intruder alert- thanks for joining the thread :)
Actually, the only Polish territory I took as a *prize* was Cracow. The story told the truth, I had NO intentions of taking any prizes until the Polish proved to be very stubborn about white peace  Also, as for King Zog, he will continue to rule in Albania for now as I superseded one of the triggers... The reason Italy takes Albania (besides diplomatic tensions) is because Mussolini felt belittled by Hitler taking Czech lands. So Mussolini took Albania to show he too can seize lands. For my story, I have outdone Hitler and Zog will still rule... for now...
As for the subs, I had a serial of 9 type III subs( so my total is 12 now) which has been completed. I don't subscribe to the cheap tactic of sub-zerging enemy fleets. I will build a proper navy for engagements and use my NAVs to sink a few ships. For a proper challenge, I do my best to use navies to sink navies. I will certainly research and build some type IV subs as they do make excellent scouts and convoy raiders. Besides, Mussolini would be very disappointed to see a sub zerg built instead of fulfilling his desire for some nice pretty battleships. I will allow him those plus a nice carrier group... or four

The Balbinater- I too have been greatly concerned about my belligerence. UK is now at 37 belligerence required to DOW!! There are several reasons it is not higher...

1) taking Hungary, Austria, and Czech lands, the most painful belligerence hit is the DOW itself. My event had Austria DOWing me to save a few points. Also, Poland DOW'd me rather than the other way around.

2) No Albania annexation/DOW.

3) Final reason is hidden in this picture here. Any good Italian player should catch it...

Nice on not annexing Ethiopia, saves you the belligerence and it keeps your industry in a permanent state of war. You don't need to annex it until the war starts, and even then you can conquer the extra British territories surrounding it.

Mico94 + Carlito Gambino - I guess the hint wasn't that well hidden.

I HAD truly intended on annexing them but as my story developed, my belligerence went higher and higher. Due to random slider events, at one point the UK had a 41 bell. to DOW and remember, I have democracies can DOW turned on...

Until my assault on Czech and Polish lands, I had a nice sized army based in Ethopia because I fully expected an early DOW from the UK... Very lucky they have not yet!! Carlito did hit the nail on the head, not annexing gives me a perpetual state of war and unlike Germany, my belligerence can and does drop during war... as long as I am not fighting. At this point, let us say my Ethopian claims are not satisfied because I am using their lands as a training grounds for new battle tactics  They will be annexed as soon as WWII formally breaks out. It is very likely the Soviet army will DOW on the Axis if I am in it... Ah well, my empire shall be the backbone of the Axis if I can get to building my troops!!

P.S. Please remember, I MUST devote 10 ICs to consumer goods over and above what I need to keep dissent rising AND I MUST keep one factory for Hungary and Austria in my build queue at all times. Keep these in mind when you debate why I kept the war economy rolling...

Grey clouds on the horizon

Benito's stateroom, early morning:

Italy having endured its recent expansion, rests a while. Benito looks out his window and watches the simple folk wander the early morning streets of Rome, blissfully unaware of how close their leaders came to causing untold harm upon them. Luckily, the world was unprepared for the Fascist storm that swept across Europe. Il Duce is positive it will be prepared for the next...

To ensure no such instability occurs in the future, Benito devotes an additional hour every morning to reviewing the previous day's reports. There will be nothing he is not aware of that takes place in Italy that he is not aware of, assuming it has been reported.

The rest of the year:

Benito is glad the rest of '39 goes by without any major crises but as he looks back, he realizes that Europe is facing the calm before a storm. Asia is embroiled in a war that has all the world's major powers intervening, except for Italy. It is good that they are distracted, for much has been done this year...

In Asia, Japan and the Soviets tangle...

2j1alhs.png

In August, Hitler makes a unexpected move that causes a stir with the other great powers...

zx2kas.png

It cannot be believed that Hitler would make such an unholy deal. Il Duce sends his best diplomatic team to ensure Italy will not be his next target.

In August, the British push their way into East Europe by guaranteeing Poland's independence. Typically, this matter is not handled in such grandiose fashion but, in September it becomes apparent there was a motive hidden within their guarantee...

