1937, July 24th:
- Early fighters researched, Brazilian Chief of Staff Gaspar Dutra orders further development of cavalry equipment and training.

1937, August:
- It is the beginning of the end in Spain. Nationalist forces in the north have, after at least two major failures in the past 14 months, finally relieved beleaguered Seville. Now, it is Republican Spain that is split in twain: the remaining Republican forces in Merida are cut off from Madrid and cannot resupply.

1937, August 9th:
- Bad news in Spain, worse in China. Japanese forces have marched into a defenceless Nanking, and just today have come in unbelievably horrible reports of what Hirohito's soldiers have done there. As China's capital burns, so the Japanese advance with tremendous speed and force upon all remaining positions north of the Yellow.

- China's great rivers have proved no barrier; her mountains will likewise soon be tested. Let us hope that the rocks and the people of Han withstand the storm.

very nice update! i guess your relationship with germany will take a turn for the worst when war comes :p

LM+: ...China is outmatched in industry, technology, and modern equipment; her fight will be a hard one.

that is usually the case. :(

excellent updates! !

Very nice updates; especially liked the diplo relations report :D

BTW, I noticed you have Coal as a resource instead of Energy, is that a result of your modding?

What's this? LM+ has a new AAR and it's Brazil, my favorite country to play, and no one told me! For shame.

Great start. Mirrors most of my games (well, except for the mods and the cavalry focus) and I cannot wait to see how it turns out.

Outstanding report!

How are your ambitious IC improvements evolving?
Thanks! The IC is coming along, but that dratted Justo of Argentina is distracting us.

It ain't Wolfhound stuff, but, hey, I try. HSR has coal instead of enegy, presumeably because Aregorn likes it better. I don't mind either way.

Will you take advantage of that you know when the war will break out?
*mooches a pull or two* For the answer to your question, read on.

Thank you kindly. I think you will find that things are going to diverge shortly...

What is this war you people keep talking about? I don't see any likelihood of war... ;)

Thanks, Ghostwriter and all! I was delayed for a few days due to RL and game-tweaking, but now have a few more updates ready. As of this moment, I've played up to 1-1-39.

1937, September 11th:
- The Organizacao Henrique Lage proudly presents Advanced Construction Engineering! Brazil is the first member of the Allies to develop this important advance, and our next move is surely obvious.
- A Bright Young Thing in Itamaraty proposes that Brazil should sell this tech to our allies for whatever we can get. He disappears. Someone circulates an internal memo saying the same thing. Someone disappears. A wise (and observant) old chap stands up and hollers "Brazil should give this tech to our friends for free, just like they give us tech for free!". He is promoted. His Plan becomes Policy.

1937, September 26th:
- Our second round of factory builds is now complete and Brazilian industrialists eagerly take up Government funds to start a third, this time of six factories. They report that, barring unexpected delays, construction will only take eight months, five days. Brazil's industrial strength is beginning to snowball.

1937, October 2nd:
- Industrial growth has just made it possible to support a third technological project, and Epaminondas dos Santos finally gets a chance to develop the other basic air tactics doctrine.
image041ip6.gif

1937, October-November:
- The price of gold rises on the world market. The United States thrice shuts off our funds, causing our supplies and metal income to crash. Only after a solid month of frenzied haggling is Itamaraty able to close a deal that sticks: 24 supplies for $18. However, our sharp-trading commodities moguls are just as ruthless with the Germans as the Americans are with us, and Berlin is now shelling out 24 supplies for $10. Our overall terms of trade have actually improved.

- Getulio Vargas has ruled Brazil increasingly dictatorially ever since the elitist Old Republic fell to a military coup in 1930, and he only reluctantly permits elections to be held on schedule. His fears are confirmed. Old Republic-style back-scratching between regional parties (before 1930, the three major states of Brazil effectively rotated the presidency between them in backroom deals) swiftly infects the campaign and pundants predict that the political bosses will engineer the election of the Governor of Sao Paulo.

1937, November 10th:
- Getulio Vargas prefers to stay in power himself, thank you very much. He stages a coup d'etat, explaining his not-entirely unexpected action with the following speech:
image042ro4.gif

(source: Burns, E. Bradford; "A history of Brazil: third edition"; Columbia University Press; 1993)

He then cancels the elections, dismisses Congress, assumes all political power, and begins ruling by decree.

