Years earlier...

The following events took place on June 14th, 1941, Bordeaux, France (under German occupation)

domvilethesnitchg.jpg
halifaxtherat.jpg

The traitors! Those blaspheming collaborating dogs! Never before in his career had he seen... treason. Such treason to the Crown of England! A Pact with the Germans! British fighting side by side with those fascist scumbags! They should all be shot! These traitors, these villains, these backstabbing politicians! ENOUGH! Lord Halifax could not longer control the emotions boiling inside him. He stood up and yelled
“What travesty is this! Are we an instrument to the Germans? The Gibraltar Garrison can defend the Strait quite effectively, there is no need for a pointless Spanish invasion! Must we go along with these fools their warmongering just because we signed some stupid pact?”

The busy conference hall remained silent. If he could, Halifax would burn it, that despickable banner, that decadent symbol.

cpflagkopie.jpg

The Channel Pact. A pact of traitors, collaborateurs, fascists and thieves.
The Field Marshall spoke first
“I don’t know who the fuck you think you are, Minister, but this is not your decision. Spain threathens the Pact. Spain will fall.”
Domvile joined Halifax in his defence
“I am tired of this Channel Pact damn it! British don’t make deals with Jerry scum!”
Mosley raised his hand and the room grew silent. Halifax stared with disgust at the man that had led the United Kingdom down this dark path. The man that unjustfully had won the elections, and became the dictator Prime Minister of England. And the people cheered. That is how democracy dies: with applause. If only the true Prime Minister were here...
“Enough! Domvile, Halifax, you are relieved of your duties. The Pact’s interest overpowers your own pathetic agenda. Get the hell out of my face before I have both of you shot. I am ashamed of you.”
Lord Halifax shrieked, stood up and ran out the door, bashing an unfortunate clerk against the wall on his way out. He was followed by Domvile. “Relieved of my duties! After all those years of service!” he yelled while the men were walking through the long corridors of Bordeaux Town Hall “Those traitors! It is I who made the Royal Navy great. I and I alone!”. Halifax put a hand on Domvile’s shoulder
“Calm down Barry”
“How can I calm down with that nitwit De Nil taking my office! He is an old man, a weakling, and the last time he set sail was in the bloody Colonial Wars for christ's sake! What does he know about modern naval warfare?”
Lord Halifax his face darkened as they left the building
“We have to end this. Stop this madness”
Domvile cleared his throat
“How?”
“They have to die. All the traitors. I know people. People that can help. We have to do this. For England”
First so confident, Domvile quickly slowed down after hearing Lord Halifax
“You are speaking of treason! We could be hung for this!”
The men stopped under a large tree in the park. Summer was coming. It was warm and humid, yet Halifax’s heart felt like it was frozen. He was determined: this is what he had to do.
“We have no other option. They are anti-royalists Barry. They will strip us of our titles. Our wealth. Our achievements. They will leave us poor, homeless and anonymous. We have to fight back. Take back England. She belongs to us. The elite. For King and country!”
Domvile pondered for a while, and then nodded
“For king and country”
Lord Halifax took a small emblem from his pocket, and turned it around in his hand. It was a flower emblem, embedded with ruby. A heritage from the house of Lancaster, the most prized token his family possessed. His goal was clear: Like the Lancastrians hundreds of years before him, he would take England for those to whom it belonged. But he would need help. Funding, supplies, an army. An organisation.

Luckily, his many years in office as foreign minister of the British Empire had not left him without contacts on the international scene. Many of which would surely be interested in seeing this little Pact dissolve...

Just a heads up: From this point on, we're entering Flashback Country, so be sure to check the dates as they will get jumpy past Chapter 7. But first a little more war to keep our gameplay-readers entertained ;)

PS, we've updated the reader group with some treats, just as we promised. Me and Laurence are also discussing fixing you guys up with a neat downloadable if anyone wants to take up arms against the Channel Pact on his own game, we'll let the reader group vote. Expect a discussion opened sometime this week.

This is one of the best HoI2 AARs I've read so far. The look you've given it is impeccable. The crystal clear maps and charts make it look as if it was something straight out of a contemporary history book. Kudos on that. The way you've managed to create a completely different world with very little flaws in it is excellent as well. Really believable too.
The only (small) gripe I have is the writing which isn't always the most logical. Big decisions are often made within a few senteces and sometimes feel contrived. But I have that same problem at times with my AARs so I'll get off your backs about that ;).

Good too see some more Dutch people who write excellent stories. You'll have my vote for any upcoming awards.