548v46.png

Il Duce refuses to pushed into another war so soon. Some of the troops are still using World War I weaponry and Italy is not very well defended. True, the last few months have seen some research completed and the borders have been guarded but not nearly as well as his advisers or he would wish. It will take more time to prepare his country for another war... we must buy that time...

Poland does not last long before the industrial and military might of Germany, a fate that Italy could still easily suffer should Hitler wish it. The worrisome issue is the dark deal made with the Bolsheviks...

jp9dmv.png

With the eyes of the world upon him, Hitler does not settle only for Poland...

1z49ysy.png

Benito breathes a sigh of relief. His ambassadors assured him that Hitler was not looking south but, they were known to be wrong before. All of northern Europe was now involved in a war, how long until it spread to the south? Il Duce must be prepared! Orders are sent to the Chief of Staff and Armaments, all troops using WWI equipment must be immediately outfitted with newer weaponry. We could use some of the new tanks that has been developed yet, we lack the ability to produce it at this time. Plans must be set aside for them to be produced at the earliest opportunity. Attempts are made to purchase units from Germany but they refuse to sell any assets at this time.

News from the eastern front, the Soviets have marched to war with their tiny neighbor, Finland...

ano9s4.png

Once again, another staff meeting is held to prepare for the spread of war to the south. Once again the consensus is held that Italy is not ready. We must be made to be ready! The Finns and Soviets make peace in February of '40 with the Soviets gaining some lands from them.

Hitler makes his move in the north, reaching beyond the North Sea...

vfjkhc.png

It takes less than two weeks for Hitler's army to annex Denmark. Italy could be next, what good news does his staff have for him? The army is no longer using WWI equipment but they are still awaiting production of the new rifles researched in '39. New reports from research and development are awaiting Il Duce one early March morning.

ixb5ae.png

Italy has seen many technological gains recently but has had little ability to utilize them. A conference must be held to see how we can use these new technologies quicker. It is vital for Italy's survival!

Benito's stateroom, April, before sunrise:

qy8e39.jpg

Benito, your dream has begun to take shape. Rome looks stronger than she has in many centuries. Yet, she is still very fragile. You must not shoulder the entire burden of your empire yourself. Pick trusted advisers and assign them duties you did not trust with others. You will not be betrayed. Due to your inspiration, your staff shares your dream and in the coming months, you must be stronger than ever before. Ally with those who share your goal of removing the western powers from Europe. Be wary of their final motives but, for now, you need their protection. Learn from them and be prepared for the future. Do not back down from your goals and remember, the people must be shown the glorious way of Fascism. If you display your confidence and your sword to the world, they too will share your dream... eventually...

you surely are lucky for that...there is no way you could hold all this territory, we seem spread way too thin!

I too am surprised, typically, the UK declares an early war on Italy with such belligerence. I guess maybe they are worried that Germany may intervene? Still, Europe is almost at full war and yet, they ignore me :) BTW- I am finally able to defend myself from minor attacks but I wish I could make upgrades happen a little faster. Troop production has begun but, not on a large scale... My self-imposed restrictions with the ICs for Austria and Hungary hurt me.

Side Notes: I have never taken Czechoslovakia as Italy before this AAR and did not realize the guarantee of Poland ( ENG event) was triggered by German and the Czech land events. Not realizing this till after the fact, I did manually have to trigger both the guarantee ( very early Sept.) and Danzig or War( late Sept.). It was either that or reload so they went better, I chose the former so I can avoid any reloads. Now that WWII has officially started, I will not allow any reloads whatsoever( I have done none so far) and no more manually triggered events.

Also, I want to say my IC restrictions from Hungary and Austria have been VERY painful. I see those extra ICs in consumer goods and constantly have to check my impulse to use them to do something more efficient!! For the sake of challenging gameplay and roleplay, I have yet to change my orders  . Damn if it isn't tempting though! P.S. The extra cash generated has been useful for diplomacy and spying.

Ah, the world is at war, and somehow they ignore you. I've had a lot less belligerence than you and got myself DoW'd so you're really lucky. Are you gonna aid Germany once the time comes, or are you gonna follow your own path?

is right. very very lucky to stay out of it so far.

