A Contemporary painting of Abdullah al Musafir

Ahmad Al Brituni was born Ahmad ibn Abdul-Karim Ibn Abdullah al Musafir the Grandson of the famous traveller Abdullah Al Musafir (Musafir being arabic for traveller) a Famous Cartographer and a Explorer of Persian Origin who reportedly travelled as far East as Japan and the Phillipines before settling down in Mursiya.

Abdul-Karim leading Friday Prayers during a visit to Al Maghreb (Morocco)

Ahmad's father Abdul Karim studied the Quran from a young age and from Islamic sources moved to the court of the Emir of Seville Abbad II al-Mu'tadid and rose from being a simple courtier to both Chief Qadi,Mufti of Seville and Imam of the Grand Mosque. His religious Knowledge was renowned throughout Al Andalus and the Maghreb. Men from as far as Iskandariyya (Alexandria) travelled to Seville to study under him eventually a University of Fiqh and Aqeedah was built in Seville known as the Jamiat Al Tafkir Al Hakim or The University of Wise Thinking though it was also referred to as Jamiat Abdul Karim or the University of Abdul Karim. This enriched him and he became the second richest man in Seville second only to the Emir.

The Castilian Seductress

Abdul Karim had many wives but he had one who is romanticised even to this day Siti Isabilla Bint Alfuns a Spanish slave she had been the daughter of a spanish count a vassal of Castille captured after a siege she had been sold to Abdul Karim for a Dirham whom after buying her immediately freed her before marrying her. She gave birth to only one child Ahmad who was born in the christian year of 1030 A.D or 420 A.H. Ahmad being the only child of their marriage grew up pampered and content.Ahmad however through his studies and his father's stories aspired to be like his Grandfather Abdullah Al Muafir. At the age of Eighteen he set out for Fes with a pouch of dirhams determined to travel the world he returned 12 years later a drunkard and a glutton where he inherited a sizable wealth inherited from his late father. His Mother Siti Isabilla died two years after her son's return from Sweet Sickness.

Ahmad travelling to Cadiz

Sometime in May of 1064 A.D. in the year of the christians Ahmad met with the Sheikh of Cadiz his father's close friend. The Sheikh of Cadiz spoke of a land in the north called Brithuniayd or Brithuniyya where his merchants traded with the local people gems and minerals from the mines of Al Maghreb for Food and the Wool of their sheep. The Sheikh spoke however of one region called Glamuragyn by the the local people whereby the ruler of the area outlawed the 'Muselman' Faith and made it known that no 'Muselman' would be able to set forth in his land. This had infuriated the Sheikh of Cadiz upon learning of it and he had pondered on a way to teach the devilish count a lesson. The Sheikh suggested Ahmad gather a force and seize the county establishing a muslim stronghold in the land hopefully allowing for future expansion as the land of Al Brithunyad was like that of Al Andalus before Islam with rival Kings each fighting over dominance of the country.

Ahmad decided to pray so as to seek divine guidance on the proposal made to him by the Sheikh of Cadiz. That day Ahmad went to sleep and dreamt that he was in one of the many Hallways of the Palace of Seville it was four sided with one path leading in each direction East,West,North and South. He looked East there through the door was a child wearing ragged clothes weeping at the feet of her dead father suddenly the body turned. The body's face was that of Ahmad's.Ahmad terrified turned and ran in the other direction to West.Through the western door he saw a fat version of himself dressed in rich silks drinking from a golden goblet oblivious to the Assassin disguised as a concubine as she slashed open his chest with a poisoned Knife before killing herself with that same knife shouting " The Old Man of the Mountain's Answer".Even more terrified he turned to the south where he lies drunk on a ship as a storm the size of a mountain approaches threatening to swallow him and the feeble ship up. Slowly Ahmad turns to the Northern door where it is split Left and Right(Good and Bad) on the left side of the door he sees himself kneeling before a Castilian King's Sword though he wears clothing of a different make to that of the Castilian Nobility. On the right side of the Split Door Ahmad sits on a throne made of Gold with a Damascus steel sword in sheath holding court. When he awakes Ahmad knows what he has chosen.

Ahmad's Host landed in Deheubarth on the Thirteenth of Muharram 457 After Hijra (1064 A.D.) they were met by the King of Dahubarth (Petty King ) and his men who demanded to know their reason for landing in their Kingdom.Ahmad rode to the front of the host and told them of the count of Glamurgayn and his evil deeds against the Ummah of the Nabi. The King decided to allow them to pass through his holdings as the count of Glamurgayn had apparently insulted him many a time and he would be happy to see him destroyed.

