Matteo Senarega's Audience with the Sultan

Matteo still couldn't believe his ears but as he had been taught since childhood, he bowed deeply to the sultan, some things you did automatically. When he straightened he was slightly flustered but had somehow managed to produce a packet wrapped in silk, he slowly unwrapped it and revealed a sword, only it's hilt showing, the blade itself wrapped in a cheap leather scabbard. The hilt was simple, the round pommel on the end that was now common place giving it balance while a small guard was meant to protect the wielder of the sword, it was inlaid in silver with two large rubies at each end of the pommel. He placed it in his palms and strode forth to the sultan bending a knee and presenting the sword.

I hope your highness is please with this gift, it is meant for use, not ornament.

He had gone to the best swordsmith in Genoa, asked for a sword that was not excessively ornate, just to be a good sword that looked OK, and he had gotten this in return for his money.

Recieving the Castillian fanfare

The Sultan was considering the matter of the Castillian King, such a disgrace for the last Moorish king to...assert the rule of the infidel, but what other choice does he have? "I shall come to Madrid once the political scene in Ghernata is stable, my Kingdom.." how it pained him to say this "...submits to King Juan..." he shoke his head, his dispair eminent.

It was at that moment that Ibn Hamdis the Governor of the Belrearic Isles arrived screaming in the top of his voice , followed by his retainers, Guards, and civil servents , he waved the letter sent by the Sultan "How dare you ask me to evacuate the islands of our ancestors! How dare you!those insolent Christians are barbarians!they have no civilized taint or education or fine upbringing!and what?you the King of Al-Andalus dare submit to their filthy Pope who sits on his throne thinking he owns the world and monopolizes GOD?" the Andalusian threw his scimitar on the floor , fuming at the King's ill choice. The Granadian ruler sighed "Ibn Hamdis forgive me my loyal noble, but we can not jeaprodize the state's independence, please calm down...we have guests" the King gestured at the Castillians. The Moorish Governor spitted on the floor and frowned "I hope Allah sends you to the depths of Hell for the suffering you caused for the Muslim people and Al-Andalus" the King shoke his head , his governor's anger was just though unnessicary especially infront of the Castillian Ambassadors "Forgive me,I must apologize for my Governor's outburst, he had high hopes of restoring some honor back to Grenada....*sigh*....Tell your King I have withdrawn from the island for the sake of peace..I will not do such moves in the future...if that is what he wishes"

The Sultan smiled "As long as you are leaving tommorow, let us enjoy the fine fruits of Al-Andalus , a banquet in the honor of our guests!" Mohammed clapped his hands.Muscians emerged playing cheerful tunes of Al-Andalus, servents poured in from the Masquadra carrying plates and trays filled with all that delighted the eye and salivated the tongue.Fine peacocks, pommegrants with cream, fried wild boar and Andalusian wine, the best of the vine."Eat and enjoy my friends, and make this a night to be remembered".

Recieving the Genoese Ambassador

The Sultan admired the blade he was presented, it resembled the fine workmanship of Toledo, light steel perhaps."Matteo Senarega a fine blade, yes I hope I can use it one day...perhaps" the Sultan grinned "Now to the matter of trade, do you have a trade treaty to present to me?"

later in the day....

Reality in Firnaja
Shattered Dreams, New Dreams

"That was out of line Ibn Hamdis, if I didnt hold any respect for you I would have executed you by the Order of the Silver Crescent, NEVER will you even consider disgracing this court again!" the Sultan roughly shouted. He had enough of the rebellious nobles he had to contend with, and Ibn Hamdis's spectacle was audacious and way out of line.

The Governor frowned "If we remained in the island we might have had a chance to defend our claims, instead of this insultive debacle!that island is ours, we should not let a Christian infidel tell us what to do".

"Listen Ibn Hamdis, the situation of Ghernata isnt exactly peaceful, I have that maniac Abu Abdullah entering the Kingdom again, I still have factions fighting and most likely I will have to submit to the King of Castile to chase away the ghost of Crusade and occupation. Our brothers still speak of the horrors of the Christian rule in the north, do you wish to bring that here too?Enough of this facade Ibn Hamdis!OPEN YOUR EYES TO THE REALITY, we are driven to the brink of extinction, the Christians will never leave us in peace unless we play their games and SUBMIT" Mohammed whimpered in a low murmur, where was Allah in Al-Andalus's greatest time of need? "Ibn Hamdis, leave the matter of the islands aside, I need you here.Let us fight our enemies, and assert Grenada's role in Iberia lest we die in the blaze of battle, we must use logic and not brawn, for I fear we have the latter in lacking" the Sultan sighed "I respect your enthusiaism for Islam my friend, but the times are in need of a grip in reality, we expected the purchase of the islands to go smoothly, it did not go as we presumed, a crusade was on the verge and our very survival was threatened, I had to withdraw you, for the sake of the Kingdom".

Ibn Hamdis was still not pleased but was at least sympathetic "I will accept your explanation my lord...but I still believe we could have kept the islands.I also apologize for my...outburst " he averted his eyes "Perhaps once we restore order from within and purge the state of those that would cause fitna, you may consider some of my plans?" the Sultan smiled "Yes inshallah, but may I ask, what do you have in mind?".The bitter Arab grinned "Sailing to the west".

The Sultan cocked his eyebrow "What do you mean?only the great Atlanti ocean is there, the western sea is just a large lake of water, perhaps leading only to As-Sine (China) or India, what is there?" Ibn Hamdis produced some papers "I have contacted Ibn Khaldun from North Africa, who has sent me some papers and schematics regarding the words of Al-Idrissi, he claims the earth is a circular ball, that is if we sail from the Maghrib to the west, we may eventually reach China, but I am at loss though..." the Sultan's intrested was piqued "Why?".
The Arab bit his lip "Well the schematics say the earth is about 5 thousand thousand Adrouh which is...a bit misleading since that would mean we have a very very large ocean on one side of the earth".The Sultan nodded "Perhaps there are islands?".The Arab smiled "That is what I am hoping for, but I will not send any expeditions unless you my lord are content with the matter...".The Sultan considered the possibilities "Well, we shall send an expedition once we have restored my rule over the Kingdom AND achieved protection of our sake, such things are nessicary my friend, but consider your request obliged".

Granada, Granada

delacroix.jpg

Juan Manuel de Villena bowed.

"Most excellent My Lord, King Juan will be pleased to hear that Granada is dedicated to peace in Iberia and honoring the old treaties. Castille will move to contain the usurper to your thorne, if he has not already crossed the border.

On one more matter, may I please have your signature here, transfering all interest and claim on the Islas Balareic to his Majesty in Madrid. With Aragon's violation of the Papal Bulle, your decision to be reconfirmed portion of the Throne in Madrid and to cede Mallorca and all records, will be seen most kindly in King Juan's eyes at the upcoming convention.

I do hope you can coordinate with the King Of Navarra to be in Madrid at the same time. King Juan would like to promote relations and unity across the penninsula. Once your domain is stabalized of course.

Please, allow me to offer the service of my men to your hand immediately, as they cannot travel with me to France, and your need is greater. They are superb trackers and fighters."

He bowed again, as his squire moved forward with the paper he had been preparing at the side of the hall.