Italo Balbo <--- appoints himself an honorary advisor and kicks in the teeth all dissenters

what's the status of our navy? we MIGHT be able to handle ourselves on a surprise attack given how spread thin we are if we have a decent navy and what they call in the army a "quick reaction force"...being that we are the masters of the med, we can move a relief force practically anywhere as long as we keep a strong navy.

The Balbinater- If I directly answer this question now, you will not enjoy my future updates. All I can say atm is I DO have a navy.

Carlito Gambino- I cannot answer this one yet as my updates will handle the answer. and yes... I am shocked no one, including SOV has DOW'd me yet!

Thunderstorm!

Benito awakens following this visitation from his mystical guide. Was his visit a good omen or bad? He did mention needing to be stronger than ever before... A staff meeting must be called immediately!

Following the staff meeting and doing some circumspection, Buffarini-Guidi has been appointed as the leader of the west Italian empire. This area includes Spain and Morocco, with more to be added as necessary. Allowing someone else to run this area takes much work off of his shoulders... B-G, known as a Man of the People, has proven to be interested in all facets of his staff's work so now, he can deal with his own staff. To replace him, we shall get an extremely efficient staff member, Umberto Albini. He has ways of extracting more from those foreign workers even if he is a bit harsh with his methods.

Now to review more reports for this month of April...Our industry still lacks the ability to fully upgrade our troops, some new CLs were ordered to replace our aging ships, and a few new MTNs were ordered to round out our commando forces.

May begins like the previous months until the morning a messenger comes running into his bedroom just after midnight...

70du09.png

As expected, the war has finally moved to West Europe. An immediate staff meeting is discussed the review our role in this brewing war. After much deliberation, following several days wait to ensure nothing was overlooked, a decision is made...

167a0lc.png

His army not quite ready but realizing if he should not ally now, his country could very well be the next target, Italy enters the war. Now Germany will have to make good on the promises of the Tri-Partite Pact signed last year. The fact that the Pact inferred three names, Japan was excluded in the final draft, was not lost on him. Mussolini considers this war-like Hitler a beast but, for now he will join forces with his.

The morning of May 11, sees much news...

rrmsna.png

The Germans make good on the Pact, the USA tries to threaten us, and Japan continues to struggle in Asia. This causes an uprising of their military staff. Luckily for Benito, his staff has backed most of his concerns and ideas completely.

The western Med is sealed off by B-G and his forces. His appointment is validated by the quick action taken on such a vital point. If only Suez could be taken so easily!

jpzxa8.png

As soon as Gibraltar is secured and all beachheads protected, the remaining Spanish forces are shifted to Tripoli. Already. the British are pushing into Italian held assets there.

The Soviets do not remain quiet during this time. Estonia decides to ignore Soviet demands and war breaks out in the Baltic states. Lithuania, Estonia, and Latvia have to deal with the Russian bear alone. Their bravery is undeniable but, their resistance is viewed as futile against the Soviets. Fascism had begun to take hold in the area, maybe in the future it can be revived. Both Germany and the Soviets make rapid advances...

2z7oh9x.png

While in the south of France, Italian troops easily swarm into southern France taking Grenoble, Nice, Marseilles and further west Bordeaux and Toulouse. The Belgians and Dutch capitulate, the French colonies in the Med are freed, then Germany decides to keep a puppet government in parts of France. A decision Mussolini is most unhappy with...

2v3lgzp.png

16krtb4.png

Benito will have to seek recompense for this slight at a later time. For now, the puppet Vichy can live at the mercy of the Italians. Further east, the Soviets pick on another small neighbor. They too decide to fight !!

34y41mp.png

A letter is sent to all of the officers and staff, that they could learn something from the brave soldiers to the east. A certain officer returns with a great insult to Il Duce. This will not be tolerated. A quiet, quick solution is devised so that no other officers will ever again dare such a false bravado against the will of the New Empire. One person's dissent can escalate easily...

28tg70x.png

His staff says nothing to Il Duce about the occurrence but, a great military funeral is held in his honor. He served the old Italy well and gloriously but, this is the New Italian Empire. Romania gives in the Soviet demands at gunpoint, in Africa, advance landings are made in front of the British, slowing down their advance, and Germany sends us new blueprints to advance our technical knowledge.

ix4nba.png

Most importantly, Suez is captured from the British! The Med is ours!