After the fall of Moscow, Kiev, Stalingrad and Leningrad the demoralised Red Army began a massive retreat Eastwards, pursued relentlessly by the German Wehrmacht. Allmost all of European Russia had been occupied, along with the Caucasus and a large part of Central-Asia. Armeegruppe Mittel under Field Marshall Von Geyte continued to deliver devastating blows to the Russian army in Belarus, greatly bolstering his popularity at home. For his unrivalled military successes, Field Marshall Von Geyte gained the nickname "Laurence der Eroberer", Laurence the Conqueror.

uscatch.jpg

An American attempt at retaking the Azores was quickly intercepted by recalling the Mediterranean Command from Suez, and the Sixth fleet, along with a large transport force, was decimated in an attempt to breach the Azores.

centralsia1942.jpg

In September, German forces has reached Sinkiang with their advancing armies and a combined push began to break from the Kashmir line into the Japanese occupied territories

ftb.jpg

After the long-awaited arrival of the famed General Weiss and his India Formation, a plan was constructed to invade and occupy Siam and Indochina, relieving the troubled Singapore Defence Corps by cutting off all supplies for the attackers, eventually encircling and destroying them. The plan was dubbed FTB, after Weiss his famous first speech when arriving at the front: “Okay guys, First to Bangkok gets a free beer!”

falloffrance.jpg

After a final combined push by the Colonial Forces, the Afrika Korps and several elite Iraqi desert fighters, the Cameroon line shattered, as fleeing French and Australian forces attempted to make their escape to Brazzaville. Their final stand was cut short, however, by the superior mobility of Rommel and Montomery's forces, and the last remaining Allied defenders in Africa fell. Brazzaville was occupied, but no trace of De Gaulle was found.

The Channel Pact had now reached its full momentum, proving to be a formidable force capable of battling on several fronts, with unseen devotion. The free states of the world refused to surrender, and fought on, dedicated to bring an end to the Pact menace: In the Pacific, smouldering shipwreck after shipwreck piled up as the Royal Navy attempted to fend off the IJN and the USN raiding British fleets, while in Siberia the Red Army formed another line of defence behind Novosibirsk, refusing to give up the fight. Even for the Pact leaders, the message was clear: The Second World War would not be a short one.

naamloos1g.jpg

Field Marshall Erwin Rommel, nicknamed the Desert Fox for his exceptional North-African Campaign, and the Jungle Rat for his efforts against the Allied States in the African tropical rainforests. His cooperation and succes with the British Field Marshall Montgomery was a great symbolic victory for the Channel Pact.

Nice update!

By the way, it is supposed to be "Laurance der Eroberer" - otherwise he would be female :D (or he would be several guys at once, which makes more sence gramatically as you used the correct plural version for "Eroberer" - yet I highly doubt van Geyte is shizophrenic  )

See, this is why it's a good idea keep this guy around :p. Error solved.

Shizophrenic? Come to think of it, the "real" Laurence does have a tad of multiple personalities :) That, and the healthy desire to conquer the world (Imagine the fun he's having in this game).

-Edit by laurence: Who said Vincent isn't one of my multiple personality's? ;)

Do you have a full version of that flag? Because I'll be honest, thats freaking cool.

The flag was Laurence his idea, I took it into Photoshop. You should have seen his sketches: A crude square on a post-it, saying things like "Nazi symbol here" and "Needs more imperialism" :). We'll put the PSD up for download in the Readers Group.

Oh, and to CaptRobeau: I understand that the decision to attack the USSR was parrety random and instant, but to be honest nothing is more typically Laurence. We'll put an item up in the Reader's Group "The truth behind Barbarossa" when I have some time to write it :)

Chapter VI: Memories

To Lieutenant-General Van Geyte of the Kaiserwehr

Dear Laurence,

I was surprised to hear you were forced to return back to Germany so soon. I can understand, with the political outlook being grim and all, that the Kaiser would want all his generals near him in case something bad happens, but still, we rarely receive the occasion to have time and talk a little. Mosley also regrets your sudden leave, but understands that you continue to be unswervingly loyal to the Kaiser. Yesterday we went to look at the construction of the new HMS Hood, truly a formidable ship if I may add. I believe there is great future in a faster and less armoured fleet. After all, the last thing we want on the seas is another variant of trench warfare.

I long to return to my ship. The Sovereign has been in the drydock for too long now, and so have I. I miss the cold and salty breeze of the ocean, and the gentle hum of a powerful warship under my feet, like a sleeping giant ready to break loose any second. If the political scene restabilises, I might be allowed to do some small escort missions to Canada. It isn’t much, but it’s better than being in here stuck in a damp office every day.

I hear the Crown Prince of Austria-Hungary is visiting Serbia tomorrow. A bad move if you ask me. With the tensions in the Balkan being as high as they are, it is a bad idea to go parading in that area, especially as a crown prince. To follow my advise: Prepare for unforeseen consequences

I hope everything is okay with your wife and children in Berlin. Martha sends you all her love, we are expecting the baby within two months. If that old knack Eiker is still alive, give him my greetings.

Yours truly,
Fleet Admiral De Nil of the Royal Navy
27th of June, 1914

--------------

To Lieutenant-General Van Geyte of the Kaiserwehr

Dear Laurence,

I regret the sudden change. Peace has been exchanged for war, and kindness for bloodshed. I damn the foolish Austrians and Russians for their pointless feud, and how it has once again pulled the entire world into flames.

