I find it challenging to roleplay, not to play gamey. So if I played Krakow I would never annex Greece through some ally. Why would I? My mission would be to set Prussia, Austria and Russia up against each other and try to win as much of Poland as possible so I could form it. As such, setting roleplaying goals as a small or medium sized nation can be both fun and challenging. You could try to unite India and throw out the westerners without westernizing (why would you be like them? You are after all Indian, and Indian culture is always better!), or unite Germany with one of the smaller German states. Heck, release Norway and try to unite Scandinavia with them. Loads of histories to be played out, if you find them.

Winning the game, to me, is not about score but about forging history. And that can be quite hard. ;)

(Your Zulu game seems fun though - Kick the Europeans out and conquer Africa.)

Hirohito would be proud of your Japanese Empire.

A little OT

The Emperor Showa (Hirohito) was a Pacifist and wanted to be a marine biologist, he wasn't an imperialist and didn't want to be emperor, so he wouldn't be proud, but his generals might be:p

I never know quite what to make of these sort of threads...

When you reload repeatedly and say "now its not hard..." what exactly are you looking for? If its not hard it shouldn't require reload ever unless you make simple mistake like click on wrong nation to DoW(guilty myself late at nite when I should have quit playing) but otherwise reload means basically you were defeated.

Its like if you played chess with someone.... and you see you will be checkmated soon. Now you say best 2 out of 3, then best 3 out of 4 and so on but claim your opponent is not difficult to defeat. Well if the only objective is ability to win no matter the reloads then everything is easy. Or if you have some % of reloads that is "hard" say over 12 reloads but anything else is "easy" how is game designer supposed to work with that?

If you want a challenge try making some of your own rules. Don't use SoI for more than 1 war all game... or something else. Its quite easy to raise difficulty if you think about it for awhile.

The difference for me is something like an AI which constantly does some stupid pattern that has a major effect on the outcome. As if Mexico always agree to peace with Texas... then yeah, that makes it too easy with no reason. However V2 is complex enough with a few limits you can make very challenging game for many nations.

Just confirming what i said: British SoI country is gamey :)
My Krakow game though, Austria couldnt protect me, i had to keep BB below 25 so far... But soon i will return to europe to start new big war :)

If you don't want a game in a SOI (because it can be gamey) you could try Madagaskar (in none of my games they ended in anyones SOI). I haven't played them myself, so I don't know how they exatly start...

In all of my games where i dont conquer them myself (usually my first african target if i dont get suez) it seems to end up in the USA's SoI

muthaf: how did you manage to leave russian Soi? In all my krakow games russia add me to their Soi and so i cannot attack them. And only possible expansion for me is austria (from which i took rest of the west galicia).

@Muthaf: By saying you are bored and can´t find a challenge I assume you always finish number one. Right?

well, i never actually finished a game (reasons: lategame bugs & boredom)
As zulu for example i was actually 2nd, but beatan half a world at once easily whean broken SoI/GP status in 1880s. :)

I find it challenging to roleplay, not to play gamey. So if I played Krakow I would never annex Greece through some ally. Why would I?

(Your Zulu game seems fun though - Kick the Europeans out and conquer Africa.)

i never said its about score. but till the economy/sociology/diplomacy is fixed, there is not much else to do :) Yeah, making Zulu Afrika and then colonize world was might fun indeed.
Btw:
I NEVER use ally to fight my wars. As krakow i logically conquered port in north italy, then launched greece invasion...
Then captured Suez, then part of Java, and then 2 Chinese States... Now im about to return to Europe to liberate my Polish brethren from under the Austrian Yoke :D
...just need to get tha Gas Attack...

muthaf: how did you manage to leave russian Soi? In all my krakow games russia add me to their Soi and so i cannot attack them. And only possible expansion for me is austria (from which i took rest of the west galicia).

Well, right now im GP for about a decade :) its 1870 i think. I was in Austria SoI, then Russian got me too and there i remained till rising to GP status...
Only fool-proof way to leave SoI i know about is to get BB and contaiment wars... pretty risky if you already have possessions - they will want to take them pobably too - if 1 state country, then its actually almost gamey i think :)
Oh, and good job taking West Galicia from Austria, nice work. What was/is your Krakow game strategy?

@Ichon:

I am sorry, but your post seems kinda weird...
I dont know what are you trying to do exactly. I already stated about my re-loading policy, yet you still talk about me like im cheating?
I guess you just know me personally or have you be looking over my shoulder if you dare to accuse me in such a manner on public forum?
That's lame dude, and i think deep down you already know it...