1231fyr.png

Much has occurred in a short time. War has a way of making weeks seem like months. Il Duce sends the entire army to Africa to deal with the British. They could easily retake our gains and reopen the Med. To allow this, would be the death of the navy and it would threaten the Italian peninsula, a situation best avoided. A staff meeting is called with the military to discuss the next few months planning.

il duce is a FOOL. only Italo Balbo is fit to lead!

oh well, i will give advice from the grave then!

nice job securing alexandria and suez so quick. that will ensure a lightning quick blitz of the med. refound the roman empire. take out the balkan states while you're at it. since we are at war with the the allies might as well grab up as much ground as possible.

No one dares call Il Duce a FOOL :p

I would love to follow that plan but things are preventing me :/ I will grab what I can, this I PROMISE you!

Carlito Gambino - The foolish UK AI ran the defenders off of Suez right after I made my advance landing. I quickly picked up an extra from El Alamein and dropped it on Suez. An amazing stroke of luck for Mussolini and a truly retarded move by the AI. I almost felt bad doing it :p

Time for an update I think ! Thanks again for reading.

Sealing off the Mediterranean with such ease fills Mussolini with glee. The Brits and French truly underestimated Italy. He knew they would not do the same mistake again. Now it was time to clear a bit of Africa from the Brits to further secure his hold on the entry points to the Med.

The British commanders must have felt very foolish and now fought with devlish tenacity to the land they still held bordering the Med. Italy was forced to send all of her available troops in an effort to contain the growing number of British troops. With much effort, they were slowly being contained...

2je1z41.png

Il Duce knew that once again, his troops were facing superior weapons and the only reasons for possible victory were an element of luck and the element of numbers. Despite many attempts to update his troops, the industry just cannot produce enough weaponry at a quick enough pace. For now, the slow but steady updating must be satisfactory. Il Duce prayed this would not be the reason for failure in the future.

The war drags on in Africa far longer than Il Duce had hoped and once again, the Asian war hits home with news from the west...

2s9rlu8.png

America was growing restless in the west but as of yet, decided to stay clear of the war. In fact, some minor trade deals have been struck with them, despite their constant attempts to infiltrate our ranks with spies. The power of the lire seems to keep them at bay.

In Africa, the British continue to cause problems for Italy. Which in turn, causes great pain to Il Duce. How can Italy be a global empire if we cannot handle this small skirmish so close to home? Something must be done now! A conference is called with the top generals to discuss a solution to the continuing British problem and the future of Italy. The meeting proves a waste of time but one general, Graziani promises results if given command of the battle. He is given of the three of the most advanced infantry divisions and command of the African troops. Let us hope he can prove himself...

2je1z41.jpg

The situation is improving with Graziani in command but results are still very slow. In December, a vital telegram reaches Benito. The British have forced a landing at Seville! They are pouring forces into the beachhead and are preparing for an advance.

33u7eph.png

With his troops tied up in Africa, he cannot afford another front. A message is dispatched to Germany to reinforce the area with troops from France. Germany respond swiftly with 10 divisions including one armored division. Also, the entire Spanish peninsula defenses are ordered to send at least one battalion to contain this intrusion. Meanwhile, Graziani reports the British are fully contained and almost to the point of surrender.

1zf4oqa.png

2d1agm.png

Hitler's general were unhappy to see Italy allowing this intrusion but at the same time, happy to be given the chance to see some action. They promised their reports would not say anything bad about the state of Italian defenses and they offered some tips on how to improve them. Immediate changes were made adding 1 basic artillery brigade to coastal defense militia.

With Africa contained and Spain secured, a demand is sent to Zog in Albania. Join the Italian empire willingly or suffer the consequences. Of course Zog refuses. This decision makes Benito happy. Albania will be used as a staging area for his next target...

2agvu3c.png

In order to plan for the next fight, troops are spared from the African offensive. Graziani grumbles about his ability to continue the offensive after such a command but, Benito promises him the opportunity to redeem himself another time. For now, he has done very well...