1383 - Granadan Recognition of Trastamara Suzeranity over Iberia

Let it be known, that Emir Muhammad V al-Gani de Granada recognizes the order of Iberia, and in doing so submits to the Throne of Castilla y Léon in name and act, trusting it to defend Iberia and maintain the status quo.

In accordance:

I. Castilla y Léon will send its might to quash opposition to the Emir and his heirs, and turn over to Granada all potential usurpers. Namely, but not limited to, one Head of the House al-Cordobi.

II. At such time that order is settled in Granada, and the luxury of attention has come to King Juan, a conclave will be held in Madrid, where Granada will be annointed into the Kingdom as a subsidary, and tributes of peace will be re-established. As a requirement military alliances with other Christian states must be terminated.

III. Granada will allow agents of Avignon to travel throughout its land to establish a Diocese of Grenada to cater to the Christians established there, and will banish agents of the false Pope in Rome.

IV. Granada will resume payments of Tribute to Madrid, exceptin as pertains to the next clause.

V. As a sign of trust, loyalty, and an understanding of superior claims, Granada will yield up its present possesory interests, claims, and holdings in the Balaeres to Castilla y Léon. This will count as 10 years of tribute, forwarded until 1393.

VI. Granada will maintain soveriginity over its taxes, tariffs, trade, borders, currency, faith, etc.

VII. King Juan will regard the Kingdom of Granada as a fief, bound to protect and foster it, so long as Emir Muhammad V and his heirs remain loyal, obediant to King Juan and his Heirs.

So signed:
~Juan Trastamara I, by God's Grace King of Castille, Toledo, Leon, Galacia, Seville, Cordoba, Murica, Mallorca, Emperor of Granada, et cetera, and Servant of the Catholic Church

xJuan Trastamara

~Emir Muhammad V al-Gani, King of Granada, Lord of the Iberean Moors, & Loyal Retainer of the Supremacy of Juan Trastamara I

Recieving the Genoese Ambassador

The Sultan signed the treaty provided by the Italian , the cash funds he could recall would be benefitial in times of need, especially war.

Recieving the Castillian fanfare

The Sultan teared , this was the ultimate disgrace, his political aspirations to claim Mallacora have backfired, and he would have to submit to the infidels.Allah forgive him, luckly, most of his adversaries were dead and he couldnt need to contemplate a rebellion, so he was kind of secure. He took a feather pen and gently signed the document. He sighed "Your men would be welcome support to defeat the lunatic Abu Abdullah, and inform your King I will arrive to Madrid as soon as possible, that is ,once the problems of the Alhambra are met.." a void of sadness was reflected in the eyes of the Sultan , stuggling to smile, he handed the document back to the Castillian "Anything else?"

Granada, Granada

Juan Manuel de Villena bowed deeply.

"No My Lord... and indeed, you truly are a Lord of Iberia. Just your signature is all I could ask. I will send word immediately, and I shall make sure to send your noble personage a token from France."

He bowed again, and backed out of the hall. His men assembled themselves before the Emir, and bowed deeply. They then retreated to their quarters until the King of Granada sent them forth.

The Aragonese Ambassador

ambassador010vm.jpg

Luizena, the Aragonese ambassador to Granada, returned to the Alhambra Palace. The last time he was there, he had been overjoyed that his mission had been a success. But now it seemed that all was last. He was flustered and distraught, and requested an audience with the Sultan.

Recieving the Aragonese Ambassador

Once his retainers informed him of the arrival of the Aragonese ambassador, he quickly ushered his servents to bring him forth "Senior Luizena, forgive me, I did not forsee these developments at all.The Papa of Avignon did not budge, though I sent a fine man to sweeten matters for him.Not to mention my civil servents were attacked by brutes sent by the Papa, and over that a Castillian contagent landing in the island!I had to halt the purchase for the sake of stopping a crusade, and now...and now I have to submit to Castille.I can not give your King anything except my humblest apologies, for we did not expect the Northern Christians to react like that" the Sultan shoke his head "What would you do friend?my Kingdom is small in regards to the other Iberian Kingdoms, and over that, Muslims in faith. If I kept the islands I would have jeaprodized my Kingdom's existance. That is why, I withdrew in hopes that you would reclaim the island without much fuss, but those fools took over..." it was obvious the Moor was sincere, his complextion was quite tiered and exhausted so it seemed "And now I have to deal with a lunatic Abu Abdullah Al-Cordobi, who is re-entering Granada as we speak, maybe igniting a civil war since he is my last adversary....meh, what outrageous fortune has befallen my Kingdom"

Exiled Prince Triumphant

arabs-ed5x.jpg

Granada, The Sultanate Palace

Sultan Abu Abdullah Al-Cordobi of Bani Ahmer, claimant on the Granadan throne and currently ruler of the capitol of Granada, sat on the very object of his desire. He could not beleive how easy it had been for his dreams to come alive.

Once the "old" Sultan's began to purge the remnants of the old regiemes, his followers flocked to him in desperation, as did others who previously sought the throne for themselves. His army of retainers had marched over the border and to the lands of House Bani Qayys, whose Emir greeted him with open arms and a force of a thousand men. His letters had done the trick, for as they marched on the capitol, old retainers joined the collumn bringing jihadis from Lucena, Benamejio and Priego, all seeking to destroy the Sultan who would seek detente with the infidel and submit to Madrid.

The fighting had been fierce, but the rebel force completely surprised the garrison in Granada proper, and the sacking of the royal palace came quickly afterwards, while now only the harem remained beseiged by a few loyalist eunuch guards who could be dispatched easily.

"Bah! And we were THAT close to capturing that dog Muhammad al-Gani before he fled... now he is Sultan of nothing! NOTHING I tell you! Now that I am rightful Lord of these lands, I shall rally men from the Maghrib and further afield, and call hellfire upon the Christians of the north, I shall march to Lyon and northwards, until all fall before my might!"

The usurper's face broke into a twisted maniacal laugh, which made ome of his supporters nervous.

"Yes, now all that is left to hunt this dog into the sea. I think I will send his head to be buried with his Father... it is only fitting that they were both killed by the same man."

The Usurper grinned, recalling how he had ordered Emir Yusuf's assasination so many years ago.

"This is a great day for the Counter-Reconquista! Here is where it begins my faithful followers, here is where it begins.

And to show you how grateful I am, for your devotion to a just cause, follow me. We shall cast down the doors to the harem and have our pleasure as we may for this night."

Laughter and screams filled the night, intermingling to bring fear into the hearts of those still loyal to Emir Muhammad al-Gani V.

Ballista Tower of Andalucia, Granada

"Habibi, here, have a Shisha puff" said Masud as he handed his buddy the handle of the smoke, gesturing it suggestively with a smug on his face. His friend, ever worried ,Ismail accepted it nervously, and inhailed the relaxing smoke "Wouldnt the captain punish us for that?".Masud laughed with an air of smoke surrounding him "He aint even here, hes knocking this beautiful prostitute down at Hallava heh heh "the men laughed however their enjoyment was cut short when the tower bell began to ring franatically.Ismail thrusted forward and gawked at the bell, his eyes widened with terror, was it the Christians marching to Granada?it made sense especially with the recent debacle of the Belrearic islands.