dsc_2028_zps96c38781.jpg

Ahmad and his host continued on through Dahubarth reaching the county of Glamurgayn on the 24 of Muharram 457 After Hijra. They Reached the Castle where the Count of Glamurgayn held court a night laterat which time the count of Glamurgayn rode out with his advisors and bodyguards asking of what business had they arrived in the county of Glamurgayn.Ahmad then replied "We have come to besiege you and ultimately imprison you for your evil conduct with the followers of Allah surrender now or face death !!! ".The Count spit on Ahmad and fled with his retinue back to his castle where he remained for months before a sneak attack launched by Ahmad commenced as it was the night of the birth of Isa ibn Maryam the guards were quite drunk and some had been careless enough to leave the fortifications.Ahmad had secretly constructed ladders and had waited for the guard guarding the gate of the Castle to sleep then he sent some of his men to climb up those ladders killing the guard and opening the gates. The Glamurgayni men were unprepared and were slaughtered with the count captured and imprisoned. The next day the count was executed and Ahmad proclaimed himself Sheikh of Ma'dinat Almintaqat Jamila the renamed Glamurgayn with the blessing of the Sheikh of Cadiz and even the Emir of the Abbadid Taifa.

An important foothold.

I find the rendering of British names into something else very interesting.

Chapter 2 - The Sheikh and his Court Part I

Screen Shot 2017-03-30 at 9.49.38 pm.png

Sheikh Ahmad Al Brituni

The Sheikh had trained in the arts of diplomacy before acquiring his foolish dreams of adventurism aspiring to become a diplomat in the service of the Abbadid Taifa and had managed to attain an education in diplomacy even though his father had hoped for his beloved son to succeed him as Imam of the Grand Mosque.Ahmad in his youth was famed for his extravagant parties and his slothful ways though he was certainly not slothful to the point of incompetence as he was known for his competitiveness and the many routes he took to achieve what he desired with deceit and intrigue being one of them he was however known to be a kind and forgiving man giving to charity on occasion. He had Memorised the Quran by the age of seven and was a Sayyid or a descendant of the Holy Prophet through his Great Grandfather a Persian Sayyid invited to the court of the Caliph of Qurtubah for his knowledge in the field of Alchemy his mother a granddaughter of a king of the line of Beni Alfuns he was a considered a descendant of the great Castilian House.Depressed from the Horrors he had seen on his travels he preferred to drink his problems away even if it was despised by the Most-Holy.

The Sheikh and Nest ferch Gwrgant a member of the welsh dynasty that had reigned beforehand

Nest found herself in a room with the Shich or whatever the vile Mohammedan's called their leaders waiting to be married to him Oh Lord !!! what had she done.It had been a year and a half since the Mohammedan's had seized the castle and killed her kinsman the Count of Glamorgan. The Shish had allowed her and her kin to remain in court as simple courtiers as a mark of 'respect' towards their ancient house the brother of the count had accepted his mark of 'respect'( truly a traitor to Christendom he is).Walking down the Hallway with her brother she saw the Sish walking in her direction. Her Brother bowed to the Shih while she ignored him simply glaring in his direction the Shich noticed her mark of defiance and moved towards her intrigued by the stubborn gal.The Shish stopped before her " Why you no bow? I am Count no ?" he said in heavily accented welsh. The Stubborn Lass replied "I do not bow to your Mohammedan gods Shich !!! and i will not accept you " pointing at the Shih as she spoke, "as my legal ruler !!!".The Sish slapped her across the face calling the guards and imprisoning her in a fit of rage. She stayed in her cell for what seemed like days (according to her brother a few hours) finally the Shich visited her and he had seemed to calmed down and looked to be grinning (sadistic Mohammedan). The Shish spoke " I give you idea either you marry me or you stay in this cell for rest of live i give you a day to think for you are release now".The next day terrified of marriage but even more so of life imprisonment requested an audience with the Sich she walked into the throne room seeing the Sish with one of his Advisors.Opening her mouth before being allowed to do so "I will Marry you Sich only if you agree to this two of mine conditions."The Advisor moved to silence her but the Sich signalled for him to stop "Firstly you shall allow me to keep my Christian faith in Jesus Christ the saviour and Secondly you shall not harm Christian woman and children in your occupations of this land ".The Sish stood up from his throne and moved towards her she instinctively backed away afraid he would slap her the sish stopped just before her "I accept your demands but you should know that it costs me nothing to act according to your conditions as it is allowed that i may marry a Christian woman and my soldiers will be satisfied with simple booty they do not need to rape to satisfy their needs." A month Later she was in a room with the Sich and the Iaman or their priest their marriage about to be solemnised. The Iaman turned to her asking if she agreed to marry the man Ahmed in marriage she replied with a yes.