Gotta say i agree with Ichon on this one. Why say its easy when you have rote learned the path to GP status. Pretty much any nation, or any game even is easy with this apporach.

Maybe a challenge for you would be to take a small nation and live with the mistakes you make and see how far you can get? If you can get a minor to GP status straight off on the first go, then yes, that nation is easy. But otherwise, this is a just a pointless thread.

Hawaii

The challenge is staying awake.
It was great pulling off a WC with Hawaii. I started off the proper way by reloading like a thousand times, you know, but that got boring, Dude, so I loaded as my enemies and got them fighting each other. But that still took too long so I used cheats, edited save files and modded events. Things were so coming together when I thought... as if! Get a life! So, bottom line, I created an instant win button which I turned into a really cool mini-game with a progress bar and all where the challenge was to click the button as close to the end as possible. Awesome!!! I don't know why Paradox never thought of that one before as it should be standard in all their games. Thnx a bunch PI for making such a totally challenging game (not).

Tripoli.

In the gold version (IIRC) I managed to wear the Ottomans down by luring them into the desert and getting them to suffer from attrition loss. However, the Paradox developers just *had* to make the AI smarter and not overstretch itself anymore, so it's been a very long time since I've been able to win as Tripoli against the Ottomans. Also, a lot of the time now France will try and annex Tripoli if it survives for too long (and two GPs vs. Tripoli is just too much!).

In my every game russia adds me to their soi around 1846

MuthaF: first i've built up my research base(clergy! up to 2%) and industry (cement and glass factory). Then i focused on army, teching to tier 4(machine guns etc.) maxed army spending, reactionaries in government(jingo!) and NF with soldiers. Around 1861(i cannot check exact date right now) I declared war on Austria :). It took 2 battles to get required warscore (21).

My army:
1cav,1huss,4guards,2art. this could battle any army Austria could throw on me :). One battle lasted 2 years and i was defending at Krakow and second one(another 2 years) on soon-be-mine Tarnow province;). For each soldier i lost they ware loosing 50-100 soldiers. Oh and Austria had bad habit of sending cannon fodder armies to help those engaged in combat. One could think that Krakowians are like persian Immortals or some other ubersoldats ;).

After that:
Now i've cheated a little bit, used ZinnMod to get LeaveSoi decision. So i can declare war on russia. I demanded Mazowieckie and Wielkopolskie (warscore 30) but it was pain in the ass to meet this . provinces count as 0.2 to warscore and Russia had virtually no army i could battle (and gain warscore) i had to go and find them near the Russia-China border. No to mention russian anracho liberals rebelling all across Russia and my conquered provinces. And territory i've conquered was ranging from sevastopol, thourgh chernigov moscow up to st petersburg. On word: frustrating.

Now i'm waiting fo 1.2 patch ;)

And sorry for bad english ;)

WTF???????

I dont get you people. I DONT RELOAD x-time to GET UNFAIR RESULTS !!!!
where the hell that stupid idea coming from?!
AS I STATED:
I use 'reload' cheat only when getting me stupid generals get me UP TO GREAT F**CKING POWER STATUS, becuase the damn ranking is BROKEN by design. no way any general/admiral should be worth 4 points.

I also use save/load when i go to sleep or do something else... If this is cheating, then there is something wrong...with YOU!

I really hope i dont have to deal with such bullshit anymore, its really tiring, insulting and repetetive...

ADD:
maybe you were actually talking that i had to restart Krakow campaign few times to workout some economic issus?
Its the same - i had a bug thread about that, which i was able to solve with kindly advice of King.
I still CAN NOT consider it as cheating, just cause it wasnt...

Im sorry, how did you manage to build industry in the begining?
AFAIK Krakow starts as democracy, with Catholic party in power & interventionalism or smtg that DOES NOT allow building industry?

It is true, you can try to promote capis, then try to direct them to build something, but if you actualy managed that in beggining, im very impressed :)
(capis tend to build Food can factories mostly, and you must be running massive debt from beggining).
I just borrowed 5 000€, manually bough reserves of food&guns for army, trained 2 regiments and general, paid back the rest of € and took over north italy :)
That get me going nicely ..Also first my game as democracy, and modern country...my main thought: Krakow has INSANE research points :))

btw. machine gun is 1870+ tech, i know cause i have been waiting last 10 years for it, researching secondary techs & conquering Java/China, till i start Austria invasion