Shouts and confused cries erupted from the walls and ballista towers.Ismail looked into the horizon, the torches of the invading army lightened the hills of Alserryya. He squinted his eyes at the banners that fettered by the breeze , something was wrong, there were no crosses and no Castillian, or even Aragonese flags...no, it was the flags of al-Cordobi, the lunatic upsurper "Oh fuck, Masud get off your fat ass, we have company".

*********

The Guards protecting the city of Granada could not react quickly to the advancing northern army, Al-Cordobi had arrived under the stealth of the night with the support of the Northern Emirs, who were still not touched by the Sultan's Assasin Order. The panicking soldiers barred the gates and readied the Ballista fire , but since they did not expect such an attack, especially without warning, the storages of the city werent enough to hold any siege, and most of the Gates were locked with haste, allowing the upsurper's army to enter the city and force the Gates open. The barracks of Ghernata tried its best to deter the invaders, but the sheer numbers of Al-Cordobi's army overwhelmed them, they were slaughter mercilessly.

The people of Ghernata woke up to find their beautiful city desecrated by the rag tag army of the upsurper, pillaging and sacking anything in its path, even the Grand Mosque de la Muhhadab wasnt spared from their hands.Abu Abdullah led his men torwards the Alhambra, to siege the palace of Bani Ahmer and bring the Moorish Sultan to his heel.

"My Sultan wake up!Al-Cordobi has penetrated our defences, he is sieging the Alhambra as we speak, we must leave at once!" shouted the Master Guard of the Alhambra as he shoke the Sultan from the abyss of sleep.Outside the bursts of Granadian canons flared into the night. The Sultan moaned and stretched, however the name Al-Cordobi forced his sleep away.He jumped from his bed and looked at his captain with bewilderment "Al-Cordobi?how can that be?" he ran to the balcony, and before him beautiful Granada burned, the nightmare has arrived "Quickly my lord, we must take leave before the upsurper arrives".The Sultan frowned, no, he will not be dethrowned again, he will not allow himself to be expelled again to the Maghrib, he will not allow the murderer of his father to sit on his rightful throne!No...he will not flee to the Maghrib, but to Almeria, and then recapture the city and execute Al-Cordobi,purging Al-Andalus from this menace once and for all.

"Bring me my fine Andalusian, my retainers, nobles and all those still loyal to me shall ride to Almeria, we regroup there" and with that the Sultan camly collected his manuscripts and books, tombs of knowledge that the barbarian Al-Cordobi would never value, however he remembered something "By the way captain, dispatch a messenger to our overlord in Qistallah, let us see if the Christians are honorable, better a Christian than Al-Cordobi I suppose" he sighed and continued his "forging".

Baza, Garden of Andalucia

Mohammed V escaped under the blanket of the night with his family through the secret tunnels built under the Alhambra. The passage led to the town of Baza close by, where the family found their mounts and loyal followers waiting. The Sultan hodded himself and grinned "to Almeria we go" he striked his mare, which jetted forward quickly on the brick built road, his family and retainers followed suite.

Hours later....

The Sultan's Mare danced gracefully into the town of Almeria followed by a contagent of his most loyal Guards , not to mention his Hajib and High nobles. All of Smaller, and perhaps Greater al-Andalus have heard of the rebellion, and the townsfolk had aready assembled to greet the rightful ruler of Ghernata.

The Army of Al-Andalus , or whats left of it in the wake of the takeover, set up a camp by the town of Almeria for the Sultan.Slowly Mujjahedan from loyal towns, especially from Guadix, Malaga and al-Jazzera flocked and filled the ranks. The treasury hordes which were hastly taken from the vaults were used to employ several mercenary hidalgo Christians who yearned for a good fight, weaponry and swords were collected from the Southern towns, each giving its maximum support to the Sultan's fledgling Resistance. The Moorish Army erected some hastely made trebuchets and Muslim Ballistas in the Almerian worshops.Mohammed was determined to recapture his capital, and his loyal subjects too supported his cause, to restore the throne and stop the lunatic Abu Abdullah.

After assembling a force of about five thousand scimitar weilders, 300 horsemen, and 50 knights, he led his army torwards Ghernata, the jewel of his Kingdom, his honor would be restored on the battle field, and his vendeta against Al-Cordobi will be complete when he plunges his scimitar into that pig's heart. The time of justice has come and al-Andalus beaconed for leadership in her greatest time of need....

The plains of Zimia

"How fare our men?" asked Mohammed. The Moorish General sighed "Morale is high, your presence is most welcome my liege...question is, will the Castillians and the Maghribi Order support us?There presence could very well change the balance, since we are roughly the same size in terms of arms with the rebels.." he viewed al-Cordobi's soldiers, their Banners and Flags black as the scorching night ,seemed drastically out of place with the white washed Abodes upon the yonder hill.Their forces werent exactly large, but still formidable and may pose some resistance to the Sultan's reconquesta army.

"Yes, the Castillian and Maghribi presence may very well change the balance of the battle..." marked the General again, he was distressed, he didnt want to strain his soldiers completely fighting the rebels, any reinforcements would be welcome."Let us see if King Juan upholds his word...Al-Andalus is in dire straits indeed" Mohammed unsheathed his sword "I lost the islands of the Belrearic, but by Allah, I will NOT lose my throne" he jetted his Mare by force torwards the hill where he overlooked his, surveying them from atop "The time for Jihad has come my brothers, who here is true to al-Andalus?"the men roared and cheered.

A body of cavalry from Guadix and a contagent of a men-at-arms arrived providing a fresh nourishment of reinforcements to the Sultan's army, now it was the only Castillians left....On the Sultan's order, the Cannonili teams readied their naphlans to be ejected into the body of the enemy, the Greek-fire archers raised their bows unto the Kaba Qawseen, ready to rain a firey hell on the enemy. The commanders gave the signal and the cannonili and archers fired consequatively, never daunting and stopping. The enemy did likewise and the Moorish soldiers sheilded themselves.Once the exchange of fire stopped, the second phase of the battle began.

Mohammed raised the flag of battle and drew his scimitar, the time for war has come. The Sultan roared and his Andalusian was ignited into a frenzy.Like one, the Sultan and his mare rushed into the thick of the enemy. The Granadian nobles unsheathed their swords and descended from the hill following the Sultan, followed by a great wave of scimitar weilders and Mujjahidin. In the plains of Zimia the Moorish and rebel armies clashed and a new round of blood was shed in the drama of human history.

Would the battle mark the end of Mohammed?or his rise and change of fortune?such thoughts rushed into his mind as he hacked into the body of the enemy. His train of thought was interrupted with the jubilant shouts of his men "Silver Crescent Men".From the top of the hill the Master of the Order appeared with a contagent of horsemen and pikemen. The Maghribi quickly joined their Andalusian brothers against the enemy of the Kingdom who would see the undoing of Islam on al-Andalus.

King Juan.....where are you?....

Exiled Prince Triumphant, Pt.2

arabs-ed5x.jpg

Granada, South of the City

Sultan Abu Abdullah Al-Cordobi of Bani Ahmer, ruler of the capitol of Granada, wheeled about on his horse. The hill outside the city looked out over the plains of Zimia. Surrounded by his three sons and his closest retainers, the men looked over their assembled army, and then out over the plain at the oncoming collumn of Granadan Loyalist forces.