Chapter 2 - The Sheikh and his Court Part II

EDUARD+GERHARDT.bmp

A courtyard in the refurbished Castle of Almintaqat Jamila

When Ahmad proclaimed himself Sheikh of Almintaqat Jamila he realised that a proper court would have to be established with its own traditions and customs and more importantly a council of advisors would have to be organised.Ahmad had grown up in the court of the Abbadid Taifa and once had looked to serving the Emir of Seville in his Council before he had taken off to 'Adventure' throughout the world and so knew much of the intricate dealings of the court. The Grand Vizier was second only to the Sheikh or Emir in the complex hierarchy of the court even outranking the Sheikh's own family members as his was a most important position he would assist the Sheikh in Governing his realm and would also be in charge of handling the diplomatic ties of the Sheikhdom. The Rayiys Al Jaysh (Marshall) was the most top ranking of the Sheikh's commanders controlling the Military of the Sheikdom he was de facto the most powerful man in the Sheikhdom other than the Sheikh himself. The Wazir Al Malia (Steward) or the Chief Minister was in charge of the Economy controlling the Tax Collectors and the Mint a very influential position in the Sheikhdom and one of utmost importance not to be mishandled. The Wazir Al Difae or the Minister of Intrigue was more of a personal aide to the Sheikh than a Minister but was still considered as such handling the Intrigue of the State searching for political enemies and revealing the evil misdeeds of the enemies of the Sheikh. The last position was that of Court Imam who would lead prayers in the court and gave religious advice to members of the court.

Screen Shot 2017-03-30 at 9.48.01 pm.png

Grand Vizier Ridarch Al Wasim (the Handsome)

The Newly Appointed Grand Vizier was another member of the welsh house that had ruled Glamurgayn. He was not particularly skilled in Diplomacy but was competent enough that he was considered for the position. He was known throughout the court for his lust for woman once he had slapped the buttocks of a woman before her husband needless to say her husband was not pleased.Renowned for his cynicism of Christianity he only payed lip service to the faith and was remarkably honest about his views even if this would bring the anger of the church down upon him.He was appointed to his position because of his honesty which the Sheikh saw as a mark of his Trustworthiness.

Screen Shot 2017-03-30 at 9.47.44 pm.png

Rayiys Al Jaysh Ya'far Al Dahia (the Shrewd)

Ya'far al Dahia was a humble man a noble of low rank he had grown up in the rural area of Al Andalus. He was renowned for his sharp intellect giving excellent advice and creating brilliant military plans to outwit his enemies a just man he did not do anything that would contravene the Law of Allah.Trusting he listens to the advice of his subordinates and colleagues alike improving himself and his plans and ideas so as to better help the Sheikhdom though abit slothful at times it is clear why the Sheikh chose him for such a position.

Wazir Al Malia Gawriyad Al Asqaf (the Bishop)

Wazir Al Malia Gawriyad Al Asqaf was the christian bishop of Landaff a church where the christians of Almintaqat Jamila prayed he was born the second son of a local noble who sent him to a monastery in England to become a priest or a monk reports from the monastery say he excelled in his studies particularly exceeding in Arithmetics and the subject of History. He was sent to a College in Rome where he studied Advanced Arithmatics and Latin returning to his native Wales to assume the position of Bishop ten years before Ahmad seized the county.Ahmad was welcomed by him as long as Gawriyad was able to be payed a tidy sum for his continued loyalty and he was not to be removed from his position as Bishop. He had too few Altar boys in his church as the village boys feared his Wrothfulness and his cruel punishments to those who failed in their chores and duties as an Altar boy.He was chosen as Wazir Al Malia due to his skill in Arithmetics and Bookkeeping.

Wazir Al Difae Iastin min Al Zilal

Iastin min Al Zilal's wife died of the fever many years ago and ever since then he has kept to the shadows also a member of the House that had ruled Glaymurgan previously he is of noble blood. After his beloved wife passed he remained chaste raising their many children and staying shy of woman. His wife the love of his life was not saved by his prayers to God and he bears a cynicism towards religion maybe even a hate towards god for his love's tragic demise.living in deceit unable to face the truth sometimes even he himself cannot tell his truth and lie apart. When Sheikh Ahmad learned of the man he was marked almost immediatley for the job.

Abdul-Hazm a member of the same clan as that of the Sheikh of Cadiz he is truly a most noble man of the Andalusian Nobility he studied from a young age under the tutelage of the most famous and important religious scholars learning jurisprudence and the Sharia eventually graduating from a Madrasah in Baghdad.Shrewd in Intellect he has been a most excellent advisor to Ahmad advising him on religious as well as domestic matters even advising him on Ahmad's marriage to Nest which would benefit Ahmad's claim to the Sheikhdom through her dynastic ties to its previous rulers. He is most stubborn at times even when he makes such arbitrary decisions that even a man who knows nothing of religion could see the arbitrariness of that decision.Abdul-Hazm makes frequent cynical remarks which are just passed as another eccentricity of the man's complex character but hides his questioning of his faith he is also most lustful often throwing glances at the young women of the court after Prayers. He was chosen not only because of his knowledge of Islam and its laws but also of his intellect and his familial relations with the Sheikh of Cadiz his friend.
