1933
The history of China has been one great triumph, great defeat and great bloodshed. In 1933, China sits divided with feudal warlords to the South and West, Soviet influence to the North West, a Japanese puppet to the North East and active brutal campaign against the communists. Chiang Kai-shek, the Generalissimo was forging ahead, determined to unite China under his rule and remove foreign influence from his once great nation.
Western observers having a good old gander as China falls apart
The most immediate problem facing Chiang was conducting the war that was being waged against the Communists led by Mao. Around the world communism appeared to be spreading like wildfire. Already firmly established in Russia, the communists had won at the ballot box in Germany, declaring a People’s Republic afterwards and throwing the spectre of communism into the heart of Europe. Not that it bothered Chiang very much, he had far greater concerns.
The fight against Mao’s communists was proving difficult, the poor placement of troops was hampering operations with thousands of troops being redeployed from other parts of the country. The fighting was fierce but the superior firepower and numbers of the Republic was wearing the communists down.
In April, Germany signed an alliance with the Soviets, creating a vast pan European communist bloc.
In July, after sustained pressure from three different approaches, the final redoubt of communist resistance fell to the armies of the Republic. Thousands of communists marched into captivity whilst many leading officials were captured along with factories, industrial plants and the knowledge that had been gained during the brief communist break from the Republic. Although not integrated or accepted, until after the death of Chiang, they would be ‘rehabilitated’ and go on to serve the Republic in many important positions out of public view.
The defeat of the communists, at least in China represented the first major milestone in the recovery of the Republic. At least temporarily, peace had returned, but it would not be long before the shadows of war loomed dark.
Huzzah!
The Republic’s industry was backward and its resources underdeveloped. Its armies outmoded compared to even the Japanese who sat in Manchuria scheming, but Chiang would soon face down the warlords flush in his confidence from defeating Mao.
In game terms, DH has the great feature that you can select how units upgrade, which means I am going to set all the current militia units to upgrade to regular infantry. Given how shitty the tech situation is at the moment, getting industry up to scratch, upgrading units and adding brigades (artillery) is the priority. I don’t plan on building any more land forces at the moment until the upgrades are complete and some artillery brigades built. But taking on the warlords through either diplomacy or war is important as well. Importantly, all beaches will be garrisoned with troops as the Japanese will try and land anywhere they can.