"Bah! What madness is this? Does he not know his time is over? His army cannot beat mine, and furthermore I have garrison reserves that he can never hope to control."

His youngest son, Abdullah, venured timidly towards his father.

"What if he has found reinforcements?"

The Usurper laughed.

"From where? He has fled his capitol, the Emirs are flocking to my side, his time is done. This is just a sucicidal march on his part... marching north with some false hope. This is a great day my son. Soon al-Gani and all his ilk will be swept from Granada, and then i will do the same to all of Andalusia."

His eldest son, Muhammed, cursed under his breath, and handed his father a report freshly delivered.

"Father, scouts report a second force approaching from the south-west. A company of mixed arms and banners... likely Christian mercenaries and vagabonds pressed into service or promised riches."

"What!? Bah, no matter. Mercenary scum are no match for our field armies and garrisons.

Wha.. what is that sound? Horns from the north?"

The usurper wheeled his horse to face northwards, towards the city, and again heard the horns.

"What further bedevilment is this? Is that our garrison calling? I authorized no horns. They sound awful, as if from some Christian form of insturment."

His facepaled for an instant, and then grew ruddy as he dispatched his middle son to ride north of the city and investigate.

The Hidalgos Cross into Granada

68vtk1.jpg

It had been a long time since Alfonso Munoz had been to Granada. The last time he had come, he had come with his sword in his hand, and a cross in the other. So it was again.

As acting Marshal, the aging commander, raised his arm, and the Hidalgos of Iberia began to ford the river in a long line and then accend the ridge that led to the city of Granada. The city was now subject to King Juan's rule, excepting this rebel disruption of King Juan's vassal.

Runners from the loyalist Army of Granada had reported they would engage the forces of Sultan Abu Abdullah Al-Cordobi on the Plains of Zimia to the south, and a company of mercenaries from Aragon and Mucia would come from the east.

The Armies of Castilla y Leon would have the greatest surprise, but would also likely engage the enemy first, and come under the heaviest fire riding between the garrison in the city and the rebel field army. The forces of King Juan had an added advantage over their rebellious Moorish subjects... every other time they had come the city had burned, and Moorish armies shown little mercy.

As the line crested the ridge, they formed up into a column eight horses abreast, and five hundred long. Alfonso Munoz, rode out ahead and stopped. He lifted his sword into the air, and then brought it down sharply, signaling the thunderous charge.

A Change of Fortune for the High Summer

Crusades%20Siege%20Weapons.jpg

Trebuchet assembly by the walls of Grenada

The arrival of the Castillians had crushed al-Cordobi's forces, who were already retreating into the city of Grenada as more troops from Almeria joined their bretheren against the rebels.Once Al-Cordobi took refugee in the city, Mohammed knew the conclusion of the war, the hard part had already been completed, and now, only the liberation of the city remained for him to utterly crush all his opponents, ahhhh the nostiliga of victory! The Deja Vu the battle imitated reminded him of his old young days when he use to fight his fathers enemies....yes the vendetta to kill his father's murderer is at hand and al-Andalus for the first time in its history will be free of feuds and fighting.Enough!he must concentrate on the matters at hand.

He amassed his men for a full assault against the Fort walls of Ghernata, beautiful, eternal Ghernata, the jewel of small Andalucia. He barked orders at his naplam and trebuchet engineers to ready their contraptions for a brutal siege of the walls, any breach would end the war.He had to end the travesty of the upsurper *sitting*on his throne, supposedly *ruling* his Kingdom...

Once his orders were taken out at full speed by the mobile and capable Muslim engineers, the best in all of Spain with skills that could outwit even the best Christian General, he rode to the Castillian camp followed by a small contagent of his loyal men, including his Hajib.

"Allah be praised! King Juan has heard my plea!Oh fine men of Iberia I the lord of the Muslims of Granada greet you and welcome you to my lands.Forgive me for...the state of my Kingdom for many are greedy for my throne.Your presence has changed the course of my battle against the rebels and I am indebt to you.Once we recapture my city" he pointed at the horde of engineers assembling Siege weapons upon the hill of Zimia overlooking Ghernata's Abu Mussab walls " I will honor you immensly for your great deeds.Your King has my eternal gratitude"

In the background, the deafening sounds of trebuchet blasts and Muslim trumpets echoed into the heavens. The Granadians had also introduced a new type of weapon brought especially from Almeria.A long tube shaped barrel made of a dense material perhaps steel, that could fire balls of flame unto the enemy. The Muslims called it "Midfaha" , an invention from the east that would eventually dominate the battle fields of Europe for centuries to come.Ibn Khaldun dated the use of such a contraption in 1376 and predicted its widespread use.Although the Granadians brought only a small amount, since they werent as effective as trebuchets or battering rams, they were still keen on testing new methods of war.To many, it seemed the Muslims of smaller al-Andalus lost the spark of their earlier prodecessors in waging war, but they were resourceful and agile , well versed and skilled in the arts that make any battle a success.

Unto Sultan Mohammed V Al-Mulakab Bil Gani billah, King of Granada and humble Prince of Al-Andalus

Unto the last great prince of the West,

I, Cheku Barlas, High Constable of the Realms of Timur Shah, the Great Amir and Successor of the long-famed Genghis, write unto your Majesty with a humble request. Our empire is wide and its cities riches from the ancient trade with China and the Hindus. Our people are strong in body and wise in mind. Yet, as to the state of law and religion in our land, they do not match these great virtues.

The greater part of our people are followers of the Prophet, while there are a few of the people of the Book among us. For the faithful, there are holy men, but they are self-taught men for the most part and some border on being heretic in some of their practices. These men hold alliegence to no one and thus stand as a liability not only to the faith, but also to our realm's stability and governace.

My lord, Timur, is also a learned man. He loves the histories of Alexander and Caesar, the stories of the Prophet and Ali, etc. Men who are knowledgible in such things are lacking as well in our realm, for the former Khan had no desire for learning and kept the people in darkness. Their only care was for the pleasures of this world. This too shall now change, with your Majesty's aid, we hope.

As made obvious by the above facts, there is a great need for the training of a new generation of preachers, doctors of the law, and jurists. There is also a need for men of secular learning to be raised up in our courts so that they may sing the praise of our glorious Amir. Samarkand must be the center of this program and learned men are needed to run it. Therefore we look, as has always been the case, unto Al-Andalus. Only Cairo can match the scholars of your kingdom and we fear that the Egyptian sultan would take advantage of sending a delagation into our lands. Thus we ask your Majesty to lend us a hand in this mighty project for the good of not only us, but the umma as a whole. No price you ask for in return can be to high. May the blessing of Allah flow upon your Majesty for as long as you shall reign.

Cheku Barlas,
High Constable of the Realms of Timur Shah, Great Amir of the Ulus Chagatai, Amir of Transoxonia, Jatah and Khorezm, Conqueror of Herat, Khorasan, and Persia, etc

*A letter arrives via mounted cavalier*

King Mohammed al-Gani V billah of Ghernata, Loyal Retainer of Iberia,

Congratulations on our victory on the Plains of Zimia; I have been told you led the battle yourself, which gives you much credit in my soldiers eyes. When you capture the usurper, I hope you are able to make him pay adequately for disrupting the peace of Iberia that we have forged.