1937, November 12th:
- Vargas' triumph is soon alloyed. The political and legal professionals unite with the urban middle class to demand the restoration of the Republic. Intense haggling eventually hammers out a just barely satisfactory compromise: Congress will again debate and pass laws, freedom of the press will be sustained, but Vargas will continue as President until elections two years from now. Brazil is now a democracy.

Comments:
- This is a homebrew event based on actual history. The historical, most likely, and arguably the best choice (at least short-term) is to accept the just-proclaimed Estado Novo. Restoring the Republic causes renewed political turmoil, now and later, but makes major domestic reforms possible. More radical options are either to put Integralist officers in power with Army/Navy backing (unlikely, but possible), or to foment a Communist-led uprising (highly unlikely).

1938, January 1st:

Government
- Brazilian leaders continue to seek greater production efficiency through a more Hawkish stance. Vargas makes no changes in his cabinet: Political commentators are divided over whether this reflects satisfaction with the current group or a fear of the turmoil any changes would cause.
image043au4.gif

Industry
- Although Brazilian politics are highly unstable, our industrial rating has improved substantially. Argentina has pulled ahead of us, true, but we hope to make good that gap eventually.
image044acq9.gif

Technology
- Brazilian Army, Airforce, and Navy leaders have all had opportunities to develop more modern methods of war-making. Brazil is now capable of fielding fast, heavy cavalry formations, an affordable combination of speed and power that we have great hopes for. Our airforce and navy are less well-served, but this will change.
image045fj8.gif

- Itamaraty technical experts persuade the British to release data on "Mechanized Agriculture". The United Kingdom and the other Great Powers have a tremendous scientific lead over us; we need to ramp up our efforts if we are to contribute much to the Allies.
image048vo1.gif

International Affairs
- Spain and China are far away from Brazil, Argentina merely wishes to match us diplomatically, and Germany is friendly, peaceful, and an important trading partner. There is clearly no reason to increase spending on weapons or troops; keeping up in research will be sufficient.

1938, January-February:
- As the new year begins, Japanese forces have advanced deep into China, crossing both the Yellow and the Yangtze, and overrunning both the plains of Henan and the hills and forests of coastal Fuxian. Action currently focuses on a daring drive by Imperial forces to the gates of China's new capital of Chongqing, but China is preparing a counterblow that will temporarily liberate much of Jiangxi in the south-east.
image049jj0.gif

1938, Winter-Spring:
- Chamberlain is proving to be at least as possessive of British secrets as was Baldwin. Brazilian scientists learn much from their British colleagues, but only through very considerable diplomatic persuasion (mostly in the form of rare materials). We are forced to prioritize: Basic Battleship, Advanced Machine Tools, and Basic Fighter are all we could afford.

- Brazil's diplomats of Itamaratyset up small trade agreements with France, Canada, South Africa, and Australia to win friends and influence people. Now serving a democratic nation, their efforts will eventually raise relations with all other democratic trading partners to +200.

1938, January 4th:
- President Justo of Argentina delivers an impassioned speech today to a huge rally in Buenos Aires, claiming parts of Chile and Great Britain, half of Paraguay, and the entirety of Uruguay as once and future Argentine possessions. He lambastes both the UK and Brazil as "Twin shackles on the strong rising peoples of South America."
image046st1.gif

- Itamaraty wastes no time in warning the southern South American nations of the danger posed by the "New Rosas" and the "Would-be Platine Emperor". A war of cartoons rages between Argentinean and Brazilian newspapers, each portraying the leaders of the other nation as, respectively, lackeys of the Anglo-American Jewish-plutocratic conspiracy, and vicious piranhas with swastika-shaped teeth and gun-barrel fins. Amusing although all this is to the public, underneath the laughter there is sudden unease. Eyes turn to Europe ... and Hitler.

1938, March 3rd:
- Austrian Nazis seize control of Vienna! In flagrant violation of both international and bilateral agreements, German troops march into the country; Hitler proclaims the Anschluss (unification) of his homeland with Germany. The forces available to Germany rise dramatically. This sudden demonstration of Nazi ambitions to reshape the map of central Europe impels Great Britain and France to hasten their rearmament. Canada, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, and Brazil are less immediately affected.
image050ro0.gif

1938, March:
- Canny Brazilian commodities traders funded by secret Itamaraty funds establish an effective monopoly on the valuable trade in Coal between the United States and Japan, reaping a small but welcome profit.