Yet I know that in the end we are all ultimately soldiers and must do what soldiers do: Fight for our country. I understand your reluctance to invade the brave little Belgium. I hope our friend Valkeniers remains unharmed. I have received your letters, and I too believe the Von-Schlieffen plan to be complete nonsense, that will go hand in hand with unnecessary bloodshed and murder.

I hope you do well on the Western Front. Both Mosley and I agreed that the UK should help the Kaiser in his struggle against our mortal enemies, France, but the rest of the Parliament has remained neutral on the matter. I am sorry I can not get involved directly in this war. But believe me that nothing would grant me greater pleasure than shelling the perfidious French’ positions from my ship. I and Mosley will continue to lobby for our country to support Germany in this war, but the damn liberals dominating the Parliament will probably go no further as to aid with trade and supply. All small things help.

I regret that my baby boy will have to be born in these troubled times, but it is so and no other. I hope he grows out to be a strong and capable man. A man of peace, as opposed to his father, who was a man of war. I feel that it is my job to shape a world for him in which he can live freely and uncontested. For as long as there are contrasts between the nations, there will be war.

Fight with all your valor, and may all your cannons hit target.

Yours truly,
Fleet Admiral De Nil of the Royal Navy
1st of August, 1914

--------------

wwi1916kopie.jpg

To Fleet Admiral De Nil of the Royal Navy

Vincent,

Words cannot begin to describe the horrors I have seen here. I feel as if I have arrived in the mound of hell itself. The ground has been polluted with the stain of lead and blood, entire fields turned into deadly contraptions of mud constantly shifting due to the endless bombardments. Cannons continue to pound my ears day and night, and many of the men haven’t eaten, or slept, in days.

They say Verdun used to be a beautiful place. I find that hard to believe now. It has been weeks since I have heard the song of a bird, or seen a living plant. The plains seem to dure on endlessly, covered by trench after trench, like scars on the land itself. We continue to defend and attack with futility, sometimes gaining a meter of ground, sometimes losing a meter. All while losing thousands of men, good men. The fields of Verdun have become fields of slaughter, bodies litter what used to be roads and pile up in the craters delivered by massive cannons pounding on us from afar. It is mechanical death at it’s worst: cold and calculated.

The men themselves are in horrible conditions. Many of them have gone insane due to a lack of sleep, drifting about the battlefield aimlessly before being shot by the French. We have lost all contact with Obernheer HQ, and I haven’t seen any supplies or ammunition be delivered for weeks. They promoted me to Field Marshall now, and expect me to just lead this entire front unsupplied and unsupported. We receive nothing, except new men. I get new men daily. Young boys, barely out of their mother’s womb, unprepared for the horrors of this war. Twenty of them arrived yesterday, and were sent as messengers to the entrenched scouts up ahead. Two days later, only four of them returned. This is madness. Germany is sending the youngest of her sons into the war to be butchered as pigs.

This is no war. There is no glory or victory to be found here. In Verdun, victory is to the one who loses the least.

Today, I found a red poppy buried in the frozen mud. I believe winter is coming.

Yours Truly,
Field Marshall Van Geyte of the Kaiserwehr

To Field Marshall Van Geyte of the Bundeswehr

Dear Laurence,

I have received all your letters. The world has changed radically over the past few years, ever since the dramatic end of that futile war. I have read the news here, and I understand Germany is in turmoil. Over here, they call it the Deutschkrieg, the German War.

I have received your report of the defeat of the Kaiser Party, and I have reason to assume all remaining members of your allegiance have either been executed by NSDAP henchmen or have fled to Austria. I believe you are the only one to remain in Germany as of now, and you could be in grave danger.

You might have been ill-informed of the happenings in Berlin while you were in hiding in Frankfurt: The Bundeswehr democrats have been routed out by the Spartacusbund, who is now in control of most of East-Germany. The area where you reside is currently under control by that vile dictator Hitler. While they are not as opposed to the Kaiser Party as the Spartakusbund was, feel free to assume that you are in grave danger.

With great sadness have I read the news about the untimely death of your wife and child. Martha was shocked to hear the news, her and Nadia were great friends. Those Communist dogs truly have no sence of morality. Where in das Kapital can one find an excuse for bombing civilian houses? I feel as if everyone in Germany has gone mad.

I have discussed the matter with Mosley, and we have reached the conclusion that right now our prime directive is to get you out of Germany. It is not safe for you there now. I know it would pain you to have to flee your mother country, but right now I see no other viable option. If you stay, you will be found and hunted down. England will be safe for you until the storm cools.

Mosley and I have arranged a flight from the airstrip four miles south of Frankfurt. It will be a military airplane that flies without a marking. Seven Ironsides will travel with it to defend the airstrip from any possible NSDAP attacks and escort you safely out of Germany. They are among the most battle-hardened and elite commandos we have, and fully loyal to Mosley, so they are to be trusted. Be there two hours before sunrise. Due to the risky nature of this operation the plane will only stay grounded for half an hour so be sure to be on time. Not that you have ever been late for something.

May you always carry fire in your heart

Regards,
Fleet Admiral De Nil of the Royal Navy