With regards to promises I have made, I have made them to you in order to establish peace between north and south forever after. You can regard them as good, and we shall not discuss such matters again unless my promises are actually violated. However, to assuage your concerns, I pray you will appoint a religious official to meet with whomever the Church sends from Toledo. I will convey my will to the Primate of the Church in Toledo and see that he corresponds to you when he arrives.

I look forward to our first face to face meeting. Please see the usurper punished as thoroughly as your custom dictates for traitors.

Juan Trastamara, King of Castille, Toledo, Leon, Galacia, Seville, Cordoba, Murica, Mallorca, et cetera, and Protector of Iberia.

Age of Chaucery and Feuds
The last Adversary Defeated

Crusades%20Battle2.jpg

The battering and echoe of Andalusian naphlams halted when the white flag was raised by the third week of the siege, and the gates of the city were opened to Mohammed's armies. At first, the situation itself was eluding and overly simplistic, the Sultan had doubts regarding the surrender, for a lunatic like al-Cordobi would never....yeild to reason. He calmed his confused commanders and ordered them to lower their weapons, the white flag was an obvious indication that no treachery would take place, though obviously this was not engineered by al-Cordobi.

Never the less, Mohammed strode his Andalusian forward followed by his men torwards the city, gently guiding their mounts over the draw bridge so recently battered by the Rams.On the otherside of the bridge , he was greeted by an array of rebels, all in tattered robes and flimsey armour. They dropped to their knees and began to whimper like children.Mohammed was not use to giving such pity to young strong men but... "Forgive us my lord, forgive us....." the Sultan smiled and unmounted from his Mare "Who are you my son?".The teary youth looked at Mohammed "I...am the youngest of al-Cordobi's children....please...have mercy on us".The Sultan gripped his scimitar, the urge to slash this insolent seed of his father's murderer was too strong...

He calmed down and gently let the scimitar slide back into the sheath and struggled to remember his Sufi teacher's words...It is not virtue to be good to ones friends, but generous to ones enemies....yes.The Sultan smiled "You are granted amnesty, your freedoms shall remain standing. All those that fought with Al-Cordobi are granted...peace and Aman within my Kingdom though you have brought fitna(discord) and damar(destruction) I do not wish to bring more death...enough of death..." the pitiful men bowed and tried to kiss his feet, he mounted his mare again , he did not like this show of gratitude "Where is your father?".

The youth stared at the Sultan with a pose of reverance "By Allah, my father has been killed by his followers when they discovered his attempt to flee, he did not even inform us of his will..." the Sultan sighed, how he desired to end al-Cordobi's life with his own hands, how he yearned to extract vengance against his father's murderer, but alas, this is the will of Allah, and justice has...somewhat been served. What a fate to be remembered as a coward!.

The Sultan grinned and jetted his mare forward, his men followed suite. The people assembled in the plazas and streets cheered for the return of their King and lord, Master of al-Andalus and lord of West.Rice and flower petals were thrown from the rooftops and Andalusian Music flowed into the streets with the rattle of Egyptian torkitas. The Andalusian troops marched into the city, followed by the Castillian fanfare who were not greeted as enemies, but strangly, as heros, for the occupation has ended. In the horizon, the red mosiac of al-Andalus dangled with the rays of the Sun and signifying the rise of a new age, a unified al-Andalus with one man to rule it all, uncontested throughout the land.

Age of Chaucery and Feuds
The Sun Rises after the darkness of the Night

6ih6cg.jpg

The servents and slaves of the Alhambra commenced their duties freverntly as artisans and sculptuerers chisled and worked on the broken mosiac and columns no thanks to al-Cordobi's henchmen. The Sultan supervized the work of his men personally, the defeat of his rival has made him somewhat energetic and freverent. He granted his Harem girls freedom since he could not bear letting them remain after what they had seen, defiled by men who would not be detered by fear of God or Law.Although he granted amnesty to most of the rebels, he punished those that commited henios acts against the people of Ghernata, acts that could never go unpunished.

A group of Saqaliba (Slavs) worked on a broken statue , the Sultan eyed them wearily, their red cheeks, brownish like hair and blue eyes marked them out from their dark Moorish companions, though Islam forbidded any racial distinction between the faithful, Mohammed could only feel disdain and dispair, not against these Slavs but against the haters, those that brought al-Andalus apart, those that engineered the fall of the Caliphate in 1031 AD.He sighed and took hope that the defeat of al-Cordobi would mark the end of discord , chaucery and feuds.Al-Andalus would need to stand united in this dire time, for the sake of their survival at least.

He turned to his confident, Ibn Rizwan, the Hajib of his Kingdom "Tell the Brigaider to ready my Mare, inform the guard to equip themselves for a long journey, we ride to the North" the Sultan inspected one of the finished columns, patting it gently "Rizwan, are my guests well?" his guests, being the Castillains, the heros of Ghernata since it was they who changed the course of the battle and gave so much blood for the Muslim cause...how ironic, the Sultan thought.Of course, it wasnt just them, the Andalusian soldiers were martyrs and their families would be shown gratitude and gifts for their loss for the greater good. The man left the busy halls torwards the secluded parts of the palace, the untainted chambers where the Sultan had taken up residence.

"Yes my liege, our guests have been accomadated into the Royal Barracks, I have assigned some servents to cater to their needs" the King nodded "Splendid, and the repairs?" he wore his linen robes."Ghernata is a sturdy city my liege, surly such a small daunt can be repaired..." Mohammed laughed "Ya khalili (my friend) I did not ask you for fine words, I asked you the status of the repairs" Ibn Rizwan broke a smile "Alas, I am an old man, I dont pay attention to detail, but if you insist, I have appointed some groups to undertake the repairs of the damages done to the walls, and some to the Alhambra and the Royal barracks, by the time you return from your trip, the construction would be completed" Mohammed perfumed himself with fine Cordovan mixtures, and combed his beard after sprinkling it with rose water "Remember to supervize the foremen, the Slavs are quite a pain sometimes, and assign some teams to overlook repairs in the city itself, alas I doubt Ghernata was spared from the fighting..." Ibn Rizwan sighed "Some buildings have burned down and some gardens were exhausted, but Im sure we can add them to our duties..."

"Excellent, then I go to seal the fate of Ghernata, may allah bless may endeavor..." the Sultan powdered his nose and adjusted his purple turban, admiring his reflextion on the mirror. He turned to Ibn Rizwan and kissed him on the cheeks in the Arab manner."Take care of my son Yusuf and my beloved Sarah, for it breaks my heart to leave them for such a long time" Ibn Rizwan nodded "By Allah, nothing shall happen to them under my watch!" both men laughed as they descended from the stairs leading to the main gardens, an over lay of the beautiful Sierra hills overlooking the city.By the stables, the Sultan's beautiful Mare awaited him.A contagent of selected guards and loyal retainers were ready for the long trip North, torwards the heart of Iberia, Mostoles, al-Marjarta, Madrid....