1938, April 23rd:
- Chamberlain announces a new policy of more generous technological assistance to bolster Allied strength. Brazil is an early beneficiary.
image051at9.gif

1938, April-May:
- Shady maneuvers and well-distributed cash gets Itamaraty considerable influence over American oil exports. Profits from reselling the "black gold" to the highest bidder are ... considerable.

- Instability in the American economy (of unknown origin) cause American cash shipments to again be suddenly canceled; again, we raise our bid to obtain renewed supplies. We plunder their natural resources; they shut off our funding...We just love each other. Really.

Our cheerful wheeler-dealers present a report on their current activity (report does not include the small trades to make friends):
image052qy9.gif

1938, early June:
- A Brazilian Navy poor in doctrinal talent taps Epaminondas dos Santos to lead its research into carrier-based airpower.

1938, June 21st:
- Brazilian industrialists complete a third round of factories. Just as the Congress is about to pass legislation to authorize a fourth, the Brazilian Army issues a top-secret report on Argentine land power. Everyone who reads it is appalled.
image054qt9.gif

- 21 line infantry divisions! That is a larger field force than that of the next three nations in the Americas put together. Armed with German rifles, machine-guns, and artillery ranging up to 155mm, this force poses a clear and present danger to Brazilian national security, to say nothing of that of Uruguay, Paraguay, and Chile. We have to mobilize. Now! Congress passes, and President Vargas swiftly signs, legislation that will increase our army to the largest size since the 1870s. Reductions in our militia strength help balance the increased spending.
image055xd4.gif

1938, Summer:
- Japan makes further gains. Industry-rich Guangzhou falls in July. Bitter though this blow is to the Nationalists, it is followed by another, deadlier still: 1. Hoheishidan division and 1. 'Tokyo' Hoheishidan drive into the mountains of Ya'an to flank the Chinese capital. The Chinese heroically rally and force Hirohito's men back out, but China remains in parlous state.

1938, September 11th:
- The Brazilian Army reforms as five divisions of horse cavalry replace our one remaining infantry unit. We carry on with industrial development.

1938, September 30th:
- Hitler exploits ethnic-German nationalism in Czechoslovakia to seize the Sudetenland. Chamberlain makes one last great bid to appease Nazi Germany, flying (for the first time in his life) to Munich, there to betray the strongest and most stable of the new nations created at Versailles to secure "Peace in our time". Hitler in turn committed himself to respect the new borders of the Czech and Slovak state; let us hope that Herr Hitler is a man of his word.
image056py2.gif

1938, October 29th:
- IPT and Itamaraty team up to rapidly assimilate British and French designs of ground-attack aircraft to Brazilian conditions. If Argentina uses that enormous army of hers against us, "flying artillery" will help make up for lack of men and horses on the ground.
image057dp9.gif

image058mf9.gif

1938, December 22nd:
- With the development of Fleet Auxiliary Carrier Doctrine, our Navy now has the choice between a German-style war of commerce raiding, the new American-style carriers, or a British focus on heavy guns and commerce defence. Itamaraty settles the dispute in its own inimitable way by cutting a swift deal with the Admiralty in London and presenting blueprints for Fleet in Being Doctrine to Admiral Tarcisio Padilha's team.
image059ir3.gif

Comments:
- Both HSR and (especially) the Naval Mod make changes to the relative power of ships and to the effects of naval doctrines. For Brazil, destroyers and possibly battleships make a lot of sense; we need good positioning for both. Carriers are a luxury we can't afford, and submarines, while cheap, won't accomplish our long-term national goals.

what do you have in addition to the five cav divisions? how soon to the deployment of the "flying artillery"? ? :) do you know what the Argentineans have for quality of infantry? [i would expect '36, but either '18 (not likely) or '39 (quite likely) are possibilities...] IIRC, that "flying artillery" worked quite well for Germany in the late '30s and early '40s...

oh, how does your industry compare to the Argentinean [both base and effective]? ? :)

very nice updates! better get building! :D giving away tech for free?!?! for shame...missing the entire point of manipulating the ai for more! :D:p
