Well getting rid of the doria in the save file has the following result. Also I'm not converted the HRE. Also HRE has been removed from the blocked nations. This is the same save as before. Any idea what happened? Is this save possessed?

Ovince I'm assuming things about the order of operations & structure of your code, and what all know what happens when one assumes. I figured you import the province data, then process for the things you were worried about breaking above if some provinces had 12 holdings. Nestled between those 2 steps, something like numholdings == min(numholdings,7), overwriting the actual numholdings array but no other province properties....but again, I'm blindly assuming, so ignore me if appropriate.

Looked at start dates & history files just now. Unsurprisingly, the history files stop right at the last vanilla start date of 1.1.1337. Which leaves a 62 year gap before EU3HttT starts. What I / we (readers feel free to make yourselves part of we) can do is pull unplayed saves from a number of CK2 starts, convert them, get the overall tech level, and run a curve fit approximating tech growth over time, then extrapolate that to 1399 & map it to EU3 tech. Not as accurate as overlapping starts, but it shouldn't be too bad. Convert unplayed starts and post the average & sum of all the learning scores for that date. I'll do the spreadsheet curve fitting work. Assuming we're settled on how to calculate a learning score.

It's less about numbers than connecting the data sets of characters, titles, holdings, and provinces. I think that in particular, I made some very bad assumptions in figuring out which province a title is in (necessitating a barony in that province, but also using the data in common/landed_titles/, which doesn't apply to the republics if there is even one new family that arises). I honestly forget the exact details, I just remember it was an ugly hack to begin with. And I'm glad someone else is fixing it.

To be clear, we only need to map such things to tech groups, not tech levels. I was long ago able to reverse engineer the way EU3 gives a starting tech level and investment for any starting date. The converter copies that, but modifies it based on the achieved technological level. And it seems to work pretty amazingly. We just need to get the groups sorted.

Indeed, I'm being sloppy in terminology and that's a recipe for chaos. I knew what I meant, durnit! :) Was thinking learning score, not tech level, and should have referred to it as such everywhere in my post. I wasn't expecting to touch EU3 tech level at all, since I expect they're all mimimum in 1400 regardless of group

Well I got my infamous Republic save to convert. It was simple. This is with nothing else changed.

Works.

Doesn't work.
c_dublin presumably because it isn't independent in the final product.
e_ilkhanate again lost most of it's land. likely isn't independent upon conversion.
k_germany title held personally by one Grand Prince of HRE. Same basic problem as before.

Country converts as the HRE.

Overall it did a good enough job converting. At least it did in the distribution of land department. In particular I'm pleased that the Teutonic Fricking Order actually converted as the Teutonic Order and had provinces in the approximate region that I specifically gave them in CKII. Even though it's a 1 to 1 conversion the other converter either didn't put the TO in at all or it made them the Archibishopric of Prussia.

Somehow I end up in the muslim tech group...I'm sure that has something to do with converting at 1400 rather than the latest possible date. I trust this is being worked on so people can convert anytime after 1399. After a spot check of several countries it looks like most folks are muslim except the hordes are nomad group. Maybe I just did a bad job of teching. highest level in the world I can tell is level 3 (in ckii that is) in each tech. So it's pretty bad. Did conquering half the known world impede technological progress? Maybe because the Byzantines never fell the influx of greeks and jews didn't revive classical knowledge in europe. Maybe because I run a tyranical regime of forced religious conversion and cultural genocide.

HRE now has -97 prestige. I find it perplexing that the largest country in the entire world, successor to the Roman Empire, none other than the merchant republic of HRE has negative prestige. My last ruler in CKII has over 18k prestige. Total score is well of 200k.

For some reason there seems to only be one center of trade in thrace. Which makes my government change to administrative republic.

Anytime. It's advised, but not strictly necessary, that it be between 1399 and the end of the game (in the time period where CK2 and EU3 overlap).

This exactly. When one power is both very large, and very high tech, it really screws with the algorithm that was originally used for tech conversion, and basically pushes the entire world into the muslim tech group. I believe Idhrendur is working on this, or maybe has already fixed it.

This is a known bug. You actually start with quite a bit of prestige (probably +47), but you lost a whole boatload of cores as soon as the game was loaded (each of which costs you prestige). We need to fix the core dates so this doesn't happen :)

That's interesting; we should probably force a CoT in every merchant republic to avoid that. Right now we're letting EU3 decide where most of the CoTs go.

If you guys have a learning score algorithm you're content with, I'm working on how I'm going to project the growth of CK2 learning score forward to EU3 timeframe so we can set thresholds for tech groups.

Just made a wonderfully helpful discovery on the Paradoxian EU3 Research wiki. While the game doesn't start before 1399, the baseline tech year is 1300. So CK2 tech levels from an untouched 1300 start map directly to EU3 tech level 0.

The tech groups affect learning in EU3 as follows:
Western 100%
Eastern 90%
Muslim 80%
Indian 50%
Chinese 40%
SubSaharan 20%
New World 10%

I propose to assume everyone in the CK2 area has at least Indian level learning in 1300. I think that's fairer to Mali and Ethiopia than lumping them in with the Congo basin in SubSaharan. So we're dividing up the remaining 50% according to CK2 learning score. So realms with 80% or better of historical 1300 max become Western, 60-80% Eastern, and the bottom 60% become Muslim. 80% of 1300 score by 1453 should be a fairly low hurdle & most realms should thus become western as they should.