A Lady of the Court
A Lesson in History

"Tell me Sayed Rizwan, what is the state of Cordoba in our days?" she eyed the old Andalusian shyly , tilting her mellow lips into a slight smile.Ibn Rizwan was busy with some manuscripts he recieved from Guadix and Jaladiyya, several outlaying towns close to Almeria requesting funds to begin the construction of new defenses, money he wasnt ready to spare with all the repairs going on in the capital itself. He turned to Lady Sarah and smiled "Cordoba is...desecrated.She is now occupied by pagans and Nasarah, and the Muslims cower in fear for their lives" Sarah sighed "That is the state of all of Andalucia, no?even Ghernata seems to be touched somewhat...by the infidels".The Hajib shuffled the papers before him and handed them to one of the servents close by "Milady, what is your husband to do?Ghernata has only recently pulled together and stopped the civil war, the Alhambra is safe for now, but we are no match to the Nasarah.Surly you can see that milday?"

"But theyre merely barbarians" he tone of voice held a disgusted pitch, Ibn Rizwan shared the sentiment "Alas if that was the case Milady, we would have defeated them and pushed them back to the Rhine.Reality is harsh, we do what we can to get by".The battering of hammers and thatchets filled the background, the racket was coming from the High Rose tower, the last part of the Alhambra still under repairs. He noticed her irritation "They will be finished soon...".She flustered and sighed again "We are followers of the true faith, why do we fail?"

"We fail because we are unable to unite against our common foe.Who brought down the Caliphate?who invited the Almoravids and then the Almohads?" it was a rhetorical question and though she was on the verge of answering, he intercepted her "The Taifas...we could never function as a state, you saw it with your own two eyes.Men fought for the throne as the enemy encrouched on Muslim land, and you ask why do we fail?".Sarah knew where Ibn Rizwan was coming from, she witnessed the disregard for survival amongst the former nobles, Power corrupts as they say.Of course, the Silver Crescent had already slaughtered most of them."Milday. your husband is a fine man, he tried to purchase the islands of the Belriaric only to be threatened with a crusade, he had to find a patron.Though Castille is not a fine one, she is the strongest, and perhaps we shall benefit from coming under her protection. As for the factions , most of them were whipped out by the Baya ignited by Al-Rindi " he chuckled at the thought, that old bastard must be enjoying his time in the Orient with Timur "and your husband was in dire straits indeed with al-Cordobi's fiasco, which if not for the Christians, we might have still been in Almeria...Thank god all that is over.Hopefully Ghernata will have a new future now, one not filled with wars and bloodshed, but a prosperous one..."

"And yet, is that enough?" she asked.Ibn Rizwan shrugged "I dont know really, but we can only put faith in Allah, no?"

"Well, the matters of politics and the court I leave to you Ibn Rizwan, for I am more intrested in helping the poor souls within Qistallah..."

"Perhaps, but we are in no position to partake in anything milady. We are barely rising up from the damages done by the civil war.Let us first clean our abode before we undertake cleaning other houses, no?"

"Perhaps...let us change the subject, tell me the story of Spain then...Im quite bored"

Ibn Rizwan sighed, he wanted to continue his duties, but enjoyed reciting the history of Isphania "Very well..." He gulped some water, and began to recoil the history of the land from memory, obviously he did it several times before "In the 5th century After Christ, Visigoths or Southern Franks, allied with Rome to keep other barbarians away from the limes or Roman border. These tribes received Hispania and Southern Gaul as foedus, a payment for their loyalty. However once the last emperor was deposed by Odoacer ,the Visigoths took Hispania as their kingdom. After several centuries (most of them marked by civil wars) the last elected king, Rodrigo, was betrayed by the count of Ceuta, Julian, who let the Muslims enter in Hispania. During the battle of Guadalete in 711, king Rodrigo lost his life. His left wing turned against him, as it was lead by bishop Oppas, a collaborationist of the Muslims and member of other royal factions. By the end of the battle the whole kingdom fell, and the throne was left empty, for the Muslims did not allow the Oppas’ faction to regain it. One of the few survivors was Pelayo; a noble in charge of the royal guard .For three years, Muslims ran all over Hispania conquering city by city, if they did not convert to Islam. The Berber soldiers, under Tariq and Muza, continued conquering on the other side of the Pyrenees, until defeated by Charles Martel in 732 in Poitiers. Once the conquest was stopped, the Muslims settled in the Iberian Peninsula, installing an emirate dependent on Damascus’ Caliph. Hispano-Romans kept their properties and social status, as the change of governors did not suppose a change in current life, which stayed the same since the Roman times. By 714, the Muslims had replaced the Visigoths in Hispania’s government. The local administration was not changed and counties were respected. There was no religious repression, just an extra tax for Christians . The different conquerors received different portions of land. Berbers stayed in the poor lands of the northern plateau and southwest Spain. Syrians and Arabs received the rich valleys and cities. By 714, the Iberian Peninsula changed from Hispania to Al-Andalus." he smiled "Now the north of Spain, a wet, high and full of valleys mountainous regionwas home for Asturii, Cantabrii and Basques since the begining of time. Conquered by Augustus in 14BC, these tribes were not fully romanized even if they spoke Latin and were more or less Christian but many were still pagans. These lands, even if conquered, were not the most ideal place for the Muslims, who just set a military force and collect taxes, and as with the Romans, not bothering the Asturii and Cantabrii. But by the late 710’s Al-Andalus suffered of revolts. The Berber did not like the land they were given and were repressed by the emiral forces in several battles until the rebellion stopped, but then, the Berbers turned against the Asturii, claiming higher taxes and setting punishment patrols against their villages. This forced the Asturii to start a guerrilla war. In 722AD, a Goth noble, Pelayo, who had returned to his county after Guadalete, became the leader of the Asturii and started a period of stronger attacks. This year..."he coughed" By the way I will call the muslims Moors ...the Moorish patrol entered deep in the Asturii territory, following direct instructions from the amir, who wanted to stop those revolts immediately. The facts are not clear, but in 722 , the moors were defeated in the valley of Covadonga. The most accepted hypothesis for this battle , a mere skirmish it was.... is that, the Moorish column was attacked from the cliffs and then fell back through the valleys towards Gijón, but was attacked in its way by the retinue of duke Pedro of Cantabria and was nearly destroyed. This first battle made the Arturii grow stronger. Once expelled the moors from the eastern valleys of Asturias and this “federation” was settled, Pelayo attacked Leon, the main city in north-west Spain and assured the mountain passes, isolating the region from the Moorish attacks. Pelayo continued attacking the Berbers which still stayed north of the Cantabric Range until these left. He then married his son with Duke Pedro’s daughter (which was relative of the former Visigothic dynasty). At his death in 734, his now called kingdom of Asturias stretched all through eastern Asturias and Cantabria. It was not until several years later, under king Alphonso II (791-842), when the kingdom was really settled down. He was recognised as king of Asturias by Charlemagne and the Pope. He conquered Galicia and the Basques, forming the seed of our enemies...."

