Hi, I'm really liking NSB in theory witt all the complexity and not least supply and railroads and all that, and I watched some YouTube videos to get me up to speed on how it works before playing. But oh boy, did I fail!
Played Germany and all went smoothly, paid attention to railways to plan ahead for the offensives, had surprisingly high casualties many places, but it's early game and it was just a bit of a challenge right? Then Barbarossa... I gave the Soviets a good whipping in the summer of 1941, just able to take Moscow before winter, yet not quite reaching Stalingrad unlike previous playthroughs (consoled my way to get Finland aboard since the game never seem to make this happen without ridiculously long-term planning - have to cheat to keep the US out of the war early too, as they seem to join the allies in 1940 a lot).
December 1941: Most of the front is at a standstill for the winter and I begin to pay attention to other things. I notice the notification about my garrisons lacking equipment. I'm surprised because I had a huge(!) stockpile of inf.equipment and support equipment. Holy shit, I'm at -30K. I check resistance levels and they're at over 90% in much of occupied Europe while I was busy on the Eastern front. I had tens of thousands of surplus trucks, now I'm at -10K or so. Support equipment is also fucked. I'm not going to continue this game obviously because the whole thing is falling apart and I'm going to have rebellions all over, and just looking at the list of what needs repairing due to sabotage all over the place... And the rail lines are sabotaged all over, so there aren't enough capacity to both build new railroads and fix the sabotaged ones, and that's just the supply side of things...
Guess I should have paid more attention, but my point is that I'm obviously playing this all wrong with NSB, and I'm assuming I should have micro'd the offensives a lot, because I use fronts that I let the AI take care of when not forcing encirclements, and it doesn't seem to take supply into consideration much. A lot of the front has been in low supply throughout despite me using full trucks on the hubs close to the front. My assumption is that low supply is what has wasted HUGE amounts of equipment. I'm guessing using small armies on smaller fronts and microing their offensives towards hubs is a way to do this? But if I'm reading the situation somewhat correctly, the AI must end up in this situation a lot unless it's own offensives automatically follow supply lines? Has anyone looked into how AI Germany fairs at this point in Barbarossa? My play-style is very obviously obsolete and in no way can I survive war with any equipment intact...
Does anyone have recommendations for good YouTube videos about how to do offensives, organise armies and fronts, halt for supply to catch up, designing units with supply and equipment losses in mind and so on? I don't need the rundown of the basics, but detailed and with demonstration.
Any other input is highly appreciated!
