The colonial nations features **destroyed** my Ironman game as Spain. Bug or WAD?

It looks to me like colonizing a significant portion of the Americas is worthwhile if you do one of two things:

  • Also secure yourself a substantial Old World land empire, so that you are stronger than any one of your colonial subjects and thus have a reasonable chance of putting down a colonial revolt.
  • Move your capital to the Americas very early in the process, so that you are no longer subject to the colonial nations mechanic.

That line in the patch notes was unfortunately badly worded (and I have edited it now). You haveing cores or not on those provinces make no difference. Five provinces in the same colonial region will allways form a new colonial nation. What the patch notes meant to say was that your cores would be removed upon this happening. Sorry about that.

Thanks for clearing that up. Personally, I would have preferred it if the colonial nations were optional - created by event chains once the criteria are met, for instance - with a possible trade or production malus for the people who choose not to have colonial nations.

Another couple of questions regarding colonial nations: firstly, if I colonise a region in the New World and it becomes a colonial nation, do any subsequent colonies in adjacent provinces automatically join that nation once they become self-sufficient? Secondly, could those colonial nations potentially expand on their own (for instance, a 10% chance in any given month to establish a colony in an adjacent province)?

Where I think Paradox have made an error is in putting (giving away?) too much of the supposed DLC functionality in the free 1.4 patch. Until a post by Johan a few days ago, everyone had assumed that the new colonial nations mechanic (as well as the ability to play them) was DLC. No one seemed to have a problem with that.

Great many assumed it would be part of the patch because this is too fundamental change meaning that if it was DLC-only, PI would need to balance every future change they make for versions of the game that don't have Colonial Nations and versions they do which is a big waste of resources and unnecessary complication. to both Devs and Players

In other words, if a change is something that will radically change the game, it will be free. CK2 already taught us that.

WHERE IN THE FILES WE DISABLE THIS BULLSHIT "FEATURE"?!
I want directly-administered colonies like those in Africa and Asia, not new countries.

Going from +50g to +0.86g per month (okay, make it 5g if I increase the tarifs) is painful. But actually the colonial nations as an idea is a great thing - I think that by 1.4.2 it'll be fixed. I would like to have more colonial regions in the future, including Africa and maybe India and Oceania.

Same with me, i got all Americas switched into colonies, i am afraid to raise tariffs now. The funny thing is that my precedently released vassals Kathiawar and Orissa in india are still western tech so they act like western vassals and not like protectorates. But they do not want land.

For this reason I backed up my 1.3.2 install. I detest this colonial nation crap too. All the other changes are wonderful, but that one should be optional. ie either a toggle when starting the game like ironman, or make them releasable like vassals.

Crap like this is exactly why I don't use ironman on any game. I'll never understand why people are continually surprised that a mode which prevents you from keeping a backup save ends up screwing you at the first sign of problems.

Colonial State system is something I have always wanted in EU4 and I think in many ways, it is great.

It micromanages and runs your oversea provinces without having to shift your focus from home. You can even name the new colonial states what you like, so you could name the Thirteen Colonies "New Tiaexz".

However, it has a lot of downsides. You cannot chose which territories go into a state, as such, I lost Bermuda to the Thirteen Colonies even though I wanted to keep it as a Naval port to the America's. If you conquer, lets say.. the Aztecs, all that territory, all unconverted, all uncored, goes into a vassal state which just springs up a lot of rebels and you do not have any direct control in building or converting or coring it.

Do the colonial states not get cores immediately.

If I send a colonialist to a province, and it turns into a city, I get a core on it.
If I send a colonialist and turn 5 provinces into a city, the new colonial state gets all of my cores on it.
If I invade a native American province, you get it without a core, wrong culture, wrong religion.
If I invade a native American province and there is a colonial state, they get it without a core, wrong culture, wrong religion.

So lets say you got religious ideas for fast converting, and a lot of spare admin points, they will become useless when you hit 5 provinces in that region, forcing your vassal to take the hit.

I'm curious - if you have 1 colony then capture 5 native American colonies, do they immediately form a colonial nation? Or do they have to be cored first? I haven't been able to test this yet.

The change does make everything conversion related fairly useless for someone who only operates in Europe and the New World.

Maybe you should be ble to send your missionaries to your colonial nations? Provided they share yours, of course.

I just don't see how the new colonial nation mechanic is dropping the OP's income to 4 ducats a month. If it is as big as he claims, this would be basically impossible unless he never raised the tariffs at all. When I made Brazil into a colonial nation and upped tariffs to 50%, they were paying me almost 9 ducats a month with around 10 provinces. If I had the entire Caribbean as a colonial nation, with 50% tariffs I'd guess they would be paying you a small fortune.

If you have the colonial dominance you claim to have, you should be getting more money than you were before from those colonies. I'd say your loss of income is probably more from the changes to the trade nodes than the colonial nation mechanics. The new Western European trade node is probably siphoning off all of your new world trade.

They form a new colonial nation.

Admittedly, I haven't done it from all the provinces being conquered, because i always had one normal colonial city in the area. So not sure if it turns into a protectorate, or a mix-match culture/religion state.