"The Hispanic Mark was settled in 775 AD and allowed the growth of small states in the Pyrenees. Once the Franks had driven the moors out of France, the necessity of defending the mountain passes of the Pyrenees became an important point in Charlemagne’s policy. Fortifications were built, and protection was given to the inhabitants of the old Roman cities, such as Jaca and Gerona. The main passes were (eastwards) Roncesvalles, Somport and Junquera. In each of them, Charlemagne settled the counties of Pamplona, Aragon and Catalonia (which was formed by numerous counties: Pallars, Gerona, Urgell…). In 778, the Frank expedition against Saragossa failed and the army was destroyed while fleeing back to Firnaja.Anyway, this battle set the western Pyrenees free from the Frank rule. As a result, two different states appeared: the kingdom of Pamplona (later known as Navarre) and the counties of Aragon, Sobarbe and Ribagorza. Navarre emerged as a kingdom round Pamplona, its capital, and controlled Roncesvalles pass. The first king was Iñigo Arista and he expanded his domains up to the Bay of Biscay and conquering some towns beyond the Pyrenees, but never attacking directly the Carolingian armies, as he was his supposed vassal. It was not until queen Jimena (9th century) when Pamplona was officially recognised as an independent kingdom by the Baba. Aragon, founded in 809 by Aznar Galíndez, grew around Jaca and the high valleys of the Aragon River, protecting the old Roman via. By the end of the 10th century Aragon was annexed to Navarre. Sobarbe and Ribagorza were small counties, with no relevant importance. The Catalonian counties protected the oriental Pyrenees’ passes and shores. They were under the direct control of the Frank kings and were the last remains of the Hispanic Mark. Catalonia included not only the southern Pyrenees’ counties but also some which were in the northern face, such as Perpignan and Foix. The most important of them all was Barcelona, once it was conquered in 801 by Ludovicus Pius, son of Charlemagne. Soon, in mid 9th century and under count Wilfred, Barcelona became the head of Catalonia, and controlled the other counties’ policies, in an union, which lead in 948 to the independence of Catalonia under count Borrel II of Barcelona, declaring that the new dynasty in France were not the legitimate rulers of France, and as a result, of Catalonia. Theses states were small and had no much capability of expanding ,as Asturias had, and due to their situation in the mountains, they had no chance against a united and strong Al-Andalus. As results, their borders kept the same for two centuries." the Andalusian was obviously enjoying his long recoile of history, Lady Sarah was showing a piqued intrest. He continued "The Reconquista is a process not only of war and conquest, but mainly of repopulating. Christian kings took their own people to abandoned places, in order to have population capable to defend the borders. The main repopulation areas were the Duero basin (the northern plateau), the high Ebro valley (La Rioja) and central Catalonia. Repopulation appeared as the result of Berbers abandoning the land that they were given and the population growth of the Christian kingdoms." he chuckled, how history truly was strange in many ways!"Knowing the situation of Al-Andalus is important to understand the development of the Christian kingdoms.I will not recite the first Muslim experiance in Iberia, since you are already aware of them..... The 9th century saw the Berber revolts, and they returned back to Africa, and many governors of big cities far away from the capital planned to separate. Then, in 923 the amir of Cordoba Abdul Rahman III, the last descendant of the Omeyan dynasty, turned himself caliph, independent from Baghdad. He took all the military, religious and political power and reorganised the army and the burocracy. Once he had regained the control over the dissident governors, the caliph decided to expel the Christians out of the Iberian peninsula, attacking several times the kingdoms and making them retract back to the Cantabric range. After his death his son became a puppet in the hands of the great visir Almansur .Almansur became the terror of all the Christian kings, as he attacked and sacked Burgos, Leon, Pamplona, Barcelona and Santiago de Compostela. Almansur died in 1002, after being defeated by the Castilian army. Between Almansur’s death and 1031, Al-Andalus suffered many civil wars which ended in the appearance of the Taifa kingdoms. The taifas were small kingdoms, result of the independence wills of the governors of many cities. The result was many small kingdoms centred upon their capital, and the governors seeking only their benefit, attacking at any opportunity their neighbour kingdoms. Alphonso III of Asturias repopulated Leon and set there the capital, as it was in a more strategic position which became the Kingdom of Leon. From his new capital, king Alphonso started a series of campaigns which gave him control over all the lands north of the Duero. He reorganized his territories into the major duchies (Galicia and Portugal) and major counties (Saldaña and Castile), he also fortified the borders with many castles. At his death in 910 his heir Ordoño II was able to organize attacks to Toledo and even Seville. The Caliphate of Cordoba was gaining power, and started to attack Leon. Navarre and king Ordoño allied against Adb-al-Rahman but were defeated in Valdejunquera, in 920. For 80 years on, the kingdom of Leon suffered civil wars, the devastating attacks of the moors, intrigues and assassinations, and the partial independence of Galicia and Castile. The only moment when the situation seemed to change was under Ramiro III, until he was killed. King Ramiro, in alliance with count Fernán González of Castile, and his retinue of caballeros villanos, defeated the caliph in Simancas, in 939. After this battle, were the caliph hardly run away with guard and the rest of the army was destroyed, king Ramiro obtained 12 years of peace, but had to give count Fernán González the independence of Castile as a payment for his help in the battle. After this defeat, Almansur was the next to attack the Christians. It was Alphonso V in 1002 who finally defeated Almansur and regained the control over his domains. Navarre, even if suffering from attacks from Almansur was able to keep safe. It annexed Aragon in the 10th century and expanded its control over southern France. King Garcia II (late 10th century) received Biscay from Castile and under his reign, Navarre was the hegemonic kingdom in the medieval Spain. King Sancho Garcés III, “the great”, who reigned between 1004 and 1035 annexed Castile due to his marriage, conquered Sobarbe and Ribagorza and made Leon his vassal after killing king Bermudo’s III only son. But following the Navarrian custom, king Sancho divided his kingdom among his sons: Castile (and Biscay) for Fernando, Navarre and Rioja for Sancho IV, Aragon for Ramiro and Sobarbe (with Ribagorza) to Gonzalo. Ramiro soon made his brother Gonzalo killed and annexed his domains, while Fernando (naming himself king) married the daughter of Bermudo III, becoming king of Leon and Castile. Fernando I was the main king of his era. He conquered Coimbra, in Portugal and attacked the taifa kingdoms, not willing to conquer, but to receive the tributes known as parias. Fernando’s strategy was to ask for parias until the taifa was too weak. King Fernando also repopulated the Borders with numerous fueros. Following the Navarrian tradition, he divided at his death in 1064 his kingdom upon his sons. His son Sancho II of Castile wanted to reunite the kingdom of his father and attacked his brothers, with a young noble at his side: Rodrigo Díaz (later known as El Cid Campeador). Sancho was killed while in the siege of Zamora by a traitor in 1072. His brother Alphonso VI took over Leon, Castile and Galicia. Alphonso VI, “the brave”, gave more power to the fueros and repopulated Segovia, Avila and Salamanca. Then, once assured the Borders, king Alphonso conquered the powerful Taifa kingdom of Toledo in 1085. Toledo, which was the former capital of the Visigoths was a very important landmark, and gave Alphonso renown all through the Christianity, and named himself Imperator totius Hispaniae, or Emperor of all the Spains (all the Christian kingdoms of Spain). Of course, this meant an important change in the policy about Taifas, and all the Taifa kings feared Alphonso, so they asked the Almoravids for help. Almoravids were religiously fanatic and were mainly Berber. Their armies entered several times in the peninsula (1086, 1088, 1093) and defeated king Alphonso, but their purpose was not to conquer the Christian kingdoms (for the moment) but to unite all the Taifas in a single Almoravid Caliphate. Anyway, they stopped the Christian expansion south, excepting their only defeat, at Valencia in 1094, which was defended by El Cid. Meanwhile, Navarre lost all importance under king Sancho IV, for he lost Rioja against Sancho II of Castile, and was nearly the vassal of Aragon. At his death, the Navarrians chose as their king Sancho I of Aragon, who became Sancho V of Navarre and I of Aragon. Sancho Ramírez I gave Aragon international recognition, as united Aragon and Navarre, expanded the borders south, deep in the valleys conquering Huesca in 1096 and building a fort away from Saragossa. Catalonia suffered lots of pressure from the Taifa of Saragossa and of Lérida, and also internal disputes, as Barcelona had a dynastical crisis which lead to open war among the smaller counties, but by the1080’s, the situation calmed, and the domain of Barcelona over the smaller counties was restored. It was not until later centuries that the Christians started to see their conquests as part of a effort of centuries to restore the unity of the Visigothic kingdom.