This exactly. When one power is both very large, and very high tech, it really screws with the algorithm that was originally used for tech conversion, and basically pushes the entire world into the muslim tech group. I believe Idhrendur is working on this, or maybe has already fixed it.



This is a known bug. You actually start with quite a bit of prestige (probably +47), but you lost a whole boatload of cores as soon as the game was loaded (each of which costs you prestige). We need to fix the core dates so this doesn't happen :)



That's interesting; we should probably force a CoT in every merchant republic to avoid that. Right now we're letting EU3 decide where most of the CoTs go.

Cores? I have one core on another country. Presumably because it should have been dejure k_lithuania. Otherwise 100% of my land is cored. I don't know if it matters but I had like 20 kingdom titles. If I understand the system correctly your de jure land is converted as cores.

The other converter did a pretty good job of passing out COT. then again I was large enough to recieve multiple COT whether I was a merchant republic or not. IMO i'd expect each merchant republic to have at least one COT located on their capitol. Which in this case would have been gotland.

Edit: How is gold converted? I notice I have about 2700 in EU3. The other converter gave me about 333,000 gold in Eu3. I converted with over 1,000,000 gold in CKII. How does the converter handle ridiculous extremes in gold?

Tech groups come out pretty funny. We're working on redoing those.

And the issue with cores is that you get cores on provinces you don't control, but lose them the instant you load the save, and each one lost steals a little prestige.

The issue with CoTs is that we currently don't set any. EU3 starts placing some automatically, but it doesn't necessarily make sense where they end up.

If you personally owned the entire world, you would end up in the muslim tech group. No matter what actual tech was reached. It's scaled by the distance from the mean...so if you are huge, you will be in muslim (the center of the scale), regardless of whether you're high tech or not, as a result of the law of large numbers. If you are high tech relative to your competitors, that means that pretty much the entire rest of the world will be muslim or less; if you are low tech, pretty much the entire rest of the world will be muslim or more; if you're really average tech, the rest of the world will be split evenly. You can see why we're not keeping this mechanism, I hope :)

Not other people's cores on you, but your cores on other countries. If one of your vassals, or one of your vassals' vassals, owns a barony in a province that was converted to a different nation, for instance...

Yes, merchant republics will need special rules for CoTs, in addition to our yet-to-be-written general rules for CoT allocation.

We estimate your EU3 income, and you get 13 months worth, just like every country in the vanilla EU3 start. Your gold reserves are the king's personal wealth, and in the EU3 timeframe you get a national treasury instead.

I was wondering, how would the converter handle mercenary invasions? In one of my saves Jerusalem (which I'm amazed is still a sovereign nation) is being invaded by the Bulgarian band. Would they just be rebels?

Actually, it's normalized by the highest learning rate, not the mean. I'm pretty sure the issue is that the CK2 curve of learning rates doesn't match the expected EU3 curve that maps to groups. But I was never *that* great at applying statistics. Sure, give me a chance to review and I can calculate you a mean or a standard deviation or a p-value. But whether any of those apply to the problems at hand? *shrugs* I just had one class, and my teacher was terrible. And I've yet to need those skills for my career, unfortunately.

I'm still doubtful that's what EU3 really does in all cases, but it does work pretty well.

Are we using my old "Learning Ability per province" idea?

Yep! Though I used numbers from the EU3 tech growth rates instead, and added sub_saharan because of the addition of central Africa to the map (if I haven't yet removed that change, I intend to).

Also, are you back around with time to put in to this? That would be wonderful! We seem to have recruited another couple people willing to work/discuss/debate with you.

Eventually, they probably would be. At the moment, we do nothing with armies or wars, so they;d just disappear. But that's perhaps something we should address. Analysis types, any thoughts?

I never object to thinking, especially in place of actual work.
Rebel mercs in CK2 are attempting to overthrow the government of a province and establish themselves as feudal rulers instead. So I suggest, if possible:
-parse them just like any other army into PSE's, but convert all the PSE's into soldiers (remainders get placed on map as damaged inf and cav regiments).
-Merc bands come from a home CK2 province. If we can, track what EU3 tag that province becomes part of, and assign the same EU3 unit types as that tag.
-Make them nationalist rebels
-If they win, merc band's leader culture and religion become ruler C&R but not the local C&R

So in the example, there'll be a Bulgarian nationalist rebel army in Jerusalem (embrace the madness) of with a full regiment of Eastern tech level 0 or 1 infantry, a partial regiment of infantry, and a partial regiment of cavalry. If they win, there'll be a Bulgarian Orthodox feudal ruler of a Levantine Catholic Jerusalem whose realm has both Levantine and Bulgarian as accepted cultures.

Thoughts?

What happens in the unlikely but not too unlikely scenario that the "home" province is conquered and converted to some completely alien culture/religion? You'll have the Swedish/Catholic Bulgarian band or you'll have muslim/italian mercs. Worse yet you might end up with muslim/french mercs. I don't want the Bulgarian band turning swedish just because somebody had to waltz over to the general area and commit mass geno- I mean forced cultural reassignment.

IMO i'd just say that bulgarian band was always bulgarian/orthodox and even if the Swedes invade there will still be enough bulgarian minority for that merc to stay as such.
