a little more in line with historical events. If they introduced similar crisis to the late game of HOI4, I'd like at least one to be marginally historically plausible and merely expressed my concern that there perhaps isn't anything that could possibly do that.

I more referred to the general anti-sunset invasion crowd. I'd be interested to see what kind of "late game disasters" they could come up with in HOI4 but since it's quite a short game timespan wise doubt they'll be any other than new developments in tech.

China is the end game crisis in Vic 2. For half the game they are this nice valuable target. After westernization they will make UK look weak.

The Aztec invasion events actually work a whole lot better then the Mongol ones do (the aztecs have an engaging story, lots of events) and they don't tend to peter out without ingame impact in contrast to the Mongols who always stagnate in Persia/Cummania respectively. The only reason you say that is because the Mongols really did invade Europe while the idea of a bunch of Aztecs hopping a boat and invading Late Medieval Europe is ridiculous.

Then again, the possibility of a small tribe of horseman in the desolate wastes north of the Great Wall coalescing around one man, steadily uniting the warring tribes around his leadership, and then bringing half the known world under heel was also considered ridiculous. Untill it happened. Nobody laughs about the Mongols anymore

You're right, Mongols sounds crazy, but it actually happened. What event in late 1940s or early 1950s could be used, with a bit of artistic license, as an end game crisis in HOI4 though?

I can't think of one. Everything suggested so far is pure science fiction (which I'm not against), but no one seems to have anything that could be historically plausible.

Could that work? Does HOI always end with two factions? What is the Axis win?
HOI4 will always be able to end with the three main factions becoming 2 and then a tense period between them. If somehow you managed to make 1 entirely dominant well you're probably too good at the game anyway but it wouldn't be unrealistic to have an ideological dispute grow into 2 new factions. WW2 can in many ways be seen as the whole world stablising around key ideologies.
Though @ramius3443 makes a good point with the nuclear bmbs being late game disaster, that could easily spiral with a haplass player or rogue AI.

This is ingenious! Can't imagine why Podcat and the HOI4 crew hasn't thought of this. I'll drop him a PM right away :p !