The battle against Moors did not keep the Christian kingdoms from battling among themselves or allying with Islamic kings. For example, the earlier kings of Navarre were family of the Banu Qasi of Tudela. The Moorish kings often had wives or mothers born Christians. Also Christian champions like El Cid were contracted by Taifa kings to fight against their neighbours.

In the late years of Al-Andalus, Castile had the military power to conquer the remains of our very kingdom but the kings preferred to claim the tribute of the parias. The commerce of Granadan goods and the parias were a main way for the African gold to enter Firnaja.

In the High Middle Ages, the fight against the Moors in Iberia was linked to the fight of the whole of Christendom or so I gathered. Military orders like the order of Santiago, Montesa ,Order of Calatrava and the Temple Knights were founded or called to fight in Iberia. The Popes called the knights of Europe to the Crusades in the peninsula. French, Navarrese, Castilian and Aragonese armies united in the massive battle of Las Navas de Tolosa (1212) shattering the Almohad Empire completely and bringing us to our current state, a lonely state on the fringe of Iberia..."

"You spoke of the Reconquesta, but what of our history?"

"Come now milady, you know it already, I need not continue..."

"I beg you , please do"

"Very well...When the Umayyad dynasty gave way to the Abbasid in 750, Abd-ar-Rahman I ,an Umayyad exile, established himself as the Emir of Cordoba in 756, ousting Yusuf al-Fihri. Over a thirty-year reign, he established his rule over the whole of al-Andalus, overcoming partisans both of the al-Fihri family and of the Abbasid Caliph in Baghdad, whose title he refused to acknowledge. For the next century and a half, his descendants continued as Emirs of Cordoba, with nominal control over the rest of al-Andalus (and sometimes parts of western North Africa) but with real control, particularly over the marches along the Christian border, varying greatly depending on the competence of the individual Emir. Indeed, Abdallah ibn Muhammad, who was Emir around 900, had very little control beyond the area immediately around Cordoba.

However, Abdallah's grandson Abd-ar-Rahman III, who succeeded him in 912, not only rapidly restored Ummayad power not only throughout al-Andalus but extended it into western North Africa as well. In 929 he proclaimed himself Caliph, elevating the emirate to a position competing in prestige not only with the Abbasid Caliph in Baghdad but also the Shi'ite Caliph in Tunis — with whom he was competing for control of North Africa.

The period of the Caliphate can reasonably be regarded as the golden age of al-Andalus. Irrigation techniques and crops – for instance, rice, oranges and a variety of other citrus fruits – imported from the Middle East provided the area around Cordoba and some other Andalusi cities with an agricultural infrastructure well in advance of that of any other part of western Europe. Cordoba under the Caliphate, with a population of perhaps 100,000, was far larger and more prosperous than any other city of the time in Europe, with the exception of Constantinople, and competed on at least equal terms as a cultural centre with anywhere else in the Islamic world. The work of its philosophers and scientists would be a significant formative influence on the intellectual life of medieval western Europe."

"Amazing, we were truly splendid"

"Aye...One of the most significant contributions made in Al-Andalus was to the advancement of theological philosophy.

From the earliest days, the Umayyads wanted to be seen as intellectual rivals to the Abbasids, and for Cordoba to have libraries and educational institutions to rival Baghdad. Although there was a clear rivalry between the two powers, freedom to travel between the two Caliphates was allowed, which helped spread new ideas and innovations over time. The historian Said Al-Andalusi wrote that the Caliph Muhammad Ibn Abd Al-Rahman had collected libraries of books and patroned men to study Medicine and "ancient sciences". Later Al-Mustansir (Al-Hakam II) vastly improved this by importing philosophical volumes as well as varying series of books on diverse subjects, including medicine and music from the East to his new university and libraries in Cordoba. Under his reign Cordoba had become one of the worlds most important cities for medicine and philosophical debate.

However, when his son Hisham II took over, his real power was ceded to the hajib, al-Mansur Ibn Abi Aamir. Al-Mansur was a distinctly religious man and disapproved of the sciences of Astronomy, Logic and especially Astrology, so much so that many books on these subjects, which had been preserved and collected at great expense by Al-Hakam II, were burned publicly. It was not long, however, after the death of Al-Mansur (1002) that interest in philosophy sparked up again. Numerous scholars came to the forefront, including Abu Uthman Ibn Fathun, who wrote and taught extensively on a wide variety of subjects including Music and Grammar but whose masterwork was the philosophical treatise the Tree of Wisdom. Another outstanding scholar in astronomy and astrology was Maslamah Ibn Ahmad al-Majriti (died 1008), an intrepid traveller who journeyed all over the Islamic countries, and beyond, and who kept in touch with the Brethren of Purity. Indeed, it is said to have been him who brought the Epistles of the Brethren of Purity to al-Andalus and who added the compendium to these 51 books, although it is strongly possible that this was added later by another of the name al-Majriti. Another book believed to be his is the Ghayat al-Hakim.

A prominent follower of al-Majriti was Abu al-Hakam al-Kirmani, who aside from the studies of philosophy was also a particularly keen scholar of Geometry. A follower of his was the great Abu Bakr Ibn al-Sayigh, known to most Arabic Speakers as Ibn Bajjah"
the Andalusian sighed "Of course, nothing is permenant. The caliphate effectively collapsed during a ruinous civil war between 1009 and 1013, although it was not finally abolished until 1031. Al-Andalus now broke up into a number of mostly independent Islamic states called taifas. These were however militarily too weak to defend themselves against repeated raids and demands for tribute from the Christian states based in the north and west, which had already spread from their initial strongholds in Galicia, Asturias, the Basque country and the Carolingian Marca Hispanica to become the Kingdoms of Navarre, León, Castile and Aragon and the County of Barcelona. Eventually, raids turned into conquest; and in response, the taifa kings requested help from the Almoravids, the puritanical rulers of the Maghrib. However, the Almoravids conquered the taifa kingdoms.

The Almoravids were substantially less tolerant of Christians and Jews than the earlier Umayyads, and were succeeded in the 12th century by the even more fanatical Almohads, another Berber dynasty. In 1212 a coalition of Christian kings under the leadership of Alfonso VIII of Castile defeated the Almohads at the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa. The Muslims were driven from Central Spain in the next few decades until only the kingdom of Granada remained.Happy milady?"
She nodded "How times change..."
